Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool Review: The Best Investment I’ve Made

It might be new to some people, but working from home has been my personal “normal” for the past three years as a freelance writer and editor. I like to think that I’ve become something of an expert at creating a comfortable home office—but I’m at a bit of an advantage. I’m lucky enough to have an entire room in my house as a dedicated workspace, so I’m always on the hunt for little (or big) additions to make my home office feel all the more cozy—whether it’s a new lamp, some art to go up on the walls, or a new plant baby. And now that we’re stuck working from home for the foreseeable future, I’ve slowly been making additions to my home office to make it the most productive environment for me, which is why Dyson’s new Pure Humidify+Cool has become a total necessity.

I know, I know. How can an $800 machine be a necessity? I’m already a huge Dyson fan—the company’s vacuums actually make me excited to clean, and I’ve recommended the Airwrap to everyone I know—so I’m inclined to believe that I’ll love every product they launch. For me, it has everything to do with improving my overall quality of life while I’m working at home, which will continue to be the case even after the coronavirus passes.

Kristin Corpuz

To be honest, I never thought much about air quality in my home before I tried out the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool. Of course, I’m big on wearing sunscreen indoors and am hyper-conscious of the fact that Los Angeles (where I live) doesn’t have the best outdoor air quality—not to mention, it is much too dry for someone with my skin type. But I thought that running a small humidifier on my desk and shutting off our central A/C would be sufficient enough to maintain decent air quality at home, and wow, was I wrong.

The new Dyson machine has seriously changed the way I think about the air in my space. Not only does it purify a room by filtering out particles like allergens, bacteria, pollen, and formaldehyde, but it also blows out cool air (which is perfect for those hot L.A. summers). While it’s filtering and blowing air, it also works as a humidifier to keep your space comfortably moist—a godsend if you have dry skin and hair like me. And the best part is that everything is customizable. I can turn it to just one of the settings (or any combination of the three) and can even adjust how each function works; whether I want more or less humidity, or if I want the fan to feel more like a breeze than a blast of cool air. And if I want to monitor what the air quality is like in my space, all I have to do is check the Dyson Link app to read stats picked up by sensors on the machine.

An issue that I’ve always had with room humidifiers is that I forget to clean them out. The water scales inside, and bacteria collect in the still water—which then gets pumped out into the air when I turn the machine back on. Of course, Dyson thought of everything and built in a one-touch deep-clean cycle that does all the cleaning for you. It keeps my mind at ease knowing that I’m using an appliance that really works to keep my home’s air quality as pure as possible, and it sure doesn’t hurt that it’s one less thing to clean in my house right now.

Kelly Clarkson Performing ‘A Little Bit Alexis’ With Annie Murphy Is Pure Gold

Somewhere on location in Bosnia, Moira Rose is shaking in her pajama vest.

On January 30, Annie Murphy had the audacité to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show and perform the Schitt’s Creek classic “A Little Bit Alexis” in front of a live studio audience and the Serious Actors™ of the Oscar-nominated film 1917. You know, the song her character, Alexis Rose, used to audition for her mother’s local production of Cabaret in season five.

For the uninitiated, Schitt’s Creek (created by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy) follows a formerly wealthy family who lose everything and are forced to live in a ramshackle motel in a town they bought as a joke. What sounds like a pretty surface comedy has pierced the hearts of viewers who have watched the Rose family bond and grow through their misfortune.

The one thing that hasn’t changed is Alexis’s lack of self-awareness, and thank God (aka Dan Levy) for that. Doubly, thank Clarkson for reviving the instant classic on her show, with her own Texas spin.

Here are the lyrics of this remix, in case you want to sing along:

Watching Sophie Turner and Jonathan Van Ness Meet for the First Time Is Pure Joy

It’s already been well-documented that Sophie Turner had a great night at the 2019 MTV VMAs. She rocked out to Normani (as one always should), got very excited to take a photo with Lizzo, and hijacked her husband’s moon person after the Jonas Brothers win.

She also met Queer Eye‘s Jonathan Van Ness, which looked incredible from the photos, but now we have video evidence that it was epic for both parties. In true JVN fashion, he reacts to seeing Turner with a scream that, indeed, should only be reserved for when the Queen in the North calls out your name and approaches you with open arms.

“I’m so happy for your ending, oh my God,” he says, speaking of Turner’s character Sansa Stark ending up ruling the North on Game of Thrones. “I was so relieved.” Then he appears to whisper in her ear, “It was the only one I could stomach.” (Many fans of the show were less-than-thrilled with the final season, to the point that some drew up a petition to have it remade.)

[embedded content]

It’s a true mutual admiration between these two as they tell each other how incredible they think the other is. Van Ness also congratulated Turner on her “gorgeous summer”—which, of course included her wedding to Joe Jonas.

Speaking of, Turner makes sure to call him over to meet JVN too—and the two men bow down to each other. JVN is always such a positive force on Queer Eye, and it’s so lovely to see he’s exactly the same when meeting the super-famous.

Honestly, this whole video is exactly the midweek mood lifter we all needed. I, for one, will be keeping it tucked away for a re-watch the next time I’m having a bad day. A Sophie Turner and Jonathan Van Ness podcast needs to happen immediately.

This Video of Luna Negotiating Candy With Chrissy Teigen Is So Pure

We don’t have many pure things left in our world, but one of them is this Instagram video of Chrissy Teigen and her daughter, Luna, having a candy negotiation. What’s a candy negotiation, you ask? Well, it’s exactly like it sounds: Luna wanted some candy from her famous mother, but before closing the deal, they had a conversation about the exact amount.

Teigen dubbed the entire situation “candy court,” and it started with Luna’s opening statement. Her reasoning for requesting the candy was simple: “I want the candy because I want it. And I like it.” I’ve never heard a more compelling argument, TBH.

But this wasn’t good enough for Teigen. She made Luna promise to be good and not scream in her sleep if she got the candy—both terms she agreed to. Then the negotiations started: Teigen initially offered one piece of candy to Luna, which she rejected outright. “I say [three],” Luna said, but Teigen didn’t back down. “What about one?” Teigen said again, to which Luna responded, “No, I want three.” Where was Luna when I was negotiating my salary?!

Teigen caved, slightly, and made Luna a final offer of two pieces. She took the deal. What a master class in business, am I right?

Watch all of this go down in the two videos, below:

These types of videos are staples on Chrissy Teigen‘s Instagram. The Cravings author is always giving us hilarious updates on her family life, whether it’s trolling husband John Legend

…or posting adorable photos like this:

“We didn’t think we’d be those kind of parents who were showing [our children] off all the time,” Teigen told Glamour a few weeks ago in regards to her family’s social media presence. “But it became such a normal part of our life. I was never the kind of person who loved posting selfies, or glam photos. I love taking pictures of other people and posting them. I’m with my kids more than anyone else, so it just kind of happens.”

Amy Poehler's ‘Making It’ Overalls Are the Only Pure Thing Left in the World

There’s a good chance that, like me, you’ve spent the last couple weeks (months? years?) searching high and low for soothing content as a respite from an alarming news cycle. Cat videos, frenzied online shopping sprees, meditation apps…all well and good, but in my eyes, nothing beats Amy Poehler’s overalls on Making It as pure medicine for my tired soul.

Hosted by Poehler and Nick Offerman, the NBC show is, by far, the feel-good show of the year. It’s a crafting competition full of adorable pun-offs, sweet bits, and the kind of gentle encouragement most of us can only dream of ever receiving in a work environment—think The Great British Baking Show but with woodworking instead of Victoria sponge cakes. It’s an absolute delight. In every episode Poehler appears in a pair of sturdy overalls, her version of a host uniform. And at this point, spotting her signature outfit is as comforting to me as catching a whiff of my favorite calming candle. As soon as I lay eyes on those strapping dungarees, I know that I’ve made it to the good place.

These overalls are a quiet constant in an increasingly inconsistent and discordant world—and every week Poehler delivers. They bring peace and harmony to my aching psyche and deserve to be celebrated as such. Having spent the majority of the mid-eighties and early nineties frolicking in overalls of the OshKosh B’Gosh variety, seeing Poehler in her own grown-up version of the ultimate play clothes tugs at my heartstrings in a way I never anticipated. These aren’t high-end silk “fashion” rompers we’re talking about; they’re utilitarian, comfy, and simple, just like the overalls my sister and I lived in during our blissed-out, sweet childhood.

Poehler’s overalls set the down-to-earth tone that underlies the entire series. Her casual, easy-going attire helps the contestants feel at ease and lets their handicrafts shine. As the host of a TV show on a major network—and a legitimate celebrity—Poehler easily could have made every episode a dramatic fashion moment designed to make her look her glamorous best. But nope! She went the overalls route, and whether they’re maroon, blue denim, olive green, or black, they’re always practical, comfortable, and low-key (and almost always are paired with an equally chill button-down).

Much like exercising, listening to true-crime podcasts, and petting my dog, Poehler’s overalls are the balm for which my soul has been yearning. (And if you’re not caught up, wait until you see her formal overalls from the season finale.) Have you ever heard of anything so pure and good? And as if that weren’t enough, they’re also the best fall outfit inspiration for the cozy weeks and months ahead. While her overalls are of the hearty, utilitarian variety, there’s a whole host of styles available these days, for any type of shopper.

Shawn Mendes' Reactions to Fans Covering His Songs Are Just So Pure

Shawn Mendes has some capital B bops. “Treat You Better” has a chorus that still slams even after 15 straight listens; “Lost in Japan” is super funky and fun; and “Youth” (with Khalid) pulsates even with all that guitar pluckiness. Mendes has a great voice, too, so you can’t go wrong with adding several of his songs to your next Spotify playlist.

And while you’re at it, maybe consider adding a few fan covers to your playlist too. The pop sensibility of Mendes’ music makes it very easy to interpret and cover in a variety of different ways. From slowed-down acoustic covers to harp instrumentals and piano sets, Mendes’ fans on YouTube are super creative when it comes to their covers.

So, naturally, we had to get Mendes’ thoughts on a few of them. We had the “Stitches” singer stop by our office recently and check out a bunch of fan covers of his songs on the Internet. His responses, of course, were so sweet and pure.

“You know what’s so awesome is that you can clearly tell when someone’s done editing to their voice, and she’s completely natural,” Mendes said of person covering his music. “You sound like you kill it every time,” he said of someone else.

Even more wonderful than Mendes’ reactions are his fans’ faces when they realize he was listening. “That’s why I post covers to maybe get recognized by one of my favorite artists and, well, I guess that just happened,” one fan said. “I never thought this would ever, ever, ever happen. I’m so happy. Thank you.”

Watch all the covers (and Mendes’ reactions) for yourself in the video, above.
