Carole Baskin of ‘Tiger King’ Deserved Better

I ate up Tiger King, Netflix’s smash hit docu-series, as if it were a family-size bag of Hot Cheetos—my mouth watering, my stomach slightly nauseous.

The seven-part series, which dropped a new bonus episode this week, has everything: Baby animals! Giant tigers! Guns! Botched hit jobs! Hot, troubled ladies! Bloody body parts! Murder mysteries! Three-way weddings! The FBI! Meth! The sudden appearance of Shaquille O’Neal!

Because of this, the characters on Tiger King feel more fabulous, more real (and more on meth) than what you’d find in almost any nondocumentary movie or show. It’s as if the creators elevated the greatest parts of reality TV and mashed them up with the most binge-able murder podcast and a kitten-themed Tumblr.

If there is a psychological urge that makes humans want to slow down when we see a car wreck on the side of the road, Tiger King is like a 32-car pileup with a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper’s worth of tiger cubs tumbling out of blood-spattered windows. Of course we stop and gawk.

And of course we pick faves. A poll by the company Morning Consult and the Hollywood Reporter asked just under 500 Tiger King viewers whether they had favorable or unfavorable opinions about each of the main people who appeared on the show.

The poll found that the character viewed most favorably is Joe Exotic (47%). Coming in dead last is Carole Baskin at 27%. In between them is Doc Antle, with 35% of people polled saying they view him favorably. These numbers match the way the media have generally responded to Tiger King. Early coverage of the series focused on the disappearance of Carole Baskin’s husband. Stories about Doc Antle, meanwhile, noted that he attended the 2001 VMAs. When Saturday Night Live spoofed Tiger King last Saturday, Baskin was the brunt of the joke. This series covers animal abuse, domestic violence, suicide, sexual coercion, and hit jobs—but somehow there seems to only be enough space in the narrative to talk about Carole Baskin.

Look at Twitter: 960 people tweeted about her in the last hour, saying things like, “Carole Baskin is a fuckin bitch” and “fuck that bitch Carole Baskin.” #FreeJoeExotic trended for so long on Twitter that the president actually said he would look into it. As for Doc Antle, not enough people have tweeted about him in the last hour for Twitter to provide statistics.

The general attitude of fans towards the folks on Tiger King seems to be: Everyone in this show is a weirdo, so pick your fighter. And of course nobody wants the lady with the condescending smirk and the leopard-print leggings, who’s always tattling to Congress. We want the dude with the gun and the mullet who mass-produces tiger-themed lube with his face on it. This is America, and we know good entertainment when we see it.

The Tiger King and I: 9 Wild Revelations From the Netflix Special Episode

When asked if Maldonado-Passage should be in prison, Saff seemed torn. “I think justice was served, but I still don’t wanna see that man die in prison,” he said.

Joe Exotic reportedly went to a Shaman after his husband’s death. Maldonado-Passage’s former campaign manager Josh Dial says the gubernatorial candidate never sought counseling after the tragic death of his husband, Travis Maldonado. “What Joe did was he spoke to a Shaman,” Dial said. “I think it worsened his condition. I’m all for holistic approaches, but sometimes you need real legitimate counseling and medication and he wasn’t gettin’ it.”

Joe Exotic allegedly asked Kirkham to kill Baskin. McHale video chatted with reality TV producer Rick Kirkham all the way from Norway, and boy did he have a lot to say about his time with Maldonado-Passage.

“I mean he asked me to kill Carole one time,” he told McHale when asked if he had thoughts about the murder for hire plot. “But you know, it was like a joke. He was like, ‘I’ll make you a rich man if you kill Carole.”

Still, Kirkham says that the end of his partnership with Maldonado-Passage marked a turning point. “But that’s when he got serious. When I left the park and the zoo burned, the studio burned, that’s when Joe started downhill hard,” he said.

Kirkham regrets ever meeting the eccentric zoo owner. “I too was sucked into the surreal world of Joe Exotic,” he explained. “I will never get over…I still have nightmares, Joel. I still have nightmares today. I had nightmares last night. And since this documentary came out, I’ve had more nightmares about having lived on that park. I want to put this chapter away but it keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Netflix

Joe Exotic is reportedly terrified of big cats. Perhaps the craziest detail that never made it into the documentary is Kirkham’s claim that Maldonado-Passage was afraid of tigers.

After explaining that he once saw Maldonado-Passage shoot a horse for “tiger meat” after promising its owner to give it a good life, Kirkham admitted to seeing the zookeeper shoot two tigers. “One of them because he was pissed off at the tiger because the tiger nearly bit him one day,” Kirkham recalled.

“The one thing that wasn’t pointed out in the docuseries that’s really important to know, too, Joe was terrified of big cats,” he added later on the video chat. “He was scared to death of lions and tigers. In the shots that you see in there, where he’s in with two tigers—the white one and the other one—the white one is blind and the other one is on tranquilizers. It’s idiotic to think how he’s become famous as ‘the tiger king’ when he’s so terrified of big cats.”

“Wow, I did not know that,” McHale responded. Neither did we. Who else can’t wait for the Carole Baskin series?!

A New Episode of Tiger King Is Coming to Netflix April 12

The rumors are true: A new episode of Tiger King is coming to Netflix.

In early April, Netflix released a new interview with Tiger King’s Joe Exotic from prison, which only increased fans’ hopes to see more of the true-crime show, centered on an outlandish zookeeper, Exotic, who was convicted of attempting to hire an assassin to take out his rival, Carole Baskin (along with multiple wildlife abuse charges, including killing five tigers).

Then, of course, Exotic’s other rival, Jeff Lowe, announced on Cameo that Netflix would release one more episode of this truly wild ride. But without a statement from Netflix to back up his claim, there was no way to know for sure.

Until now, that is. On April 9, Netflix announced that an after-show of sorts called The Tiger King and I, hosted by Joel McHale, is coming on April 12. It will feature new interviews with the series’s supporting players, including John Reinke, Joshua Dial, John Finlay, Saff, Erik Cowie, Rick Kirkman, and Jeff Lowe. Hopefully, there will be even more of that Joe Exotic prison interview, as well.

“It’s eye-opening and, hopefully, funny,” McHale promises. Unfortunately, Baskin will not be a part of the eighth installment. “We have not been approached about a new episode and would not participate if asked,” a representative for Baskin told Entertainment Weekly in a statement. It also seems Doc Antle and his wives have been left out.

For more on Baskin and the mysterious disappearance of her former husband, you’ll just have to wait for the Investigation Discovery (ID) series, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic. “Love her or hate her, Carole is now in the center ring of the big-cat circus,” the network said in a statement, per EW. “Is she a selfless crusader and protector of animals who found unimaginable strength despite the mysterious disappearance of her husband? Or are we witnessing Carole Baskin’s master plan finally take effect? Despite her claims of innocence, did she orchestrate the disappearance of Don Lewis to seize control of his fortune, consolidate power and lay waste to her foes? No one seems to be talking–except for one man—and that man is the center of ID’s upcoming investigative series.”

Netflix

With a mini-series also on the way, starring Kate McKinnon as Baskin, it looks like we’ll be getting a lot more Tiger King content for a very long time.

Tiger King: Cardi B Wants to ‘Free’ Joe Exotic by Starting A GoFundMe

Everyone’s obsessed with Tiger King right now, especially Cardi B.

In fact, the rapper is very much team Joe Exotic after watching Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, the most-talked about new docuseries on Netflix.

The “Money” hitmaker has been serving up some amazing quarantine content, including her viewing of the bonkers seven-part series, which follows the story of the eccentric zoo-owner who was arrested and is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for two counts of murder for hire and other charges.

In a nutshell, Tiger King follows Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka Joe Exotic), an unregulated zoo owner in rural Oklahoma, and the story of his epic feud with Carole Baskin, the founder of Big Cat Rescue and animal-rights activist. Then, in a wild turn of events, Maldonado-Passage ends up in jail for allegedly hiring an assassin to murder Baskin (don’t worry, she’s alive and well).

On Thursday night, March 27, Cardi live-tweeted her binge and revealed that she doesn’t believe Maldonado-Passage should be in jail, despite his conviction. The rapper said she’s planning to set up a GoFundMe account to free him from prison. “He shall be free,” she wrote on Twitter.

“They did Joe so dirty over and over again,” the rapper added.

Cardi also isn’t the biggest fan of Baskin, like many viewers who couldn’t really tell the difference between Big Cat Rescue and the zoos she rallies against. She even asked her followers to respond with their thoughts. “Who you think is more wrong,” she asked. “Narcissist joe? Or Greedy Carol? And why?”

Cardi is obviously not the only celebrity who’s obsessed with Tiger King. Everyone from Jared Leto to Chrissy Teigen and Kim Kardashian cannot stop talking about the true-crime series. Leto even dressed up as Maldonado-Passage for his watch party and I’ll never recover.

Other stars, including Dax Shepard, hope to be cast in a future biopic or series based on Tiger King.

They may just get their chance. According to Deadline, Kate McKinnon is set to star and executive produce a limited TV series in development at UCP. Based on the podcast Joe Exotic: Tiger King, the miniseries will follow Baskin (McKinnon) in her quest to take down Maldonado-Passage.

It sounds like the purrrfect casting if you ask me. Hopefully, Cardi will make a cameo appearance.

Here‘s Why Camilla Won‘t Be Called ‘Queen’ When Prince Charles Is King

Despite what you may have heard, Queen Elizabeth II will not reign forever. Her son, Prince Charles (the Prince of Wales), will eventually become king, which means his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will have to be called something else. But it turns out, her new title won’t be Queen Camilla.

The duchess has had a lot of names and titles. She was born Camilla Shand and married Andrew Parker Bowles, becoming Camilla Parker Bowles. Then, when she married Prince Charles in 2005, she took on the title the Duchess of Cornwall. The reason she was not known as the Princess of Wales was out of respect for the late Princess Diana.

So when Charles becomes king, what are we supposed to call Camilla?

Apparently there’s been some confusion about her future title throughout the years. According to the Daily Star (per the Sunday Times), it’s rumored that Prince Charles would like his wife to be called the queen consort, which is the title usually bestowed upon the wife of the reigning king. Alas, he will be disappointed.

“The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne,” a spokesperson for the royal couple recently told The Times. “This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Rob Jefferies/Getty Images

That’s true. Before the couple wed in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, Clarence House announced the creation of this new title. “It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the statement said. At the time, Slate described “princess consort” as a title created to avoid a P.R. crisis.

“It’s a new title created just for Camilla, because crowning her as queen would create P.R. problems for the royals,” columnist Daniel Engber wrote in February 2005. “A marriage between divorcees like Charles and Camilla remains taboo for some members of the Church of England, and Camilla is already unpopular for breaking up the prince’s marriage to Diana.”

Honestly, all this title-hopping is getting confusing. It’s reported that Princess Beatrice will also become a countess when she marries Italian “property tycoon” Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. That’s not even a part of the same royal succession. At this point, can’t we just call them all by their first names? It works for Harry.

Oprah Winfrey Says Gayle King Is Receiving Death Threats Over That Kobe Bryant Interview

Oprah Winfrey is defending best friend Gayle King in the wake of her controversial interview about the late Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in January.

On February 5, King received backlash from viewers for asking WNBA star Lisa Leslie about a sexual assault accusation made against Bryant in 2003. For the CBS This Morning segment on Bryant’s legacy, King asked Leslie if she felt, as a woman and a basketball player, that the case complicated his contributions. “It’s not complicated for me at all,” Leslie responded. “I have [never] seen him being the kind of person that would do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know.

“I think the media should be more respectful at this time,” Leslie continued. “It’s like, if you had questions about it, you’ve had many years to ask him that. I don’t think it’s something that we should keep hanging out his legacy.”

After an onslaught of furious reactions from fans and celebrities like Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent, King took to Instagram to explain that CBS had edited the interview in a way she did not approve of. “I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too,” King said on IGTV. “I am mortified, I am embarrassed, and I am very angry.

“For the network to take the most salacious part, when taken out of context, and put it online for people who didn’t see the whole interview is very upsetting to me. That’s something that I’ll have to deal with with them,” she said. “There will be a very intense discussion about that.”

On February 7, Oprah Winfrey—King’s longtime friendgave an update on the situation on the Today show.

“She is not doing well,” a tearful Winfrey revealed. “She has now death threats, has to now travel with security, and she’s feeling very much attacked. You know, Bill Cosby is tweeting from jail.

“In the context of the interview, everyone seemed fine, including Lisa Leslie,” Winfrey continued, defending King’s line of questioning. “And it was only because somebody at the network put up that clip. And I can see how people would obviously be very upset if you thought that Gayle was just trying to press to get an answer from Lisa Leslie.” Winfrey also warned against “misogynist vitriol” and online attacks.

“Obviously all things pass, she will be okay,” Winfrey said. “But she hasn’t slept in two days.”
