The Lion King Cast Received Hilariously Strict Instructions for Meeting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry


Everyone’s hearts skipped a beat earlier this week when Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z met at the London premiere of The Lion King. The foursome all looked so happy to be chatting: Beyoncé gave Markle a warm hug and reportedly called her “my princess,” and Prince Harry couldn’t stop smiling. To be a fly on the wall, am I right?

But underneath all these good vibes were some nerves from Beyoncé. In a new interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Billy Eichner (who plays Timon in The Lion King) says the whole cast was nervous meeting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, including Queen B, who’s basically American royalty.

“It was great, and we were all kind of nervous, even Beyoncé,” Eichner revealed. And that’s not all the tea he spilled: Apparently, The Lion King cast was given some very strict instructions for greeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Per Eichner, “In the days leading up to it, they email you a protocol of how you’re supposed to greet Prince Harry and Meghan. They are very intense about it. I’m not kidding! You’re supposed to say, ‘Your royal highness.’ You can’t speak until your hands are, like, in a handshake with his. My plus-one—my guest I brought with me, my very good friend Jared—they said he had to stand behind me and not speak unless he was spoken to. I’m not kidding! I was like, ‘Does that same rule apply to Jay-Z?’ I have a feeling it doesn’t.”

It all worked out, though. Even though Eichner says he “completely freaked out,” Markle and Prince Harry were apparently “very, very nice and totally chill and down to earth and lovely.” That sounds about right, given Prince Harry’s reported annoyance with the stuffiness of royal culture. “Harry is a man who, as a young boy, resented being a prince, resented the weighted burden that came with his title,” royals expert Katie Nicholl told Glamour a few months back.

Duchess Meghan Markle Met Queen Beyoncé at 'The Lion King' Premiere


It appears even Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is a member of the Bey Hive. On Sunday, Markle, alongside her husband Prince Harry, attended the London premiere of The Lion King. And it was there that the British royals met their equally regal American counterparts: Beyoncé and Jay Z.

Rebecca English, a royal reporter for The Daily Mail, happened to get a front-row seat to the two couples meeting and exchanging pleasantries after appearing on the red carpet. And, as English humorously pointed out, it appeared as though there was more security for Beyoncé than there was for the royal pair.

“There’s honestly more security around Beyoncé and Jay-Z than there is around the royals,” she wrote in a tweet showing off the first images of Beyoncé, who stars as Nala in The Lion King, as she steps foot on the carpet.

Then, in her next tweet, English wrote, “I’ve got a feeling this is what you might have been waiting to see,” along with a video of the couples shaking hands and hugging.

The meeting, The Daily Mail pointed out, came just a few months after Beyoncé and Jay-Z paid tribute to Markle by posing for a photo in front of a portrait of the duchess during their BRIT Awards acceptance speech.

Although the duchess is still technically on maternity leave, she reportedly attended in a show of support for one of the royal charitable foundations. The Daily Mail reported that with the release of The Lion King, Disney also announced the launch of a new campaign called Protect the Pride, aimed at raising awareness for the dwindling lion population. That campaign will also be supported by the Royal Foundation.

You Have to See Beyoncé and Blue Ivy's Twinning Moment at The Lion King Premiere


Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King won’t hit theaters until July 19, but last night (July 9) the stars hit the red carpet for the big premiere in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé, who stars in the film as the grown-up Nala, obviously won the night, arriving in matching Alexander McQueen looks with her daughter, Blue Ivy. The duo looked incredible in their tuxedo jackets and sparkly tulle skirts, with intricate braids and accompanying silver hair accessories.

Beyoncé also reunited with her fellow Destiny’s Child members, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, who looked stunning at the premiere.

Hear Beyoncé as Nala for the First Time in The Lion King's Latest Trailer


Disney is really working to make its reboot of The Lion King as epic as possible. In addition to rendering the film through some super fancy computer animation and getting Donald Glover to voice Simba, they snagged none other than Beyoncé for the role of Nala. Fans are already freaking out about Queen Bey’s turn as Queen of Pride Rock, and now a new teaser trailer lets us hear her in character for the first time.

The clip is pretty short, but it’s very Bey-heavy (thanks, Disney.) It basically only features Beyoncé’s voice over scenes from the movie. “Simba, you have to take your place as king,” she says at one point, and just like that we have an Oscar front-runner.

The BeyHive, naturally, is losing it on Twitter:

“Beyoncé’s voice sounds like velvet in that Lion King trailer,” one person wrote. “Beyoncé’s voice just sent shivers all over my body. Holy mother of Lions ??? #LionKing,” another Twitter user joked.

Beyoncé seems excited about the role, too. Over the weekend, she paid homage to Nala by wearing lion-inspired couture to her mother Tina Knowles’ Wearable Art Gala. She showed up in a sparkling gold body suit, complete with feathers and glittering sequins. In an Instagram post, she also added a clip of Blue Ivy in a full headdress, singing along to “The Circle of Life.” Clearly, both of them are getting super into the character.

The Lion King also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Oliver, Seth Rogen, and James Earl Jones, who’s reprising his role as Mufasa. That’s already a pretty jaw-dropping list of voice actors, and Beyoncé just elevates things even more. Now, all we need is to hear her versions of the movie’s iconic songs.

The Lion King hits theaters on July 19, 2019. Let the countdown begin.

It's Official: Beyoncé Will Play Nala In The Live-Action Lion King


On Wednesday, Disney casually announced the full cast for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved animated classic, The Lion King, and it includes none other than—ring the alarm!—Beyoncé. We’d already learned back in February that James Earl Jones and Donald Glover would play key roles in the remake, but we were not prepared for how un-casual the rest of the cast would also be. Take a look at this insanely stacked group for yourself:

As this dream Instagram unveiling reveals, Beyoncé is set to play the lioness Nala, Simba’s best friend turned [SPOILER ALERT] wife. Meanwhile, Simba will be played by none other than Golden Globe Winner Donald Glover.

Other cast members include Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, JD McCrary as Young Simba, Shahadi Wright Joseph as Young Nala, John Kani as Rafiki, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, John Oliver as Zazu and Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner playing the lovable Pumbaa and Timon respectively. Oh, and of course the magnificent James Earl Jones will be reprising his role as Mufasa because, duh. Nobody could do it better.

Beyoncé fans (otherwise known as the Beyhive) understandably went nuts with the casting announcement and quickly took to Twitter to share in their excitement for both the film and what will ultimately be a fire soundtrack thanks to Beyoncé and Glover’s talents. Mufasa and Scar Aren't Actually Brothers in 'The Lion King'

If you’re a ’90s kid, you’ve seen The Lion King at least 300 times. You can probably recite the entire script from start to finish, but for the three people who haven’t seen it, here’s a quick summary: A diabolical lion named Scar kills his royal brother, Mufasa, in order gain control of the Pride Lands, which causes Mufasa’s son (Simba) to run away. While stranded in the middle of nowhere, Simba meets a friendly meerkat (Timone) and warthog (Pumbaa), who help him get his stride back. After years of confidence-building, Simba returns to the Pride Lands to battle Scar and reclaim his father’s title. It’s standard, Disney tearjerker stuff—and we love it.

But we’ve all been getting a fundamental component of The Lion King wrong for two decades. As it turns out, Mufasa and Scar aren’t brothers—not by blood, at least. The sleuths over at HelloGiggles found this out after interviewing the 1994 film’s director (Rob Minkoff) and producer (Don Hahn).

“[While making the movie] we talked about the fact that it was very likely [Scar and Mufasa] would not have both the same parents,” Hahn said. “The way lions operate in the wild…when the male lion gets old, another rogue lion comes and kills the head of the pride. What that does is it causes the female lions to go into heat [to reproduce], and then the new younger lion kills the king and then he kills all the babies. Now he’s the new lion that’s running the pride.”

So, in other words, Scar was just a strange lion who sensed Mufasa was getting old, so he swooped in and killed him. Harsh, right? (Actually, maybe this isn’t as harsh as your own brother murdering you.)

“There was always this thing about well, how do you have these two [male] lions?” Hahn continued. “Occasionally there are prides that do have two male lions, in an interesting dynamic because they’re not equals [since they don’t have the same parents]. One lion will always kind of be off in the shadows. We were trying to use those animal truths to underpin the story so we sort of figured Scar and Mufasa couldn’t really be from the same gene pool.”

If you pay close attention to the movie, Scar actually confirms he and Mufasa aren’t birth brothers—but it’s subtle. “I’m from the shallow end of the gene pool,” he says at one point.

Mind blown, right? What bombshell are you going to drop next, Disney? That Elsa and Anna aren’t sisters?! I feel bad for even putting that in the universe.
