The Bachelor Producers Are Casting a Dating Show for Seniors


The Bachelor, a show in which women over the age of 27 are considered “cougars,” has been accused of having an ageism problem before. Whether or not that’s true, I’d argue that age is one reason why so few final couples last. The show’s premise revolves around a man ostensibly looking for his future wife, and yet the Bachelor so often gives his final rose to a woman in a completely different life stage. (Looking at you, Peter.) The average Bachelor is 31, while the majority of female contestants are in their early to mid 20s. Those women are way more likely to be concerned with building a post-collegiate career and/or growing their Instagram following than settling down with some dude they’ve known six to eight weeks. Or just me?

So it’s surprising—encouraging, even?—that the long-running ABC dating franchise is casting for a new show entirely devoted to seniors looking for a “committed relationship.”

“Are you entering your golden years and looking for romance?” a casting notice on ABC.com reads. “The Producers of The Bachelor are looking for active and outgoing single men and women IN THEIR GOLDEN YEARS for a new exciting dating show!”

It continues, “If you are A SENIOR CITIZEN ready for a committed relationship apply today at: http://seniordatingshow.castingcrane.com.“

You’re reading that correctly: A Bachelor-like dating show for seniors is coming to ABC. Over on Twitter, a Bachelor producer confirmed that they’re only casting seniors 65 years old and up.

Details beyond that are slim, but Bachelor Nation is on board anyway. I’ve never seen so many all-caps hit Twitter before. “I CANNOT WAIT GBYE ALL OTHER BACHELOR FRANCHIZESS,” one Twitter fan wrote. “SENIOR CITIZEN BACHELOR GET ON MY TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!” BachelorBob said.

Some speculated about potential plot lines, while others wondered how they could apply despite the age restriction. “What would the drama be?” one fan asked. “How many husbands someone has had? Who’s the worst bingo player?”

Best of all, though, were the Golden Girls references. You know Blanche would have been first in line to apply.

Obviously we’ll keep you posted as we learn more because this is one we can’t wait to watch.

Ruby Rose Quit Twitter After Getting Bullied About Her Batwoman Casting


Earlier this week, The CW announced that it had cast Ruby Rose as Batwoman in a new television special premiering this December and possibly for a forthcoming series that is currently in development. Because the modern incarnation of the character is an out lesbian, Rose, who identifies as a lesbian, could play the first openly gay superhero to headline an entire TV show. However, the news has also drawn a wave of backlash—and now the intense criticism seems to have driven Rose off of Twitter.

Rose was emotional as she shared the news of her casting on Instagram on Wednesday. Later, she went on The Tonight Show and got a little tearful talking about what the new role means to her in terms of LGBTQ+ representation. “I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is that growing up, watching TV, I never saw someone on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero, you know?” she said.

But shortly after the announcement got around, Twitter skeptics chimed in about the casting. Many noted that the Batwoman character—whose real name is Kate Kane—was actually reintroduced into the DC Comics world as being of Jewish descent, which Rose is not. Others questioned Rose’s acting skills, and some brought up one of Rose’s tweets from 2013 that seemed to out another entertainer. A #RecastBatwoman hashtag started circulating, with people also wondering why the role couldn’t have gone to a lesser-known LGBTQ+ actress in need of an acting break. Critics also accused Rose of not being a lesbian since she also refers to herself as gender-fluid (to be clear: It is 100 percent up to an individual how they define their gender and sexual identities—if they choose to define them at all).

It got to the point where Rose quit Twitter—something people picked up on on Saturday. She’d issued a last tweet on Friday: “Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.” Her Instagram is still active, but the comments have been disabled.

The CW hasn’t said anything about the controversy, but it did post a promo on its Instagram on Wednesday.

There were also plenty of supporters who had Rose’s back and sympathized with her.

Cyber-bullying is never OK, especially when it attacks someone’s identity as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Here’s hoping that Rose is taking the time and space she needs.

Ruby Rose Just Teared Up Talking About Her Batwoman Casting


Earlier this week model and actress Ruby Rose—whom you may know best from her previous roles in Orange Is the New Black or Pitch Perfect 3—made history when she was cast as Batwoman in the CW’s upcoming Batwoman series. The casting is cool on a surface level, but Rose will be playing the first openly gay superhero to headline a television series, adding another layer of significance to the network’s decision. Specifically, she’ll be “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.”

Rose took to Instagram shortly after the announcement and said how “thrilled and honored” she is to have the role and joked that she’ll be an “emotional wreck” for the foreseeable future. She also appeared on The Tonight Show Wednesday night to discuss what it means on a deeper level for her and the LGBTQ community. “It’s a game changer. I found out an hour before I did the premiere for The Meg, and I was so nervous doing the red carpet, that I basically skipped everybody because I kept spontaneously crying. I feel like I’m going to do it now,” she told Jimmy Fallon. “I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is that growing up, watching TV, I never saw someone on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero, you know?”

The actress also believes Batwoman is ushering her into a new phase of her life too. “I’ve always had this saying—well, not me, Oscar Wilde—which is ‘Be yourself because everyone else is taken.’ And the second motto when I came into the industry was ‘Be the person that you needed when you were younger,'” she continued. “So one motto led me to the other, and I kept crying about it.” And now we are too.

Scarlett Johansson Withdraws From "Rub and Tug" After Criticism of Her Casting as a Trans Man


Scarlett Johansson has withdrawn from the film Rub and Tug following widespread criticism of her casting as a transgender man, Dante “Tex” Gill. The actor announced the news on Friday in a statement to Out Magazine:

“In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” she said. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues.”

“According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ characters dropped 40% in 2017 from the previous year, with no representation of trans characters in any major studio release,” she continued. “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film. I believe that all artists should be considered equally and fairly. My production company, These Pictures, actively pursues projects that both entertain and push boundaries. We look forward to working with every community to bring these most poignant and important stories to audiences worldwide.”

Johansson’s words are a significant departure from her previous statement. In the wake of the immense backlash against the news of her casting, she originally shifted attention to other cisgender actors who have portrayed transgender characters. “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” she said simply, via a rep, to Bustle.

Previously, Johansson’s casting was heavily criticized by many, including trans actors Trace Lysette, who stars in Transparent, and Jamie Clayton, who stars in Sense8.

“Oh word?? So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all? Hollywood is so f*cked… I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case. A mess,” Lysette wrote on Twitter. “And not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity,” she added, “but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived… so twisted. I’m so done…”

Clayton chimed in with the same criticism. “Actors who are trans never even get to audition FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN ROLES OF TRANS CHARACTERS,” she tweeted. “THATS THE REAL ISSUE. WE CANT EVEN GET IN THE ROOM. Cast actors WHO ARE TRANS as NON TRANS CHARACTERS. I DARE YOU #RupertSanders @NewRegency #ScarlettJohansson”

Johansson was previously criticized for playing a whitewashed version of a Japanese character in Ghost in the Shell, which was also directed by Rupert Sanders, the director of Rub and Tug. It is unclear who will be replacing her in Rub and Tug, and whether the film will cast a transgender man.

Kim Kardashian Is Holding an Open Casting Call for Her Next KKW Beauty Campaign


So far, Kim Kardashian has basically been the sole marketer, seller, and promoter of her beauty line KKW Beauty. But that’s all about to change. On Tuesday, the company announced via Twitter that it will hold an open casting call for its next beauty campaign. If you’re a woman who’s 18 or older (there’s no maximum age limit) and located in the Los Angeles area, Kim wants to see you. “Calling all faces!” the announcement begins. “We are excited to announce an open casting call in the LA area for several upcoming KKW beauty campaigns.” To apply, all you have to do is send your social media information and a few makeup-free, unretouched images to the email address provided.

Kim recently launched gardenia-scented fragrances and Ultralight Beams highlighters, and has also teased upcoming lipsticks and lipliners. She’s also said that concealers are definitely in the pipeline. So who knows which products Kim plans to show off in these new, crowd-sourced campaigns—the lucky winners could be dipped head-to-toe in some totally new product for a shoot similar to the one she released for her highlighters.

The fact that she explicitly called out that there’s no age cap for the shoot is especially intriguing, given the ongoing conversations happening lately around ageism in the beauty industry. But not everyone is thrilled with the posting. Some fans called out the fact the casting is aimed only at women in the post’s comments. “There would be a lot of men who are in the beauty world who would love to do this,” one user said. “@jamescharles deserved the right to try ok bye,” another commented, referring to James Charles, a YouTube beauty guru, CoverGirl representative, and noted Kardashian stan.

Earlier this year Kim also put out a call to beauty fans to apply to be part of her glam squad via her new reality TV show Glam Masters. But instead of asking for models, Kim’s casting announcement asked for beauty bloggers and makeup artists to apply. And clearly, she found a good batch, because the show dropped a glitzy trailer last week and is set to hit the air on February 28. Perhaps one of the new KKW models will pull double duty as a model for the show?

J.K. Rowling Finally Responds to Criticism About Johnny Depp's Grindelwald Casting


In the spring of 2016, Amber Heard was granted a temporary restraining order against her then husband, Johnny Depp, after accusing him of domestic violence. The story sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, and things only intensified as more details started trickling out. Several months later Heard dropped the charges against Depp, and her domestic violence case was dismissed. This happened in tandem with the finalization of their divorce.

The specifics of their case have never been confirmed, but Depp’s public image took a major hit as a result. Soon after, Harry Potter fans started protesting Depp’s casting as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. (He had a cameo role in the first film, which came out in 2016, and has the titular role in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.)

J.K. Rowling, who wrote the screenplays for both films, remained mum on the controversy for quite some time, but she finally spoke about it on Thursday, December 7, leaving a lengthy message on her personal website.

“When Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald, I thought he’d be wonderful in the role,” she wrote. “However, around the time of filming his cameo in the first movie, stories had appeared in the press that deeply concerned me and everyone most closely involved in the franchise. Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role. As David Yates, long-time Potter director, has already said, we naturally considered the possibility of recasting. I understand why some have been confused and angry about why that didn’t happen.”

Rowling says her inability to “speak openly to fans” about the Depp issue has been “difficult, frustrating, and at times painful.” Be she contends her silence was out of respect for the “agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives.” (She’s presumably referring to Depp and Heard here.)

Rowling noted the people involved with The Crimes of Grindelwald are “genuinely happy” with Depp’s casting. However, she offered this caveat: “I accept that there will be those who are not satisfied with our choice of actor in the title role. However, conscience isn’t governable by committee. Within the fictional world and outside it, we all have to do what we believe to be the right thing.” You can read her full statement here.

The social media reactions to Rowling’s statement have been less than enthusiastic, to say the least. Many fans are upset more action wasn’t taken in this situation; they fear keeping Depp on board is only enabling his reported abuse. Here are just a few of the responses we found:
