Wearing a Face Mask? These Anti-Fog Sprays and Soaps Will Keep Your Glasses Clear

Life right now feels like a constant series of adjustments. From big things like work and school happening from home and the shutdown of restaurants, bars, and large-scale events to constantly keeping up with the federal and CDC guidelines about who’s allowed to go where and what precautions you need to take when and if you do. It’s a lot, we know.

Cloth face masks and coverings are now a must according to the newest CDC guidelines—at least when you’re in areas where you might not be able to stay six feet away from other people. If you happen to also be a person who wears glasses (or just someone who wants to wear sunglasses outside), you may find yourself with another nagging issue: the lenses keep fogging up. Basically what happens is, the mask directs your hot breath up toward your eyes and the water vapor forms condensation on the cooler lenses (lovely). If you’ve ever walked inside on a cold winter day while bespectacled, you’re probably familiar with this situation.

So what can you do about it?

Wash your lenses with soapy water.

This sounds incredibly simple, but you’d be surprised how many people never wash their glasses. There’s actually scientific evidence from a 2011 study published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons that showed if you wash your lenses with soapy water, shake off the excess moisture, and then let them air-dry, they’ll resist fogging. “Washing the spectacles with soapy water leaves behind a thin surfactant film that reduces this surface tension and causes the water molecules to spread out evenly into a transparent layer,” the study says. Hooray for science!

Attach a tissue to the inside of your mask.

You’re basically trying to create a strip to absorb some of the moisture from your breath before it becomes condensation. Fold a tissue into a thick strip and then attach it to the inside of your mask, positioned so it will hit the bridge of your nose. It’s not foolproof, but it helps.

Use anti-fog spray.

Yes, there are already existing products to help reduce foggy glasses. They work in much the same way as the soapy water trick mentioned above by minimizing surface tension on your lenses. This is probably the most convenient option—if you can find any still in stock. We picked out a few available to shop right now if you’re in the market.

Move your glasses farther down your nose.

Sure, this is a less scientific method—but it can work in a pinch. Slide your glasses down to the tip of your nose, which takes them out of the direct path of your hot breath. Hence, less fogging, though you may have to crane your neck upwards to see. It’s a trade-off.

Create a “nose” inside your mask.

Basically, if you can form your mask to fit more closely around the shape of your face, there’s less chance for the moist air to reach your glasses. If your mask has a wire, pinch it tightly to your nose. If not (or if that’s not enough), then this option involves a little crafting, if you’re so inclined. This tutorial shows you step-by-step how to insert a flexible nose into your mask. Et voila, less fog.

Should We Be Wearing Gloves for Coronavirus Protection? Experts Explain

The protective equipment you should really be focusing on, the experts say, is masks. “These are actually quite critical, and more so than gloves,” He says. “A widespread mask policy will become increasingly important as we try to transition from social distancing to a more normal semblance of society. It will be critical to wear masks when we go out to ensure we are not infecting others if we’re not even aware we’re infected. Wearing masks ensures that we keep essential workers to minimal exposure to ourselves when we go out. Gloves do not really have that same effect.”

If you do buy reusable gloves, are you taking them away from health care workers?

“Demand is unprecedented at this time, as every country is having issues with COVID and thus need PPE all at the same time,” says He. “It’s the classic ‘toilet paper problem,”meaning that when everyone scrambles to buy something at the same time, it runs out. The supply chain—i.e., the system of companies that use materials to make things like gloves and masks—breaks down.

This problem is putting essential workers in danger. “I have heard from nurses all over the country that they have been reduced to one surgical mask per shift, or even worse, per week,” Norton says. “New York City nurses are literally wearing garbage bags because they are out of protective gowns. Nurses in Michigan are out of Tylenol. This is not a joke—this is happening, and the United States needs to do better.” Grocery store workers, delivery people, and others who are on the front lines are also at greater physical risk if they don’t have access to appropriate PPE.

So is there a moral obligation to avoid buying gloves, or to donate any extra gloves that you own? “It depends,” says He. “Nitrile gloves are very useful for health care workers, but also grocery store workers, nursing home members, people who work closely with high-risk populations like homeless shelters or jails and prisons. We can’t forget these places, or COVID will spread. So I do usually advocate for these places to get the disposable gloves.”

If you do buy reusable gloves, the key, He says, is for people to “buy and use what they need.” The worst thing you could do is to hoard PPE.

Okay, but what if I will just feel better if I wear gloves?

If you do choose to wear gloves, there are best practices, according to the CDC guidelines for health care workers (you can also apply these tips to the reusable gloves that He recommends):

  • Gloves should be the very last thing you put on.

  • Gloves should fit snug around the wrist.

  • Take them off if they are torn.

  • Never wash or reuse disposable gloves.

CDC

The CDC’s guidelines for healthcare workers, for properly removing gloves

Generally, you need to treat your gloved hands as you would your ungloved hands—know that every time you touch something with gloved hands, like your cell phone or your car door, you may be using contaminated hands. And of course, you need to wash your hands after using gloves.

I’ve been seeing gloves everywhere…on the ground.

If you do decide to wear gloves, and you take them off before touching another thing to avoid spreading germs, that’s great! If you take them off and throw them directly on the ground in a public space, that’s litter!

Highly populated areas are reporting a huge uptick in street trash in the form of disposable gloves that are being thrown on the ground. If you do that, you’re not helping keep yourself safe—you’re just littering, and potentially endangering sanitation workers.

If essential workers can risk their lives to keep us safe and healthy, we can do the brave, selfless, heroic thing…and throw our trash in the trash can.

Kate Middleton Hasn't Been Wearing Nail Polish for Months, and Nobody's Noticed

The likely reason is that it’s simply a personal preference. Middleton talks often about how much she values her time outside in the country with her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—and as a busy mom, it’s much easier to rebuff a nail than it is to re-polish. Not that we’d expect her to show up in neon or nail art, but the queen reportedly prefers pale shades to adorn female royals’ nails.

So we turned our question over to royal style expert Myka Meier: Could there be any deeper meaning behind the change? “There is no official royal protocol that says what the royal family must wear or even what products they should use,” she tells Glamour. “Each senior royal is trusted to make their style and grooming choices, including products they wish to use. While we have seen the Duchess of Cambridge wearing light pink colored or even clear polish in the past, one of her favorite new looks in recent years has actually been no polish at all! Instead she has simply opted for a buffed nail with a naturally squared low-maintenance shape, which not only goes with everything she wears but looks clean-cut, natural, and gorgeous.”

Another thought? You can’t be publicly criticized for a shade you’re not wearing. We certainly loved when Meghan Markle wore a dark polish shade for the British Fashion Awards in 2018, but there were many who did not—and used it as yet another reason to show their dislike for the Duchess of Sussex online.

So, are bare nails about to be the big new trend for spring 2020 thanks to a royal nod of approval? We shall see.

Billy Porter Had an Epic Response to People Who Are Mad He's Wearing a Dress on Sesame Street

Billy Porter has been killing it on the red carpet this awards season—turning out look after look and becoming a style icon in the process. Of course, this isn’t anything new if you’ve followed the Pose star’s career. He’s always been a fashion trailblazer. Just last year he wore a custom-made Christian Siriano tuxedo dress to the 2019 Oscars—a dress he’ll wear again on his upcoming appearance on Sesame Street.

Which has some people (read: trolls) in a tizzy. According to Page Six, a petition is being circulated calling for Sesame Street to pull Porter’s episode. “Do you approve of your taxpayer dollars being used to promote the radical LGBTQ agenda?” raged one critic, per Page Six. The petition itself reportedly accuses Sesame Street of trying to “sexualize children using drag queens” (which…doesn’t even make sense).

But Billy Porter isn’t sweating any of the criticism. “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it,” he told Page Six.

He continued, “Like, what about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?” and later added, “The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex…Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine—that is none of your business.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself, TBH. I’m very happy Porter isn’t paying this any mind. He’s too perfect and iconic to be bothered. The man is one trophy away to becoming an EGOT, for crying out loud (the only one missing is an Oscar). Literally if some tries to come for him again he can just cackle and point to his Emmy. I, for one, can’t wait to see him rock this dress again on Sesame Street. Give me all the style inspo.

If You’re Not Wearing a Monochromatic Outfit, Don’t Bother Leaving the House

A Bordeaux-colored leather pantsuit is statement-making, and with monochrome, there’s never too much of a good thing: We love the commitment to the theme with the oxblood bag.

You don’t have to keep your colors muted: A bold, bright turquoise adds some splash to a gray day. A flippy skirt and party shoes keep the fun look fun from feeling overly formal.

Playing with proportions (a jacked swiped from a linebacker, the mini-est of skirts, a clutch you could carry a terrier in) adds dimension to a monochrome outfit. If you have a pair of boots for showing off, going monochromatic up top is a sure way to put them in the spotlight.

A cropped suit-style jacket might just be our new favorite thing to wear with high-waisted trousers. (Plus, it’ll keep us warmer in a freezing office.) Apple green is a make-you-look-twice shade that makes the proportions feel fresh and modern.

Meghan Markle Keeps Wearing These Zodiac Necklaces for the Sweetest Reason

Ever since Meghan Markle burst onto the global fashion scene in 2017 when she and Prince Harry went public with their relationship, designers and brands have benefited from the “Markle Sparkle.” They typically see an uptick in not only exposure, but actual sales after the Duchess wears their clothing and accessories.

We’re guessing that will soon be happening to Suetables, the brand behind the sweet zodiac necklaces Markle has been wearing lately. Much like her now-famous “H” necklace, the royal wears them as a tribute to her husband and their son—a Virgo symbol for Harry and a Taurus for Archie. “The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, wearing our ‘Shirley Zodiac’ to represent Prince Harry and a ‘Vanessa Coin Zodiac’ to celebrate baby Archie. We are thrilled she chose to keep her loved ones close to her heart by wearing @suetables ♥️ #suetables #wearcanadaproud,” the brand posted on Instagram.

The brand makes sense as a new favorite for the Duchess of Sussex—given her love of delicate jewelry and sustainability. It’s based in Toronto where she lived for years while filming Suits. “Suetables works with small silver houses in Taxco, Mexico who employ local artisans who are dedicated to conserving techniques which are passed on from generation to generation,” the brand states on its website. “No pieces go wasted—any pieces from ruined hand-stamping, we recycle.”

Bonus: They’re not outrageously expensive. The ‘Shirley’ pendant is $79, while the ‘Vanessa’ charm is $159. Get the exact pieces below, or shop similar styles to add some “Markle Sparkle” to your own wardrobe.
