Ariana Grande Reveals How Mac Miller's Death Led to Her Thank U, Next Album

Ariana Grande has never been the kind of pop star to shy away from being vulnerable. She shares her highs and her lows with her fans regularly on social media and isn’t afraid to cry on stage if she needs to. And she continues her transparency in a new interview with Vogue magazine, where no topic—from Manchester to Pete Davidson—seemed off-limits.

Some of the most heartbreaking moments in the interview come as she discusses the aftermath of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller’s death. (He passed away in September 2018 due to an accidental overdose.) At one point the writer, Rob Haskell, asks Grande “whether it is fair to call [her album] Thank U, Next a response to Miller’s death.” She gets teary and replies, “It’s just hard to hear it so plainly put.”

She says that after Miller’s death, her friends in New York City rallied around her and suggested maybe recording some music. “My friends know how much solace music brings me, so I think it was an all-around, let’s-get-her-there type situation,” she said. “But if I’m completely honest, I don’t remember those months of my life because I was (a) so drunk and (b) so sad. I don’t really remember how it started or how it finished, or how all of a sudden there were 10 songs on the board.”

“I think that this is the first album and also the first year of my life where I’m realizing that I can no longer put off spending time with myself, just as me,” she continued. “I’ve been boo’d up my entire adult life. I’ve always had someone to say goodnight to. So Thank U, Next was this moment of self-realization. It was this scary moment of ‘Wow, you have to face all this stuff now. No more distractions. You have to heal all this shit.’ ”

Grande says her Coachella performance was also emotionally-charged because of the memories of Miller that came with it. “I never thought I’d even go to Coachella,” she said. “I was always a person who never went to festivals and never went out and had fun like that. But the first time I went was to see Malcolm perform, and it was such an incredible experience. I went the second year as well, and I associate…heavily…it was just kind of a mindfuck, processing how much has happened in such a brief period.”

Ariana Grande's New Song Is Probably About Mac Miller, and People Are Emotional

Ariana Grande dropped the second song presumably from her upcoming album, Thank U, Next, on Friday (December 14). Titled “Imagine,” the track is an airy R&B slow jam that places Grande’s out-of-this-world vocals front and center. That’s not surprising, though—we know Grande has pipes. What might surprise fans is the inspiration behind the song. Twitter is convinced the song is an ode to Grande’s ex-boyfriend the late Mac Miller, and the evidence holds up.

For one, there’s the title: “Imagine.” Miller actually had an “Imagine” tattoo on his upper arm, so it’s possible Grande derived inspiration from that. There are also some telling details in the lyrics. “Staying up all night, order me pad thai,” Grande sings at one point in the song. Miller mirrors this in his song “Cinderella” when he raps, “And when you hungry, I can chef you up a stir fry.” (Grande confirmed back in May “Cinderella” was written about her.)

A second parallel occurs later in the song when Grande sings, “I never thought that it would be you.” On “Cinderella,” Miller croons, “You used to tell me all the time I ain’t your type.” Finally, Grande sings in a whistle tone at the 2:45 mark on “Imagine.” She uses a similar tone on her song “The Way,” which she recorded with Miller, at the 3:14 mark.

Fans are clearly in their feels about all of this. Below, just a few reactions.

Grande, for her part, hopes the viral feud between Drake and Kanye West on Twitter right now doesn’t deflect from her music or her friend Miley Cyrus’ new song release. “Guys, i know there are grown men arguing online rn but miley and i dropping our beautiful, new songs tonight so if y’all could please jus behave for just like a few hours so the girls can shine that’d be so sick thank u,” she tweeted last night. Amen.

Here's Why Ariana Grande Didn't Put Mac Miller in Her 'Thank U, Next' Burn Book

Ariana Grande’s music video is full of iconic references, including nods to some of the best rom-coms of the early aughts—but it also paid written homage to her exes, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and Pete Davidson, who each got a page in Ariana’s Mean Girls-inspired Burn Book. But there was something that, at first, seemed quite small—until you picked up on it: Namely, um, where was Mac Miller’s page?

Miller died of an overdose in September, several weeks before Grande and Davidson broke up. Miller and Grande had split up in May after almost two years of dating, so the news understandably hit her hard. Grande still seems to be working through his death and rather than give him a page in her Burn Book, she paid tribute to their relationship in a different way—and we’ve all just caught it now.

As Elle noted on Friday, a fan tweeted on Thanksgiving, expressing her excitement for the upcoming video: “when she flips through the thank u next burn book and pics of her with sean, ricky, pete & mac arrive……………. we had to fucking stan”

Grande’s response revealed that he wasn’t in the book—he was somewhere else in the video: “M ain’t in the book he next to my bed.”

Grande sings Miller’s verse, looking up—”Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, ’cause he was an angel”—and then closes the book, right around the one-minute mark in the video. Behind her on the nightstand are several framed photos are. It seems likely that he’s in one of the photos, though you can’t quite see it.

Check it out for yourself, below:

Ariana Grande Just Shut Down People Who Say She's 'Milking' Mac Miller's Death

Ariana Grande has had a year filled with highs and lows: Following her split with rapper Mac Miller, she began dating, got several tattoos with, and then was quickly engaged to Saturday Night Life cast member Pete Davidson. The two, however, broke up in mid-October shortly after the death of Miller. Grande has intermittently posted about Miller since his passing, a sign she’s thinking of him and working through her grief over his unexpected death.

But Grande being Grande, practically anything she posts on social media makes headlines—and her posts about Miller have been no exception. Most of Grande’s Twitter followers are fans who give their support and love, but there are, of course, a few bad eggs that think it’s appropriate to question whether her posts about Miller are genuine. It even got to the point over Thanksgiving weekend that Grande had to defender herself against them.

On Thanksgiving one user posted “She milkin this shit bruh,” along with a Complex story about a Miller tribute Grande had shared on her Instagram stories that day.

Grande saw this comment—and followed it up with a beautiful response: “i pray you never have to deal with anything like this ever and i’m sending you peace and love,” she wrote.

She then followed it up with a string of tweets urging people not to use Twitter to spread hate. “some of the shit i read on here makes me sick to my stomach. it scares me the way some people think and i don’t like this world a lot of the time. if only we could be more compassionate and gentle with one another. that’d be sick,” she wrote, adding, “like fuck” to emphasize her point.

She also got some love from Halsey: “ari the world could only dream of being as compassionate and gentle as you. and since ur being, as always, so classy and nice, allow me the honor of telling them to shut the fuck up,” the singer wrote.

Grande finished by reminding everyone that however she chooses to grieve is absolutely fine. “everything i feel is valid and safe. everything i do is genuine and honest. there is no right or wrong during this period,” she wrote.

True to Ari form, she signed off by keeping it positive: “sending u all a shit ton of love,” then adding “peace.”

Props to Grande for sending some much-needed positivity back into the world, even when the trolls are trolling.

Ariana Grande Just Posted a Tribute to Ex-Boyfriend Mac Miller Following His Death

Ariana Grande mourned the death of her ex-boyfriend rapper Mac Miller on Instagram, one day after Miller died of an “apparent overdose,”, per Variety, on Friday. The post features a black-and-white photo of Miller that Grande appears to have taken. (What looks like her shoes can be seen at the bottom of the frame.) Poignantly, she didn’t include a caption.

Grande and Miller ended their relationship in May after nearly two years of dating. Earlier this year, Grande had said she was “grateful to have him” in her life but cited issues with Miller’s sobriety as a contributing factor to their eventual breakup, calling the romance “toxic.”

While most fans paid respect on social media to the late rapper, some seemed to place blame on Grande, as headlines referenced her in news of his death, while others posted articles examining their relationship. In response, Grande shut off her Instagram comments due to the torrent of abuse aimed at her.

In a radio interview in July, Miller spoke out about their relationship: “We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress, and everything else. And then it came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple, you know?”

MAC Is Now Offering 60 Shades of Foundation

Not long after Rihanna debuted Fenty Beauty and its whopping assortment of 40 foundation shades, it became clear prioritizing diversity wasn’t just good for shoppers—it was good for business. Shades on both ends of spectrum that catered to skin tones previously ignored flew off shelves, and quickly, competitors followed suit. Dubbed the “Fenty Effect,” in the past year alone, Lush, CoverGirl, Maybelline, Flesh, and Dior, to name just a few, have all launched or expanded their foundation lines to include their own magic number of 40 shades.

Now, not to be outdone, MAC Cosmetics is making a big statement of its own: 60 is the new 40. Starting September 6, the brand will be offering an additional 18 shades of its best-selling Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 foundation, bringing the total of hues up to—you guessed it—60. According to the brand, the expanded range accommodates both more skin tones and undertones.

That’s not all its adding to its roster though. The brand is upping the offerings for its entire Studio Fix line. Along with its long-wear matte foundation, MAC will now carry 53 shades of its Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation, 33 shades of a brand-new 24-Hour Concealer, plus additional shades of its contour palettes, conceal and correct palettes, and Perfecting Powder.

The only downside to having a dizzying amount of options to choose from, is that shade matching naturally becomes more difficult. The brand has thankfully taken this into consideration and is launching a shade finder tool online.

With fashion week just around the corner too, the shade expansion comes at a pivotal time. MAC is one of the biggest makeup sponsors backstage, and as shows become increasingly more diverse, so too does the need for products that are suited for deep skin tones. Your move, RiRi.
