19 Foods that Increase Fertility When You're Trying to Get Pregnant


If you make a Greek yogurt parfait, include berries, a tablespoon of unsweetened nut butter, and a few walnuts on top for the full effect.

10. Pomegranates

As an extra-flavorful topper, Becker reaches for pomegranates. “Antioxidant-rich pomegranates are also rich in many nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and several other vitamins and minerals that aid in fertility,” she says.

It’s really easy to enjoy them too. Simply sprinkle them onto your oatmeal or Greek yogurt in the morning, or enjoy them plain, she says. You can also enjoy them on top of that salmon and spinach salad.

11. Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein, and they can also help boost your fertility. “Eggs are rich in choline, which studies have shown can have significant positive effects on fetal development,” says Becker.

The easiest way to have them is first thing in the morning. “Supercharge your breakfast with a veggie-packed omelet or an egg baked inside of half an avocado,” Becker recommends. Just make sure you avoid the egg-white omelet option and never skip the yolk, she says, since that’s “where all of the good nutrients are.”

12. Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is another fertility food that’s great for reproductive health in both men and women. “Bee pollen has shown promise to promote sperm quantity and help boost fertility in women,” says Williams. “But make sure you get your bee pollen from a reputable source to ensure efficiency.”

While you can take it on its own, Williams says, it can also be added to smoothies “and used as a topping to your favorite parfait and breakfast bowl.” So get out your Greek yogurt and add the bee pollen.

13. Maca

Another food to add to your fertility diet is maca. “Superfoods like Peruvian maca may even boost sperm count,” says Williams.

This one might be best for your partner for that reason, but it certainly can’t help to incorporate some into both of your diets. A great way to do it is by adding it to your healthy smoothie for breakfast, along with avocado, spinach and maybe even a bit of Greek yogurt and bee pollen. Since it has a slightly bitter nature, Williams says, this is a great way to have your maca and eat it too.

14. Eggs

Eggs are one of the most nutrient dense foods that exist, especially eggs from pastured hens. They are abundant in fertility-enhancing omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin E, and choline—a nutrient that helps fetal brain development. Eat 8-12 eggs per week to get enough choline in your diet, and if you can, get organic eggs from pastured hens.

15. Asparagus

Folic acid is critical for women who are trying to get pregnant and asparagus is full of it: One cup of asparagus gets you more than half of your daily recommended dose of folic acid, plus all your daily vitamin K. Asparagus also contains glutathione, an antioxidant which improves egg quality. So stock up on asparagus—and opt for fresh or frozen, if possible, since canned asparagus has a lot of sodium.

Watermelon is another solid source of glutathione. It’s also known to help alleviate morning sickness, heartburn, swelling, and even third-trimester cramps, so it’s a good thing to keep on your plate even after you get pregnant. Watermelon also helps male fertility, since it contains lycopen—an antioxidant that helps sperm motility.

17. Liver

Contrary to popular belief, liver is not the “toxic organ,” rather it is the “detoxifier.” The liver helps remove impurities from one’s system, but it does not hold onto those impurities. It can help women get pregnant because it’s an amazing source of folate (the active form of folic acid), all your B vitamins, choline and loads of antioxidants like inositol (which has been shown to improve egg quality in women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization procedures). Add three ounces of liver to your diet per week, or if you can’t imagine eating liver, you can take it as a supplement in a pill form.

18. Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil is technically an oil from fish, but it’s different from regular old fish oil. Both fish oil and cod liver oil are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids, however cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D, which are fat soluble vitamins important to fertility and conception. If you’re suffering from a vitamin D deficiency (and many people are), reach for cod liver oil instead of fish oil. You can take cod liver oil in capsule or liquid form daily—and be sure to take an amount that delivers 2,000 IUs of vitamin D.

19. Sunflower Seeds

Male fertility can get a boost from sunflower seeds, which are great for improving sperm motility and sperm count. It’s easy to get more in your diet—sprinkle sunflower seeds on salads or try a sunflower seed butter slathered on toast.

Katy Perry Is ‘Blooming,’ According to Orlando Bloom's Latest Tribute to His Pregnant Fiancé


Katy Perry’s fiancé Orlando Bloom showed the pregnant pop star and their baby-to-be some love on Instagram just days after the singer announced the couple is expecting their first child, via her music video for “Never Worn White.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star shared a gorgeous photo of Perry posing in a colourful dress at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 event in Australia, where she performed on March 7.

His sweet post marks the first time Bloom has spoken publicly since Perry confirmed the big news on March 4 in her new music video, debuting her growing belly in a stunning all-white ensemble.

She later told fans during an Instagram Live that she and the actor are “excited” about the baby, admitting, “It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I thought I would tell you guys in the best way through a piece of music.”

It was then Bloom’s turn to share his excitement over the news, captioning his sweet tribute, “My babies blooming ❤️.” Bloom also has a 9-year-old son, Flynn, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

We see what he did there and we appreciate it. This isn’t the first time the couple has used Bloom’s last name in a bit of cheeky wordplay. When they announced their engagement in February 2019, Perry captioned her Instagram post “full bloom,” which also referenced her flower-shaped ruby and diamond engagement ring.

Following the pregnancy announcement, the “Fireworks” singer also joked on Twitter that she’s “so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore… or carry around a big purse” to hid her baby bump before revealing that the baby was planned.

“Well, it wasn’t on accident,” Perry said in a new interview with SiriusXM’s Mikey Piff. “I’m so grateful for everything that I have been able to do and achieve and all the goals that I’ve been kind of able to check off my list and dreams and the life I’ve lived thus far, and I think I’ve just been trying to create this space in my own life where I’m not running myself too ragged and like, you know, creating space for something new to happen like this. And I think we were both looking forward to this new interval of life and sharing this, so, that’s kind of how it happens, you know?”

Honestly, I’m not seeing any of that friction Perry was talking about between these two.

The new decade has only just begun, and it’s already filled with so much happy news from celebrities expecting babies in 2020. If this year is anything like 2019, the Hollywood baby boom will keep going strong. America Ferrera ended the year with the announcement of her second child, while Michelle Williams kicked off the new one with a pregnancy, an engagement to Hamilton and Fosse/Verdon director Thomas Kail, and a major Golden Globes speech about women’s choices. Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny also announced in 2020 that she’s pregnant with her first child.

We can’t wait to see who else announces they are expecting new little bundles of joy as the year goes on. For now, though, here are all the pregnant celebrities and celebrities who are expecting that you’ll be hearing about in 2020. A big congratulations to all of them is in store.

‘I’m on Antidepressants—And I’m Pregnant’


Research on the subject has historically produced some scary findings. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the type of drug typically used to treat depression, have been associated with an increased risk of certain birth defects. But many of these older studies compared pregnant depressed women who are taking antidepressants to pregnant women with no history of depression, which is “like comparing apples and oranges,” says Pooja Lakshmin M.D., a perinatal psychiatrist and clinical assistant professor at the George Washington School of Medicine.

But newer studies are more nuanced, finally comparing the right control group—pregnant women with depression who take antidepressants vs. pregnant women dealing with untreated prenatal depression. In 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did a critical review of past studies and added new research. They found that while some antidepressants can up the risk of birth defects, the overall risk is “very low.”

On top of that, recent research has found that not treating depression during pregnancy can also be harmful. “People are so worried about harming the baby with meds. But if you have prenatal depression and you don’t treat it you can still cause harm,” says Dr. Lakshmin. “Either decision comes with a risk.”

Untreated prenatal depression actually mirrors some of the same risks previously thought to be associated with taking meds for depression, such as preeclampsia, low birth weight and preterm delivery. Additionally, untreated prenatal depression can limit a woman’s ability to self-care, eat well and keep up with doctor’s visits—all things which studies show to be disruptive to maternal bonding and potentially harmful to the baby for years to come. “Women with prenatal depression are at risk for future depressive episodes and a lot of research shows that their parenting skills are negatively impacted,” says Darius Tandon, Ph.D., a psychologist and principal investigator for multiple Mothers and Babies projects, an evidence-based program, which aims to prevent postpartum depression. “There is evidence of negative outcomes not only in the first year of life but persisting into toddlers and school-going age or even into adolescence.”

The Stigma of Being a Medicated Mom

The good news is that prenatal depression is very much treatable. The bad news is that many women forego treatment because they can’t get past the stigma of seeking help.

Congratulations are in order for Ashley Graham and her husband, Justin Ervin. The supermodel announced on Wednesday, August 14, that she is expecting her first child.

The fashion icon is also a fierce body-positivity activist, which will no-doubt play a role in how she approaches pregnancy. “I’m never going to be big enough, I’m never going to be small enough,” she told Glamour last fall. “I’m always going to be too loud, I’m always going to be too quiet; I’m never going to be good enough for anyone. So I might as well just stay in my own lane and be great enough for me.”

Anne Hathaway Just Revealed She's Pregnant With Her Second Child


Anne Hathaway has a baby on the way. The actress shared the exciting news Wednesday on Instagram, revealing to the world that she and her husband, Adam Shulman, are expecting three years after the birth of their first child, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman.

“It’s not for a movie,” Hathaway captioned a photo of her growing baby bump. She also hinted that this pregnancy hasn’t been so easy. “All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love,” she wrote.

Hathaway didn’t explain what her difficulties were specifically,, but she has been very willing to have honest discussions about motherhood. In 2017, she even advocated for paid parental leave at the United Nations, sharing how the experience of becoming a mom had been a transformative one that changed her priorities.

“”I remember I experienced a shift in consciousness that gave me the ability to maintain my love of career and also cherish something else, someone else, so much, much more,” she said. “Like so many parents, I wondered how I was going to balance my work with my new role as parent, and, in that moment, I remember that the statistic for the U.S.’s policy for maternity leave flashed through my mind.”

Speaking to Glamour last year, Anne Hathaway also opened up about how motherhood helped her come to terms with difficulties she faced in the past.

“How Johnny is going to feel about himself will have so much to do with how I feel about myself in front of him,” she said. “If I’m feeling insecure, I am very careful that I don’t show that. But I also work really hard to acknowledge that place, give room for that place, and then release myself from that place. I’m more loving now, and that includes toward myself.”
