'Halloween' 2018 Spoilers: This Horror Movie Is a Tribute to Mothers and Daughters

The new Halloween, a direct sequel to the 1978 film, touches and expands on many of the themes of the original. This time, though, the action is less about masked killer Michael Myers and more about the trifecta of Strode women living in Haddonfield: Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), the iconic final girl who survived Myers’ massacre forty years earlier; Laurie’s estranged daughter Karen (Judy Greer), who is as afraid of Laurie as Laurie is of Michael; and Karen’s teen daughter, Allyson (newcomer Andi Matichak).

Caution: Major spoilers about Halloween start here.

Allyson is a character trope horror fans will recognize: She’s a smart, kind, and pretty high schooler with a good head on her shoulders. Obviously, this means all of her more morally compromised friends are about to be murdered. Allyson wants a relationship with her estranged grandmother, Laurie, but Karen does everything she can to keep them apart. Why? Because Laurie never moved on from that tragic Halloween night. She essentially raised Karen in a kill-or-be-killed bootcamp so intense the state took her away at the age of twelve. Now, Laurie lives in a fortress-style compound, shooting at mannequins all day and self-medicating with alcohol. Karen says Laurie projected her own paranoia onto her. Laurie says she was willing to sacrifice being loved by Karen to prepare her for the horrors of the world. I say, inherited trauma much?

Halloween is the story of Allyson’s induction into the long lineage of women who face the cruelty of the world and make it out the other side tougher and wiser.

This is tricky for Allyson; her parents raised her to believe in a world full of love and light, so she doesn’t have a great bullshit detector. She’s constantly disappointed because she trusts the wrong people. Halloween is the story of her induction into the long lineage of women who face the cruelty of the world and make it out the other side tougher and wiser. Karen wants her daughter to believe that Laurie is a monster, because Laurie was a monster to her. But once October 31st comes around, Allison learns who the real bad guys are.

First, a betrayal: Allyson’s boyfriend kisses another girl at the high school dance, then gets defensive about it. Next, a threat: A male friend offers to walk her home from the dance, then tries to kiss her even after she protests. He apologizes, but still whines that he only did it because the hot girls at the dance made him horny and he’s too drunk to know what he’s doing. Sound familiar? As if that wasn’t warning enough to teach Allyson that something is rotten in Haddonfield, that guy is soon killed by Michael. When she stumbles upon the body, Michael sees her see the corpse. The message is clear, and one that women have to learn over and over again: If you get just a little too drunk, if you wander just a little too far, if you are anything less than completely cautious at night, it can all go bad so quickly. Stay sharp.

After this, Allyson is “rescued” by Michael’s doctor—the “new Loomis”—and a cop who’s been working the case. That too ends in chaos, and Allyson is yet again left alone with no protection.

Eventually, the action culminates with a final confrontation between the three women and Michael at Laurie’s compound. The centerpiece of Laurie’s house is a basement bunker, where some revelations are made. Karen finally understands why Laurie raised her the way she did, Allyson understands why Karen hated Laurie, and they all love each other. Oh, and they’re ready to kick some ass.

While Allyson and Karen hide in the bunker, Laurie goes hunting for Michael; they tussle, and Laurie falls out the window. She’s seen lying on the ground, but when Michael looks again she’s disappeared. The moment is a recreation of a famous scene from the original, with Laurie in Michael’s place. The message: She may have become a bit monstrous herself because of Michael, but she also gained a bit of his power.

Michael finds the hidden entrance to the bunker and tries forcing it open. Beneath him, Karen tells Allyson to get back, then takes up the mantle she never wanted: a rifle. She aims it up the steps as Michael breaks through, but he won’t show his face. Karen starts to shake. “Mom! I can’t do it! I’m scared! I’m not strong enough,” she yells. At this, Michael steps into the light. Karen smiles. “Gotcha.” Bang.

The lesson: Daughters can inherit strength and power along with trauma. Michael Myers’ assumption of female fragility is his undoing.

Laurie appears out of the shadows, and the three women trap Michael in the bunker. They light the house on fire and glow like a modern-day Hecate. Woe to all men who cross them. Michael and the compound—the walls Laurie built out of her fear, pain, anger, and desperation—burn to the ground.

This movie takes place on Halloween, but I’d consider watching it on Mother’s Day.

I don’t want to push the metaphor too far and tell you that the house is “the patriarchy” or that the Strode ladies took back the night. Michael is not the personification of gendered violence; he is an indiscriminate killing machine. He was born bad. There is, as Laurie says, a boogieman, and he’s going to get you. Unless…you get your mom to help.

Everyone Allyson trusted disappointed her, betrayed her, or couldn’t save themselves, let alone save her. Except for Karen. All the dads and cops and neighbors and friends in the world couldn’t do what her mother did. The one person who could keep Allyson alive was Karen, and the one person who kept Karen alive was Laurie. That’s it. This is the thesis of Halloween: Not my daughter, you dick.

This movie takes place on Halloween, but I’d consider watching it on Mother’s Day. It’s a tribute to the many ironies of the mother-daughter relationship. Moms are so annoying! They give you all their issues; they’re often critical, smothering, guilt-tripping, and basically screw you up no matter what. But if you’ve got a good one, she won’t let anyone else mess with you at all. There are no answers when it comes to the why or the how of Michael, of evil, of pain. There’s only an answer to the question of what are we going to do about it. And that answer is: fight. And call your mom.

Meghan Markle Hid a Secret Tribute to Prince Harry in Her Wedding Veil

By now, it feels like every tiny detail of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding has been covered. We know the foundation she wore, what the thank-you notes said, and that Harry picked flowers for the wedding bouquet himself. So it’s surprising that a new fact has emerged, one we somehow totally missed until now: There was a secret “something blue” sewn into Meghan’s wedding veil.

In a clip from HBO’s upcoming documentary Queen of the World, which you can see here, the Duchess of Sussex sees her wedding dress and veil for the first time since the royal wedding. “It’s amazing, isn’t it?” she says of the almost 16-and-a-half-foot veil, which was custom made by Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller. “The work that they did here is just so beautiful.”

That’s when Meghan reveals there’s something more to the design. “Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside,” she says. “It was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.” I repeat: Meghan used fabric from the dress she wore on her first date with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, as her something blue.

That wasn’t the only tribute in the veil, either. According to Kensington Palace, Meghan had flowers from all 53 U.K. Commonwealth countries represented in its design.

In a second clip from Queen of the World, she opens up about how much that decision meant to her husband as well as the royal family. “[Harry was] really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together,” she says. “And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and just appreciation for the fact we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play and the work that we’re going to continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.”

“It was good news all around, I think,” she continued. “So I hope people liked it as much as I liked helping to create it.”

See Priyanka Chopra's PDA-Filled Birthday Tribute to Nick Jonas

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have only been together for four months, but they’ve already become one of the most Instagram-friendly celebrity couples out there. The newly engaged duo spent the weekend celebrating Jonas’s 26th birthday and shared multiple photos from the various festivities, culminating with an ultra-sweet selfie, courtesy of Chopra. “Happy birthday baby. ?❤️@nickjonas,” she wrote underneath a shot of her kissing her fiancé on the cheek.

The photo was taken in Arlington, Texas, where Jonas and Chopra were on hand to watch the Dallas Cowboys defeat the New York Giants. It was a fitting grand finale in a jam-packed birthday weekend that was heavy on the sports. On Saturday, Jonas and Chopra attended a baseball game with friends at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Chopra shared a photo of the group in their box suite with the caption, “Birthday hang.”

While Nick’s brother Joe Jonas was on hand for the celebration, Joe’s soon-to-be-wife, Sophie Turner, was nowhere to be seen. The foursome have become fast friends, having been on multiple double dates together, most recently at this month’s U.S. Open. We’re sure Turner has just as much FOMO as we do, especially after learning that Jonas capped off his birthday on Saturday with a mini-concert on Angel Stadium’s field. The concert, which saw Jonas perform hits like “Jealous” and “Lovebug,” was to help raise awareness for Strike Out Slavery, an organization fighting against human trafficking, People reports.

But perhaps the cutest of Nick’s birthday messages came courtesy of his nieces, who wished him a happy birthday in an Instagram video from his sister-in-law, Danielle Jonas. “This is the sweetest thing ever. Video courtesy of my fellow Virgo sister-in-law @daniellejonas my beautiful nieces singing me happy birthday,” Nick wrote.

We definitely can’t compete with that but, anyway, happy birthday, Nick!

Ariana Grande Just Posted a Tribute to Ex-Boyfriend Mac Miller Following His Death

Ariana Grande mourned the death of her ex-boyfriend rapper Mac Miller on Instagram, one day after Miller died of an “apparent overdose,”, per Variety, on Friday. The post features a black-and-white photo of Miller that Grande appears to have taken. (What looks like her shoes can be seen at the bottom of the frame.) Poignantly, she didn’t include a caption.

Grande and Miller ended their relationship in May after nearly two years of dating. Earlier this year, Grande had said she was “grateful to have him” in her life but cited issues with Miller’s sobriety as a contributing factor to their eventual breakup, calling the romance “toxic.”

While most fans paid respect on social media to the late rapper, some seemed to place blame on Grande, as headlines referenced her in news of his death, while others posted articles examining their relationship. In response, Grande shut off her Instagram comments due to the torrent of abuse aimed at her.

In a radio interview in July, Miller spoke out about their relationship: “We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress, and everything else. And then it came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple, you know?”

Alexis Ohanian Posted the Best Tribute to Serena Williams in Honor of Her U.S. Open Return

A year after giving birth to her baby daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., under some terrifying circumstances, Serena Williams is back and taking over the tennis court at the U.S. Open. On Thursday, September 6, she defeated Anastasija Sevastova to move on to the final on Saturday, and no one celebrated harder than her biggest fan, husband Alexis Ohanian. On Friday (September 7) the Reddit cofounder uploaded a touching video tribute to his iconic wife to celebrate her triumphant return.

“She fought for her life, for our child, for recognition, for equal pay, for women’s rights. She never gives up,” he wrote in the caption. “She’s passionate and unrelenting and the most inspiring person I know. I had this made for @serenawilliams last night after her match with some home videos from 1 year ago this week. Help me make sure she sees it! #iloveyouserena.”

The video begins with Williams giving an interview after her match on Thursday before cutting to footage of her in the hospital with her newborn daughter shortly after giving birth. “A year ago, you were not here,” the interviewer says in the voice-over. “What does it mean to return to the final stage a year later?”

“It’s honestly really incredible. A year ago, I was fighting for literally my life at the hospital after I had the baby,” Williams says, as the footage shows her doing exactly that. “So every day I step out on this court, I am so grateful that I have an opportunity to play this sport, you know?” she continues, sounding like she’s tearing up. “So no matter what happens at any match, semis, finals, it feels like I’ve already won.”

Um, I’m not crying—you’re crying.

In other adorable Williams-Ohanian family news, Alexis Olympia recently celebrated her mom’s U.S. Open return by wearing a tiny tutu that matched Williams’s instantly iconic looks on the court. “Did Momma win?” reads the caption on Williams’s Instagram. The cute is just too much to handle.

Meghan McCain Shares Emotional Tribute to Late Father John McCain

John McCain—Republican senator, former POW, and two-time presidential candidate—has died after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He was 81.

“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018,” his office said in a statement. On Thursday, McCain’s family revealed he was discontinuing treatment.

Minutes after the news broke online, the senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, 33, released her own statement on Twitter, writing that she “was with him at his end, as he was with me at my beginning.” She concluded with a C.S. Lewis quote, from the author’s 1956 children’s fantasy novel The Last Battle: “The dream is ended: This is the morning.”

Read her entire statement below:

The View co-host has been open about the hardship of dealing with an ill parent. “I’m not the same person I was when my dad was first diagnosed,” she told Glamour earlier this month. “My father is the sun in my universe … He’s the absolute center.”

In July 2017, McCain revealed that he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer that watchers of American politics know well—the same disease killed Senator Ted Kennedy and Beau Biden, the oldest son of former vice president Joe Biden. Meghan McCain told Glamour she joined her father——publicly nicknamed “The Maverick” at doctor visits, waking up at 5 a.m. for his radiation appointments and had no intention of taking the View gig when it came her way. It was her father who insisted she go for it, saying she’d be “insane to pass it up.”

In Apri 2018, McCain was back in the hospital, and Meghan said doctors warned her it was time to initiate any conversations she needed to have with her father, though she hesitated. “We’ve done that,” she told her dad’s team. “He knows I love him more than anything, and I know he loves me more than anything. There’s nothing else. What’s next?”

Talking to Glamour, Megan also was forthcoming about how she, her father’s only daughter, received no special treatment growing up; the Maverick had been as strict with her as he was with her brothers. Why hadn’t she been given status—a daughter’s reprieve? But his relentlessness, she knows, made her resilient. “I realize now he did it so I could survive this.”
