'Frozen 2' Is On Disney Plus Three Months Early to Bring Joy "During This Challenging Time"

Disney has released Frozen 2 early to make life a bit easier during the coronavirus outbreak.

In January, word spread of a new virus known as “SARS-CoV-2” was causing a disease named “coronavirus disease 2019.” The virus quickly jumped from nation to nation, shutting down many aspects of life as we know it along the way. Now, most of the world is being asked to socially isolate from their friends and extended family to stop the spread. And that means spending an awful lot of time at home.

Thankfully, Disney Plus is picking up the entertainment slack. On Saturday, March 15, the company announced plans to stream Frozen 2 a full three months early to bring “families with some fun and joy during this challenging time.”

“Frozen 2 has captivated audiences around the world through its powerful themes of perseverance and the importance of family, messages that are incredibly relevant during this time, and we are pleased to be able to share this heartwarming story early with our Disney+ subscribers to enjoy at home on any device,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek shared in a statement.

According to the announcement, the movie will be available starting today, Sunday, March 15.

And Chapek wasn’t the only one who was excited to share the news.

Actress Kristen Bell, who voices Anna in the film, shared a screenshot of the film on Instagram along with the caption, “Your sisters will be here for you during crazy time! Surprise! #Frozen2 is coming early to #DisneyPlus. Start streaming this Sunday.”

Of course, nothing is really this altruistic. As The Verge noted, executives at Disney Plus likely saw an opportunity to bring on more subscribers as schools shut down and more and more people are working from home. But hey, who cares, as long as we get to enjoy something that brings us joy for a moment, right?

This does, however, also beg the question of what else may be released early due to coronavirus. On Friday, journalist Evan Ross Katz asked Bravo’s Andy Cohen if he’d consider releasing The Real Housewives of New York just a bit early, to which Cohen replied, “It’s on the table, but complicated.”

Elsa and Anna will do for now!

Watching Mariah Carey on Billy on the Street Is a Masterclass in Christmas Joy

Mariah Carey celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah on a holiday segment of Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner. She hugged strangers, conversed in Swedish, and performed a minor DIY crafting project.

The video, released online on December 16, is six blissful minutes of the legendary diva canvassing the streets of Manhattan, trying to be a good sport but looking like she’s getting her adult braces tightened. It’s 367 seconds of the Queen of Christmas descending from her throne to connect with her subjects during the darkest days of the year. It’s butterflies and mistletoes and menorahs and a very funny look into the celebrity-industrial complex. Let’s go Lambily, let’s go.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the Mariah Carey Christmas album, which includes the greatest Christmas song of the last 100 years, All I Want for Christmas Is You, which she says in the video she wrote in “fully, maybe an hour and a half.” The song’s power is not to be dismissed–after two and a half decades, it became a number one song literally during the writing of this article.

The 49-year-old—draped in crimson and trimmed in gold, hair like a butterscotch waterfall, contour casting a dramatic shadow like Santa himself leaping out of a fireplace—joined Eichner in his favorite activity: accosting people on the streets of New York with questions and demands.

Most episodes of Billy on the Street, Eichner’s beloved gameshow, take place during daylight. Mariah’s nighttime segment seems both more seasonally whimsical and also makes me wonder if she has a rider that says she won’t appear on camera in direct sunlight. Hopefully they gave her whatever she wanted—it’s clear that a master is at work here. In the course of the short video she: sings “I Have A Little Dreidel” from memory, speaks Swedish then appropriately acknowledges that she is showing off, kindly validates a man who says he was both naughty and nice this year, shakes hands with a puppy, and participates in a group hug.

It is written all over Mariah Carey’s face that she longs to be stretched out before a roaring fire in a remote chalet, drinking Veuve as a manservant drops by with a velvet-lined hutch filled with baby bunnies for her amusement. Her gameness to participate in this activity, which seems to represent everything I imagine she loathes (lack of creative control, unfettered contact with random people, etc) feels loving. This woman who has already given us so much—she’s the female singer with the greatest number of Billboard 100 number-one hits in history, as Billy points out—is still willing to totter around carrying a heart-eyes emoji Christmas ornament, trying to get strangers to kiss.

Mariah Carey’s voice sounds like sparkles and the taste of eggnog, her songs jolt the heart, and her presence as an improviser is deliciously uncomfortable. Like most of the Billy on the Street videos, her on-the-street segment gently reminds us that, like politicians, celebrities need us more than we need them. Part of Billy Eichner’s genius is to expose the mechanisms of that relationship without being mean, and with Mariah, who’s so beloved yet typically aloof, he is especially successful. Fans and celebrities are a weird, symbiotic family of entertainers and the entertained, passing each other on dark streets, trying to have moments of joy. And also, in Mariah’s case, to establish appropriate boundaries. And may it be so, for us all. ‘Tis the season to have balance.

Watching Sophie Turner and Jonathan Van Ness Meet for the First Time Is Pure Joy

It’s already been well-documented that Sophie Turner had a great night at the 2019 MTV VMAs. She rocked out to Normani (as one always should), got very excited to take a photo with Lizzo, and hijacked her husband’s moon person after the Jonas Brothers win.

She also met Queer Eye‘s Jonathan Van Ness, which looked incredible from the photos, but now we have video evidence that it was epic for both parties. In true JVN fashion, he reacts to seeing Turner with a scream that, indeed, should only be reserved for when the Queen in the North calls out your name and approaches you with open arms.

“I’m so happy for your ending, oh my God,” he says, speaking of Turner’s character Sansa Stark ending up ruling the North on Game of Thrones. “I was so relieved.” Then he appears to whisper in her ear, “It was the only one I could stomach.” (Many fans of the show were less-than-thrilled with the final season, to the point that some drew up a petition to have it remade.)

It’s a true mutual admiration between these two as they tell each other how incredible they think the other is. Van Ness also congratulated Turner on her “gorgeous summer”—which, of course included her wedding to Joe Jonas.

Speaking of, Turner makes sure to call him over to meet JVN too—and the two men bow down to each other. JVN is always such a positive force on Queer Eye, and it’s so lovely to see he’s exactly the same when meeting the super-famous.

Honestly, this whole video is exactly the midweek mood lifter we all needed. I, for one, will be keeping it tucked away for a re-watch the next time I’m having a bad day. A Sophie Turner and Jonathan Van Ness podcast needs to happen immediately.
