This Is Reportedly the Moment Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Knew They'd Step Down


It’s been a full week since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they’re stepping down as senior members of the royal family. Slowly but surely, details surrounding their decision have been trickling out⁠—including, now, the moment they knew they wanted to shake things up.

A palace source who spoke to People says baby Archie’s birth is when everything changed. That was May 2019, in case you forgot, and by then the Sussexes “knew they were going to hit the nuclear button,” says this source.

Adds a friend of Markle and Prince Harry’s, “When Meghan came around and she was interested in making changes, [Harry] welcomed it.” A second friend tells the publication that when Archie was born, the pair’s focus shifted even more to “doing what’s right for their family.”

In case you’re not caught up on the details, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry issued a statement last week that said they would be taking a step back from the royal family in an attempt to establish financial independence. “It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they wrote.

Multiple reports have circulated about how other senior members of the royal family feel about this decision. The only definitive thing we know is that Queen Elizabeth II is seemingly on board—at least from the statement she released to the public.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” she said. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

Alex Rodriguez Was Just as Floored by Jennifer Lopez's Versace Moment as You Were


The world is still reeling at the sheer power of Jennifer Lopez, who at age 50, walked the 2020 Versace runway in a reimagined version of the famous green dress she wore 20 years ago — looking just as good, if not better. She got a standing ovation at the show and tons of love online, but her fiancé and forever cheerleader Alex Rodriguez may have been the most floored of all.

On Saturday, A-Rod was obviously still thinking about the show-stopping moment. He posted a behind-the-scenes shot of J.Lo posing in front of a mirror in the gown. His caption was short but pretty direct: “This woman…,” he wrote.

The former baseball player has always shown his love for the singer through very public displays of affection. Not that that’s surprising; he said 20 years ago that Lopez was his dream date — which, we should point out, was right around the time she first wore the iconic plunging-neck sheer dress to the 2000 Grammy Awards. The couple got engaged this year after dating for two years, but J. Lo has said that they’re not in a rush to start wedding planning. She’s been busy on tour and wrapping up Hustlers, which is being called the “movie of the year” and is getting some serious Oscar buzz.

In an interview with Vogue, J.Lo opened up about the iconic garment, and how it marked a major fashion and pop culture moment (and made her fans’ jaws collectively drop both in 2000 and today).

“That was a moment that captured people’s imaginations, I think . . . in terms of my career, this dress really marked a moment in time,” she said. “Even if you don’t know my music and you don’t know my movies, people know about that moment and that dress. That was it.”

Kaitlyn Dever Is Ready for Her Moment in the Sun


When Kaitlyn Dever strolled into the Manhattan restaurant on an overcast September afternoon, she looked like the physical manifestation of sunshine. Literally: The 22-year-old actor was dressed in head-to-toe marigold, a look she credited her stylist, Karla Welch. Turns out the outfit is part of a recent style renaissance that included a closet clean out ending in eight bags of clothes.

“I was realizing how many style phases I’ve gone through, and some of them are…interesting,” says Dever, ticking them off on her fingers. “Crocheted tops—I was doing a lot of ‘boho’ shopping. The floppy hats look, I wore that one a lot.” There was even a brief flirtation with going goth that coincided with a crush on Chris Angel.

Were you into magic? I wondered. “No, I like tattoos,” Dever deadpans, arching an eyebrow. “I know, very edgy. I was 14; it was a formative year. Kind of gives you a glimpse into my taste.” She’s since moved on from Chris Angel—these days, she says she’s dying to work with Jeff Goldblum—but the search for a signature style continues. “I feel like I’m constantly becoming other people, and then I’m dressing like the character I play,” she says. “That’s why I feel so scatterbrained in my style.”

When it comes to her career, however, Dever knows exactly what she wants: She’s been acting since she was nine—early roles include “Adorable Girl” in the Make It or Break It series and a part in An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong. Nearly a decade of recurring roles on series like Justified and Last Man Standing followed. This year, Dever officially went from rising star to supernova with a breakout role in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart alongside Beanie Feldstein. The movie, about two BFFs who strive to have one wild night before high school ends, was called “one of the best teen comedies to come along in years” by The A.V. Club and has an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Dever and Feldstein’s Amy and Molly have become the heirs apparent to Lucy and Ethel or, more recent, Abbi and Ilana—in other words, a comedy duo that proves once and for all the buddy genre isn’t just for the boys.

Now, people are buzzing about Dever’s performance in Unbelievable. The Netflix series is based on a jaw-dropping, real-life ProPublica investigation and has become a tentpole of the fall TV lineup. In it, Dever plays Marie, a teenager who is raped at knifepoint, reports the incident to police, and then recants her story after detectives pressure her into confessing that she made it all up for attention.

This U.S. Open Moment Between Naomi Osaka and Cori 'Coco' Gauff Is the Definition of Sisterhood


On Saturday, August 31, Naomi Osaka and Cori “Coco” Gauff faced off in the final round of the U.S. Open for a thrilling match between the two athletes who have been dubbed “the future of women’s tennis.” But in the end, Osaka prevailed over Gauff, beating her 6-3 6-0—and as soon as she won the match point, the two athletes met at the net, exchanged a few words and hugged. But then something downright pure happened—and it’s pretty much the definition of what sisterhood is about.

As a teary-eyed Gauff gathered her belongings, Osaka approached her and asked her to join her for the post-match interview, which is usually reserved for the winning player. Though the 15-year-old initially declined the offer, Osaka assured her that it was OK to cry and encouraged her to seize the opportunity to address the crowd who came to see her.
“These people are here for you,” she told Gauff. “I think it’s better than going into the shower and crying. We have to let these people know how you feel.”

It was very similar to when Serena Williams comforted Osaka following the U.S. Open final last year. After Osaka defeated her idol Williams, the veteran tennis star defended her opponent against an upset crowd.

You Have to See Beyoncé and Blue Ivy's Twinning Moment at The Lion King Premiere


Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King won’t hit theaters until July 19, but last night (July 9) the stars hit the red carpet for the big premiere in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé, who stars in the film as the grown-up Nala, obviously won the night, arriving in matching Alexander McQueen looks with her daughter, Blue Ivy. The duo looked incredible in their tuxedo jackets and sparkly tulle skirts, with intricate braids and accompanying silver hair accessories.

Megan Rapinoe Had an Epic Response to Alex Morgan’s Tea-Sipping Moment


Like the champion she is, U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe defended her teammate Alex Morgan from critics who have taken issue with the tea-sipping gesture Morgan made during a semifinal match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup this week. In an interview Rapinoe praised Morgan and then clapped back at haters so perfectly that the whole thing was, well, goals.

To recap, Morgan celebrated her 30th birthday by scoring one of two goals that brought the U.S. Women’s National Team to victory over England on Tuesday. Her reaction? She pretended she was sipping a cup of tea and lifted her pinkie high in the air, a perfectly cheeky version of a fist-pump, tailor-made for the rival team.

While most people thought the move was, as the English would say, bloody brilliant, not everyone was thrilled. Lots of social media users (particularly those in the U.K.) called Morgan out for being too cocky—a constant criticism during their historic World Cup run. As the USWNT racks up wins on their way to the final on Sunday, trolls have argued that their on-the-field celebrations have been distasteful.

Rapinoe, however, had some thoughts when asked about the meme-making moment after the game. “That was next-level. That was pretty sharp by Alex,” she said, joking that next time she’d have to do something bigger so Morgan wouldn’t upstage her. An interviewer than asked what Rapinoe thought of the backlash Morgan’s faced, and the athlete quickly made it clear that the U.S. Women’s National Team has nothing but love for their opponents.

“Wah, wah, wah,” she said. “I mean, it’s like, we’re at the World Cup, what do you want us to do? This is the biggest stage, the biggest moment. I don’t think anyone truly believes that we disrespect the game or disrespect our opponents. We have the utmost for England and every team that we’ve faced and every team that we will face, forever and ever. That’s just part of the DNA of the squad. With that said, we work hard, we like to play hard, and we like to have fun and enjoy ourselves, and these are the absolute biggest moments to do that.”

Rapinoe has been frank and articulate when it comes to matters off the field too. The LGBTQ-rights activist recently made headlines for saying that she won’t go to the White House if the team is invited by President Trump, and she’s been one of the leaders in a gender-discrimination lawsuit her team leveled against the U.S. Soccer Federation. She’s a GOAT in every way.
