The Delightful Voyeurism of Watching News Anchors Report From Their Homes

The charms of self-quarantine are limited, and all of them are odd. Find out how much of your own body hair you can remove using your rapidly lengthening fingernails! Develop a crush on the one bird you keep seeing from your window!

Please, help yourself to one more accidental delight of this deeply unpleasant time: watching straight-faced news anchors broadcast from their homes, in front of their decorative rock collections, their wedding photos, and their psychedelic posters.

While some news anchors continue to beam into homes nationwide from formal studios, even as the number of deaths from COVID-19 double every three days, more—including the wonderful anchors on PBS News Hour—are broadcasting from home, standing in front of blank walls that producers (often also working from home) manipulate to look like “real” studios. You may not have been able to tell since he was standing in front of a stock photo of lower Manhattan, but MSNBC’s Ali Velshi reported live this week from his home for the first time in his three-decade career.

This feeble attempt at business-as-usual, though well-intentioned, must go. To hell with the over-pixelated images of twinkling skyscrapers and sepia-toned close-ups of cityscapes that networks think we want to see behind newscasters’ heads. Give us instead, Rachel Maddow’s breakfast nook. Let us see Jake Tapper’s man cave. Give us someone’s house cat crawling unexpectedly across a graphic comparing the S&P to the NASDAQ. Show us Ari Melber trying to conceal his irritation as someone in his house keeps flushing the toilet.

A true queen protects her health and works in front of a massive wine cooler

When news anchors do broadcast from home—with no faux background or support team—it’s enchanting. As newscasters are, more than ever, the messengers of terrible tidings, feast your eyes on CNBC’s Bob Pisani’s lovingly framed Grateful Dead poster. Play I-Spy on Steve Liesman’s desk, covered in tangled wires and a TV remote. Luxuriate in Joy Reid’s tasteful bookshelf plants. Sure, Pisani, a financial reporter, is in the process of breaking down a graph enigmatically labeled “PIMCO SHORT MAT STRAT,” but I, a home-bound viewer, am focused on his free-standing shelving unit of carved Buddha figurines.

Robin Roberts, who has survived cancer and lives with a rare blood disorder, cited her underlying health conditions as one of the reasons she will be shooting *Good Morning America* from home. Not only is she practicing excellent social distancing behavior and offering a masterclass in speaking up for her needs, she is also modeling matching your top to your flower arrangement and broadcasting in front of what appears to be a wine storage cabinet. Roberts showed off a beautiful dog and a giant geode (which a surprising number of anchors seem to have—what’s up with the rocks, journalists?). Meanwhile, Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, taking precautions because of a cold, broadcast barefoot from her basement, with help from her husband. Her fellow co-host Craig Melvin appeared on air from what looked like a hallway covered in palm-tree patterned wallpaper, featuring a Pinterest-y framed sign that reads, “Never Stop.”

Is Taylor Swift Engaged to Joe Alwyn? Fans Think So After Watching ‘Miss Americana’

Is Taylor Swift about to become Taylor Swift-Alwyn? Some fans seem to think so after watching Miss Americana, the pop star’s new documentary that dropped on Netflix on January 31.

The scene that sparked a million fan theories takes place when Swift is describing her choice to start speaking out about her political views and be on “the right side of history.” Taking a look back, that jewelry the singer wears in the interview clip does look like it could be an engagement ring. (Not to mention, it is on her left hand.)

Netflix

But did Alwyn, Swift’s boyfriend of three years, propose? Miss Americana director Lana Wilson claims she is none the wiser on that particular subject. “Whoa. I’m going to have to revisit that scene,” she told InStyle.

Either way, some Swifties on social media are rolling with it.

However, not all are convinced. One user believes Swift would “let her fans know.”

Would she, though? For the entirety of her relationship with the actor, their romance has been incredibly low-key. I mean, this picture is the closest image on Getty I could find of the two of them kind of both looking at the camera.

Taylor…could you just…lift your head, like, two centimeters?

In Miss Americana, Swift explains that Alwyn was a big part of her self-exile from media after the whole Kim Kardashian West Receipt-gate. “When people fall out of love with you, there’s nothing you can do to make them change their mind,” she says in the doc. “They just don’t love you anymore. I just wanted to disappear. Nobody physically saw me for a year and that was what I thought they wanted.” Her relationship with Alwyn helped immensely.

“I also was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life,” she continues. “And we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private.” More important, there was nothing staged about their love story, something that the singer has been accused of more than once. “I wasn’t happy in the way I was trained to be happy. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. It’s, just, we were happy.”

Watching Jerry From ‘Cheer’ Mat-Talk Strangers Will Make Your Entire Day

  1. The man is pure sunshine. Just check his Instagram.
  2. His backstory is enough to make anyone’s heart melt.
  3. He is a consistent role model for every single person on the team, whether he was on the mat that day or not.

But the thing about Jerry that stood out the most was his spectacular “mat talk,” i.e., the shouts of encouragement for his fellow squad members as they tumbled, cradled, and hit their pyramid. Pretty much every person on earth could use a Jerry, TBH.

Netflix obviously agrees. On January 29, the Netflix Twitter account posted a new video of Jerry “mat talking” everyday people on their way to work, and it’s as glorious as you’d expect.

“WELCOME TO WORK,” Jerry shouts at unsuspecting office workers. He was there with his signature smile, a high-five or a hug for those who wanted it, and words of encouragement for all! The best part, though, had to be when he just shouted random descriptions at people as they went by. “Yes heels,” indeed.

Watch for yourself, below:

Frankly, I hope the Cheer press tour never ends. The entire squad is busy performing on Ellen, meeting celebs, and setting the record straight about Lexi’s obsession with raves. The only thing left to do is wait for word on season two….

Brad Pitt Watching Jennifer Aniston's SAG Award Speech Is So Sweet

Jennifer Aniston took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series on Sunday, January 19, and she had someone very important watching her speech: Brad Pitt.

Yes, Pitt—who had just won the SAG for Best Supporting Actor—made a point to catch Aniston’s speech while he was backstage. “Another look at Brad Pitt watching Jennifer Aniston winning her statue for #TheMorningShow at the #SAGAwards,” The Hollywood Reporter captioned a tweet with a video of Pitt. Watch it for yourself, below:

Earlier in the evening, cameras caught Aniston’s reaction to a marriage joke Pitt made in his acceptance speech. He quipped that playing a character “who gets high, takes his shift off and doesn’t get on with his wife” was a stretch, which got a smile out of Aniston.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston had a brief reunion backstage at the SAGs. Here are some photos of that:

But don’t think any of this is a sign they’re getting back together. These two are just good friends—Pitt said as much at the Golden Globes when asked if he hoped to run into Aniston at the show. “I’ll run into Jen. She’s a good friend. The second most important reunion of her year,” he said, making a subtle nod to all the rumors the Friends cast is reuniting.

According to E! News, the two also had a friendly (but brief) catch-up session at a Golden Globes after-party. “They said hello very quickly,” a source said. “Jen arrived after Brad. It was brief, but [they] were very cordial and friendly and seemed happy to be there. They approached each other once they saw each other inside and looked happy as they started to hug and say hello. Jen whispered something to Brad, but it wasn’t in an affectionate way. They both didn’t seem like they wanted to make a big deal about being together in the same room although it was a private party. They were trying to be low-key. Brad left shortly after and didn’t stay at the party long.”

Cheer on Netflix Review: If You're Not Watching This Show, What Are You Even Doing?

Cheer on Netflix is everything I look for in a show: emotional, compelling, addicting, and so well-made. The six-episode documentary series (from the team behind another favorite, Last Chance U) takes you inside the world of competitive cheerleading at Navarro College, a small junior college in Corsicana, Texas.

Perhaps you’re telling yourself that you aren’t interested in cheerleading—and I’m here to tell you that you’re mistaken. Even if you’ve never tumbled, done a herky, or stood atop a pyramid, this show is utterly fascinating. First off, these young people are incredible athletes of the highest order, and getting to see what they put their bodies through for the sake of their sport is awe-inspiring. (Once you see a single practice, you’ll never question whether it’s a sport again.)

The Navarro squad is preparing for the National Championships, and the school has a storied history of winning under tough-but-kind coach Monica Aldama, who I kind of wish I could hire to make all my important life decisions.

You get to see lots of the whole squad, but the story focuses on a few main members (and Monica). And let me just say they will find a way into your heart almost immediately—like, you will want to drive down to Texas and give them hugs. I devoured the show in a day over the weekend, and I already miss Jerry, La’Darius, Morgan, Lexie, Gabi, and even Sherbs so much. A number of them come from tough backgrounds, and Navarro has offered them a home and a safe space to be themselves, live their truth, and be a part of a family.

Watching Mariah Carey on Billy on the Street Is a Masterclass in Christmas Joy

Mariah Carey celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah on a holiday segment of Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner. She hugged strangers, conversed in Swedish, and performed a minor DIY crafting project.

The video, released online on December 16, is six blissful minutes of the legendary diva canvassing the streets of Manhattan, trying to be a good sport but looking like she’s getting her adult braces tightened. It’s 367 seconds of the Queen of Christmas descending from her throne to connect with her subjects during the darkest days of the year. It’s butterflies and mistletoes and menorahs and a very funny look into the celebrity-industrial complex. Let’s go Lambily, let’s go.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the Mariah Carey Christmas album, which includes the greatest Christmas song of the last 100 years, All I Want for Christmas Is You, which she says in the video she wrote in “fully, maybe an hour and a half.” The song’s power is not to be dismissed–after two and a half decades, it became a number one song literally during the writing of this article.

The 49-year-old—draped in crimson and trimmed in gold, hair like a butterscotch waterfall, contour casting a dramatic shadow like Santa himself leaping out of a fireplace—joined Eichner in his favorite activity: accosting people on the streets of New York with questions and demands.

Most episodes of Billy on the Street, Eichner’s beloved gameshow, take place during daylight. Mariah’s nighttime segment seems both more seasonally whimsical and also makes me wonder if she has a rider that says she won’t appear on camera in direct sunlight. Hopefully they gave her whatever she wanted—it’s clear that a master is at work here. In the course of the short video she: sings “I Have A Little Dreidel” from memory, speaks Swedish then appropriately acknowledges that she is showing off, kindly validates a man who says he was both naughty and nice this year, shakes hands with a puppy, and participates in a group hug.

It is written all over Mariah Carey’s face that she longs to be stretched out before a roaring fire in a remote chalet, drinking Veuve as a manservant drops by with a velvet-lined hutch filled with baby bunnies for her amusement. Her gameness to participate in this activity, which seems to represent everything I imagine she loathes (lack of creative control, unfettered contact with random people, etc) feels loving. This woman who has already given us so much—she’s the female singer with the greatest number of Billboard 100 number-one hits in history, as Billy points out—is still willing to totter around carrying a heart-eyes emoji Christmas ornament, trying to get strangers to kiss.

Mariah Carey’s voice sounds like sparkles and the taste of eggnog, her songs jolt the heart, and her presence as an improviser is deliciously uncomfortable. Like most of the Billy on the Street videos, her on-the-street segment gently reminds us that, like politicians, celebrities need us more than we need them. Part of Billy Eichner’s genius is to expose the mechanisms of that relationship without being mean, and with Mariah, who’s so beloved yet typically aloof, he is especially successful. Fans and celebrities are a weird, symbiotic family of entertainers and the entertained, passing each other on dark streets, trying to have moments of joy. And also, in Mariah’s case, to establish appropriate boundaries. And may it be so, for us all. ‘Tis the season to have balance.
