Princess Beatrice Will Reportedly Have Her Wedding Reception at Buckingham Palace

The royal family has had a lot going on lately: In addition to all of the drama with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepping down as senior royals, there’s also a big wedding in the works.

Princess Beatrice and her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are scheduled to wed later this year. And now, according to royal sources, Queen Elizabeth has decided to let Princess Beatrice have her reception at Buckingham Palace—something that hasn’t happened since Prince William and Kate Middleton got married there in 2011. (Royal fans will remember that Harry and Meghan wed at Windsor Castle and had a reception at Frogmore House. And Princess Beatrice’s sister, Princess Eugenie, also wed at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in 2018.)

The news comes as Princess Beatrice’s father, Prince Andrew, was suspended from his royal duties because of his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex felon who died in 2019. According to the Daily Mail, Prince Andrew opted not to go to his daughter’s engagement party at the London restaurant Chiltern Firehouse because of the scandal. It’s unclear if Queen Elizabeth offered Buckingham Palace as a reception venue to Princess Beatrice before or after the engagement party, but her friends say she’s excited.

“Bea was delighted and very grateful to accept. It was a really special gesture as it will be the first wedding celebration at Buckingham Palace since William and Catherine’s in 2011,” an insider told the Daily Mail.

There aren’t many other details about what else is in store for Princess Beatrice’s wedding, but with a venue like Buckingham Palace it’s bound to be gorgeous. It will likely also be full of personal touches, which Princess Beatrice has already embraced; Just after she got engaged, she responded to everyone who sent her congratulatory messages with sweet, handwritten cards. They read, “Thank you so much for thinking of us after the engagement.” We’ll have to see what other details she’s planned when she ties the knot later this year.

Camila Cabello Stole a Pencil From Kensington Palace on a Dare

Camila Cabello recently took a trip across the pond for an event at Kensington Palace, hosted by none other than Kate Middleton and Prince William themselves. The singer was there to celebrate the finalists of BBC Radio’s Teen Awards, which shine “a light on some of the UK’s most inspirational teens” according to the royals’ Instagram post.

It all sounds very lovely, but thanks to a new interview Cabello did with BBC Radio’s Greg James, who was also on hand at the event, we know there were some shenanigans going on. “Last time I saw you we were at the palace, don’t tell anyone what my mother and I did,” Cabello says, which of course James proceeds to do. He says they were about to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, when he dared the singer to steal something and suggested a nearby pencil.

“I was like, [do] you triple-doggy dare me?” Cabello said. He did, so she snagged the pencil and stashed it in her mom’s purse. “And then you to one of the palace people called me out on it. You were like, ‘She stole a pencil!'”

At least one person present suggested Cabello shouldn’t take the dare. “My mum was like ‘No, we have to give it back, we have to give back the pencil’ and I was like ‘No, he tripled-doggy-dared me, I have to take the pencil,’ so I still have it. I’m sorry William and I’m sorry Kate,” she said. “I honestly couldn’t sleep last night, I had to get it off my chest.”

News of Cabello’s secret pencil thievery made its way to the royals after BBC Radio tweeted out a clip of the interview and tagged their handle, @KensingtonRoyal. Their response? A simple “?” emoji.

We love cheeky royals with a sense of humor, but now we really need Cabello to share a photo of that pencil.

The Palace Just Released Adorable New Photos of Prince George for His Sixth Birthday

Prince George, the third in line to the British throne, turns 6 tomorrow—and to mark the occasion, Kensington Palace has released new portraits of the little princeling. The trio of pics first feature George smiling in an English soccer jersey; in the second, he’s adorably rumpled in a polo shirt; and in the third, he’s laughing delightedly in full-on kid mode.

The portraits were once again taken by his mother, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, who’s frequently behind the lens for the adorable pics of the junior Cambridges the palace releases. Taken by Middleton or not, annual birthday portraits of the royal children are something of a thing: Kensington Palace also shared new photos in May of his sister Princess Charlotte, photographed by Middleton for her fourth birthday, as well as portraits of George for his fifth birthday last year.

As for what Prince George himself will be doing to celebrate, there are conflicting reports. The Sun reported on Sunday (July 21), per an anonymous source, that little George specifically asked to keep it low-key with a down-to-earth family gathering, likely taking place at Anmer Hall in Norfolk. (George will be spending the majority of his summer break from school there.) The source also says that while the almost-6-year-old George has made friends at school in London and that there’s “talk” of a birthday gathering with them, quite a few of them will be off on summer vacations of their own, so it’s difficult to get everyone together for a celebration.

However, the The Sun also reported last Thursday (July 18) that it’s possible the prince might have jetted off to Mustique once again for his birthday. The Cambridges are reportedly going there once again with dates that could include George’s birthday tomorrow—and there’s precedent: It’s where they went for his fifth birthday last year. We’ll have to wait and see which of these extremely different plans Prince George opted for.

Although his birthday isn’t until tomorrow, he might already have had a few early birthday presents come his way: The Sun also reports that Queen Elizabeth II, his grandmother, leaves little presents at the foot of his bed whenever he stays with her. Adorable, right? Happy sixth birthday, Prince George!

Meghan Markle Is in Labor, Buckingham Palace Confirms

It’s happening, people: Meghan Markle is in labor. Buckingham Palace confirmed the news on Monday, May 6. “The Duchess went into labour in the early hours of this morning. The Duke of Sussex was by Her Royal Highnesses’ side. An announcement will be made soon,” the palace wrote in a statement.

In October, news broke that Markle and Prince Harry were expecting their first child, and a few months later we learned her expected due date was in late April/early May. The speculation about when Markle would give birth has been wild, especially these last few weeks, so Buckingham Palace released a rare statement saying it would announce when she was in labor. It appears the palace stayed true to its word.

This story is breaking and developing. Come back here for all your Meghan Markle updates.

Buckingham Palace Just Issued a Rare Statement About Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Baby

It’s almost time for Baby Sussex, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, to finally make his or her debut. And at last we have a new statement from Buckingham Palace about plans surrounding the royal baby’s arrival—well, sort of.

The palaces (first Kensington, now Buckingham after Prince Harry and Markle’s split to establish their own household) have remained basically silent since the pregnancy was first announced in October 2018. “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” KP posted to both Twitter and Instagram at the time. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Now, the latest announcement continues to prove Prince Harry and Markle are doing this royal baby thing their way—and I’m so glad they are. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby,” the statement from Buckingham Palace reads. “Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”

This is as sure a sign as we’ve seen that Markle won’t be standing outside a hospital for a photo call mere hours after giving birth, like her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. (Reporters do expect to be informed when the duchess is in labor.) As a royals fan, am I low-key sad we won’t immediately get a photo of Baby Sussex? Sure. As a woman, though, I think it’s fantastic Markle (and Prince Harry) are doing what’s right for them and not what’s expected (or wanted) from the world. This is their family and their baby, after all.

Of course, Baby Sussex will be seventh in line for the throne, which puts Prince Harry and Markle in a different position than Prince William and Middleton were in upon the birth of their children, as noted by royals reporter Chris Ship. (Prince George is third in line behind his father and Prince Charles, with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis following behind him.)

Ship also tweeted, “Perhaps the biggest question is this: Why should we expect any woman, royal or otherwise, to stand in front of a bank of cameras just hours—or even days—after she has given birth? You can see how Meghan looked at that prospect and thought, ‘thanks but no thanks’ …” Reactions to this announcement have been generally supportive across social media:

Whenever we see that first photo of the royal baby, I’ll be thrilled—and all the more so knowing it’s the way Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted it to happen.

Meghan Markle Is Always Breaking Royal Tradition With Her Fashion—but She’s Upset the Palace Only Once

When it comes to her style, Meghan Markle has a habit of breaking with royal traditions. Even as a duchess, she loves her dark nail polish, collarbone-bearing bateau necklines, and pantsuits—precedents be damned. Naturally, the media goes bananas every time she seems to go against “protocol,” whether it’s with her outfits or with her email schedule. Inside the palace, though, the narrative is totally different.

“You read all the time about Meghan breaking protocol by wearing dark nail polish, Meghan breaking protocol by wearing an off-the-shoulder dress, breaking protocol by wearing black or by not wearing tights. She’s not breaking royal protocol. There is no book of royal etiquette,” royals expert Katie Nicholl tells Glamour. “She’s just doing things differently. I don’t think that is causing huge problems at the palace—if Meghan steps out wearing dark nail polish, I don’t think it’s upsetting anyone.”

According to Nicholl, there was one instance when Markle’s wardrobe may have ruffled Kensington Palace’s feathers. And it had more to about what she didn’t wear.

“I think possibly eyebrows were raised when she didn’t wear a hat on her first official engagement with the queen, and I do think that was a mistake,” she says. “But I think, other than that, people get their knickers in a twist unnecessarily so.”

You’ll recall that last June, shortly after her wedding, the newly appointed Duchess of Sussex made a joint appearance with Queen Elizabeth II in Cheshire, England. Markle wore a custom Givenchy Haute Couture dress, Sarah Flint heels, and earrings gifted to her by her new grandmother-in-law. No hat, though.

Markle’s lack of headwear did spark some headlines at the time. According to the Daily Mail, royal aides actually informed the duchess that the queen was planning to wear a green hat in honor of those who died in the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire—which meant, more or less, that she should’ve followed suit. “I don’t think the duchess fully understood,” a senior figure close to the queen told biographer Robert Jobson for his 2018 book Charles at Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes and Dreams. “This was not a request. They are for others to make, not the queen.”

That being said, Nicholl also tells us the queen and Markle have a great relationship, so any of this “hat drama” from last summer is obviously squashed.

“She likes Meghan,” Nicholl says. “She’s very impressed with her work ethic. I’m told she was surprised and impressed Meghan carried out that tour of Morocco when she was so heavily pregnant. The queen is arguably the hardest-working member in the royal family, and I think she likes what she sees in Meghan.”
