Watching Mariah Carey on Billy on the Street Is a Masterclass in Christmas Joy

Mariah Carey celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah on a holiday segment of Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner. She hugged strangers, conversed in Swedish, and performed a minor DIY crafting project.

The video, released online on December 16, is six blissful minutes of the legendary diva canvassing the streets of Manhattan, trying to be a good sport but looking like she’s getting her adult braces tightened. It’s 367 seconds of the Queen of Christmas descending from her throne to connect with her subjects during the darkest days of the year. It’s butterflies and mistletoes and menorahs and a very funny look into the celebrity-industrial complex. Let’s go Lambily, let’s go.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the Mariah Carey Christmas album, which includes the greatest Christmas song of the last 100 years, All I Want for Christmas Is You, which she says in the video she wrote in “fully, maybe an hour and a half.” The song’s power is not to be dismissed–after two and a half decades, it became a number one song literally during the writing of this article.

The 49-year-old—draped in crimson and trimmed in gold, hair like a butterscotch waterfall, contour casting a dramatic shadow like Santa himself leaping out of a fireplace—joined Eichner in his favorite activity: accosting people on the streets of New York with questions and demands.

Most episodes of Billy on the Street, Eichner’s beloved gameshow, take place during daylight. Mariah’s nighttime segment seems both more seasonally whimsical and also makes me wonder if she has a rider that says she won’t appear on camera in direct sunlight. Hopefully they gave her whatever she wanted—it’s clear that a master is at work here. In the course of the short video she: sings “I Have A Little Dreidel” from memory, speaks Swedish then appropriately acknowledges that she is showing off, kindly validates a man who says he was both naughty and nice this year, shakes hands with a puppy, and participates in a group hug.

It is written all over Mariah Carey’s face that she longs to be stretched out before a roaring fire in a remote chalet, drinking Veuve as a manservant drops by with a velvet-lined hutch filled with baby bunnies for her amusement. Her gameness to participate in this activity, which seems to represent everything I imagine she loathes (lack of creative control, unfettered contact with random people, etc) feels loving. This woman who has already given us so much—she’s the female singer with the greatest number of Billboard 100 number-one hits in history, as Billy points out—is still willing to totter around carrying a heart-eyes emoji Christmas ornament, trying to get strangers to kiss.

Mariah Carey’s voice sounds like sparkles and the taste of eggnog, her songs jolt the heart, and her presence as an improviser is deliciously uncomfortable. Like most of the Billy on the Street videos, her on-the-street segment gently reminds us that, like politicians, celebrities need us more than we need them. Part of Billy Eichner’s genius is to expose the mechanisms of that relationship without being mean, and with Mariah, who’s so beloved yet typically aloof, he is especially successful. Fans and celebrities are a weird, symbiotic family of entertainers and the entertained, passing each other on dark streets, trying to have moments of joy. And also, in Mariah’s case, to establish appropriate boundaries. And may it be so, for us all. ‘Tis the season to have balance.

Mariah Carey, Superhero, Popped a Bottle of Wine Using Just Her Voice

Mariah Carey is an absolute goddess, and we don’t deserve her. She’s proved this time and time again—whether at a Fourth of July barbecue, crouching near a popcorn maker to find perfect lighting, or during her two New Year’s Eve performances. If you still need convincing, though, look no further than to her video for the #BottleCapChallenge, the internet’s latest viral hashtag in which people post videos of themselves kicking the tops off bottles.

But Carey didn’t kick anything. (She’s a legend, and legends always do things differently.) Instead, she simply belted out her signature whistle tone, and the cap went flying all on its own. Yup! Let me reiterate: goddess. Superhero! Otherworldly! A national treasure!

Okay, so this isn’t technically what happened. Clearly someone fastened a string onto the bottle cap and pulled it the second Carey started singing. Nevertheless, the video is still iconic and by far the most creative #BottleCapChallenge entry. Mariah Carey nailed this one, guys. She won. It’s official.

Watch the magic go down for yourself in the video, below. “Challenge accepted,” Carey wrote.

In a separate tweet she added, “Well, that was fun! my next challenge is trying to get my kids off their iPads.”

Other celebrities have completed the #BottleCapChallenge as well, though their submissions are nowhere near as incredible as Carey’s.

Mariah Carey, Queen of Being Extra, Did the Most to 'Find Her Light' for a FaceTime Call

Whether you’ve pre-coordinated outfits with your pals ahead of a girls’ night out photoshoot or staged a precise coffee/pastry/book shot just so, we’ve all gone the distance for the ‘gram at one time or another. But a look at Mariah Carey‘s recent tweets suggest that the singer may come in first place for Doing the Absolute Most for a photo.

On Friday (July 5), Mimi shared a photo from what looks like a Fourth of July celebration with a popcorn machine. Standard fare for a celebrity barbecue (we suppose) or a neighborhood street fair, until you get a look at how she posed with the object.

Instead of standing next to or in front of the popcorn maker, Carey’s squatting down next to it with her phone held high in the air (and in a bodycon dress and heels—which is something of an athletic feat, in my opinion). Apparently, said popcorn maker had optimal lighting for what looks like a FaceTime call: “Finding my light,” she captioned the picture.

It’s maybe the first time someone has used an old-timey snack machine to hit their best angles. I’m not sure I believe there was no other way for Carey to find her light, but her Lambs thought it was a revolutionary move.

Carey’s Fourth of July festivities weren’t all about MacGyver-ing the perfect light. After sharing her popcorn picture, Carey posted three photos in the same red dress—this time, with her children and only the sun to illuminate her photoshoot. “Dem kids agreed to get off the bouncy house for a minute to take a quick pic with mommy on Fourth of July,” she wrote.

Whether you already have a selfie light on your phone or not, you have to commend Carey for getting creative with her lighting options over the holiday weekend.

Mariah Carey Is Coming Back to Perform on New Year's Eve

After last year’s technically glitchy New Year’s Eve performance, Mariah Carey is coming back to sing for ABC’s famous live television event, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.

Everyone deserves a second chance, after all. Carey is certainly no exception after her mishap and the backlash that followed last year. Nearly everything that could go wrong on live television happened to Carey in her three-song set.

In case you don’t remember, all was nearly well throughout “Auld Lang Syne”. Then things started to glitch as “Emotions” took off: She said mid-song that her monitors weren’t working. Carey, visibly upset, attempted to push through the 1991 hit as she urged the audience to sing along. She ended the set right before the ball dropped with “We Belong Together”, holding the microphone away from her mouth and interrupting the song with cries of “Happy New Year!”

Following the mishap, Carey’s team said she couldn’t hear her cues and alleged that Dick Clark Productions sabotaged her performance for the ratings. Dick Clark Productions eventually admitted to technical errors.

But time apparently heals all wounds.

“We can all agree that last year didn’t go exactly as planned and we are thrilled to move forward together to provide America with an incredible night of music and celebration,” Carey’s team and Dick Clark Productions said in a joint statement to The Associated Press on Saturday. “See you in Times Square!”

Carey also confirmed her return on her Twitter account.

She’ll kick off the new year alongside former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello, Nick Jonas, and country band Sugarland.
