Ariana Grande Wrote a Version of 'Thank U, Next' Where She Ends Up With Pete Davidson

Ariana Grande dropped Thank U, Next on Friday, and the album’s already a hit. Within minutes of its drop, fans started dissecting all the lyrics—especially on the heartbreaking single “Ghostin’.” These Internet sleuths think it’s about Grande’s complex emotions about Mac Miller’s death while dating Pete Davidson. Then there’s the title track, “Thank U, Next,” which really lays it out there when it comes to her exes.

But Grande has been working so hard on her album—she reportedly turned it around in two weeks—that we haven’t gotten a whole lot of backstory on all of the songs yet. As it turns out, there’s even more to “Thank U, Next” than the lyrics imply: The singer revealed in a recent interview on The Zach Sang Show that she wrote multiple versions of the song, including one where she winds up with Davidson.

Yep, you read that right.

First, a quick refresher on the lyrics—if you don’t have them memorized yet, that is. She name checks each of her exes in the song (which they got to preview before it dropped).

Thought I’d end up with Sean

But he wasn’t a match

Wrote some songs about Ricky

Now I listen and laugh

Even almost got married

And for Pete, I’m so thankful

Wish I could say, “Thank you” to Malcolm

‘Cause he was an angel

Things were in a tricky spot with Davidson when she was writing the song—they were ending their relationship, after all—so she decided to cover her bases. (Smart!) Grande says she wrote alternate lyrics, one of which didn’t name the exes.

“I was also trying to be protective,” she said in the interview. “In my relationship [with Pete] at the time, things were like up and down and on and off, and so I didn’t know what was going to happen and then we got back together, so I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse.”

“There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing—we’re not talking about anything,” she added. “But we all knew that the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with.”

Grande added that she was, understandably, nervous about putting such an intimate song out into the world. “It was a big risk and a very scary thing to do, because it is my life,” she says. “I understand that to a lot of people, I’m not a real person, or it’s easy to just kind of like see me as like, a song or a picture or like, a thing that kind of exists in their head and they know what they know and that’s it. But at the end of the day, these are people and relationships. It’s real shit to me. It is real life and I spent a lot of time with each of those people…it was like scary to put in a song.”

Arianators, you can check out the full interview, below. She goes in-depth about how she made the album—but get some popcorn ready, because it’s about an hour and a half long.

Ariana Grande's Valentine's Day Manicure Is a Total Mood

Fresh off Friday’s release of thank u, next—a standout album featuring 41 minutes of extremely excellent bops that reportedly took just two weeks to produceAriana Grande is also sporting a fresh manicure. Given that Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, it’s only fitting that it’s in line with the romance-themed holiday, as she showed off on Instagram Stories on Friday with some tongue-in-cheek humor. It just might not be in the way you’d totally expect.

Grande’s 2018 was more than a little rough, romantically speaking: a breakup with Mac Miller, followed by a 0-to-100 relationship with SNL comedian Pete Davidson complete with a ring, then Miller’s death—and then a breakup with Davidson. Her time since then has been one of taking a minute for herself, and apparently, the incredible burst of creative productivity that led to her new album. As far as dating, that’s the furthest thing from her mind: As she tweeted on New Year’s in response to a fan asking who she was dating, “spoiler for the rest of this year / probably my life: it’s no one. please refer back to this tweet for future questions. ?”

This spirit runs true in her Valentine’s mani, too—but with Ariana’s dry sense of humor. She posted an Instagram Story on Friday that first showed off her friend Alexa’s neon, heart-shaped, almost French manicure-like tips (we told you they’re coming back). Each one had a little Valentine’s message written on it, like what you usually get on those chalky candy hearts: “Hug me,” “Yum,”—you get it.

“Nice Valentine’s Day nails, Alexa,” Ari says as she pans the camera. “They’re so cute.” Next up is a glimpse of Ariana’s own nails, each of which is a plain baby pink except for her left ring finger, which has a “NAH” painted on it.

Her message is pretty loud and clear (and downright funny): It’s a thank u, next for Valentine’s Day this year.

Here's What Ariana Grande Really Thinks About Pete Davidson and Kate Beckinsale Dating

Earlier this year, rumors started swirling that Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson were dating. It was the most surprising relationship news to happen since, well, Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande last summer. Grande’s kept mum about Davidson and Beckinsale, with a source telling Us Weekly she’s not “bothered” by the relationship at all. “The focus is entirely on the album coming out on Friday, and [she] can’t wait for fans to hear,” they said.

But the “Thank U, Next” singer just broke her silence on Davidson and Beckinsale for real. A TMZ cameraman caught Grande walking in Culver City Thursday night (February 7), and he asked her, straight up, what she thinks about Beckinsale and Davidson dating.

“So cute!” you hear Grande faintly say as she enters a building. Watch the video for yourself, below.

Grande just released her fifth studio album Thank U, Next on Friday, February 8. It’s a fun, danceable record filled with sultry slow-jams and lyrics that may (or may not) be about Davidson. If her interview with TMZ is any indication, there are no hard feelings between the two—but here’s a quick breakdown of all the places Grande might be referencing Davidson on Thank U, Next:

“Needy.” “Lately I’ve been on a rollercoaster / Tryna get a hold of my emotions / But all that I know, is I need you close” — This could be a reference to the media circus that surrounded Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s relationship last summer.

“Ghostin’.” Fans have really latched onto this song and theorize it might be about Grande thinking about her ex-boyfriend, the late Mac Miller, when she was with Davidson. Grande said on Twitter the song centers on “feeling badly for the person you’re with bc you love somebody else,” and the lyrics certainly suggest that. “Oh, I wish he were here instead / No one that living in your head / He just comes to visit me / When I’m dreaming every now and then (And then),” she sings.

“Bloodline.” “Just wanna have a good time, yuh / Ain’t no need to apologize, no / But you gon’ have to let this sh*t go,” Grande sings on this uptempo track. Remember, her relationship with Davidson moved so quickly and, ultimately, led to an engagement. The next step would’ve been marriage, but they pumped the brakes before it reached that point. “Bloodline” could be referring to that situation.

Ariana Grande Explains the Actual Reason She Isn't Performing at the 2019 Grammys

Much to the disappointment of her fans, Ariana Grande is not performing at the 2019 Grammys this weekend despite being on the original lineup. While that’s a bummer—especially because she’s been one of the most prolific artists over the past year—it’s not exactly a bombshell story.

Well, at least, it wasn’t until today, February 7, when Grande took to social media to set the record straight as to why she’s not taking the stage on Sunday. It all started with an interview that Grammys executive producer gave to the Associated Press. “As it turned out when we finally got the point where we thought maybe it would work, she felt it was too late for her to pull something together for sure,” he said. “And it’s too bad. She’s a great artist. And I’d love to get her in the show this year.”

In response to this, Grande tweeted a screenshot of that portion of the story with the caption, “mhmmm here it is ! ‘too late for her to pull something together……'”

She went on to explain her side of how these negotiations went down. “I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. i can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken,” she wrote. “It was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that i decided not to attend. i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.”

“I offered 3 different songs. it’s about collaboration. it’s about feeling supported,” she continued. “It’s about art and honesty. not politics. not doing favors or playing games. it’s just a game y’all.. and i’m sorry but that’s not what music is to me.”

Ironically, Grande says she “passed a Grammy’s bus with my face on it typing those.” Despite the controversy over her performance, she’s “still grateful for the acknowledgement this year.”

Now that she’s set the record straight, we can thankfully all turn our focus to more important Ariana Grande matters—like the release of her new album tomorrow.

Ariana Grande Has Some Thoughts for People Who Say Her Tattoo Is Cultural Appropriation

Ariana Grande took to Twitter this week to write a now deleted thread addressing people who think her new tattoo written in Japanese kanji is cultural appropriation.

If you’re unfamiliar with this story, here’s a quick recap: It all unfolded last week, when Grande posted a picture of some new hand ink she received to commemorate her song “7 Rings.” However, social media users quickly pointed out that while the tattoo intended to say “7 Rings,” it actually read shichirin, or “small Japanese barbecue grill.” Grande took the incident in stride, admitting she left off a symbol because it was too painful to finish. “It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao,” she wrote at the time.

She then attempted to fix the ink but it still didn’t read 100 percent correctly.

For some, this incident was more than just a funny faux pas. Several social media users alleged Grande’s tattoo is a form of cultural appropriation, and a few also said the Japanese writing on her website merchandise was insensitive.

But in a series of now deleted tweets, Grande responded to users who called her out. “I can’t read or write kanji obviously,” she tweeted to a person who urged her to apologize, saying that she has “many a time.” “What do you want me to do? It was done out of love and appreciation. What do you want me to say?”

She continued, “U kno how many people make this mistake and DON’T care just cause they like how it looks? Bruh… I care sooooo much. What would u like me to do or say? Forreal. There is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. My Japanese fans were always excited when I wrote in Japanese or wore Japanese sayings on my clothing. However, all of the merch with Japanese on it was taken down from my site not that anyone cared to notice.”

In a final note before she deleted the tweets, Grande suggested the situation was affecting her anxiety. “I have crippling anxiety lol. I don’t like hurtin ppl,” she wrote. “People on this app really don’t know how to be forgiving or gentle when someone has made an innocent mistake. No one considers feelings other than their own. It’s very pointless. Ion [I don’t] even know why I’m talking ab[out] this anymore.”

This was a much lengthier response than what Ariana Grande gave to TMZ after the website reported she was offered a $1.5 million deal to remove her tattoo. “I’ll give y’all a million to get off my nuts,” she wrote.

Ariana Grande Had the Best Response to Reports of a $1.5 Million Tattoo-Removal Offer

You might have heard that Ariana Grande had a slight ink mishap last week. She wanted to get a tattoo on her palm that said “7 Rings”—the name of her new single—in Japanese kanji. But some of the significance was, uh, lost in translation. The tattoo translated to “shichirin,” which means “small Japanese barbecue grill.” Delicious, but not really what Grande was going for.

The error made news, but Grande was characteristically chill about the whole incident—she even owned up to the mistake in a tweet. “Indeed, I left out ‘つの指’ which should have gone in between,” Grande tweeted. “It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.” (She also confirmed that she really enjoys tiny BBQ grills.)

She then tried to fix it, posting the modified tattoo in her Instagram Stories. But even her second attempt wasn’t quite right: The tattoo now reportedly reads, “Japanese BBQ finger.”

That’s when companies eager for PR are said to have piped up: TMZ reported that a company called LaserAway, which specializes in tattoo removal, offered on Friday to remove the ink in exchange for her appearance in a shoot for the company and some social media shoutouts. “Sources”—take that as you will—told TMZ the deal was worth around $1.5 million.

Her manager, Scooter Braun, told TMZ that he “can’t speak” for Grande because they hadn’t received the letter, but joked he’d be willing to get a tattoo and then have it removed for that chunk of change (same, TBH).

Grande, however, had a much more direct response: She quote-tweeted TMZ’s headline from the story and added her own answer right above it. “i’ll give y’all a million to get off my nuts,” she said.

And that, we think, is the matter settled.
