The Dixie Chicks Just Released Their First Song in 13 Years

The Dixie Chicks are back to take their rightful place as queens of country rock. With “Gaslighter,” the first single off their upcoming album of the same name, the trio isn’t easing their way back. They’re coming in swinging.

Back in 2003, the industry basically shunned Martie Erwin Maguire, Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines after Maines publicly criticized President George W. Bush during a concert in London (she said she was “ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas”). This was not the first time that year they’d drawn the ire of their own peers and audience. A few months prior, they faced major backlash for posing nude on the now-iconic cover of Entertainment Weekly.

The band teased “Gaslighter” with an Instagram of the word’s definition: “a psychological manipulator who seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a group, making them question their own memory, perception or sanity.” Sound familiar?

If you think we’re over-playing the cause of their shortened career (until recent collabs with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, of course) or that their political history didn’t have a major impact on the industry, just listen to what Swift had to say about why she hid her own political opinions for years.

“I come from country music. The number one thing they absolutely drill into you as a country artist, and you can ask any other country artist this, is ‘Don’t be like the Dixie Chicks!’” Swift told The Guardian. “I watched country music snuff that candle out. The most amazing group we had, just because they talked about politics. And they were getting death threats. They were made such an example that basically every country artist that came after that, every label tells you, ‘Just do not get involved, no matter what.’”

That story got a happy ending, at least. Taylor Swift started to speak out (check out her documentary Miss Americana for more on that), and the Dixie Chicks were featured on the Lover song “Soon You’ll Get Better.” Now, it’s time for the Dixie Chicks to stand on their own. With “Gaslighter,” the band is making their perfectly harmonized voices heard once again, and nobody is going to stop them. Watch the full video, below:

Lady Gaga Just Released Her New Song, ‘Stupid Love,’ and It's Incredible

Lady Gaga made her triumphant return to pop music on midnight Friday (February 28) with “Stupid Love,” her first solo single in nearly three years. And, my friends, it was well worth the wait.

The track is classic Gaga: big, bright, and booming, with eighties-style electronic production and an anthemic chorus. It’s a welcome return to form for the singer, whose last pop record, Joanne, was more stripped-down and acoustic than the shiny electro-dance of albums past. “Stupid Love” finds Gaga squarely back in club territory—it’s a song tailor-made for sweaty sing-alongs underneath a shimmery disco ball.

It’s also unlike anything on top 40 radio right now. Save for Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now,” the top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 is quite moody and downtempo—not a sugary bop in sight. If “Stupid Love” impacts radio (which fingers crossed it will), it could bring BPM and bombast back into pop. And who doesn’t need that right now?

The music video for “Stupid Love” is equally as colorful, starring Gaga as an alien princess of sorts who’s determined to bring love and light to her conflicted world. Watch the video (and hear the song) for yourself, below:

Gaga teased the video for “Stupid Love” earlier in the day on February 27. Again, the imagery—eccentric, over-the-top, and avant-garde—feels like classic Gaga.

The single art is equally as dynamic:

“Stupid Love” has had quite the journey. In January, a demo of the track leaked in full and quickly went viral. Fans loved it, and it was, confusingly, prematurely played in nightclubs, sporting events, and performed by drag queens. Gaga addressed the leak with a cheeky tweet essentially asking her Little Monsters to be patient:

But the wait for new music is over. Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album is on its way, though details and a release date are unknown at this time. Thank goodness “Stupid Love” is a supremely delicious jam that will keep us satiated for a while.

Taylor Swift Just Released the Music Video for ‘The Man’

Taylor Swift dropped the music video for her song “The Man” off of Lover bright and early Thursday morning (February 27), after teasing it with a clip that showed what appeared to be a man looking out an office window.

Many fans surmised that the man was actually Swift—and they were right. Throughout the video, she portrays a male version of herself, Tyler Swift, a character walking through life with all the benefits afforded to men.

YouTube

The song is one of Swift’s most overtly feminist hits, with lyrics that dissect the double standards women face in the world—and in the music industry. Take the opening lines, for example: “I would be complex / I would be cool / They’d say I played the field before / I found someone to commit to / And that would be okay / For me to do / Every conquest I had made / Would make me more of a boss to you.”

Swift also directed the video, but this isn’t the first time she’s taken charge behind the camera. She co-directed the video for “Lover” and went solo for her holiday release, “Christmas Tree Farm.” It’s a pretty straightforward interpretation of the song, showing Taylor as Tyler being an angry boss but still receiving praise, manspreading, and smoking a cigar on the subway as if he owns the place.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Released Their First Family Christmas Card—Starring Baby Archie

We interrupt your holiday plans to share that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s family Christmas card has finally arrived.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s latest Christmas memento was shared via Twitter on Monday afternoon by the royal charity Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle serve as the President and Vice President. On the digital card, the couple sits casually in front of a Christmas tree, while baby Archie crawls toward the camera. “Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year, from our family to yours!” it says in twinkling gold writing. Take a look:

This year’s card included a personal detail for Markle. Per People, the photo was taken by the 38-year-old’s close friend Janina Gavankar. The Morning Show actor has been friends with Markle since her Suits days and was among hundreds of guests who attended the royal wedding in May 2018.

Markle and Prince Harry reportedly went the digital route for the card for an important reason: A source told Harper’s Bazaar they wanted their greeting to be environmentally friendly. As royal fans know, Markle is a huge proponent of sustainable and eco-conscious fashion. The source also said their card was only sent to friends and family, as well as the patronages and charities they work with.

Monday’s digital greeting is the second Christmas card the couple have released together. Last year, the pair sent their holiday wishes with a never-before-seen photo from their May 2018 wedding. The stunning shot showed the pair watching fireworks at their reception.

When will we next catch a glimpse of the royal family’s Sussex branch? Not for a while. Royal officials revealed that the royal pair would be spending Christmas in Canada this year. The family’s staying there as part of a six week break from royal engagements.

Miley Cyrus Released a Christmas Song About Feeling Lonely This Holiday Season

Miley Cyrus has released a new track titled “My Sad Christmas Song” for anyone who has a broken heart this holiday season. The singer posted a link to her SoundCloud on December 21, as well as shared a poignant message to let her fans know they’re not alone.

With lyrics like “I turn on the radio/ I binge watch our favorite shows/ This year feels kind of lame/ But the last one was the same,” the song describes the heavy feeling of the holiday blues—especially if you’re missing a loved one.

“A sad Christmas song I wrote a few years back right before the holidays,” Cyrus wrote on Instagram. “Was feeling like s**t cause I couldn’t be with the one I loved. Even with a house full of family and friends I still felt alone.”

She continued, “In ways that still feels relevant and someone reading this right now could possibly relate! If you feel lonely this season just know YOU ARE COMPLETELY MADE OF MAGIC!”

“You are as special as a snowflake, beautifully unique and I hope inside your soul feels light, hope, peace, and joy knowing how singularly amazing YOU are! Love always wins!” Cyrus added.

After dropping the song, the pop star received a lot of love on Twitter from fans who said they needed to hear her message after losing their loved ones.

Though Cyrus didn’t reveal who inspired the track, chances are she’s referring to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

In 2015, the two were months away from reconciling since they were spotted at a musical festival in January 2016. This time of year is also reminiscent because Cyrus and Hemsworth had a secret December wedding at their home in Nashville last year.

The couple have since gone their separate ways after announcing their split over the summer.

Since then, Cyrus has been linked to Cody Simpson, but breakup rumors have been swirling since Simpson was recently spotted with another woman. Perhaps Cyrus was sending a pointed message with her new track as well?

Barack and Michelle Obama Just Released a Summer Playlist Full of Bops

We’ve always known Barack and Michelle Obama are cool, but they just keep outdoing themselves. On Saturday, Barack went on Instagram and shared everything he and Michelle have been jamming to lately, proving that they’re still some of the most on-trend people we’ve ever had in the White House.

The playlist is basically a summer turn-up mix, and includes everyone from Lizzo to Drake and Rihanna to SZA. They also made sure to put new romantics Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes on there, in addition to D.C. rapper Goldlink and flamenco experimentalist Rosalia from Spain. There are also some standard classics that never go out of style: “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” by Stevie Wonder, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Frank Sinatra, and “Can I Kick It” by A Tribe Called Quest.

“With summer winding down, here’s a sampling of what Michelle and I have been listening to — some new, some old, some fast, some slow. Hope you enjoy,” Barack wrote.

The playlist came just a few days after Barack had shared what he’s been reading this summer. His list featured collected works by Toni Morrison, who passed away this month, as well as The Nickel Boys by Pulitzer-winner Colson Whitehead and How to Read the Air by Ethiopian-American novelist Dinaw Mengestu.

Just before the playlist came out, Lizzo had tweeted that Barack had been the first president she could vote for and how proud she was to exercise her right to cast a ballot. She, understandably, freaked out on Instagram a little while later when the former president revealed he’s been listening to her hit, “Juice.”

“I TWEETED THIS AT 10:26AM AND ONE HOUR LATER PRESIDENT @barackobama TWEETED ABOUT ME!!! WE’RE FRIENDS NOW I DONT MAKE THE RULES!!! STREAM JUICE!!! OBAMA’S 6# FAVORITE SONG RN,” she wrote in an overjoyed, all-caps caption.

We would be losing our minds, too, Now, excuse us while we blast this playlist at every summer barbecue left in 2019.
