Miss Universe Is Making History with the Pageant's First Openly Trans Contestant

When Angela Ponce takes the stage during this year’s Miss Universe pageant—all tan lithe limbs and radiant blowout in a hot pink bikini—it’s easy to see why she’s favored to win the competition, currently underway in Thailand. Tall, blonde, soft-spoken and impeccably glamorous, she’s a walking archetype of what you might imagine one Donald J. Trump envisioning as the perfect pageant queen. (He owned Miss Universe from 1996 to 2015.) But Ponce, who currently holds the title of Miss Spain 2018, is much more representative of the pageant’s future than its past—she’s the first openly transgender woman to ever compete for the crown.

The very fact of Ponce’s candidacy is historic. Being on the world stage as an openly transgender woman in a role that’s traditionally been held up as the the ultimate embodiment of womanhood is damn impressive (and overdue). “It’s important that people can see you to feel that they have a positive reference,” Ponce says. “It’s important that people see women like me to know that the ideas they may have about transgender people aren’t always true.”

But Ponce isn’t interested in simply being a silent symbol. She’s taking advantage of her moment on the global stage to speak out about the issue of gender identity—specifically, the rights of transgender adults and minors to be able to define their correct gender on official forms of ID. “It’s about [fighting for] the right to be,” she says. “It would diminish bullying and prejudice and the pain that society puts on us, unintentionally, for not knowing more about being transgender.”

The thing is, these simple semantics matter. The right to be addressed and identified correctly, would have made a big difference for Ponce growing up, she says, citing the total sense of vulnerability and rejection she felt when her childhood doctor continued to refer to her by her previous (male) name.

That brings us, inevitably, to Donald Trump, whose long history with the Miss Universe pageant, and of making disparaging comments about transgender individuals, loom large over our conversation. Earlier this year, the Trump administration signaled it would attempt to roll back civil rights protections of transgender individuals under federal law—effectively erasing the estimated 1.4 million adults who identify as trans in the U.S. In Trump’s view, gender is an unchangeable fact defined by the genitalia you are born with.

Despite this—or likely, let’s be honest, because of it—Ponce says she’d love the chance to sit down with President Trump. “I really don’t know what might cross his mind…but I would like to have a conversation one human being to another and try to explain to him that the rights I am fighting for are simply the rights of every human being,” she says. “I would try to make him feel in his heart the importance of understanding other people. And I would try to help him understand with the position that he’s in, he could help save lives.”

In a pageant that’s already had a cringe-worthy controversy, Ponce’s platform of understanding and equality might be why some reports have her favored to win the crown. “I’m working very hard to win and I would be very proud to achieve that,” she says, “not only for my country nor for myself but for all the people whose situation in the world could change if they called my name.” With her historic role and fight to be seen, Ponce has already proved that trans people are a minority that can’t be ignored—or erased.

The Miss Universe pageant will air live December 16 at 7:00 P.M. ET on FOX.

Target Is Making Ugly Holiday Sweater Dresses Now, and They're a Sight to Behold

The wackiest display of the holiday cheer isn’t happening on the Hallmark Channel or Netflix’s original movie selection this year. Rather, you can find it in an aisle of your local Target. You know ugly sweaters are A Thing—but in 2018 the retailer is leveling up, offering a line of ugly sweaterdresses just in time for holiday parties. And they’re really something.

Target’s collection of festive knits has everything: a toy soldier, a snowman’s face, and even a two-tone blue menorah—all rendered into long-sleeve, short-skirted silhouettes. Each one takes the charm of an ugly holiday sweater and multiplies it by 10, just by having that much more room to show your seasonal spirit. And because they’re all under $50, you can justify onetime usage (or buying multiples, because why not?).

If your office, friend group, or family is having an ugly-holiday-sweater competition, these dresses are likely to win first place. Check out Target’s new riff on a seasonal favorite, ahead.

Fifth Harmony's Ally Brooke on Making Her First Solo Album

Becoming a solo artist has been an incredible new chapter of my life. After Fifth Harmony, I felt a mix of so many emotions—but most of all, I felt excited about what was to come next. For the first time in my career, I feel like I genuinely have the power to collaborate with who I want, and I’m contributing ideas to a strong, healthy team. To finally be in control is so important to me because this is my career. These are the songs my voice will be heard through.

One of the most exciting moments in this chapter happened after my team came to me in early September with the idea of hosting an all-female writing camp. I had been recording for most of the summer in a very male-dominated industry, so being able to switch gears and get a bunch of women together sounded amazing. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve always felt respected by the male songwriters and producers I’ve worked with, and we’ve had a blast together. But there’s nothing quite like the female energy, is there?

This is my career. These are the songs my voice will be heard through.

So we set up a two-day camp at Glenwood Studios later that month with about 15 talented and diverse female engineers, producers, and songwriters. Everyone had different backgrounds, stories, and credits to their name, but we all arrived with the same intentions: to uplift each other, to make our community stronger, and to highlight how beautiful it is for women to band together.

I hadn’t worked with anyone in the camp before, so we started by going around the room over lunch and introducing ourselves. We spoke about why we got into music, and I was moved by everyone’s stories. One of the engineers revealed that she’s a professional tango dancer; another producer talked about how she almost went into accounting. When my time came to speak, I opened up about how much I had learned during my time in Fifth Harmony—and all the experiences I wanted to talk about now that I’m on my own.

After we finished introductions, everyone split into two rooms. I went into Studio B first and recorded the most vulnerable record I’ve ever done. There were six of us in the room starting completely from scratch, but one of the producers picked up a guitar, played a chord, and the song just took off from there. We were sharing our raw emotions with each other, and it felt like we were all connected. It was empowering to be in that space, to be surrounded by women actually embracing and lifting each other up. There were no egos, no hidden agendas, nobody wanting to take all the credit. It was so powerful to be in a session where I felt I could be myself. I felt safe enough to be vulnerable.

There were no egos, no hidden agendas, nobody wanting to take all the credit.

The song came out beautifully, and I’m so proud to have cowritten it. It’s self-reflective, inspired by the honest emotions that we all share as women. I can’t wait to share it.

This is why I think it’s imperative that women support other women. We’re such powerful beings. We love hard. We possess so much feeling inside of us. We work hard and chase our dreams. Imagine what we can achieve when we come together. There are so many women—not just in my industry—who need our help and our voices. We should be friends to one another, and it breaks my heart when we aren’t kind to our own. I’ve experienced it, and it’s terrible. It cuts you deep. Working with the amazing women at the writing camp reminded me that we’re all unique and have something incredible to offer. When we come together, we can change the world.

Why Does Pete Davidson Keep Making Jokes About His Breakup With Ariana Grande?

Pete Davidson can’t stop, won’t stop making jokes about his breakup with Ariana Grande. On the one hand, this shouldn’t surprise people: He’s a comedian on Saturday Night Live, after all, and has a history of saying things that aren’t the most appropriate. But the fact he’s being so casual about this high-profile uncoupling is a bit perplexing considering how intense they were just a few weeks ago.

He reportedly first broke his silence on Grande while performing at a Los Angeles benefit on Saturday, October 20. “Um, I’ve been covering a bunch of tattoos; that’s fun,” Davidson said, nodding to all the couple tats he and Grande received during their whirlwind relationship. “I’m fucking 0 for 2 in the tattoo [department].”

Davidson allegedly ended this set with a joke about needing a new roommate now that he’s moved out of the $16 million apartment Grande bought for them. “Does anybody have any open rooms? Looking for a roommate?” he said, according to E! News.

He’s at it again this week. One of the promos for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live features Davidson making a quip about his short-lived engagement to Grande. In the 40-second video, which we included below, Davidson asks musical guest Maggie Rogers to marry him, and she curtly responds “No.” “0 for 3,” Davidson then remarks, a not-so-subtle jab at his relationship track record. (He seriously dated Cazzie David for two years before starting things with Grande.)

[embedded content]

The video rubbed many people the wrong way—including Grande, who posted a few pointed tweets shortly after it went live. “For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh,” she wrote.

So what gives? Why is Davidson making all these jokes even though it’s clearly upsetting Grande, not to mention her legion of fans? One source tells Entertainment Tonight that he’s using humor as a defense mechanism. “His friends think he is embarrassed by the breakup and that he has to overcompensate by making jokes about their relationship, because, days before they split, he was saying they would never break up,” the source revealed.

But another source directly contradicts this and says Davidson isn’t embarrassed about anything. “He’s obviously hurt it didn’t work out but is doing his best to move on. Anyone would be hurt after an engagement was broken off,” they said. “Pete joked about him and Ariana [when they were together]. So joking about breaking up and their relationship is not new.”

I don’t personally know Pete Davidson or Ariana Grande, so offering legitimate suggestions for how they should navigate their breakup feels silly. I mean, this is a union that featured baby pigs and “Honest to God Knock Me Out” tattoos and approximately 9,000 bean bags; it’s far beyond the understanding of us mere mortals. There’s a song on Grande’s album literally called “Pete Davidson.” Your guess for what these two should do about this messy situation is as good as mine.

That being said, a good first step might be to…not say anything for a while. Grande has since deleted her shady tweets, which suggests she might not be ready to talk about the breakup. Davidson should probably follow suit—out of respect for her and, ya know, Piggy Smalls. Think of the pig, Pete!

This Is the Trick to Making Lip Liner Cool Again

I’m a liquid lipstick fiend. You name the shade, and I’ve got a few tubes that fit the bill. I know some people aren’t a fan, but our love is true; I love the look and the long-lasting finish. But this isn’t a story about liquid lipstick. It’s a story about the simple combination that’s managed to unseat my usual routine, in favor of a one-two punch that looks gorgeous, lasts forever, and doesn’t dry out my lips in the process. It’s lip liner, back in action and better than ever.

But it’s not the lip liner you know. Where the first wave of liners were scratchy, stiffly pigmented formulas meant as a barrier so your lipstick wouldn’t bleed, I’ve started wearing Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat lip liner 24/7. The creamy formula goes on easily, and brings with it a subtle tackiness that you know isn’t going to budge. I fill my lips in all the way, specifically in the shade “Walk of Shame,” a deep berry-rose color. I top it with Charlotte Tilbury’s Superstar Lips balm in the same shade, and look upon nirvana.

It’s impeccable math. The glossy, balmy formula doesn’t add a ton of shine but brings a dose of hydration that keeps my lips alive and kicking. The look is precise thanks to the liner, but feels low-maintenance since the balm lends the combination a flexible texture. And yet the layered colors last all day, making good on lip liner’s promise to never leave your side.

Lip liner used to be crucial. I started learning about how to do makeup from the how-to videos on Lancôme’s website, in the distant, pre-YouTube past. The videos are long gone, but I’ll always have the memory of a French-accented voice-over instructing viewers to fill in your lips with liner, before topping it with a lipstick. I absorbed the knowledge like a sponge, but it wasn’t relevant to my life at the time, and the image of a prim model layering her lip products didn’t resonate and felt like a needless step.

Now, though, lip liner has a real underdog feeling to it. When it’s decked out in pretty packaging and topped with lip balm, I’m here for its revival.

Taylor Swift Is Making Another Political Statement on Instagram

If you thought you’d seen the end of Taylor Swift’s highly charged political posts, think again: Political Taylor is back, and this time she’s taken to Instagram to double down on her ask that her fans vote in the midterm elections.

On Saturday (October 21), the singer uploaded a series of photos to her Instagram stories, all reposts of her fans mobilizing at the polls over the last few days. With 22 photos in total, Swift’s Instagram story sends a big message: The star is not backing down on using her social platforms to voice her political views, even if that means losing a few conservative male fans along the way.

Even Katy Perry—who’s previously had her disagreements with Swift—has taken notice of the the change in Swift’s previously mum stance on politics, telling Variety at the amfAR Gala on Thursday that “she’s setting a great example.”

Many of the photos that Swift uploaded to her to Instagram story this weekend feature first-time voters, which only further proves the star’s major social influence. Other posts show fans voting in the singer’s home state of Tennessee, and all include personalized notes from the star.

“I love reading your stories on why voting matters to you,” Swift wrote on one repost. “I’m so grateful to get to hear them.” Check out some of the singer’s Instagram story reposts, here below:

This weekend’s reposts come on the heels of the singer’s recent decision to speak out about voting in her home state of Tennessee. On October 7th, the star posted a lengthy Instagram message explaining why she’s been notoriously apolitical—until now.

“I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee,” she wrote. “In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.”

She then switched the focus to her fans—many of whom are now legally able to cast votes in their respective states—imploring them to educate themselves on the candidates running in their districts and asking that, no matter what their political views, they make their way to the polls this fall.

“Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway,” Swift wrote. “So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count.”

While this decisively political statement was Swift’s first, it appears appears to have had a massive impact on her fanbase, with Vote.org noting a spike in voter registration (65,000, to be exact) in the 24 hours following Swift’s Instagram call-to-action. The star followed up this post with a second political statement at the AMAs, using her award acceptance speech as an opportunity to say: “I wanted to make a mention of the fact that this award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people. And you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on November 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys.”
