Here's Why Bachelorette Fans Are Mad at Clare Crawley on Behalf of Contestant Matt James

Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette hasn’t even begun filming yet, but it’s already shaping up to be the most dramatic season ever. (But, like, really.)

Production is on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we’ve already got a bit of feud brewing between Crawley and contestant Matt James, who also just happens to be BFFs with Tyler Cameron. The whole thing’s a bit messy, confusing, and low-key ridiculous, so we’re here to break down what’s got Bachelor Nation so frustrated with next season’s lead.

This all started with a couple of tweets from Crawley on April 25. “If you are doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season… you are in it for the wrong reasons… #dontwasteyourtime,” she wrote. “Respect the opportunity you’ve been given. Respect the rules. Respect me. @BacheloretteABC ❤️”

Fans strongly believe these tweets were about James even though she doesn’t mention him by name. Why? James told E! News that he is very much looking forward to meeting Crawley when the show can start filming. “There’s a very beautiful young lady in Sacramento right now who’s quarantining and who is patiently waiting for production on a show to pick back up and I’ve been waiting as well,” he said. “I’m hoping after everything settles down and everyone is safe that I’ll finally get to meet her. I’m looking forward to it.”

And yes, James is on Cameo—but fans were quick to point out he’s been using these opportunities to promote his charity. “Clare… Clare… in this house we stan Matt James. He is doing interviews to promote his charity, ABC Food Tours which is producing tablets and meals for kids in underprivileged areas. And he said he is looking forward to meeting you so where’s the problem,” one person tweeted.

After Crawley’s tweets, James posted a video message in his Instagram Stories about why he’s on Cameo, according to Us Weekly. “For those of you who may have missed the message earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman, my former teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver, pledged all of our Cameo earnings to the Robin Hood Foundation to fight this fight,” James said.

Even host Chris Harrison weighed in on the drama.

Bachelor Nation appears to be firmly on Team Matt in this situation, and many pointed out that he might be more well known than she is at this point. “Lol I knew who Matt James was before I knew who Clare was,” one fan tweeted. “So it’s pretty funny she thinks he has a following bc of her.” Just as a reminder, Crawley did not actually name names.

Of course, there are some coming to the lead’s defense. “I think it is very clear that Matt is only coming on to try and become the Bachelor,” one fan replied to the backlash. “But to fault Clare for not wanting to risk people coming on for the wrong reasons after the last few seasons we have had seems WILD.”

Clare Crawley has yet to respond to the backlash—but we’re sure this will all be hashed out when the show finally airs…eventually.

Billy Porter Had an Epic Response to People Who Are Mad He's Wearing a Dress on Sesame Street

Billy Porter has been killing it on the red carpet this awards season—turning out look after look and becoming a style icon in the process. Of course, this isn’t anything new if you’ve followed the Pose star’s career. He’s always been a fashion trailblazer. Just last year he wore a custom-made Christian Siriano tuxedo dress to the 2019 Oscars—a dress he’ll wear again on his upcoming appearance on Sesame Street.

Which has some people (read: trolls) in a tizzy. According to Page Six, a petition is being circulated calling for Sesame Street to pull Porter’s episode. “Do you approve of your taxpayer dollars being used to promote the radical LGBTQ agenda?” raged one critic, per Page Six. The petition itself reportedly accuses Sesame Street of trying to “sexualize children using drag queens” (which…doesn’t even make sense).

But Billy Porter isn’t sweating any of the criticism. “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it,” he told Page Six.

He continued, “Like, what about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?” and later added, “The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex…Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine—that is none of your business.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself, TBH. I’m very happy Porter isn’t paying this any mind. He’s too perfect and iconic to be bothered. The man is one trophy away to becoming an EGOT, for crying out loud (the only one missing is an Oscar). Literally if some tries to come for him again he can just cackle and point to his Emmy. I, for one, can’t wait to see him rock this dress again on Sesame Street. Give me all the style inspo.

Don’t Be Mad, but I’m a Feminist Who Decided to Write a Book About Men

I’ve always felt feminism to be like a block party: euphoric, emancipating, jubilant, and open to all. I often fear that many women in my generation think about it instead like a speakeasy: closed, password-protected, and open to the already enlightened.

The narrowing of feminism has presented itself in subtle and not so subtle ways. A few years ago, when I was on a panel and suggested that making the world better for women involved a plan for generating better men, the rhetoric I received was shocking, but familiar. “I don’t care about men,” one of the panelists said. I heard the retort and a round of applause from the audience and sat there dumbfounded. A few months ago, when I suggested that an abortion rights movement that is in peril should remind people that men who get women pregnant also benefit from a women’s right to choose, I was told that “there’s something slightly demeaning about framing women’s fundamental human rights as worthwhile because men have ‘personally benefited’ from them.” When I advised a Western government on a gender equality ministry program and suggested moving a sliver of the resources currently budgeted for girls over to boys to reach them how to be feminists, I was told none of the existing gender equality budget could go to them. For the last five years, when I’ve told people I am working on a book about how we need to develop a new kind of man in order to secure our freedom as women, I was routinely ridiculed. “Yes, because we don’t hear enough about men,” came the sarcastic sneer.

I am all for a feminism that decenters men. I am all for a feminism that puts women’s voices front and center. I am all for a feminism that seeks structural change and expects men to surrender power, but more and more I’m alarmed at a feminism that has no plan for men at all.

It wasn’t always like this for me. I too used to dismiss men’s role in the feminist movement. Men betrayed, harassed, assaulted, and traumatized me before I was even old enough to kiss one. I had to change schools due to violent bullying from the boys in my class. My experience with the opposite sex is far from unique. In fact, it’s shockingly normal and far worse for girls who aren’t white, middle-class, and able-bodied. In the United States, more than one in three women report domestic abuse from a partner in their lifetime. And in an average month, at least 52 women are shot and killed at the hands of an intimate partner. These are men women know. Never mind the men we don’t know.

To put it simply, women have been hurt and harmed by men for centuries, so as they’re enjoying increasing liberation, worrying about their oppressors isn’t on the agenda. It’s not like we don’t still have work to do on our own behalf. Despite major wins, poverty is still so feminized that the gender wealth gap is expected to take more than two centuries to close. Programs that benefit women have had to endure the steepest cuts under the Trump administration. Even in the make-believe world Hollywood creates to distract us from the grim world we live in, women are less likely to be protagonists and speak half as much as men do. Given that women already get a smaller slice of the pie, there is a legitimate concern that dedicating resources to men is shortchanging women.

Prince Harry Is Reportedly Very Mad Over This Specific Meghan Markle Rumor

There are dozens of wild rumors out there about Meghan Markle, but according to a new report from the Daily Express, only one is currently making Prince Harry mad. The British publication reports both the Duke of Sussex and Buckingham Palace are “incensed” at reports Markle is “banned” from wearing jewelry from the royal collection.

Sources tell the Express there’s been a “great deal of anger” over these reports because they are “simply untrue.” “It is worth noting that the queen lent Meghan a tiara for the wedding, gave her earrings for her first royal engagement, and had just agreed to partly fund her new household,” a royal insider said.

Granted, Markle hasn’t worn much royal jewelry lately, but the insider says there’s a perfectly good explanation for that: “The jewelry in question is only usually worn at extremely special functions or state occasions and there simply haven’t been many of those since Meghan became a member of the royal family.”

That being said, the insider who spoke to the Express says there are stipulations in place for when Markle wears royal jewelry, but an outright “ban” is ludicrous. “It is true that Buckingham Palace did not want all the items in the royal collection to be opened up to Meghan at this time,” the source says. “Obviously Kate as the next Princess of Wales and a senior member of the family does have them made available to her. That’s not to say items won’t be loaned to Meghan in the future if situations change.”

Of course, it’s important to take all stories like this with a grain of salt. There’s been a narrative in the press for months now that Markle and Kate Middleton are “feuding”—but royals expert Katie Nicholl shot that down to Glamour last week.

“I think this idea of there being a catfight between the two duchesses has made tantalizing headlines, but I don’t believe that,” she said.

Priyanka Chopra Is Reportedly Mad at Meghan Markle, but I Call B.S.

It was only a matter of time before a story like this came out: Page Six is reporting Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle‘s friendship is “on the rocks.” The reason? Markle didn’t attend Chopra’s wedding to Nick Jonas in December. The Quantico actress is reportedly “crushed” by the Duchess of Sussex’s absence—so much so that she opted not to go to her royal baby shower last week in New York City. Never mind that Chopra had work obligations in Los Angeles keeping her from attending—this source is saying she skipped out to “get back” at Markle. Because that’s what grown people do.

“Their friendship is over unless Meghan apologizes,” a source tells Page Six. “Priyanka is a huge international star with a tremendous social media following. She is probably more famous worldwide than Meghan is. She feels Meghan didn’t respect her, and didn’t respect their friendship.”

I call bullshit on this entire story. Markle and Chopra are two of the most famous women in the world. Their work is hectic and takes them all around the globe. Markle probably had a very good, very legit reason for not attending Chopra’s wedding, and she no-doubt sent over a basket of homemade banana bread as an apology.

Likewise, Chopra’s reason for not being at Markle’s baby shower probably wasn’t malicious. TMZ reports she was bogged down with meetings for a book she’s writing, which sounds about right. Maybe she was combing through scripts to figure out her follow-up to Isn’t It Romantic. Maybe she was so wrapped up in newlywed bliss with Nick Jonas she forgot about Markle’s baby shower. I would believe that. Just look at this photo of them:

This is the kind of love that would make you miss your flight to New York.

And this is the kind of love that says, “I’m so sorry for missing your baby shower. I got distracted listening to my hot 26-year-old husband cover ‘Year 3000’ on the piano”:

Chopra will make it up to Markle by sending her a Rolls Royce or something. (She has one of those, and it’s about time the duchess has one too.)

If you want more proof this beef has no legs, a second source tells Page Six. “There are no issues between the two women. They are friends, and anything you’re being told otherwise is inaccurate and untrue.”

And that, my friends, is most likely the real story. Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle are too fancy and too iconic to be bothered with a silly feud—and, honestly, same.

People Are Mad Adam Levine Was Allowed to Go Shirtless at the Super Bowl

Adam Levine is at the center of a heated debate following Maroon 5’s performance at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. At the end of the band’s set, Levine took his shirt off, which many people are taking issue with given what happened to Janet Jackson on that same stage in 2004.

If you recall, the pop icon’s breast accidentally was exposed after her co-headliner Justin Timberlake tugged too hard on her outfit. The media dubbed the incident “Nipplegate,” and Jackson’s 20+-year career quickly derailed as a result. Clear Channel Communications, which owned Infinity Broadcasting and Viacom (MTV and CBS) at the time, blacklisted all of Jackson’s singles and music videos, drastically hindering her album sales. And the Grammys reportedly banned her from presenting at that year’s ceremony. Meanwhile, Timberlake attended with no drama and even accepted two awards.

Our culture, by and large, now views what happened to Jackson as sexist and unacceptable—#JanetJacksonAppreciationDay trended for a reason—which is why Super Bowl viewers are scratching their heads at Levine’s stunt. Why was he allowed to go shirtless for several minutes, but Jackson almost lost everything for a wardrobe malfunction?

“How does Adam Levine get to intentionally reveal both nipples, his belly, his whole back, underarms, left and right obliques, and every tattoo he has above his waist, but Janet Jackson can’t accidentally show 1 nipple,” one person tweeted. “Adam Levine is celebrated for taking his shirt off during halftime yet Janet Jackson is STILL in the dog house,” wrote another.

“This country should have a serious chat about why Adam Levine’s nipples are, uh, apparently ‘acceptable’ on TV but Janet Jackson was shamed and blacklisted for something she didn’t even do,” tweeted a third person.

There are more reactions where these came from, too. Read just a few of them, below:

Levine hasn’t commented on this controversy yet, but we’ll update this post when and if he does.
