Coco Gauff Opens Up About How Her Fast Rise to Tennis Fame Led to Depression

Tennis star Coco Gauff just turned 16 last month, but she’s already become a household name in the world of sports and beyond thanks to her upset of Venus Williams, and a deep run into the 4th round, at Wimbledon in 2019. The boost in her profile also made her a must-watch at last year’s US Open where she eventually lost to another young tennis phenom, Naomi Osaka.

The pressure of the sport and the spotlight can be intense even for a grownup, but imagine all of that attention coming to you when you’re barely old enough to drive. Gauff recently opened up about just how difficult it’s been for her in an emotionally candid new post on Behind the Racquet, a platform that allows players to tell their stories in their own words.

“Right before Wimbledon, going back to around 2017/18, I was struggling to figure out if this was really what I wanted. I always had the results so that wasn’t the issue, I just found myself not enjoying what I loved. I realized I needed to start playing for myself and not other people. For about a year I was really depressed,” she writes. “That was the toughest year for me so far. Even though I had, it felt like there weren’t many friends there for me. When you are in that dark mindset you don’t look on the bright side of things too often, which is the hardest part. I don’t think it had much to do with tennis, maybe just about juggling it all. I knew that I wanted to play tennis but didn’t know how I wanted to go about it. It went so far that I was thinking about possibly taking a year off to just focus on life. Choosing not to obviously was the right choice but I was close to not going in that direction.”

“I was just lost. I was confused and overthinking if this was what I wanted or what others did,” she continued. “It took many moments sitting, thinking and crying. I came out of it stronger and knowing myself better than ever. Everyone asks me how I stay calm on court and I think it’s because I accepted who I am after overcoming low points in my life. Now, when I’m on court, I am just really thankful to be out there.”

Billie Eilish Opens Up About Being Body Shamed Over a Bathing Suit Video

Billie Eilish is almost as well known for her baggy, oversized fashion aesthetic as she is for her poignant and soulful (not to mention, Grammy Award-winning) music. Back in 2019, she explained to Vogue Australia that her style is extremely intentional and “gives nobody the opportunity to judge what my body looks like.”

That doesn’t mean the 18-year-old artist is immune to those who think they are allowed to express their opinions about her body. In a new interview with Dazed, Eilish opened up about how she felt when people on the internet criticized her decision to post a video of herself in a bathing suit. This past January, Eilish posted a gallery to her Instagram that included a short clip of the singer rinsing her hair in an outdoor shower and you can see the straps of her suit. Yes, that’s literally all it showed but that was enough to bring out the haters and the body shamers.

“It was trending,” Eilish told the publication. “There were comments like, ‘I don’t like her anymore because as soon as she turns 18 she’s a whore.’ Like, dude. I can’t win. I can-not win.” The singer also recalled a time last year when she was photographed wearing a tank top. “I saw comments like, ‘How dare she talk about not wanting to be sexualized and wear this?!’” she said.

In the interview, Eilish got even more candid, admitting she has had a complicated relationship with her own body image. “There was a point last year where I was naked and I didn’t recognize my body ’cos I hadn’t seen it in a while,” she said. “I would see it sometimes and be like, ‘Whose body is that?’” However, she added that she’s “a bit more OK with it” right now.

Unfortunately, the young musical genius has needed to address the prevalent issue of internet body-shaming multiple times in her relatively short career. During her Where Do We Go? World Tour, the pop star addressed the idea of people judging her—or anyone’s—body at length.

“You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body,” she reportedly said over a video of herself undressing, per Buzzfeed. “Some people hate what I wear. Some people praise it. Some people use it to shame others. Some people use it to shame me. But I feel you watching, always, and nothing I do goes unseen. So while I feel your stares, your disapproval, or your sigh of relief, if I lived by them, I’d never be able to move.”

Like so many of us, Eilish is an ever-evolving person both musically and otherwise. “If I wore a dress to something, I would be hated for it,” she said during her Dazed photoshoot. “People would be like, ‘You’ve changed, how dare you do what you’ve always rebelled against?’ I’m like, ‘I’m not rebelling against anything, really.’ I can’t stress it enough. I’m just wearing what I wanna wear. If there’s a day when I’m like, ‘You know what, I feel comfortable with my belly right now, and I wanna show my belly,’ I should be allowed to do that.”

Amen to that.

Liam Hemsworth Opens Up About How He's Stayed ‘Balanced' the Last Six Months

Liam Hemsworth hasn’t said much about his divorce from Miley Cyrus—which was finalized in January 2020—but he did recently offer some insight into his private life in a new interview with Men’s Health Australia.

No, the Most Dangerous Game actor didn’t mention Cyrus by name, but he did explain how he’s found “balance” over the last sixth months, which presumably included some divorce-related hardships. “This last six months, honestly, for keeping my head level and just staying balanced, I’d say exercise has been big for me,” he told the magazine. When asked if his focus is currently on “rebuilding” in light of the trials of his last decade, he said, “Rebuilding? Yeah, that’s a good way to put it.”

This will probably be the most Liam Hemsworth ever says about the situation. When he and Cyrus confirmed their split in August 2019, he only released one, very general statement about it.

“Hi, all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated, and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” he wrote on Instagram. “This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”

Cyrus, meanwhile, has been a bit more vocal—particularly about the rumors she cheated on Hemsworth. She took to Twitter in August 2019 and immediately shut that down.

“I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring,” she wrote. “I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP. I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

Halsey Opens Up About Feeling ‘Inadequate’ After Experiencing a Miscarriage

Halsey is ready to talk about her miscarriage, an experience she recently described as “demoralizing.”

In a new interview with The Guardian, the 25-year-old pop star said she regrets sharing this part of her personal journey in the past after some now-deleted social media posts were the target of online abuse.

“It’s the most inadequate I’ve ever felt,” she explained. “Here I am achieving this out-of-control life, and I can’t do the one thing I’m biologically put on this earth to do. Then I have to go onstage and be this sex symbol of femininity and empowerment? It is demoralizing.”

In the past, the singer has been open about her struggles with endometriosis—a condition that causes the tissue that normally lines the uterus to grow outside of it and can lead to infertility in up to half of the women with the diagnosis.

During a 2018 episode of The Doctors, Halsey explained her miscarriage happened while she was on tour.

“Before I could really figure out what that meant to me and what that meant for my future, for my career, for my life, for my relationship, the next thing I knew I was on stage miscarrying in the middle of my concert,” she said. “And the sensation of looking a couple hundred teenagers in the face while you’re bleeding through your clothes and still having to do the show, and realizing in that moment that I never want to make that choice ever again of doing what I love or not being able to because of this disease.”

Thankfully, she told The Guardian that her latest prognosis is positive and motherhood is “looking like something that’s gonna happen for me. That’s a miracle.”

In January, while promoting her Manic album, Halsey also told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that she wrote the lyrics to her song “More”—which is about her deep desire to have a baby—after doctors informed her that her treatments and healthier lifestyle have made it possible for her to have a healthy pregnancy.

“It was a moment where I felt like I had leveled up in life. It was this like, ascension into a different kind of womanhood,” she said. “I wrote the lyrics to ‘More’ in like, four minutes or less. It just spilled out of me.”

Demi Lovato Opens Up About What Led to Her 2018 Overdose

Demi Lovato was a guest on Ashley Graham’s Pretty Big Deal podcast on Tuesday, February 18, and opened up about some of what led to her 2018 overdose. The “Anyone” singer specifically talked about her eating disorder recovery and how that played a factor in “everything happening over the past year.”

“When you have certain people around you that are telling you certain things, that you should look a certain way, it makes it harder,” Lovato told Graham, per People. “So I was in that situation—I was just running myself into the ground, and I honestly think that’s kind of what led to everything happening over the past year. It was just me thinking I found recovery when I didn’t and then living this kind of lie, and trying to tell the world that I was happy with myself when I really wasn’t.”

Lovato says she’s trying her best to shake old mindsets about body image—especially when it comes to the album cycle she’s about to begin. “I made a choice going into this next album, okay when I present this, I’m not going to worry about what I look like,” she told Graham. “I’m not going to worry about trying to look a certain way or fit a certain mold or whatever, that’s just not who I am. Someone needs to stand up for people who don’t naturally look that way. Like I had to work my ass off every day at the gym six days a week to maintain that figure, and it’s just like, that led me only one way, and I don’t want to go down that path again. So I’m not willing to destroy my mental health to look a certain way anymore.”

Demi Lovato has been open about her battles with both addiction and an eating disorder. In July 2018 she suffered an overdose and spent two weeks in the hospital before seeking treatment. “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she wrote on Instagram in 2018. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

She’s primarily been using her music, like the song “Anyone,” to talk about what happened two years ago. Slowly but surely, she says she’s getting comfortable revealing more. “I’m grateful that I have this opportunity to sit here and tell a little bit of my story,” Lovato told Zane Lowe from Apple Music in January. “As time goes on, I’m gonna tell more and more about it.”

If you or someone you know is battling an eating disorder, please contact the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) at 1-800-931-2237 or go to NationalEatingDisorders.org.

The Bachelor's Peter Weber Opens Up About That Windmill Sex

The holidays are winding down—but instead of getting depressed about the end of all the festivities, how about getting excited that it’s almost time for The Bachelor to return to the airwaves? Peter Weber, the airline pilot we first met on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette, will have a new group of women vying for his attention and roses starting on January 6 when the new season premieres.

But before all that: In a new interview with People, Weber opened up about his now-famous windmill sex with Brown, who will also appear on The Bachelor this season. “A whole part of my life has just been blown up in the public,” he said. “My private life is my private life is my private life, and I don’t like that it defines me.”

“I understand that it came out,” Weber continued. “And I know people have had fun with it and I guess it’s a good thing that I’ve been laid-back and easygoing about it. But there’s so much more to me than just a windmill. And I’m ready for that to be left in the past.”

Considering that Pilot Pete has signed up for another round on the reality show hoping to find love, we have a feeling his private life might not exactly stay private—but it’s understandable that he doesn’t love that a lot of people associate him only with that moment on that show. He hopes that Bachelor Nation is ready to discuss something else. “Out of respect for hopefully my future wife that I want to find, we just need to move on,” he said.

Based on the trailers for the new season, we’re guessing that won’t be a problem. And Weber says he was definitely vibing with some of the women right away. “You can’t fake chemistry,” he says. “I definitely felt an initial spark right off the bat. There were for sure a couple [women] that I felt really strongly for.”

The Bachelor returns to ABC on January 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
