Elizabeth Warren Is Out. I’m Not Ready to Make Nice

In the wake of that debate, memes with a picture of Warren that declared, “She’s electable if you fucking vote for her,” spread across the internet

But study after study confirms that more than any one fatal flaw, the mere fact of being a woman is the greatest barrier to success as a woman.

We’ve never seen a woman win the presidency, so we don’t believe a woman can. We have never seen a woman win because we’ve never let her. And we won’t let her win, because we don’t think she can.

At an event for undecided voters in January, I listened to a woman tell me that she was undecided because she liked Warren and Klobuchar, but she didn’t believe women had a chance. “Right now I have to decide if it’s going to be harder to see a woman lose the nomination or lose in the general election,” she said. She ended up caucusing for Pete Buttigieg.

So not this time. It’s just not our turn—again.

In September 2019, I co-moderated a forum on LGBTQ issues and asked Joe Biden about his record on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. “Well, aren’t you nice?” Biden said in response. Later, as we walked off the stage, he said, “Aren’t you a sweetheart?”

After Warren’s Super Tuesday defeat, a man left me a voicemail. He remembered what had happened at the forum. He wanted me to know he wasn’t sexist. “I just want to win,” he said. “You should want that too. So stop attacking Biden and get in line.”

I know what happened on the boat. And I do want to win. But I’m tired of a logic that asks me to take a backseat while a man leads. I’m tired of people who tell me to show up and do work for candidates who were never going to listen, who are willing to sell me out in order to compromise.

I’ll show up to the polls. As usual, men can count on women’s sucking it up and making the best of it, expecting sweethearts like me to get in line. We do and we will, because we don’t have better choices. Black women, in particular, do this in presidential race after presidential race, heading to the polls, voting in an era of disenfranchisement, only to see their issues and their candidacies erased. Only to see a disturbing number of white women vote for Trump.

We are still waiting.

In a statement to her supporters, Warren said, “Choose to fight only righteous fights, because then when things get tough—and they will—you will know that there is only one option ahead of you: Nevertheless, you must persist.” But that isn’t always pretty.

With what I hope is pride, Warren added, “In this campaign, we have been willing to fight, and when necessary, we left plenty of blood and teeth on the floor.” So I’m going to listen to “Gaslighter” a few more times and drink. There is already a trail of blood and teeth on the floor behind me.

In 2006, after the Dixie Chicks backlash, the group released the Grammy-winning album Taking the Long Way. The hit single from that album, “Not Ready to Make Nice,” is a direct response to the “scandal,” a refusal to apologize. “I’m not ready to make nice,” the women sing. “I’m not ready to back down.”

The final line goes: “They say time heals everything, but I’m still waiting.”

Until the new record comes out in May, Taking the Long Way is their most recent album. The group had reportedly planned on a collection of covers to fulfill their seven-album contract, but after her divorce, lead singer Maines said she had more on her mind. She wasn’t done. She wasn’t ready to be quiet. Not yet.

The Royals Are Ready for Christmas—See the Stunning Decorations at Windsor Castle

As Queen Elizabeth gets ready for the holiday season, the first photos of her breathtaking Christmas trees have been released—and, as expected, they’re just as spectacular as ever.

The Windsor Castle staff has been busy decorating. As per royal tradition, a 15-foot tree has been placed in front of the windows in the Crimson Drawing Room as well as a 20-foot version in St. George’s Hall. (This is the same place where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle first introduced baby Archie to the world.)

The Nordmann fir trees from Windsor Great Park have been decorated with red, gold, and mirrored ornaments, as well as with ribbons, hundreds of twinkling lights, miniature crowns, and an angel topper.

In the photos, staff can be seen climbing ladders to decorate the higher branches of the enormous Christmas trees, before the Queen and members of her family add the final touches.

Meanwhile, other members of the staff can also be seen adding decorations to the State Dinning Room, which has been laid with “silver-gilt pieces from the Grand Service” used by past royals, and are “still used today by the Queen and her guests at state banquets,” according to The Royal Collection Staff.

This year, the Queen will celebrate the holidays without the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who are reported to be spending the holidays with their baby and Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland.

The royal couple announced their plans in a statement on November 13.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time toward the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’s mother Doria,” a spokesperson said. “This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the royal family, and has the support of her Majesty the Queen.”

Little Archie will just have to wait until next year to see his great-grandmother’s magical holidays decorations.

For Angelica Ross, Getting Ready Is About Power, Confidence, and Womanhood

It’s been a month for Angelica Ross, and it’s not even over. A non-exhaustive list of things the actor, entrepreneur, and transgender rights activist has done so far in September: star as Nurse Rita in FX’s American Horror Story: 1984, host the 2020 Presidential Candidate Forum on LGBTQ Issues, deal with online harassment from a group of angry Bernie bros, and attend the Emmys for her breakout role as Candy on Pose. (The show was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.)

Despite all this, Ross says she wasn’t stressed at all leading up to the award show on Sunday, September 22. “I’m very fortunate to have an amazing team, so I could focus on filming American Horror Story 1984 and hosting the LGBTQ Presidential Forum,” she says. Also: “Regardless of the Emmys outcome [for Pose], I knew we were already walking in as winners, because we have truly changed the culture.”

Here, Ross—in her own words—takes us through her getting-ready process for the Emmys. “I cannot lie,” she tells Glamour. “I love a red carpet, a purple carpet, a glitter carpet. However you color the runway, I aim to slay.”

“My look was created by hairstylist César DeLeön Ramirêz, makeup artist Yolonda Frederick, and stylist Brandon M. Garr. I was incredibly excited to wear a custom creation from Michael Costello.”

“When we first started talking Emmys, there was only one name that immediately came to mind: Michael Costello. He supported my career even before I blew up on the scene. He’s dressed me for several red carpets, including the major milestone of accepting the GLAAD Media Award for my interview with Trevor Noah. I just knew that Michael would create a show-stopping moment.”

“I’m wearing Martin Katz diamond earrings. The diamonds were truly spectacular. The Brilliant Bezel earrings are set in Platinum, accented with two round diamonds and set with 110 diamonds. They’re valued at $87,500.”

Kaitlyn Dever Is Ready for Her Moment in the Sun

When Kaitlyn Dever strolled into the Manhattan restaurant on an overcast September afternoon, she looked like the physical manifestation of sunshine. Literally: The 22-year-old actor was dressed in head-to-toe marigold, a look she credited her stylist, Karla Welch. Turns out the outfit is part of a recent style renaissance that included a closet clean out ending in eight bags of clothes.

“I was realizing how many style phases I’ve gone through, and some of them are…interesting,” says Dever, ticking them off on her fingers. “Crocheted tops—I was doing a lot of ‘boho’ shopping. The floppy hats look, I wore that one a lot.” There was even a brief flirtation with going goth that coincided with a crush on Chris Angel.

Were you into magic? I wondered. “No, I like tattoos,” Dever deadpans, arching an eyebrow. “I know, very edgy. I was 14; it was a formative year. Kind of gives you a glimpse into my taste.” She’s since moved on from Chris Angel—these days, she says she’s dying to work with Jeff Goldblum—but the search for a signature style continues. “I feel like I’m constantly becoming other people, and then I’m dressing like the character I play,” she says. “That’s why I feel so scatterbrained in my style.”

When it comes to her career, however, Dever knows exactly what she wants: She’s been acting since she was nine—early roles include “Adorable Girl” in the Make It or Break It series and a part in An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong. Nearly a decade of recurring roles on series like Justified and Last Man Standing followed. This year, Dever officially went from rising star to supernova with a breakout role in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart alongside Beanie Feldstein. The movie, about two BFFs who strive to have one wild night before high school ends, was called “one of the best teen comedies to come along in years” by The A.V. Club and has an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Dever and Feldstein’s Amy and Molly have become the heirs apparent to Lucy and Ethel or, more recent, Abbi and Ilana—in other words, a comedy duo that proves once and for all the buddy genre isn’t just for the boys.

Now, people are buzzing about Dever’s performance in Unbelievable. The Netflix series is based on a jaw-dropping, real-life ProPublica investigation and has become a tentpole of the fall TV lineup. In it, Dever plays Marie, a teenager who is raped at knifepoint, reports the incident to police, and then recants her story after detectives pressure her into confessing that she made it all up for attention.

Kimberly Teehee Is Ready to Be the First Cherokee Nation Delegate to Congress

Cherokee Nation is looking to make good on an over 200-year-old promise from the United States government. In the 18th and 19th centuries there were treaties signed between the two parties promising Cherokee Nation a seat at the table—with its own delegate in the House of Representatives. Earlier this month, Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. made clear the time is now for his people to have a seat at the table.

Chief Hoskin nominated Kimberly Teehee, 53, the tribe’s vice president of government relations and former senior policy adviser for Native American affairs in the Obama administration to be the non-voting delegate. Cherokee Nation has voted to confirm Teehee, and she has received support from Native Americans in office like Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-NM).

“The government must always uphold its treaty obligations, and the United States government promised the Cherokee Nation’s right to a delegate when it entered into the Treaty of New Echota. Rights granted through treaties do not expire. Chief Hoskin has taken an important first step in this process by naming a delegate—Kimberly Teehee is well known in Indian Country and I look forward to learning more about the process as we move forward,” Rep. Haaland tells Glamour.

While there are already several non-voting delegates in the House of Representatives—from Puerto Rico, to the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—this appointment would be especially historic as Teehee would be the first delegate from a sovereign Native American government.

As she prepares to stake her claim in Congress, Glamour spoke to Teehee about her work with President Obama, what she learned from Gloria Steinem, and how she hopes to be a role model.

Glamour: You were just confirmed by Cherokee Nation to hopefully be their first delegate to Congress. Congratulations! What was the nomination, and subsequent confirmation process like?

Kimberly Teehee: When Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. was sworn in this August, one of the very first things he wanted to do was exercise our treaty rights that provide for a Cherokee delegate in the House of Representatives. And he nominated me to be that delegate. When I went before council to be confirmed, it was truly historic. I just feel very blessed, humbled, and honored that our elected leaders of the tribe have unanimously approved my role as delegate to the House of Representatives. But we also know we have our work cut out for us. That’s just our part of the treaty rights. We still need to work with our delegation and leadership in the House of Representatives on the framework of how this is going to work within the Congress.

Why do you and Chief Hoskin feel that now—with this administration and this President in the White House—is the right time to renew your push to have a Cherokee Nation delegate to Congress? And how are you gearing up to fight to get this through Congress?

KT: I don’t look at it as “why now” as much as I look at it as, “why not now?” We are a sovereign nation that is capable of exercising a sovereign right to move forward with appointing a delegate to honor our treaties. We’ve had great success as Cherokee Nation working with Congress and working with this administration. Whether it was trying to get legislation supported, or trying get in the President’s budget—we were successful at doing those things. So again it’s not why now, but why not now that Indian country has stronger footing, more champions in Congress than ever before, and that we’ve had success working on both sides of the aisle. It just seems the right time to do it.

Get Ready: Lifetime Is Making a Movie About the College Admissions Scandal

The college admissions scandal is tailor-made for television, and Lifetime is stepping in to bring it to life.

Yes, you read that correctly: Lifetime is making a movie about the real-life college admissions scandal, involving actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, that rocked the country earlier this year. If you’ll recall, a group of wealthy parents, including Huffman and Loughlin, were charged with fraud for essentially buying their children’s way into college. Lifetime obviously recognizes that this is just the kind of plot its viewers are obsessed with. On Tuesday, July 23, the network announced it’s green-lit a two-hour movie about the story with a very specific working title: College Admissions Scandal. It’s already iconic.

According to the synopsis, the film will “follow two wealthy mothers who share an obsession with getting their teenagers into the best possible college. When charismatic college admissions consultant Rick Singer offers a side door into the prestigious institutions of their dreams, they willingly partake with visions of coveted acceptance letters in their heads. But when Singer cooperates with the FBI and pleads guilty, the mothers who risked everything for their kids must face the consequences of their crimes and the loss of trust and respect from their families.”

The actual college admissions scandal is still in flux. In April, Huffman apologized to the public and then pled guilty to federal charges. Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, went with a not guilty plea and are currently awaiting trial. Their oldest daughter, Olivia Jade, has since dropped out of the University of Southern California and has lost brand partnerships with companies like Sephora and HP.
