Amy Poehler's ‘Making It’ Overalls Are the Only Pure Thing Left in the World

There’s a good chance that, like me, you’ve spent the last couple weeks (months? years?) searching high and low for soothing content as a respite from an alarming news cycle. Cat videos, frenzied online shopping sprees, meditation apps…all well and good, but in my eyes, nothing beats Amy Poehler’s overalls on Making It as pure medicine for my tired soul.

Hosted by Poehler and Nick Offerman, the NBC show is, by far, the feel-good show of the year. It’s a crafting competition full of adorable pun-offs, sweet bits, and the kind of gentle encouragement most of us can only dream of ever receiving in a work environment—think The Great British Baking Show but with woodworking instead of Victoria sponge cakes. It’s an absolute delight. In every episode Poehler appears in a pair of sturdy overalls, her version of a host uniform. And at this point, spotting her signature outfit is as comforting to me as catching a whiff of my favorite calming candle. As soon as I lay eyes on those strapping dungarees, I know that I’ve made it to the good place.

These overalls are a quiet constant in an increasingly inconsistent and discordant world—and every week Poehler delivers. They bring peace and harmony to my aching psyche and deserve to be celebrated as such. Having spent the majority of the mid-eighties and early nineties frolicking in overalls of the OshKosh B’Gosh variety, seeing Poehler in her own grown-up version of the ultimate play clothes tugs at my heartstrings in a way I never anticipated. These aren’t high-end silk “fashion” rompers we’re talking about; they’re utilitarian, comfy, and simple, just like the overalls my sister and I lived in during our blissed-out, sweet childhood.

Poehler’s overalls set the down-to-earth tone that underlies the entire series. Her casual, easy-going attire helps the contestants feel at ease and lets their handicrafts shine. As the host of a TV show on a major network—and a legitimate celebrity—Poehler easily could have made every episode a dramatic fashion moment designed to make her look her glamorous best. But nope! She went the overalls route, and whether they’re maroon, blue denim, olive green, or black, they’re always practical, comfortable, and low-key (and almost always are paired with an equally chill button-down).

Much like exercising, listening to true-crime podcasts, and petting my dog, Poehler’s overalls are the balm for which my soul has been yearning. (And if you’re not caught up, wait until you see her formal overalls from the season finale.) Have you ever heard of anything so pure and good? And as if that weren’t enough, they’re also the best fall outfit inspiration for the cozy weeks and months ahead. While her overalls are of the hearty, utilitarian variety, there’s a whole host of styles available these days, for any type of shopper.

This Bride Is Allegedly Making Her Guests Give a $75 Gift to Get Into Her Wedding

If you’ve ever been a bride or attended a wedding, you know to expect some guidelines—no matter how loose or simple—that make sure things run at least kind of smoothly. The vast majority of these guidelines are very reasonable (don’t wear jeans, don’t wear white, no need for a gift, etc.), but occasionally they raise an eyebrow for some people. Take, for instance, the alleged expectations of one bride that are sparking discussion right now.

As Cosmo reported, Reddit user u/laika_cat uploaded a screenshot of an email supposedly sent to guests of a wedding. The email is allegedly from a “wedding coordinator,” but the ridiculous demands, not to mention the numerous spelling/grammar errors, call that into question. The deceptively short list of rules includes a $75+ gift for admission, a mandatory hashtag, and no talking to the bride. Read the full list, below. (Again, keep in mind the obvious spelling errors make the validity of the demands suspicious.)

“Rules and regulations:

  1. Please arrive 15-30 minutes early.

  2. Please DO NOT wear white, cream or ivory.

  3. Please do not wear anything other than a basic bob or ponytail.

  4. Please do not fave a full face of makeup.

  5. Do not record during the seramony.

  6. Do not check in on FB until instructed.

  7. Use #[REDACTED] when posting all pictures.

  8. DO NOT TALK TO THE BRIDE AT ALL.

  9. Everyone will toast with Rémy. No acceptance.

  10. Lastly must come with gift 75$ or more or you want be admited in.”

The email ends with the writer asking guests to call them if they “have any questions or need clarification.”

This isn’t the only bride who has unwittingly gone viral for charging an admission fee for her wedding. A month ago, one couple reportedly had to call off a wedding days before the scheduled date, all because not enough people were willing to send them the $1,500 attendance fee.

Jennifer Lopez and A-Rod Are Making Coordinated Athleisure a Thing

Since the very beginning of their whirlwind romance, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have done a very impressive job of coordinating their outfits when they step out in public. This includes their first public appearance: a lunch date to New York City’s Marea restaurant, where they were spotted in matching camel-colored looks from head-to-toe.

It’s all been uphill from there: They’ve matched while yachting in Italy, while attending the MTV Video Music Awards, and during plenty of other moments. Couples who match together, stay together—or something like that (it’s cute, though).

Over the past few days, the two have treated us to a few more highly coordinated looks—and this time, it’s been all about those athleisure vibes. On Sunday, the couple stepped out in Beverly Hills for a bit of casual shopping at Tom Ford. Lopez went for a cropped gray Champion sweatshirt, which she paired with light pink printed leggings from the new Niyama Sol Vanguard collection and a white Hermès Birkin bag, finishing the look off with white sneakers, hoop earrings, and oversized sunglasses.

Rodriguez complemented the singer’s outfit with some summery trousers and a navy polo t-shirt—plus coorinating white sneakers and his own large sunnies.

It’s a shakeup from another athleisure coordination mission: On August 30, the couple wore similar looks for some house-shopping, this time in all pink for J.Lo—and more blue and white from Rodriguez.

And on August 28, Lopez stepped out for dinner with A-Rod in a navy blue tracksuit and white sneakers, which he matched with his own blue top and white kicks. We sense a pattern here.

It’s not exactly matchy-matchy, which is why their outfit coordination seems to be working. This is no 2001 Britney-Justin denim-on-denim situation, despite how hard the ’00s are trying right now.

And hey, we can’t blame them: Athleisure is kind of the best if you’re running around with errands to do—even when said errands are mansion shopping and dropping in at Tom Ford.

Makeup for Melanin Girls Isn't Just Making Products for Women of Color. It's Listening to Them.

While Instagram accounts for makeup are endless, it still often feels like a rare find to stumble across a platform for women of color that isn’t a personal blogger or influencer. Which is why Makeup for Melanin Girls (or MFMG) has become a destination for more than 171,000 women looking to discuss everything from the best nude lipsticks for dark skin tones to colorism in the beauty industry. The passion project began for founder Tomi Gbeleyi in 2016 when she was in college, and has since grown from a hashtag to multiple social media platforms to an indie beauty line that now sells eyeshadows and lipsticks.

Gbeleyi used to model on the side, but says she would always do her own makeup before going to set. “What would happen to me a lot of the time is that I would just be ‘casket ready’ at shoots because they didn’t know how to match my face,” Gbeleyi, now 27, tells Glamour. As frustrating as it can be to have your makeup done by a professional artist who didn’t come prepared with your foundation shade (something nearly every black girl—model or not—has likely encountered at some point), Gbeleyi refused to let it stand in her way. “At that time, my strategy was to figure out how to do my own makeup, so if the makeup artist [messed it up], I could go change it later.” She started seeking out tutorials for women of color on YouTube and it quickly became her favorite pastime.

What she soon came to realize is that there was a vast network of black women sharing tips and hacks online, but the problem was that the conversations were often focused on individual bloggers’ comment sections or discussed in hard-to discover web forums. What the community lacked was one mainstream platform for women with deep skin to come together to talk about favorite foundation brands and brow shaping hacks that suited their needs. On top of that, at the time, it was still rare for brands to showcase bloggers of color using their products.

So she decided to take matters in her own hand, and Makeup for Melanin Girls was born—first as a blog and Instagram, then with accounts on Twitter and Facebook so women of color could unite. With the creation of MFMG, Gbeleyi quickly saw how much a platform like this was needed and how many women related to her frustration. “I was trying to fulfill a need in my own life,” says Gbeleyi, who currently lives in Toronto. “I didn’t realize just how many people it would resonate with. I started sharing a few pictures. And before I knew it, there were 20,000 women following the page.”

After two years of manning the accounts as a hobby—and working at a tech company where she was the only black team member—she decided to take a leap of faith and work on MFMG full-time. Given the success of the account and the fact that she knew exactly what women of color wanted in a makeup line, she took the brand even further and launched the MFMG Glitter Makeup Palette. Every aspect of it was based entirely on feedback from her channels.

It’s that deep dedication that’s earned so much loyalty from her followers. “Makeup For Melanin Girls helped create a space in the industry to celebrate women of color like myself who are often overlooked,” says Gbemi Abiola, a 23-year-old fan from Buffalo, New York. “Because of [the account], I’m more comfortable in my own skin and love myself even more. Melanin is a beautiful thing and it needs to be embraced; not excluded.”

“MFMG understands their customers,” adds Simone Henry-Utecht, 44, who ordered the Glitter Palette because she wanted to feel good before going in for a stem-cell transplant. When she was notified the shipment was running late, she reached out and heard back directly from Gbeleyi. She was blown away by the gesture. “They know that we come in many shades and undertones, but still want to have fun with our looks without looking clownish or dead, which can happen when companies don’t understand how the colors of our skin work,” she says. “That’s why their Glitter Palette is always sold out. It’s the bomb! But for me, one of the most important things about MFMG is Tomi and her customer service, which is something that can be lost in this day and age.”

After a doing a recent survey of roughly 5,500 women Gbeleyi found that 80 percent said—shocker—they’re still having a difficult time finding the right foundation shade. “I knew there was a problem, obviously,” she says. “A lot of our conversations on Makeup for Melanin Girls are about a lack of products. But if you think about how many brands are out there, if 80 percent out of over 5,000 are still saying, ‘I cannot find a foundation for me,’ that’s a huge problem.”

Gbeleyi and her team are currently working tirelessly on foundations scheduled to release in Fall 2019. And while Fenty Beauty may have spearheaded the trend of 40 inclusive foundation shade launches, Gbeleyiis choosing to kick off with 20 shades that will be created from skin scans of real women. You can bet the deep and dark shades won’t go unnoticed. “Some of the default catalogs are very insufficient for darker skin,” she says. “So we want to actually make our foundation based on the skin tones of our own database of women of color.”

“I keep asking people, ‘What do you want?’ Beauty brands [typically] focus on what the brand tells you what you want. That’s dying out,” she adds. “The future of beauty is where people are co-creating brands and making things that people are asking for. The days of, ‘OK we make a product, we spend a ton on advertising and we’re like, ‘Yay, this is great for you,’ is changing.”

Gbeleyi also recently launched a collection of four chocolate-scented nude lipsticks called Skin, with the shade names Desnudo, Flesh (her bestseller), Birthday Suit, and Naked, in collaboration with beauty blogger Ronke Raji, who closely aligns with the brands’ focus. Many women flocked to the lipsticks because they filled a void, that they had been searching for quite some time now.

For the names, Gbeleyi wanted to stay far away from trends she saw her competitors using. “If you see any color that’s called Flesh or Birthday Suit, whether it’s for a cheek or a lip product, it’s likely not going to be a good fit for women of color, period. That’s just the facts,” she says. “So instead of making some fun quirky name, naming it Flesh and having it be a brown color is really much more in sync with what we’re trying to do.”

The bottom line with Makeup for Melanin Girls, she says: “We’re trying to show is that the status quo is insufficient.”

Awkwafina Just Posted the Most Inspiring Message About Making It in Hollywood

Awkwafina‘s had a pretty amazing summer, to say the least. The New York City–born rapper and actress has starred in two major movies: Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians, which hits theaters later this week. For Awkwafina, these milestones come after years of struggling in the acting and music worlds. She released her debut single, “My Vag,” in 2012, but it took years for things to pick up steam. Now she has two albums and a string of acting credits under her belt—and she’s just getting started.

While on her way to the Crazy Rich Asians premiere in Hollywood last week, Awkwafina posted a message to Twitter reflecting on her journey from then to now.

“In 2012 I put a video called ‘My Vag’ on YouTube, knowing that it probably wouldn’t do well – and it would make me the laughing stock of every job interview ever,” she posted. “I wrote a song called ‘NYC Bitches’ while making $9/hr at a vegan bodega. After it went on YouTube, a man came in and asked if I was Awkwafina – it made me so happy.”

She continued, “One day, I got the email of my life. An A&R exec at a major record label wanted to meet with me. I listened to ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac on the way to the meeting. He listened to two of my songs and never called me again.”

That’s a drastically different picture to Awkwafina’s life now. “5 years later, I’m in an Escalade in a gown, driving down Hollywood Blvd. that they shut down of for Crazy Rich Asians,” she wrote. “And I asked the driver for the [auxiliary chord] to play ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac. I became teary, thinking about this moment, what it meant.”

“I remembered those days when I got fired from my job for Awkwafina, when I was broke for Awkwafina, when I got kicked off line-ups because ‘Awkwafina is a joke,'” she expanded. “Awkwafina was a dream I was chasing, and in some ways, I am still chasing her. But we need to take risks. We need to go broke. We need to prove them wrong, simply by not giving up. Awkwafina wasn’t supposed to exist, but somehow she does. And I think about it everyday, that she was born for one reason only – to show every person out there, that it is possible.”

See her message for yourself in the tweet, above. If Awkwafina’s this stoked about her career now, imagine how she’ll feel after this weekend, when Crazy Rich Asians no doubt slays the box office.

Sephora Is Making It Even Easier to Get Extra Reward Points and Deals

We all know how hard it is to leave Sephora with just one item. You know the feeling when you go in there for just an eyeliner and you walk out with a bag full of products? Yeah, us too. And after a couple trips to the register, it feels good to be rewarded for our irresponsible purchases. Sephora has felt our pain over the years and decided to completely revamp its Beauty Insider Program, which means we’re able to save even more. And in even better news, these changes are happening as soon as this month—August 14 to be exact.

As a little FYI, Sephora’s Beauty Loyalty program is broken down into three forms of membership, which is determined based on how much you spend per year. There’s Insider, which you can become by walking in and making a purchase once; VIB, if you spend $350 or more in a calendar year; and Rogue, if you rack up $1,000 in a year. And if you’re one of the customers who always takes the time to fill out those email surveys about changes you want to see, feel free to thank yourself. These changes were made because of membership feedback. Hello, customer appreciation!

VIB and Rogue members will especially benefit from this makeover. Here are some insights into the changes and how you can get more bang for your buck:

Points Per $1: Now when you check out at the register, your points will have even more value. According to Allure, VIB members will now earn 1.25 points for every dollar spent, while Rouge members will now earn 1.5. (The ratio for Insiders will stay at one to one.)

Profile Access: Keeping track of all these points and rewards will be easier than ever, thanks to streamlined and simplified profiles that make it easy to figure out your status, point totals, and potential rewards.

Birthday Gifts: We all look forward to choosing our birthday gifts and while members across all three levels receive a birthday gift, VIB and Rouge members will be able to choose either a gift or 250 extra points.

Rewards: The Rewards Bazaar (where you can trade in those points for rewards) will now have five times as many rewards at the 750+ point level, including two to three full-size products for VIB and Rouge members. Expect more reward options in general, with choices in color, hair care, skin care, fragrance, and even wellness. Rouge members will now also have the option to redeem 2,500 points for a $100 Rouge Reward to use on their favorite Sephora products.

Of course, nothing feels better than getting a deal on top of a deal—which is why we polled our editors for the tricks they use to make the best of their time (and money) at Sephora. Feel free to steal any and all while you put the new perks to use.

Sign up for the Insider Newsletter.
“I know—you need another email in your inbox like a hole in your head, but this one is surprisingly worth it. The newsletter often tips you off first when big sales are coming up, and every week, I always look forward to seeing which stuff will be 50 percent off for the Weekly Wow.” —Maureen Choi, beauty contributor

Download the Sephora app.
“The last thing any of us need is another app with push notifications, but Sephora’s app is legit. It’ll ping you when good deals are on the horizon and a lot of time they have app-exclusive sales that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.” —Lindsay Schallon, senior beauty editor

Cash in your VIB points in-store.
“A little-known fact worth repeating: If you’re a Beauty Insider of any level, you have to make a purchase online in order to cash in points for products. However, this isn’t the case in-store. You can just pop up at the counter, ask to trade them in, and walk out with a free mini haul.” —Sarah Michelson, beauty assistant

Ask for free samples.
“Most people think the only place you can get fragrance samples is at department store counters. But if you ask, most of the time they’ll give you those mini tubes at Sephora. Fragrance is so particular, I always want to give it a full test drive before I buy it.” —Tess Kornfeld, editorial assistant

Sign up for a free beauty class or treatment.
“Sephora is constantly holding free and free-with-purchase beauty classes where you can master new tricks and get treatments. I recently tried its pore vacuum facial, and let me tell you, the results were insane. You do have to spend $75 in the store to get it, but let’s be real, it’s about what you’d spend on two products anyway. That money goes fast.” —Rachel Nussbaum, beauty writer
