Billy Porter Had an Epic Response to People Who Are Mad He's Wearing a Dress on Sesame Street


Billy Porter has been killing it on the red carpet this awards season—turning out look after look and becoming a style icon in the process. Of course, this isn’t anything new if you’ve followed the Pose star’s career. He’s always been a fashion trailblazer. Just last year he wore a custom-made Christian Siriano tuxedo dress to the 2019 Oscars—a dress he’ll wear again on his upcoming appearance on Sesame Street.

Which has some people (read: trolls) in a tizzy. According to Page Six, a petition is being circulated calling for Sesame Street to pull Porter’s episode. “Do you approve of your taxpayer dollars being used to promote the radical LGBTQ agenda?” raged one critic, per Page Six. The petition itself reportedly accuses Sesame Street of trying to “sexualize children using drag queens” (which…doesn’t even make sense).

But Billy Porter isn’t sweating any of the criticism. “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it,” he told Page Six.

He continued, “Like, what about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?” and later added, “The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex…Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine—that is none of your business.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself, TBH. I’m very happy Porter isn’t paying this any mind. He’s too perfect and iconic to be bothered. The man is one trophy away to becoming an EGOT, for crying out loud (the only one missing is an Oscar). Literally if some tries to come for him again he can just cackle and point to his Emmy. I, for one, can’t wait to see him rock this dress again on Sesame Street. Give me all the style inspo.

Meryl Streep and Billy Porter Hug at 2020 Golden Globes


The Golden Globes hadn’t even gotten underway yet, but we already have one of the standout moments of the night involving two of our favorites: Meryl Streep and Billy Porter.

In footage captured as the celebrities got settled in the ballroom, a camera captured a perfect moment between the two stars where they greeted each other, hugged, and kept on hugging. Now all I can imagine is a meeting between Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada) and Pray Tell (Pose). Just imagine the conversations they could have about cerulean blue, fashion history, and what he’s wearing to the next ball. The category is…my dreams!

Watch the moment for yourself below. “How many celebrities can you see? Don’t miss the part where Meryl Streep hugs Billy Porter. #GoldenGlobes,” Ramin Setoodeh tweeted with the footage.

Given how much the internet loves both a Streep and a Porter meme—you know you’ve used that gif of her and J. Lo clapping a million times—people were very excited, to say the least. “Meryl hugging Billy Porter, I’m not okay,” one person tweeted. “MERYL TOUCHING BILLY’S COAT!!!! i’m dying, she’s so cute ?????,” another wrote. And we think this person definitely has the right idea: “This is everything. Please can Meryl and Billy work together? #GoldenGlobes.”

At one point, Porter appears to say to Streep, “You didn’t see the train, boo.” And, well, that was just perfection.

Then, they threw Ana de Armas from Knives Out and Taron Egerton into the mix.

This is why the Golden Globes are always the most fun awards show of the bunch. You’ve got film legends like Meryl Streep chatting with newly crowned TV legends like Billy Porter—and that’s before the stars even sat down and started drinking all that champagne at the table. We can’t wait for the next commercial break to see what other celebrity worlds collide as famous people scramble back to their tables.

Watching Mariah Carey on Billy on the Street Is a Masterclass in Christmas Joy


Mariah Carey celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah on a holiday segment of Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner. She hugged strangers, conversed in Swedish, and performed a minor DIY crafting project.

The video, released online on December 16, is six blissful minutes of the legendary diva canvassing the streets of Manhattan, trying to be a good sport but looking like she’s getting her adult braces tightened. It’s 367 seconds of the Queen of Christmas descending from her throne to connect with her subjects during the darkest days of the year. It’s butterflies and mistletoes and menorahs and a very funny look into the celebrity-industrial complex. Let’s go Lambily, let’s go.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the Mariah Carey Christmas album, which includes the greatest Christmas song of the last 100 years, All I Want for Christmas Is You, which she says in the video she wrote in “fully, maybe an hour and a half.” The song’s power is not to be dismissed–after two and a half decades, it became a number one song literally during the writing of this article.

The 49-year-old—draped in crimson and trimmed in gold, hair like a butterscotch waterfall, contour casting a dramatic shadow like Santa himself leaping out of a fireplace—joined Eichner in his favorite activity: accosting people on the streets of New York with questions and demands.

Most episodes of Billy on the Street, Eichner’s beloved gameshow, take place during daylight. Mariah’s nighttime segment seems both more seasonally whimsical and also makes me wonder if she has a rider that says she won’t appear on camera in direct sunlight. Hopefully they gave her whatever she wanted—it’s clear that a master is at work here. In the course of the short video she: sings “I Have A Little Dreidel” from memory, speaks Swedish then appropriately acknowledges that she is showing off, kindly validates a man who says he was both naughty and nice this year, shakes hands with a puppy, and participates in a group hug.

It is written all over Mariah Carey’s face that she longs to be stretched out before a roaring fire in a remote chalet, drinking Veuve as a manservant drops by with a velvet-lined hutch filled with baby bunnies for her amusement. Her gameness to participate in this activity, which seems to represent everything I imagine she loathes (lack of creative control, unfettered contact with random people, etc) feels loving. This woman who has already given us so much—she’s the female singer with the greatest number of Billboard 100 number-one hits in history, as Billy points out—is still willing to totter around carrying a heart-eyes emoji Christmas ornament, trying to get strangers to kiss.

Mariah Carey’s voice sounds like sparkles and the taste of eggnog, her songs jolt the heart, and her presence as an improviser is deliciously uncomfortable. Like most of the Billy on the Street videos, her on-the-street segment gently reminds us that, like politicians, celebrities need us more than we need them. Part of Billy Eichner’s genius is to expose the mechanisms of that relationship without being mean, and with Mariah, who’s so beloved yet typically aloof, he is especially successful. Fans and celebrities are a weird, symbiotic family of entertainers and the entertained, passing each other on dark streets, trying to have moments of joy. And also, in Mariah’s case, to establish appropriate boundaries. And may it be so, for us all. ‘Tis the season to have balance.

Billy Eichner and Tiffany Haddish Want to Do a 'Woke' Remake of 'Hocus Pocus'


Who better to update Hocus Pocus in 2018 than Billy Eichner and Tiffany Haddish? That was the basic premise behind the latest episode of Billy on the Street, the man-on-the-street quiz show that features Eichner and his famous pals basically accosting New York City civilians all in the name of pop culture. In other words: Best. Show. Ever.

This episode featured Eichner and Haddish casting themselves as two of the witches in a hypothetical, more inclusive remake of the Halloween classic, which they fittingly dubbed Wokus Pocus. Once that’s settled, they set out in search of the a third witch to complete the trifecta, and hilarity ensues.

Among the candidates that are briefly auditioned are a Brazilian woman (an encounter that lets Haddish show off her excellent Samba skills), a Chinese woman (which prompts Eichner to come up with her own spin-off called Crazy Witch Asians), and a Colombian man. The only thing we can’t abide by in this otherwise delightful video is the shade that Eichner then throws at Kathy Najimy, one of the witches in the original Hocus Pocus coven. After the man informs Eichner and Haddish that their movie needs some Latin Flavor, Eichner says, “You’ve definitely got more flavor than Kathy Najimy, I’ll tell you that much.” Um, no.

That comment notwithstanding, we would definitely pay money to watch Eichner and Haddish in Wokus Pocus. Come to think of it, we’d line up to watch these two in anything. Are you listening, Hollywood?

Billy Bush Writes 'New York Times' Op-Ed Stating the Access Hollywood Tape Is True


Late last night, The New York Times published a new op-ed written by former Access Hollywood host, Billy Bush, titled “Yes, Donald. You Said That.”

Of course, the quotes Bush is referring to are those from the infamous tape in which the now President says:

“I moved on her like a bitch. But I couldn’t get there. And she was
married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony
tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look…I better use
some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m
automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s
like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star,
they let you do it. You can do anything…Grab ’em by the pussy. You
can do anything.”

Bush is heard egging Trump on throughout the tape, was summarily fired by NBC, and now he seems to be on a publicity tour to rehab his image—even tweeting, “Well, you asked…” when sharing the Times piece—and frankly, I’ve got no time for it.

Actually, Billy, I don’t think we did. Reports started circulating last week that the President had privately expressed that perhaps the tape was faked, even though at the time he told The Washington Post: “This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course—not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended.”

Here’s the thing: Anyone who actually thinks that tape isn’t real is never going to be convinced otherwise. We all know there’s a segment of Trump’s base who will side with him, no matter what facts are presented to the contrary. There was not ever any real dispute over the veracity of the tape. We didn’t need Billy Bush to confirm it.

Now, the substance of Bush’s op-ed isn’t all bad, per se. He says that he believes the women who have accused Trump of misconduct. Great. He admits that he was “guilty of sacrificing a bit of ourselves in the name of success.” We all knew that, but OK, I’m glad you can say it out loud now. He writes, “The activist and gender-relations expert Jackson Katz has said that this is not a women’s issue—it’s a men’s issue. That’s a great place to start, and something I have real thoughts about—but it is a story for another day.” True, but what are you waiting for? Probably a book deal.

I’m sure I sound a little cynical, and that’s probably because I am. How can you not be, given how we’ve watched the failing upward of men behaving badly so many times? This happened and Trump became the President of the United States. Yeah, I’m cynical. But also, I just don’t have time right now to help make men feel better about what they’ve done. This moment in time is so utterly raw, emotional, and triggering for women. We are too busy taking care of one another to give Bush a warm pat on the back for performing what I suppose he considers “wokeness.”

“On a personal note, this last year has been an odyssey, the likes of
which I hope to never face again: anger, anxiety, betrayal,
humiliation, many selfish but, I hope, understandable emotions. But
these have given way to light, both spiritual and intellectual. It’s
been fortifying.

I know that I don’t need the accouterments of fame to know God and be
happy. After everything over the last year, I think I’m a better man
and father to my three teenage daughters—far from perfect, but
better.”

I’ll take a hard pass on all this rhetoric, especially the part where you try to use your daughters for sympathy, like so many men before you. I do feel for them, very much. But they shouldn’t be a tool you use to get your career back.

I hope you continue to evolve as a person, Billy Bush. Seriously, I do. Just keep it to yourself.

Dacre Montgomery on Billy, the Sexy-but-Scary New Addition to 'Stranger Things'


Caution: This post contains minor spoilers for season two of Stranger Things.

Newcomer Billy (played by Zac Efron lookalike Dacre Montgomery) is a welcome addition to Hawkins, Indiana…for horny teen girls and suburban moms, that is. To everyone else, he’s a nightmare almost on the level of the Demogorgon. And like most burgeoning psychopaths, the deeply disturbed teenager has two sides: his true self—a dark being who terrorizes his younger stepsister, Max, and her friends—and his public persona, a suave and sexy heartthrob with piercing blue eyes and a winning smile.

It’s a hard balance to pull off authentically, but executive producer Shawn Levy says Dacre was the obvious pick for the part. “He’s absurdly pretty and ridiculously charming in real life too,” Shawn explains. “We feel like Dacre was genetically engineered to be a heartthrob. As soon as we saw his audition, he got the part. We’ve never cast anyone else without a callback, except Dacre. We saw his tape from Australia, and in three lines, the Duffers and I were texting each other. We were like, ‘He’s Billy. Book him right now. Lock him up right this frickin’ minute.'”

Their gamble paid off: Dacre manages to make even somebody as maniacal as Billy seem somewhat redeemable, most notably in a scene where we realize a lot of his behavior was learned from his equally scary father. “Initially Billy’s perceived as a maniac, but I think there are many redeemable qualities about him,” Dacre tells us. “We get some exposition around that with his father, to see why he is the way he is. The Duffers and I had a discussion early on this season about giving Billy something like that, because humanizing the antagonist is the best thing to do for the character. I tried to do that, but doing that scene helped push that along.”

“I mean, he’s an awful human being, but you know where it’s coming from,” Sadie Sink, who plays his stepsister Max, adds. “Once you see his dad, you’re like, ‘They’re both awful human beings.’ It’s a sad family situation. The relationship between Max and Billy is definitely intense, but it was fun to film because it challenges me as an actress. You feel so bad for her, but you feel bad for Billy because you find out where his anger is coming from, so it’s very complicated.”

That complicated relationship between Max and Billy didn’t extend offscreen, though. “Sadie seems a lot older than she is. She’s definitely an old soul, but we had fun,” Dacre explains. “That probably sounds ludicrous, because a lot of the scenes are intense, but we get along well. There was no chemistry read prior, so we had never met each other. She has a wonderful family that comes to set with her as well, so it felt extremely secure and safe. I don’t like to think I’m a person that’s going to throw something crazy at her. I’m not going to put her in any situation that makes her feel uncomfortable. I have a sister that’s the same age difference, and she’s my only sibling, so I feel close to that relationship.”

It helps to see a more human side of Billy, but the best scene with him, hands down, is when he runs into Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono). The two share a brief (and hilarious) moment of flirtation that many fans are hoping will be revisited in season three. That chemistry between Cara and Dacre was there from the start, though. “I took a picture of Dacre at the read-through,” Cara reveals. “We were sitting next to each other, and he was just so charming and handsome and lovely, so I said, ‘I just want a picture to commemorate this moment.’ I didn’t know what they were planning, because they tell you things are going to happen one way and then they save it for another season. So when the scene came up, I thought, This is very interesting going on with Karen Wheeler! It was just a lot of fun to shoot it. We all tried not to laugh. Dacre is a phenomenal actor and very, very sexy.”

“That scene is an instant classic,” Shawn adds. “The way Dacre takes that cookie at the end was not scripted. Dacre improvised, kind of like Brando with the peach in A Streetcar Named Desire, to make it something kind of animalistic and dangerous, but also, ‘I need to have sex with him right now.’ All of that in one!”

But don’t expect Billy to get a total redemption story in season three. “I think something far more sinister is going to happen,” Dacre shares. “It’s resting at the surface level to an extent, so I think a lot of stuff is going to happen. I would like to see Billy fall in love. That would humanize him even more and be a contrast, if something more sinister does happen and we’ve got this love story happening on the sidelines. I don’t write the show, obviously, but the Duffers are extremely collaborative.”
