The Name of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's New Nonprofit Organization Has a Sweet Archie Reference


Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have finally revealed the name of their new nonprofit organization—and it’s a sweet nod to their son, Archie Harrison.

The name, Archewell, came to light after The Telegraph first got a hold of paperwork filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in March. The Sussexes apparently hoped to keep the name secret until a more formal launch announcement, but the paperwork made the name part of the public domain. As a result, Markle and (Prince) Harry offered a statement to explain the meaning behind Archewell.

“Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic, but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,” they said in a statement, also obtained by royals reporter Omid Scobie, who corresponds for Harper’s Bazaar. “Before @SussexRoyal, came the idea of ‘Arche’—the Greek word meaning ‘source of action.’ We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name.”

“To do something of meaning, to do something that matters,” they continued. “‘Archewell’ is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.”

The couple’s trademark application for “Archewell” is sweeping and includes movies, podcasts, clothing, charitable services, lectures, retreats, and online seminars. “The list of trademarking categories is extensive for protection purposes only,” a source told Harper’s Bazaar. It’s not abnormal for such applications to make sure all bases are covered. According to Bazaar‘s sources, there are no plans at the moment to launch a new lifestyle website or support groups, which are also covered in the trademark documents.

We will surely learn more about Meghan Markle and (Prince) Harry’s plans when they officially kick off Archewell’s work. “We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right,” they said.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Son Archie Reportedly ‘Loves Being Outside in Nature’


In tough times, you know what never fails to lighten the mood? Baby updates—and baby Archie updates, in particular.

Presumably, the little guy is hunkered down with his parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in Canada as the world waits out the coronavirus pandemic. (Harry announced on March 19 that the Invictus Games scheduled for May at The Hague have been postponed until 2021).

Hopefully, he’s still getting lots of outdoor time, as a source tells Us Weekly that’s one of his favorite things. He “loves being outside in nature,” the source said, adding, “Harry’s happy he’s getting to spend quality time with his family.”

“Meghan takes a walk with Archie every single day through the woods,” their source previously told the magazine. “She either pushes him in a stroller through the paved trails through the public woods by their home or straps him on and walks the more rustic routes. The walks usually last around an hour or two, but she takes them daily.”

Honestly, that sounds lovely—it’s no wonder little Archie’s a fan.

The Sussexes have been living in Vancouver Island, Canada since the holidays where they were spotted on a hike by another couple. Markle even took a photo of the pair. “We noticed a group was standing nearby and they had two dogs, one of which was approaching us,” Asymina Kantorowicz said of the royal encounter. “She starts asking if we want her to take a photo for us. We said sure. I didn’t see who she was at that time.” When she realized who it was, she said she froze. “I actually couldn’t believe who it was. Then I looked over to the side, and that’s when I realized Prince Harry was standing there,” she said. “I kept looking back and forth like, ‘Is this actually happening?’”

Everything We Know About Megan Markle and Prince Harry's Royal Departure


As Meghan Markle and Prince Harry prepare to step back from royal duties, there’s been a lot of speculation about what exactly this is going to look like. They’re already in Vancouver, where they’ll mostly be based (although they’ll still be coming back to the U.K. often), and they’re also taking on work outside of the royal family—Prince Harry’s already spoken at a J.P. Morgan event. The latest details, from Friday, February 21, were that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would no longer be able to use the terms “royal” and “Sussex royal” going forward.

Now, we’re getting the rest straight from the couple themselves: The Sussex Royal website posted the complete game plan for Megan and Harry’s departure on Friday. “We had hoped to be allowed to share these details with you sooner (to mitigate any confusion and subsequent misreporting), but the facts below should help provide some clarification around this transition and the steps for the future,” the website explains.

And wow, it covers a lot. Some of it we knew already (like that they’ll no longer be able to use public funding and will be able to make their own money), but it’s good to have it all laid out. It’s worth keeping in mind that this whole thing is a trial period—the guidelines Meg, Harry, and the royal family established will be revisited next year to make sure it’s working out for everyone.

Here’s a few more details:

  • They’re no longer allowed to “undertake representative duties” on the queen’s behalf. But they get to keep their charitable patronages, which include the Invictus Games that Harry founded, Rhino Conservation Botswana, and quite a few rugby organizations.
  • They get to technically keep their formal HRH Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles—but they’re not allowed to actively use them.
  • Prince Harry remains sixth in line to the throne.
  • They’ll keep a security detail (sadly due to a “shared threat and risk level” that’s been documented over the past couple of years).
  • Harry gets to keep his military rank of Major and honorary ranks of Lieutenant Commander and Squadron Leader, but his “official military appointments” won’t be used for the year-long review period—nor is he allowed to “perform any official duties associated with these roles.” It’s cool if he supports the military in a non-official capacity, though, like through his work with the Invictus Games.
  • Harry and Megan’s Institutional Office, which coordinated their royal activities, is getting shut down because it’s primarily funded by Prince Charles. “Over the last month and a half, The Duke and Duchess have remained actively involved in this process, which has understandably been saddening for The Duke and Duchess and their loyal staff, given the closeness of Their Royal Highnesses and their dedicated team.”

In other news, they’re also not starting a “foundation” (quotes theirs) but they are creating a nonprofit organization. Details on this are still very TBD, but it seems they’re doing this on top of their other charitable work—so they’re definitely staying busy.

And yep, you can expect a social media and website rebranding to coincide with their Spring 2020 departure now that using the R-word is out of the question—RIP @SussexRoyal.

Prince Harry's Close Friend Explains Why He and Meghan Markle Stepped Down


Hopefully Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and baby Archie are settling into their new North American life nicely after stepping down as senior members of the royal family. While we still don’t know exactly what their post-palace life will look like—Markle is reportedly looking for a new agent or manager—we are getting new insight into all that led to their big decision.

The prince’s longtime friend, polo star Nacho Figueras, spoke out about Harry in a new ABC special, Royal Divide: Harry, Meghan and The Crown. He offered more insight as to why the duke and duchess stepped down as senior royals. “I spoke to Harry a few days ago,” he said. “He has suffered a lot from all of the things that have happened to him. He wants to live a normal life, as normal as his life is going to be, right? Because when you have a thousand paparazzi outside your house in Canada waiting to get a picture of your son that’s not very normal.”

Figueras hinted at the struggles Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, had with the press—including their possible culpability in the Paris car accident that took her life. “He’s protecting his family, he’s protecting his wife and his child,” he said. “He was a son of someone that has suffered the attack from the press firsthand, and it’s undeniable, and he doesn’t want for that to happen to his family.”

That certainly tracks with what we heard from Prince Harry himself in a speech he gave before leaving England to reunite with Markle and Archie in Canada. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges,” he said. “I’ve accepted this knowing it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am, but I hope it helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”

It’s been quite the year for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. They welcomed their first child, Archie, went on a royal tour of southern Africa, launched a battle with the tabloids, and, oh yeah, casually met Beyoncé. Truthfully, it was all just in a year’s work for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are currently taking a well-deserved break out of the spotlight for the holidays.

While Meghan and Harry are kicking back, we figured it’d be fun to go through their cutest moments of the year—both as a couple and new parents. We already know parenthood has profoundly impacted the both of them. “It’s magic. It’s pretty amazing. I have the best two guys in the world, so I’m really happy,” Markle said shortly after giving birth, while Prince Harry added, “It’s been great. Parenting is amazing.” But they’ve also shared some sweet moments just the two of them. Below, the 10 times Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made us swoon the most.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Official Instagram Blocks Tagged Posts


Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are nothing if not consistent in that they are very clearly going to do this royal thing their way. From being more open than other members of the family about their struggles with the media to their insistence on as much privacy as possible for baby Archie, the Sussexes aren’t conforming to the norms that came before them. “I think the grass is always greener. You have no idea. It’s really hard to understand what it’s like. I know what it seems like it should be, but it’s a very different thing,” Markle said in the documentary of their trip to Africa earlier this year.

And ever since the couple set up their own Instagram account—separate from Prince William and Kate Middleton—they have also established their own social media vibe. Sometimes it’s as simple as using emojis or as headline making as unfollowing other royal accounts in order to shine a light on organizations they care about.

In another move that’s a departure from the other official royal accounts like @TheRoyalFamily and @KensingtonRoyal, royal fans and media outlets noticed that the Sussexes have blocked their followers from seeing tagged posts. (If you go to their tagged section, you see “no posts yet.”) Of course, we don’t know exactly why they’ve made this decision, but it’s not hard to deduce that it’s another way to protect their privacy. Also, as any royal fan knows, there have been some corners of the internet where racist language and imagery have been used to talk about Markle and perhaps limiting access to that narrative is another reason.

While the Cambridges’ account, as well as the queen’s, allows for tagged posts to be viewed, both sections look pretty curated when you click on them. For example, on Middleton and Prince William’s Instagram, the majority of the tagged posts are actually just…posts from Kensington Royal.

So, basically, this is not that big of a deal and their’s no need to criticize their decision. Keep doing you, Sussexes.
