In July 2019, before he left the show, Lovato had posted footage of Johnson on the Bachelorette to her Instagram Stories, writing in the caption, “Mike I accept your rose.” In the video she could reportedly be heard saying, “Swing me, kiss me! Boo boo.” Just a few days later, he was sent home.
Johnson took to Twitter writing, “Jus saying, my future wife though girl you ready for smiles, adventure, comfort, growth, honesty, laughter, me falling using my inhaler and kissing your stretch marks and imperfections. Where u hiding.”
The two then had some major back-and-forths with likes and comments on Instagram and Twitter before allegedly taking it offline for some IRL dates. In September 2019, Johnson spoke out about the budding relationship. “I’m just getting to know Demi,” he told E! “I think she’s absolutely fantastic, and I don’t want no pressure on her, no pressure on me—we’re just trying to get to know each other. That’s all.” Sadly, by October, the relationship was done.
Back to the present, though—maybe Johnson was flirting with LaPlaca with those comments or maybe this is just his personality. Or, a third option: what if this is all just a setup to have her become the next Bachelorette (after Clare Crawley’s season, of course) and for Johnson to re-join the cast? Either way, we’re in.
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: This has been one dramatic season of The Bachelorette. Guys have abruptly left the show, others have been accused of cheating on their girlfriends back home, and one guy repeatedly slut-shamed Hannah Brown. Even Peter Weber—the pilot and early fan favorite—had to face claims that he’d abruptly dumped his former girlfriend for a chance on the show.
He’s striking back at those rumors, though. He spoke exclusively to People magazine and addressed several comments that his former girlfriend, model Calee Lutes, made. Lutes alleged that the two of them were serious and even thinking about moving in together when he dumped her to go on television.
“There was a lot of truth to what she said in her story, but there is also a lot of truth that wasn’t mentioned,” Weber told People. “The show had absolutely nothing to do with me ending that relationship.”
According to Lutes, she and Weber dated for six months and broke up around Christmas of last year. She was looking on his Instagram for clues about why he dumped her when she noticed that a producer from The Bachelorette had started following him.
“He absolutely betrayed me,” she said. “He interviewed for a reality dating show while simultaneously planning a future with me. I trusted him entirely and he pulled the rug out from under me.”
Weber said that the timing and the reasons behind the breakup were different than what Lutes has stated. “I was very serious in trying to progress that relationship and move it forward,” he explained. “And she wasn’t on the same page as me. That being said, I wasn’t going to waste her time or my time. But the casting process and my first interview was months after we broke up.”
To say Hannah Brown has been put through the ringer on The Bachelorette this season would be an understatement. She’s had to deal with several guys who maybe-probably-definitely had girlfriends when they signed on to the show, lame fights between the contestants, and, of course, Luke P.
Things hit a fever pitch for Brown on last night’s Bachelorette episode, when she and Luke had a tension-filled conversation about sex and religion that ended with her flipping him off as he was sent packing. Before he left, Brown said this season’s most-teased quote: “I have had sex, and Jesus still loves me.”
As truly fantastic as that line is, it’s caused slut-shamers to come for Brown on social media. Thankfully, the Alabama beauty queen says she has a “thick skin” to deal with the hate—and everything else The Bachelorette has thrown her way. Below, she opens up about trolls, her season finale, and finally finding clarity (a word she used frequently) with the men.
Glamour: OK, how sick are you of the word clarity?
Hannah Brown: It’s funny because the first thing I said to the guys was, “I want you to be bold,” and it would latch on and they would say it a zillion times. Then it was, “stay in your lane,” and we would hear them say, “stay in your lane.” Then I would say “clarity,” and you’d hear “clarity” a zillion times. It was like I had a theme for every week. It was so funny.
Glamour: You wrote an amazing Instagram post about the shaming you’ve experienced from viewers and how hurtful it was. What’s the response been like since you posted that? Or has it not improved?
Hannah: That post definitely did get a lot of response. Ultimately, I have pretty thick skin. I don’t really let that stuff get to me, but I felt like I had to say something because people are looking at my social and seeing those things. These people don’t know me or the experience, but what I don’t tolerate is hate and shaming for something that I’m not. I refuse to allow my page to be that.
I just felt like it was really important to make sure that I fought hate with love. I think that, yes, it’s gotten a little better, but there’s still people out there that have hate in their heart and are going to have something to say because they have their own issues and have been hurt. They’re hurting and don’t know how to deal with that so they look for outlets, and I’m in a position where I’m an easy target for that. That’s OK, I can handle it. But there’s some people that can’t handle it. I’m in a position that can be a voice for that.
Hannah Brown‘s season of The Bachelorette kicked off last night, and it was a wild time. Within minutes, she sent home a dude because he had a girlfriend back home. One guy called himself “The Box King.” One’s real name is actually, un-ironically John Paul Jones. If this premiere episode is any indication, ABC is about to give us one of the most dramatic seasons of The Bachelorette to date.
My biggest takeaway from last night, though, was how much I loved Hannah. I’ll admit I was skeptical when it was announced she would be the next Bachelorette—as were many fans—but the Alabama pageant queen was authentic, funny, and endearing throughout the whole episode. By the end of the premiere I was shouting “Roll Tide” at the TV, even though I’m not entirely sure what it means. It’s official: I’m a Hannah Brown stan. This is my truth.
And as a new stan, naturally the first thing I did after The Bachelorette premiere was scroll through Brown’s Instagram profile. What I found on this deep-dive is truly iconic. Here are the biggest takeaways:

Well, it’s official: Garrett Yrigoyen and Becca Kufrin are now engaged. Yes, the 29-year-old medical sales rep was the guy who ultimately won Kufrin’s heart on this season of The Bachelorette, but their courtship’s been plagued with controversy. Shortly after The Bachelorette premiered in May, an alumnus of the franchise, Ashley Spivey, posted several screen shots to Twitter claiming Yrigoyen had “liked” bigoted posts on Instagram—including one that accused a school shooting survivor of being a crisis actor. Another post Yrigoyen reportedly double-tapped mocked young boys who wear makeup, and a third made an insensitive comment about liberal women. News of this Instagram activity quickly went viral.
Yrigoyen’s since apologized for his “likes,” but why did he follow those accounts in the first place? (From the screen shots, it appears the posts came from several different accounts, including @the4thamerican and @mericasupplyco.)
“I originally followed that account because I’m a patriotic guy and I love my country and I support everybody in the military,” he tells Glamour.com. “That’s why I initially followed them.” He did not specify which account he’s referring to.
On the After the Final Rose special last night, Yrigoyen apologized for offending people. After, many fans on Twitter voiced their concern that he didn’t denounce the content of the posts he liked, but Yrigoyen tells Glamour.com he understands the criticism. “Oh yeah, once I understood it better, I was as well,” Yrigoyen said when we asked him if he was offended by the posts after he looked at them closely.
“I didn’t realize the effect of a double tap or like on Instagram, so I put out an apology,” Yrigoyen said on After the Final Rose. “I didn’t mean to offend anybody. I apologize for that still. I’m very sorry. I didn’t meant to hurt anybody’s feelings or do anything like that. So, I stand by everything that I posted in my apology.”
The “Men Tell All” special is one of the most anticipated episodes during each The Bachelorette season. After all, the drama comes easy when you put every eliminated contestant in the same room to hash over the season’s gripes before everyone goes on their merry, sponsored Instagram-posting way. This year was a little different, though, because by the time Chris Harrison teased next week’s finale, the biggest controversy surrounding Becca Kufrin’s season was completely unmentioned.
ICYMI, the news out of this season wasn’t Colton’s virginity or Jordan’s Zoolander soundbites; it was the report that contestant Lincoln Adim was convicted of assault. No one expected Adim to be in attendance at Men Tell All—he wasn’t invited—but it was notable that nobody addressed him or the case during the taping of the show. So, we sat down with Chris Harrison and asked him to explain.Read on.
Lincoln’s name never once came up tonight. Considering this was a big story that prompted Warner Bros. to release a statement, why was it avoided at the taping?
Chris Harrison: First of all, Lincoln was not invited and not welcome here. What he did was illegal and against the law, so that is a very easy call. There was no chance he was coming here tonight, no chance I wanted to talk to him or hear his side, because there is no side. What he did was commit a crime. That’s a very easy answer. As far as dealing with it, we wanted [Men Tell All] to remain about Becca, about the guys, and about this journey. And going there…this wasn’t the time or place. There really isn’t much to explain about Lincoln other than he lied, he deceived, he committed a crime, he’s not here, and he’s removed from the show and the franchise.
Warner Bros. said they were looking into how he slipped through the cracks because they do extensive background checks. We haven’t heard anything since. How can the show prevent this from happening again?
Chris: I’ll leave that to the lawyers and Warner Bros., but I will just say it’s very easy for people to go on social media and say it was very easy to discover. [Well,] that’s because you knew what you were looking for. We also know what we’re looking for, and it’s not as simple as everybody thinks it is to find that. It was a bizarre set of circumstances that allowed that to happen, on top of someone [Lincoln] who decided to lie and deceive.

Obviously, Blake and Garrett were not at Men Tell All, but when you sit down with Garrett on After the Final Rose, will you bring up his history of liking bigoted memes on Instagram?
Chris: Possibly. Another thing I want to say is that people need to stop putting Lincoln and Garrett in the same sentence. That’s something that kind of pisses me off. What Garrett did is something you disagree with. That is different than what Lincoln did. Lincoln broke the law. That is a very, very different thing than liking something you don’t agree with on Instagram.
I have no problem with you disagreeing with what Garrett did. I have no problem if it makes you angry, if it makes you sick to your stomach, but just remember it’s something you disagree with. It that wasn’t something that’s against the law, which is what Lincoln did. Just don’t put them in the same sentence. But if Garrett made you sick, that’s fine too. Will we talk about it? Probably. Maybe. I don’t know. It really depends on the situation in the moment. The finale [after show] is live, so a lot of what I’m doing is going on feels, like it was tonight. If it feels like the right time, then we’ll do it.
Sspeaking of the finale, what’s in store?
Chris: Becca’s goodbye [to the runner-up is] easily the most gut-wrenching tearful moment that I have been through. It literally brings her to her knees. You have to watch. Trust me. The exit that you’re going to see is probably in the top five of [most dramatic Bachelor franchise moments ever]. We haven’t even really teased it that much because you don’t have to. When you have the goods and you know what’s coming…just watch. It’s stunning.
So are you saying that the man she says goodbye to is probably going to be the next Bachelor?
Chris: Could be. People are always riding on that wave of enthusiasm. [But then again] everyone’s high on Joe the Grocery Store guy right now. He’s in the mix; great guy. We’ve never had a guy from Buffalo [Jason], very articulate…unlike Joe who doesn’t speak. [Laughs] So, Jason’s in the mix. Obviously number two [Garrett or Blake] might be in the mix. Number one might be in the mix if [he and Becca are] not still together [by then]…you never know. And obviously, you gotta watch Paradise because look who came out of Paradise. Wait and see…
