Buckingham Palace Just Issued a Rare Statement About Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Baby

It’s almost time for Baby Sussex, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, to finally make his or her debut. And at last we have a new statement from Buckingham Palace about plans surrounding the royal baby’s arrival—well, sort of.

The palaces (first Kensington, now Buckingham after Prince Harry and Markle’s split to establish their own household) have remained basically silent since the pregnancy was first announced in October 2018. “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” KP posted to both Twitter and Instagram at the time. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Now, the latest announcement continues to prove Prince Harry and Markle are doing this royal baby thing their way—and I’m so glad they are. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby,” the statement from Buckingham Palace reads. “Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”

This is as sure a sign as we’ve seen that Markle won’t be standing outside a hospital for a photo call mere hours after giving birth, like her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. (Reporters do expect to be informed when the duchess is in labor.) As a royals fan, am I low-key sad we won’t immediately get a photo of Baby Sussex? Sure. As a woman, though, I think it’s fantastic Markle (and Prince Harry) are doing what’s right for them and not what’s expected (or wanted) from the world. This is their family and their baby, after all.

Of course, Baby Sussex will be seventh in line for the throne, which puts Prince Harry and Markle in a different position than Prince William and Middleton were in upon the birth of their children, as noted by royals reporter Chris Ship. (Prince George is third in line behind his father and Prince Charles, with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis following behind him.)

Ship also tweeted, “Perhaps the biggest question is this: Why should we expect any woman, royal or otherwise, to stand in front of a bank of cameras just hours—or even days—after she has given birth? You can see how Meghan looked at that prospect and thought, ‘thanks but no thanks’ …” Reactions to this announcement have been generally supportive across social media:

Whenever we see that first photo of the royal baby, I’ll be thrilled—and all the more so knowing it’s the way Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted it to happen.

An Avocado Recall Has Been Issued After Possible Listeria Contamination

Before you do your weekly groccery run, take note: A voluntary avocado recall has been issued due to concerns over potential listeria contamination.

Henry Avocado Corporation issued a voluntary recall of whole avocados over the weekend after a routine government inspection tested positive for listeria bacteria at one of their packing facilities. It’s bad news for avocado lovers, but before you freak out, there’s no evidence of a listeria outbreak yet—so far, no cases have been reported, according to the company.

Still, it pays to be cautious. The avocado recall so far includes avocados (both organic and regular) that have been shipped to six states: Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. (Avocados from Mexico that were packed by Henry Avocado are reportedly okay to eat, according to CNN.)

Listeria monocytogenes can be a dangerous bacteria—especially for pregnant women. Like most of the bacteria that causes food poisoning, listeria typically causes fever and diarrhea but for pregnant women, a listeria infection can manifest more like the flu, with muscle aches and fatigue occurring on top of the fever and digestive distress, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An infection during pregnancy can have really serious consequences: miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or possibly a serious infection for newborns.

Luckily, cases of listeriosis aren’t super common. The CDC reports an estimated 1,600 cases each year, resulting in 260 annual deaths.

So, what should you do? CNN reports that Henry Avocado is contacting retailers directly to make sure the at-risk avocados are being pulled from shelves. But you should also inspect the avocados you have at home. The recalled avocados come from California and may have a “Bravocado” sticker. The company cautions that these stickers are not on the organic avocados that came from the facility—those simply have “organic” and “California” on the sticker. If you have either of these avocados at home, err on the side of caution and throw them out or bring them back to the store for a refund ASAP.

The Royal Family Just Issued Strict Social Media Guidelines for Commenters

The British royal family is always about rules and protocols, both formal and informal. And ever since Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton joined the family, information about things like who has to curtsy to who and whether or not they’re allowed to close their own car doors have become subjects of fascination. Now, in a joint message from Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, Prince William and Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the royals are laying down the rules for commenters on their respective social media channels: @RoyalFamily, @ClarenceHouse, and @KensingtonRoyal..

The new social media community guidelines are likely a response to the increasingly negative interactions in the comments section, most prominently around commentary about Middleton and Markle. Even a casual glance at comments on posts about the two show some rather heated exchanges that can often become nasty and defamatory. This new announcement would seem to be an attempt to reign in the trolls.

“The aim of our social media channels is to create an environment where our community can engage safely in debate and is free to make comments, questions and suggestions,” the guidelines read. “We ask that anyone engaging with our social media channels shows courtesy, kindness and respect for all other members of our social media communities.” Basically, they’re looking for a common sense of decorum that is often lost on the Internet by laying out specific rules—and consequences.

They say that comments must not:

  • Contain spam, be defamatory of any person, deceive others, be obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful, inflammatory or promote sexually explicit material or violence.
  • Promote discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age.
  • Breach any of the terms of any of the social media platforms themselves.
  • Be off-topic, irrelevant or unintelligible.
  • Contain any advertising or promote any services.

If you break any of the above, they can hide or delete your comments or block you altogether. On a more serious note, obviously related to the safety of members of the family, they “reserve the right to send any comments we deem appropriate to law enforcement authorities for investigation as we feel necessary or is required by law.”

Hopefully this will squelch some of the nasty commentary happening around the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And it seems a perfect time to remind everyone that you can indeed have a preference for one woman without “hating” or demonizing the other—or just love them both, like we do.

Do Not Eat Romaine Lettuce: Health Officials Have Issued a Massive Recall

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new romaine lettuce recall Tuesday—just in time to throw off your Thanksgiving dinner meal prep. Here’s what you need to know to avoid turning your holiday into an outbreak.

The recall comes after reports of a multi-state outbreak of E. coli, which has so far sickened 32 people in 11 states, plus another 18 people in Canada. “CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak,” the organization stated.

The warnings indicate the romaine lettuce recall is widespread—unlike others that only apply to certain brands, states or stores, the CDC is currently considering all romaine lettuce unsafe to eat. This means if you have whole, bagged, or boxed romaine in your fridge, throw it out. If you have a salad mix that contains romaine lettuce, throw it out. Even if you have romaine that you’ve eaten and haven’t gotten sick from, throw it out. The CDC is even suggesting washing your fridge shelf or drawer where the romaine was kept. Avoid ordering it at restaurants or buying it at retailers.

Why the all the precautions? E. coli is nothing to mess around with—standard outbreak symptoms include cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting—but this particular strain, called Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, can be especially severe. So far, 13 people have been hospitalized from the outbreak in the U.S., including one who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure, though no deaths have been reported according to the CDC.

If you did eat contaminated lettuce, you’ll know pretty quickly. Symptoms can show up anywhere from one to 10 days after exposure, the CDC says. Most cases are mild, so don’t panic. But if you’re still feeling sick after three days, have a high fever or can’t keep any liquids down, don’t wait until after the holiday weekend to see a doctor.

And if romaine was anywhere on your Thanksgiving menu, make an emergency switch to spinach.

Khloé Kardashian Just Issued a Preemptive 'PSA' About Her 'Pregnancy Lips'

Season 15 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians premieres on Sunday night (can you believe?!), and Khloé Kardashian—given that she’s fully aware of what the Internet can be like—is laying it down before the trolls can get a word in. She took to Instagram Stories ahead of the premiere to share a message that not only gives a hint about the months in her life that the upcoming season will document but tells haters, preemptively, to back off.

“PSA I was pregnant during this entire season of KUWTK,” she wrote. “Some women get “pregnancy lips”. I was one of them. So my lips look crazy and massive. Trust me I know and I HATED it! A lot of wild shit happens to your body and face while pregnant. It’s out of our control.”

She continued, making a very important point: “Most people don’t have to film during an entire pregnancy so Just watch the show and be kind about my growing body and lips. Pregnant women should be off limits.”

Kardashian is obviously too right about how pregnant women should be—but often aren’t—off limits when it comes to comments about their bodies and appearance (that being said, all women should be off limits when it comes to those kinds of unsolicited comments). Bodies change like crazy during pregnancy, from weight gain to stretch marks to fuller lips, and that’s completely natural and part of the whole deal.

She’s not the only one who’s had to quash trolls going on about “pregnancy lips,” either: Beyoncé’s publicist actually had to address rumors that Bey had gotten lip injections, explaining that her fuller lips were a side effect of pregnancy.

“Swelling is a normal part of pregnancy, and it happens in just about every part of your body, including your lips,” Sherry Ross, M.D., ob-gyn and women’s health expert at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, told Glamour last May.

Welp, there ya go: We heard it from Khloé, from a doctor, and from (the closest person to) Beyoncé herself.

Chrissy Teigen Issued Her Best Clapback Yet After Sharing This Breastfeeding Pic

Chrissy Teigen, Queen of Relatable Motherhood Posts, has enlightened us on many aspects of becoming a mother twice over. She goes all out to not spare us any of the details, from her tweet confirming “postpartum life is 90% better when you don’t rip to your butthole” (no, you’re not alone with that too-real cringe) and taking to her Instagram Stories to show off her unfiltered stretchmarks. She’s also been an advocate for normalizing breastfeeding, with posts discussing her “milky” boobs and Legend’s ‘gram of her pumping milk on the way to a Father’s Day dinner.

Teigen was doing the good work once again on Saturday, with an Instagram post showing her breastfeeding baby Miles, who’s coming up on two months old. The photo shows her seemingly au naturel on a chaise lounge, breastfeeding Miles, who’s covered with a baby blanket. She has a little helper on the edge of the frame, too: little Luna, who’s coming over with a blanket to cover…her babydoll, who Teigen is pretending to feed too.

“Luna making me feed her babydoll so I guess I have twins now,” she captioned the post.

Most of her fans identified with the pic—and thanked her for continuing to use her huge social media following to normalize breast-feeding.

“Mind-boggling how something so natural, pure and beautiful could possibly be offensive… #MommaPower,” one wrote.

“Thank you for showing yourself breast-feeding. It’s so important that women who are able breast-feed their children. Our society is so ridiculously hung up on breasts, that we discourage publicly doing one of the most natural things possible. You are a lovely role model,” wrote another.

There were also rightful comments about her perfection of the art of the messy bun.

However, one person was none too pleased.

“Christ in a hand basket,” the Twitter user wrote. “Menstruating, childbirth and sex are natural, too, but that doesn’t mean I want to see pics of it and/or celebrities like @chrissyteigen taking a bath or nursing. We get it.”

And Teigen, of course, had a great response—offering us a new life mantra in the process.

“I don’t care to see grainy fireworks, coachella selfies or infinity pool pics but i let people live. calm your tits and scroll on by,” she offered.

Let’s repeat for effect: “Calm your tits and scroll on by.”
