Selena Gomez's Latest Red Carpet Dress Was Perfect—Except She Couldn't Move in It

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities manage to move at awards ceremonies in their intricate red carpet outfits, Selena Gomez set the record straight this week: Sometimes, they can hardly move at all.

On Thursday (February 6), Gomez attended the 2020 Hollywood Beauty Awards in Los Angeles wearing a blush pink dress by Patou and platform heels by Aquazzura. Her look was chic enough for the red carpet, yet simple enough to find a loose interpretation of it at Zara in two weeks’ time. In other words, it would make the perfect date-night outfit for Valentine’s Day.

Note how Gomez’s long sleeves are attached to the bodice of her dress with tight bows, forcing her to hold her arms at her sides. While the romantic silhouette was cute in front of the cameras, it ended up constricting the star later.

Gomez had to hold her arms at her side in her Patou dress.

Once the singer was seated at her table for the awards ceremony, her dress got in the way of basic dinnertime functions. Her off-the-shoulder sleeves were so far down on her arms, she couldn’t lift them to take a sip of her water. Instead, she had to slouch down in her seat so her glass could reach her mouth.

In videos posted to Instagram, Gomez laughs as she tries (and fails) to move normally in her dress. “I can’t f*cking move!” she exclaims in one. She repeats in the other video, “I can’t move my arms!” The things we have to do for fashion.

Gomez’s look was styled by Kate Young, whom she’s worked with since 2014. The dress is just as sophisticated as the other outfits Young has picked out for the 27-year-old to wear while promoting her new album, Rare. “It was really important that [Gomez] looked powerful and strong and it wasn’t about doing girlish or baby looks,” Young told People about Gomez’s current style era. “It was about her looking sexy and strong. She’s here to do business.”

The singer certainly has a lot of business ahead—and hopefully, she’ll have an easier time moving in her outfits to promote it. Last week, Gomez announced the forthcoming launch of her new beauty line, Rare Beauty. “Rare Beauty isn’t about how other people see you,” she wrote on Instagram with the collection reveal. “It’s about how you see yourself.”

Selena Gomez's New Album, Rare: All the Lyrics That Are (Maybe) About Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez’s highly-anticipated third studio album, Rare, dropped this Friday, January 10, and it will certainly make her fans happy. Sonically, the record is right on par with her critically-praised 2015 LP, Revival: minimalistic and mid-tempo with spurts of buzzy, electronic energy. The focus on Rare is definitely the lyrics, with subtle production that doesn’t overshadow Gomez’s stream of consciousness. The singer wrote in November 2019 that this record is her “diary from the past few years,” and that’s absolutely apparent.

Hell, we knew this from the first two singles, “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now,” alone. Nothing’s been confirmed, but it’s widely speculated both of those songs center on Gomez’s breakup with Justin Bieber, who’s now married to Hailey Baldwin. Lyrics like “In two months you replaced us like it was easy” have fans thinking Gomez is referring to how quickly Bieber began dating Baldwin after ending things with her in 2018.

And now, we have a full album of lyrics to dissect. To be clear, there’s nothing on here explicitly about Bieber—just general musings about heartbreak and healing. But if the album really is a diary of her past few years, Bieber no-doubt inspired some of what we’re hearing. Below, a breakdown of all the lyrics from Rare that could be about him (emphasis on could—think of this like a big fan theory more than anything):

“Rare”

This plucky pop tune is all about realizing that someone who doesn’t realize your worth is not worth your time. The lyrics are general but depict a romantic relationship—so that opens up the possibility this song is about Bieber.

“Baby, you’ve been so distant from me lately,” Gomez sings. “And lately, don’t even wanna call you baby. Waiting up for you upstairs. Why you act like I’m not there?”

“It feels like you don’t care,” she continues. “Oh why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?”

At one point, Gomez flat-out questions why she’s staying with this person. “Baby, don’t make me count up all the reasons to stay with you,” she says. “No reason why you and I are not succeeding at all.” Bieber and Gomez ultimately ended their relationship in 2018, at which point he started dating Baldwin.

“Dance Again”

By far the most uptempo track on the album “Dance Again” is light and fun—centering on Gomez letting go after months of stress. “I kickstart the rhythm,” she sings. “All the drama’s in remission.” The drama she’s referring to could be about Bieber. It wouldn’t be a stretch, seeing as how their relationship was operatically documented by tabloids.

“Lose You to Love Me”

Again, we have a full analysis of the maybe-about-Bieber lyrics here.

“Vulnerable”

On this song, Gomez questions entering a relationship with a person. “If I give you every piece of me, I know that you could drop it,” she sings. “Give you the chance, I know that you could take advantage once you got it. If I open up my heart to you, I know that you could lock it. Throw away the key, and keep it there forever in your pocket. If I give the opportunity to you, then would you blow it?”

Selena Gomez's 'Lose You to Love Me' Was Remixed With Justin Bieber's 'Sorry'

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are long over, but Jelena currently lives on in a new song mash-up that’s taken over the Internet. The track came together after music producer Andy Wu realized that Bieber’s “Sorry” and Gomez’s brand new ballad, “Lose You to Love Me”, actually make perfect sense together, so he masterfully remixed them and created a banger that currently has about 1.4 million views on YouTube.

The track starts off with the famous vocal loop from “Sorry,” but it’s played over the piano chords of “Lose You to Love Me.” Then, the song switches between verses from Bieber and Gomez’s respective songs, coalescing into a slower pop jam that is undeniably catchy. You can hear it, below, for yourself.

Reactions to the mashup are mixed:

“Lose You to Love Me” is Selena Gomez’s reentry into the music scene after a brief hiatus from public life. She released the vulnerable track last month, and fans immediately deduced that lyrics like, “In two months you replaced us like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it in the thick of healing” were about how quickly Bieber moved on to his current relationship with now-wife Hailey Baldwin.

Although the song is emotional, Gomez quickly indicated she’s actually in a great place with another new song, the uptempo “Look at Her Now.” She told journalist Zach Sang in a recent interview , though, that she wants “the individual” her music is about to hear what she has to say.

“For me, my intentions are never evil. They just aren’t. I don’t even know how to do that,” she explained. “I can be a bit snappy, but I always want to come from a place that’s genuine, and when I feel like some things haven’t been said, then I get to turn that into art.”

Selena Gomez's Cannes Makeup Had a Secret Nod to Miley Cyrus

Selena Gomez walked the famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet for the first time yesterday to promote her upcoming new movie, The Dead Don’t Die. From her white two-piece Louis Vuitton dress to some serious bling in the form of a Bulgari diamond necklace and ring, she looked incredible.

But what we really need to talk about is Gomez’s ridiculously good glam, specifically her makeup. The vibe was a modern take on Old Hollywood with a classic red lip and a cat-eye by makeup artist Hung Vanngo using Marc Jacobs Beauty. It also had a hidden nod to fellow former Disney star, Miley Cyrus. Vanngo used Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Oh Miley 200 ($32), a strawberry red shade inspired by the singer, on Gomez to give her lips a pop of color.

That wasn’t even the only pop star connection with her look. Vanngo revealed that he also used the brand’s Youthquake Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème ($59), which was Lady Gaga‘s secret skin weapon during awards season and the Met Gala. (Gaga’s longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno is an ambassador for the brand, so she got to test it out secretly for months before it hit shelves this month.)

Vanngo also used Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick in L23 ($32) and Accomplice Instant Blurring Beauty Powder in Siren 52 ($49) to create even more of a glow before adding O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tan-Tastic! ($49) and Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 506 Flesh & Fantasy ($42) for a touch of warmth.

And to balance Gomez’s bold red lip, Vanngo created a sparkly cat-eye. (Perhaps Taylor Swift was the inspiration?) Here’s how to re-create it for yourself.

First apply a light layer of See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Flashlight ($28) to give your lids that glittery look. Next, use the Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner—inspired by calligraphy pens—in Blacquer ($30) to create a bold wing liner that emphasizes your eye shape. Then, finish with a few coats of Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($26).

The final result? Flawless. If only a makeup look could win the Palme d’Or.

Here's Every Single Piece From Selena Gomez's Collection for Puma

Selena Gomez is taking her relationship with Puma to the next level. She signed with the brand as a spokesperson last year; then, in March, she designed a limited-edition sneaker and sock pairing. Now, she’s releasing a full-fledged collection—apparel, footwear, accessories, the works.

“I put a lot of effort in creating something that would appeal to every type of girl and wanted to show my personality with this collection,” Gomez said in a statement. Her favorites include the SG Runner, a white sneaker that draws from silhouettes from the ’80s and ’90s; and the layering pieces that are meant to be mixed and matched. (“SG” stands for both Selena Gomez and for the name of the collection, Strong Girl.) And, like her projects with Coach, Gomez peppered in discrete messages for her fans in the collection: “For me, details are everything, so that’s why we included some hidden, ‘strong girl,’ inspirational messages and design features,” she explained. (One of the sports bras, for instance, has “strong inside and out” written in script underneath a layer of mesh.)

SG x Puma drops in full today, online and in stores. Prices start at $30 for gloves and beanies, and go up to $200 for a jacket. Check out the assortment—plus the lookbook, which features Gomez alongside strong women in her life: Connar Franklin, Raquelle Stevens, Courtney J. Barry, Caroline Franklin, and Theresa Marie Mingus—in the gallery ahead.

Selena Gomez's 'Ugly' Barrette Is the Perfect Response to Trolls

Sometimes, a hair accessory is worth a thousand words… at least it can be if your name is Selena Gomez.

While in New York for Fashion Week, the singer stepped out wearing an eye-catching, bedazzled barrette in her hair, that clearly read “UGLY.” The tongue-in-cheek accessory was pinned onto her braided pony.

Check out the look, below.

The rest of her look was equally statement-making: a plus leather jacket, red-and-white gingham pants, and black pumps. But it was the barrette that really stole the show.

Though Gomez hasn’t addressed her choice of accessory, people on social media speculate that it’s a sartorial response to negative comments made of the singer. Most recently, Dolce & Gabbana’s Stefano Gabbana called Gomez some hurtful words on Instagram, reportedly responding to the ensuing backlash by mocking her even more.

Gomez chose to never respond to the designer publicly. But, if she’s using the backdrop of Fashion Week to send a subtle message to her detractors, it’s coming across loud and clear—and chic.
