All the Hidden Messages in the Hairstyles on 'Stranger Things'

Robin is first introduced to us as Steve’s snarky coworker at Scoops Ahoy inside the Starcourt Mall, and she’s got this cool self-confidence, mixed with a little bit of nerd, that’s instantly endearing. Plus, she’s not afraid to rib Steve about all his “children” friends. But what’s even more of a standout? Her incredibly chic bob. Hindsguard let us in on how she approached introducing this new character into Hawkins.

“We started very, very small, with Matt and Ross (Duffer, the show’s creators) saying she should be tomboy-ish. She should not be too girly or polished,” she says. “They wanted something natural and cute but endearing. I think she has a very endearing personality, and then I met Maya and she is just this bubble of joy. She is so fun.”

Hindsguard gave Hawke a blunt cut with only a very few layers in it, and then she used a big waving iron on it to create some movement and some volume in her roots. “That cut is interesting, because it works in the period and also works right now,” Hindsguard says, who says she really wanted people to be able to relate to Robin.

Poor, poor Joyce: She’s been in the middle of a trauma or recovering from one basically the whole time we’ve known her. But Hindsguard and Ryder opted to have Joyce’s hair a bit longer this season, as a reflection of just how much taking care of things like a haircut isn’t top of mind for her right now.

“That woman has given up,” Hindsguard says. “She’s just shoving her pain off.” She also points out that the whole Byers family is all rocking a very similar cut with all of their bangs, which is a real contrast to Wheeler household where everyone is very “done.” “When we first met her in season one, she pretty right on with the ’80s with a little bit of a mullet feel to it [her hair],” she says. “But now, she doesn’t even realize. She can’t focus on stuff like that because she’s been through so much.” Her thinking? Joyce would trim up the front purely out of necessity so she could see—and not bother so much with the rest.

Here's What 'Stranger Things' Cast Members Predict for Their Characters in Season 4

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Stranger Things season three.

If you’re anything like me, you spent a minimum of eight hours this holiday weekend glued to Stranger Things season three. There was a lot of hype going into the sci-fi series’ third installment, but the action-packed, female-powered, Scoops Ahoy-fueled new season did not disappoint. Naturally, we have one big question on the other side of The Battle of Starcourt: What’s next for our favorite residents of Hawkins, Indiana?

For right now, it’s hard to say. The Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things‘s creators, have said they’d envisioned the series as a four-season arc—meaning there’s one last adventure with El, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Mike ahead. But the actual details—like the storyline and release date—are still up in the air. (The closest thing we have to a confirmation is a hint from producer Shawn Levy, who says season four is “definitely” happening.)

The gate to the Upside-Down may be closed (for now), but we’re holding out hope that there’s still more Stranger Things on the horizon—and the cast seems to agree. Ahead of a (hopeful) fourth season, Glamour asked Cara Buono (Mrs. Wheeler), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson) where they hope their characters head next. Showrunners, I hope you’re listening closely.

Karen Wheeler Realizes Her Potential

Karen Wheeler faced a big choice in season three: Give in to her chemistry with resident bad-guy Billy and pursue an affair, or stay loyal to her marriage and family. In the end, she chose the latter—but Cara Buono told Glamour she hopes her character will get more screen time and more opportunities to branch out from her stifled housewife role. “There’s a lot of potential. And it’s funny because when I meet a lot of young fans, they really want to see more of Mrs. Wheeler, too,” she says.

One option: a fresh career outside of the Wheeler residence. “I always thought that Karen was someone who would have gone to law school and be a public defender to give people a voice who didn’t have a voice… or I thought what would be funny is after everything that happens in Hawkins, because people are moving and real estate has really gone down, she becomes a real estate agent! Like, ‘I know things seem a little unstable here, but now’s a great time to buy!’”

Dyer wouldn’t mind teaming up with her onscreen mom for detective work in future episodes, either. “I want to see more of Karen’s stuff! We need more of that just generally in the world, and that’s just ripe for it.”

Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers Try to Make a Long-Distance Relationship Work

Stranger Things season three closed with a series of heartbreaking goodbyes when the Byers family packed up and left Hawkins for good, including the farewell between longtime-couple Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers. And the actors who play them, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, are as in the dark as we are regarding whether Stranger Things‘s OTP will last into a fourth season.

“I’m genuinely interested to see what they are going to do, because when we were filming the end and saying goodbye, that was the question, like are we actually saying goodbye?” Heaton says.

“We don’t know [what will happen for them], and the past two seasons we’ve basically been filming together constantly, and it’s like, ‘Huh, what’s next season going to be like?’” Dyer says. “We’ve been with these characters for three seasons, and we care about them, so I do think whatever happens between them, I hope it’s given time and space and integrity and reality to what they’re going through. I mean, I’m personally invested and interested in Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship, because again, we’ve been creating these characters for years, but I think there’s a relatability to that.”

Stranger Things' Cara Buono on the Season 3 Scene She Asked To Change

“In that moment you see her partner with their kid and it’s like, ‘Jesus, don’t do it,'” Montgomery says. “And she doesn’t, which I think is really redemptive. Because for Billy, he’s not really going out on that much of a limb. He’s a single guy, a young dude. He’s flirting with her—but for her, there’s so much more at stake.”

Buono says the scene wasn’t originally scripted that way, though. Karen was supposed to walk down the stairs and only see her husband, Ted, sleeping in his chair. But Buono felt that actually could have given her more reason to meet up with someone, so she asked co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer to include Holly in the scene. That way Karen would really have motivation to stay.

Netflix

“There are few things that really spark a strong feeling for me, but it was important,” Buono says of her decision to ask the Duffers to alter the scene. “I immediately said to them, you have to put Holly in there. If not, it might give her pause. But to see Ted with their daughter, it’s like, ‘That’s my family.'” Buono points out that Karen is the head of the household, and the Wheelers are a source of stability in Hawkins. “People have family meals there. It’s safe, it’s together, and she realizes she can’t do this to her family. She realizes it’s not about her. She’s the grownup, and she has to make the grownup decision for her and Billy.”

However, Buono says she would have liked a few more flirtatious scenes with Karen and Billy. “That flirtation would have been fun to do,” she says. “Maybe a scene in a diner…you know, not straight into a hotel room. Like, ‘Let’s have a cheeseburger and flirt a little bit more!’ Just a little more courting.”

That said, Buono says she still see Karen turning Billy down in the end. “It’s a different show if it goes in that direction of Karen having an affair, as fun as it would have been to explore.”

And while it seems Karen and Billy’s storyline has ended—although, it’s not called Stranger Things for nothing—Buono hopes her character will get a chance to evolve in season four. “I always thought Karen was someone who would have gone to law school and be a public defender to give people a voice. Or, after everything that happens in Hawkins—because people are moving away and real estate has gone down—she becomes a realtor. Like, ‘I know things seem a little unstable here, but now’s a great time to buy!'”

'Stranger Things' Season 3 Details: Expect to See More of Dustin and Steve's Friendship

It’s been a busy start to 2018 for the cast of Stranger Things, and they haven’t even started shooting season three yet. From partying at the Golden Globes to dominating the carpet at the SAG Awards, the cast has been celebrating their season two success before they return to Hawkins, Indiana this spring.

They’ve certainly earned the break—once filming begins, it’ll be non-stop work until the show returns in late 2018 or early 2019. “If we could make it [return] faster, then we would,” Executive Producer Shawn Levy explains. “But we’re going to make it well. We’re going to do it right.” The good news is that the Duffer Brothers and Levy have already planned out all of the story lines for season three. “We’re there,” Levy tells us. “It’ll be an eight or nine episode season. The number of episodes will be dictated by the amount of story that excites us. We now know what is going to happen in season three to every character.” Now that the season’s storyline is worked out, they’re in the process of figuring out the specific details of each scene in each episode.

While Levy is hesitant to reveal more beyond that, he will say that Will Byers is in need of a break after last season’s trauma from the aftermath of the Upside Down. “We’re going to give Will a break,” he says. “We’re not going to put Will through hell for a third season in a row. He’ll be dealing with stuff, but he won’t be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play.” Of course, after battling the Shadow Monster one would assume Dustin or Hopper might be next in line to suffer the consequences. “You might assume that,” Levy teases, “but you would probably end up being wrong. We’re [going to be] dealing with forces of evil that are new.”

Still, not everything will completely change heading into season three. After last year’s surprising—but welcome!—friendship between Dustin ([Gaten Matarazzo])(/about/gaten-matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery), Levy says you’ll definitely “get some Steve/Dustin action.” As for Matarazzo, he hopes there will be more light-hearted scenes with Steve and Dustin in season three, though he also wants to see their relationships evolve. “In season two, it was all very cute and there was a funny factor to it because it was unexpected, but now that it is expected, I want to see them connect more and be more familiar with each other,” he says. “I want them to have a connection like they’ve really had a connection for a year—like they’re brothers.” Matarazzo points out that Dustin doesn’t have a brother and his father is gone, so Dustin wants an older male figure in his life to look up to. “He’s never had that, so I feel like Steve is definitely someone in that sense who could be that person to him.”

And just as Dustin’s relationship with Steve will mature, could rebel Billy be the instigator for a more sexually liberated Mrs. Wheeler next season? “There was clearly a connection there,” Levy says. “Karen has some unhappiness that is brewing. I think that makes her vulnerable to all kinds of things in season three.” Perhaps those new “forces of evil” that Levy referred to earlier?

One thing still TBD is the future of Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens, who managed to survive the chaos that engulfed Hawkins Lab at the end of season two. Levy says they’re “not commenting” on Reiser’s possible return, mainly because “I don’t have a clear cut answer for you yet.” In other words, stay tuned.

Millie Bobby Brown's Take on Shaving Her Head for 'Stranger Things' Is Incredibly Empowering

For most of us, a new job might mean a new wardrobe and first-day haircut; however, actors are often signing on for much bigger changes. Case in point: Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Stranger Things‘ Eleven. Back on the first season of the show, she introduced herself to the audience with a totally shaved head—a bold look, especially for a then-12-year-old. As it turns out, the change marked a big moment for her as well: Brown recently shared a video of getting her head shaved at the start of filming with a caption explaining just what it meant to her.

In the clip, we see her looking a little wary at first—and then incredibly excited once she glimpses the final result. It’s clear the excitement stuck: Brown captioned the video with a message about how shaving her head was actually really empowering—an incredibly self-assured stance for a preteen to have after drastically changing what so many people consider to be an integral part of their identity.

“The day I shaved my head was the most empowering moment of my whole life,” she wrote. “The last strand of hair cut off was the moment my whole face was on show and I couldn’t hide behind my hair like I used to. The only image I had in my head about what I could possibly look like is Charlize Theron in Madmax. As I looked at myself and couldn’t see my old self, I realized that now; I have a job to do and that is to inspire other girls that your image or exterior part is not what I think is important. What I find important is caring, loving and inspiring other girls. Thought to share my thoughts during this life changing moment. ?”

She also alluded to this back in July 2016—right after Stranger Things first premiered. When it came to the decision of whether or not to shave her head, she told Glamour.com, “I thought to help and inspire people that it’s OK to have short hair, and it’s cool. Society tells us nowadays that it’s not cool to have short hair [because] boys have short hair, and girls have long hair—and, you know, I thought, ‘Why not be different and not have the blue eyes, the long blond hair?’… I wanted to also show my dedication to this project because I loved the script. I love my character. Hearing that Winona [Ryder] and such a great cast was involved with this, I thought, ‘I have to do it.'”

For women especially, hair is an external signifier that traditionally reflects both social and cultural norms, as well as even more personal parts of our identity. But going without it seemed to prove one thing for Brown: It’s what’s inside Eleven—and all of us—that empowers us the most.

'Stranger Things' Stars Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton Make Their Red Carpet Debut as a Couple

If you watch Stranger Things, then you know all about the dramatic love triangle between Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), and Steve (Joe Keery). It’s one of the biggest narratives on the show—who needs Demogorgons and Dart when you have this trio of beautiful, angsty teens? Of course, Nancy and Steve are the OG couple on the show, but the end of Stranger Things 2 implied that it’s Jonathan who will ultimately end up with her.

And that would be some awesome synergy, seeing as how Heaton and Dyer are also dating in real life. Yes, my friends, there is a Stranger Things romance blossoming off screen, and it’s actually been going on for a while: Rumors of their relationship starting bubbling up in March. When a TMZ reporter asked Dyer if she and Heaton were an item, she said, “Whether people are dating or hanging out, I think that our cast just is cool with each other. I mean, I won’t speak for anybody else but it’s been, you know…We’re all one big family.” OK, that wasn’t exactly a confirmation—but it wasn’t a denial, either.

But confirmation came just a few months later, when photos of them holding hands in Paris starting making the rounds. If that’s not enough evidence for you, though, try this one on for size: Heaton and Dyer attended last night’s Fashion Awards in London and made their red carpet debut as a couple.

Check out the photos, below. Heaton and Dyer are one of the chicest couples in Hollywood, hands down.
