Prince Harry Delivers Emotional Speech About Decision to Step Back From Royal Life

By now you’ve likely heard the news that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, are officially stepping back as senior members of the royal family. And, you’ve likely heard plenty of rumors as to why they made that decision. But now, Prince Harry is setting the record straight, calling their decision to step down the only option.

On Sunday, he addressed the crowd at a dinner in honor of the Sentebale charity in London. Harry started his speech by stating, “I want you to hear the truth from me—as much as I can share, not as a prince or a duke, but as Harry, the same person that many of you have watched grow up over the past 35 years, but now with a clearer perspective.”

He continued, “The U.K. is my home and a place that I love. That will never change. I have grown up feeling supported by so many of you, and I watched as you welcomed Meghan with open arms, as you saw the love and happiness that I had hoped for all my life.” He added, with a slight chuckle, “Finally, the second son of Diana got hitched, hooray!”

In the speech, Harry explained that he and Meghan had the same values, beliefs, and hopes for the future and serving the queen. However, it quickly became apparent to the duo post-marriage that their life in the public eye would soon cause a strain that made it too hard to continue with life as-is.

“The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” he said. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option. What I want to make clear is, we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you.”

Harry then noted the couple hoped to continue their work serving the monarchy without the assistance of public funds, something the couple has been clear they would like to do in the future. “Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible,” he said. “I’ve accepted this knowing it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am, but I hope it helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”

He closed his speech by stating he remains committed to his grandmother’s work, who he has the “utmost respect” for and “will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me.”

“Together,” Harry said, “you have given me an education about living, and this role has taught me more about what is right and just than I could ever have imagined. We are taking a leap of faith, so thank you for giving me the courage to take this next step.”

Earlier this month, Harry and Meghan shocked the world by announcing their decision via social media.

This Is Reportedly the Moment Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Knew They'd Step Down

It’s been a full week since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they’re stepping down as senior members of the royal family. Slowly but surely, details surrounding their decision have been trickling out—including, now, the moment they knew they wanted to shake things up.

A palace source who spoke to People says baby Archie’s birth is when everything changed. That was May 2019, in case you forgot, and by then the Sussexes “knew they were going to hit the nuclear button,” says this source.

Adds a friend of Markle and Prince Harry’s, “When Meghan came around and she was interested in making changes, [Harry] welcomed it.” A second friend tells the publication that when Archie was born, the pair’s focus shifted even more to “doing what’s right for their family.”

In case you’re not caught up on the details, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry issued a statement last week that said they would be taking a step back from the royal family in an attempt to establish financial independence. “It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they wrote.

Multiple reports have circulated about how other senior members of the royal family feel about this decision. The only definitive thing we know is that Queen Elizabeth II is seemingly on board—at least from the statement she released to the public.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” she said. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

This Is Reportedly Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Decided to Step Down as Senior Royals

Things have been moving very quickly across the pond since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shocked the world with their decision to step down as senior royals.

There has been much speculation about who knew what and when, what their futures will look like as they work to become “financially independent,” and, of course, why this is happening at all. In a new People story, a friend of the couple says, “If relationships had been better, things would have been different.”

“This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” the friend continued. “There is so much bad blood in that family—it’s toxic.” (The person did not call out any specific members of the royal family by name.) Another source told People that the negative press left Markle, in particular, “deeply, deeply hurt.”

“Meghan and Harry didn’t feel they got enough comfort or solace from them,” the source also said.

Whatever is actually going on inside the family is hard for anyone to guess. But we do know Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry joined the queen at Sandringham yesterday for a summit to discuss solutions and possible plans for the Sussex’s future. Ahead of the meeting, the brothers released a joint statement condemning a story that stated William had “bullied” Prince Harry and Markle out of the family. “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a U.K. newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex & The Duke of Cambridge. For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful,” the statement read.

Queen Elizabeth also emphasized family in her statement yesterday after the meeting. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family,” she said.

It’s expected that decisions surrounding what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s future will look like will be made quickly, per the queen’s request. As for the complicated family stuff, that may take longer.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Step Down as ‘Senior’ Royals: 6 Questions Answered by Glamour's Resident Brit

Their move, of course, throws up SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. a great number of which we answer right here. But as the newly-resident Brit in the Glamour US offices (I’m Glamour’s new Executive Editor) —and Harry and Meghan superfan (yeah, AND?), I’ve taken it upon myself to attempt to answer the many other BURNING H&M questions that came tumbling out in the immediate aftermath. Here goes:

1. Does this mean Meghan can do SmartWater #sponcon?

Well, technically, probably yes. They have committed to extricating themselves from the shackles and limitations of being a “senior Royals”—thus giving up the Sovereign Grant which pays them around $2.5 million a year—meaning Meghan and Harry should be able to undertake work like any other civilian/Instagram influencer with over 10 million followers. Harry’s first cousins Princess’ Eugenie and Beatrice have both held down jobs—in an art gallery and at a technology firm respectively—while also retaining their Royal titles. And Zara Tindall, another of Harry’s first cousins who actually doesn’t have a Royal title, is not just a celebrated athlete but also a paid ambassador for global brands including Range Rover motors and iCandy strollers. As bonafide influencers in a digital age, don’t be surprised if they pop up as ambassadors for brands that align with their own goals. But lucrative speaking engagements might just be their first (slightly less controversial) port of call.

2. How does Kate REALLY feel about it?

Sadly, just because I have British blood does not mean I have a hotline to our Queen-in-waiting. Current British media speculation has William and Kate as blindsided as Queen Elizabeth. While Harry alluded to some tensions between himself and William in a recently televised interview with television presenter Tom Bradby, the issues were believed to have been mostly between the brothers. Kate also reportedly expressed her wish that her children and their cousin Archie could spend more time together, so it’s unlikely she’ll be celebrating H&M’s upcoming decampment abroad.

3. WTF does “work to become financially independent” mean?

“Granny’s no longer paying for us, but dad’s still giving me an allowance.” Plus, oh, that inheritance in the bank. Oh and Meghan’s fortune from her time on Suits. #prayforthesussexes

4. What are people in the U.K. saying about this? Do they actually care at all?

Yes we do! More than is rationally normal, especially for a family WE DO NOT KNOW and who, as is made more than regularly clear to us, DON’T REALLY WANT US TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM EITHER. Mainly, millennials and gen-Zers supports their decision. Frankly, wouldn’t we all want the profile and the Instagram followers, without having to censor our thoughts and tailor our lifestyles to the whims of a bunch of pale, stale, and male Royal officials? We’ve seen how Meghan and Harry have tried to modernize their roles to ones that reflect the lives and habits of their peers—and they’ve been faced with non-stop offensive, sexist, and racist criticism. But those Brits with a more traditional take don’t like the fact that Harry and Meghan have deserted their Queen and want to live life on their terms. They believe that the couple have a duty to share their lives and family in return for their lifestyle. I say, go your own way.

5. Will The Tig come back? (BRING BACK THE TIG.)

Good question, but sadly unlikely. However, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have actually patented the Sussex brand for a news publication or website as well as even t-shirts and merchandise, expect sussexroyal.com to become more editorialized. The Tig 2.0, if you will.

6. Who gets Sussex? Do they keep Sussex? Did she legally change her name?

As Buckingham Palace have suggested in their statement, all of these details are still to be worked out. We, however, have a different suggestion. Harry Markle has got quite a ring to it, dont’cha think?

Jane Fonda Says Greta Thunberg Inspired Her to Step Up Her Climate Activism

In the year since 16-year-old Greta Thunberg started striking to demand action on climate change, the movement has grown fast. Young people all over the world have started walking out of school once a week to call on the grownups to do something in an action called #FridaysforFuture. And when activists talk, Jane Fonda listens.

Fonda has been an outspoken advocate for most of her life, protesting war, violence, discrimination, and now our collective inaction when it comes to saving the planet. And last month, Fonda launched her Fire Drill Fridays campaign, promising to protest in Thunberg’s spirit each Friday through the end of 2019. (It’s led to her getting arrested at the U.S. Capitol on a regular basis.)

At Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards on November 11, Fonda continued to honor Thunberg’s example. She accepted Thunberg’s WOTY Award on the teen’s behalf as Thunberg continues to travel the United States to draw attention to the issue of climate change. With her at New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the occasion were activists Xiye Bastida, 17, Alexandria Villaseñor, 14, and Jade Lozada, 17. “When I saw Greta Thunberg strike for climate, I knew I had to mobilize my school and our city. Greta’s views match my own, that you take care of the Earth, and the Earth takes care of you,” Bastida said ahead of Fonda’s remarks.

Fonda delivered a passionate speech, reminding the audience of the power of activism. “I have not met Greta Thunberg, but Greta Thunberg changed my life,” Fonda said.

Fonda asked the crowd to become “warriors for the climate” on Thunberg’s behalf and take greater, bolder risks to save our planet. Read Fonda’s entire call-to-action on behalf of Greta Thunberg, below.

“I have not met Greta Thunberg, but Greta Thunberg has changed my life. I’d been feeling anxious and depressed, because I knew I wasn’t doing enough in the face of the catastrophe that is looming.

I drive an electric car. I’m stopping the use of single-use plastic in my home. I eat a lot less meat or fish. Yes, and fish, because fish stocks are plummeting because the ocean is becoming acidified and the climate is warming. These things are wonderful, they’re all very important, and we should all do them. But it’s a good place to start—it’s not a good place to stop. Because individual life choices like these can’t be scaled up in time to get us where we need to be.

But what do I do? I thought, I wondered, I asked myself in the comfort of my Beverly Hills home. And then I read about Greta.

I read that she’s on the spectrum. She has Asperger syndrome, and that means that unlike the rest of us, you see, people with Asperger see and learn things that are not clouded by the rationalizations and obfuscations of the rest of us. They don’t worry about being popular or fitting in. What they see, they see, pure and direct. And I knew that what Greta had seen was the truth.

When she realized what was happening and looked around and saw that no one was behaving like it was a crisis, it so traumatized her that she stopped speaking. When I read this, I decided that I needed to do something more than what I’d been doing.

Greta said, today we use 100 million barrels of oil every day. There are no politics to change that. There are no rules to keep the oil in the ground. And so we can’t save the world by playing by the rules, right? Right? Right? Greta knows that.

Here's Why Camila Cabello Has Decided to Take a Step Back From Instagram

Camila Cabello says she hasn’t been on social media much these days, but she’s made a few returns to Instagram lately to discuss some of the unhealthy ways she’s noticed people scrutinize each other online. Earlier this month, she wrote a thoughtful post about refusing to let people body-shame her. On Saturday, she hopped back on IG to explain why she’s been taking a break from the platform and offered fans some advice for how to refocus on living in the present.

Cabello has been the subject of renewed media and tabloid attention after rumors began flying about her alleged relationship with Shawn Mendes. (The paparazzi has taken tons of photos of them making out, and she recently left him a birthday tribute that read, “I love you!”) But the attention she gets isn’t always positive and in her new post, Cabello made it clear that she’s been focusing on herself and trying not to focus on the negativity that happens on the Internet.

On a picture of herself tagged in New York, she wrote, “Really wanted to send love to everyone on here—I don’t go on social media that much cause it’s not good for me, and I don’t know how to not be affected by what people say on here so I just don’t read it. But I am totally aware that I can use this platform to help people even in small ways!”

She then included a strategy that she uses to decompress and avoid getting too deep in her head. She explained that for the past few months, she’s been dabbling with meditation tips and doing things like pausing for five minutes to breathe. Already, she said that “can feel the quality of my life improving – I used to live so much in my head , constantly trapped in my overthinking and being in my head as opposed to the present moment- and lately just going back to my breath and focusing on it puts me back in my body and back in the present and helps me so much.”

“Do it three times a day and whenever you feel yourself getting overwhelmed,” she advised her followers. “I know lots of us on here are growing up and learning how to be human lol, and that can be intense and hard sometimes – I think some tools are really life changing and help you know how to do that better, so I just thought i’d share something that’s really helped me; and hopefully it helps you guys!!!!”
