Pet Foster – How to Foster a Pet During Coronavirus

“Animals provide invaluable comfort and companionship, especially during times of crisis,” says Matt Bershadker, President and CEO of the ASPCA, who adds that shelters are “desperate.”

That’s just what Elizabeth Kidd, a millennial in Boise, Idaho, found. She and her boyfriend adopted Watson, an eight-year-old mutt, from her local shelter on Thursday, March 19.

“I am super, super anxious,” Kidd tells Glamour. “A lot of my corona anxiety is because my entire family is in a really small town about three hours from Boise, and I won’t be able to see them until this is over. It is silly, but now I have a little family even though I can’t get to mine.”

Kidd says since getting Watson, she’s been less anxious. “He doesn’t particularly like us to be on our phones (because we can’t be petting him then!), so I read a lot less Twitter last night which was probably a good thing,” She says. “Plus he’s very, very cute.”

Courtney Hoskins, a single mom in Boulder, Colorado, thought she and her six-year-old could never love another dog the way they’d loved their puppy who died last summer, after suffering from kidney failure. But then her job transitioned to remote, at-home work, and she realized she was going to have to break the news to her son that his trampoline birthday party would likely have to be canceled. And so she reached out to her local shelter, RezDawg Rescue and brought home Mabel, a 12-week-old mix.

“You can’t check the news when you are playing tug-o-war with a little puppy!” Hoskins says. “She needs walks throughout the day and she helps us stick with a schedule. At night, we all watch TV together and cuddling with her as she sleeps in my arms is so soothing.”

Anyone who is thinking about adopting or fostering a pet from a local shelter “should reach out to that shelter immediately,” Bershadker says. In the meantime, let’s go through some FAQs—which of course stands for Furry Adorable Questions. (Yes, thanks for asking, quarantine is getting to me.)

Can pets get coronavirus?

According to the CDC, “At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19.” Ganzert jokes, “Only their unconditional love is contagious.”

What if I’m not ready to commit to a new pet?

You don’t need to. Freeing space, and in some cases evacuating every animal, is the top priority for shelters. Fostering—caring for an animal temporarily, rather than adopting—could save its life, says Brittany Feldman, the executive director of Shelter Chic, a foster-based rescue group in Brooklyn, New York. “There are shelters that have sometimes 200-plus dogs and 100 cats, and these animals need to be taken care of multiple times a day,” she says, adding that, generally, city shelters have mandates to euthanize animals if they become overrun. With employees and volunteers unable to come into work during the pandemic and more and more people surrendering their pets or putting off adoption to a later date, “it’s a real crisis.” Fostering right now can both save an animal and help keep workers and volunteers safe. “The fewer animals that are sitting in the shelter, the fewer staff need to be taking care of them,” Feldman says.

The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo Will Be Postponed Due to Coronavirus

After countless live events, concerts, and television productions have been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, the fate of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo has finally been revealed.

On Sunday, March 22, IOC President Thomas Bach said he was going to take the next four weeks to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to begin July 24, but had ruled out canceling the games. However, according to USA Today, the worldwide competition will be postponed, likely to 2021, with more information to come within the next four weeks.

On Monday morning, March 23, the German, Brazil, and Norway Olympic Committees had all publicly urged the IOC to postpone the Olympics. Meanwhile, President Trump planned to leave the decision to the prime minister of Japan. “We will be guided by the wishes of Prime Minister Abe of Japan, a great friend of the United States and a man who has done a magnificent job on the Olympic Venue, as to attending the Olympic Games in Japan,” he tweeted. “He will make the proper decision!”

By the afternoon, Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA Today Sports that the 2020 Olympics are going to be postponed, likely all the way to 2021, with the “details to be worked out in the next four weeks.”

“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.” USA Today reports that Pound says the IOC will announce its next steps soon.

“It will come in stages,” he said. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”

We will keep you updated with more details as they come in.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes Confirm They're Social Distancing Together During the Coronavirus Pandemic

In case you were wondering how Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes were spending time during the coronavirus outbreak, they’re social distancing together.

On Friday, March 20, The couple took to Instagram Live to perform for fans, joining the ranks of John Legend, Chris Martin, and Mandy Moore—all of whom have put on virtual shows to entertain the masses during this tough time. Cabello and Mendes sang some tunes for fans as part of Global Citizen’s “Together At Home” concert series, kicking off their set with a rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Kiss Me”.

They also took questions from commenters and made some suggestions about how people should be spending time while we’re all stuck at home. “I think everybody should start Harry Potter from top to end,” Mendes said. “That’s the way to go.”

“We started watching it yesterday. I knew everything about it, of course,” Cabello joked before admitting, “I didn’t really know much. He knows a lot about it.” This led to a conversation about which Hogwarts house they think the other would be assigned to. Mendes told his girlfriend he believed she would absolutely be Gryffindor. “Really? That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” she replied and revealed she thinks he would be assigned to the same house by the sorting hat.

The couple performed for about 24 minutes and did a number of their hits like “Havana”, “Lost in Japan”, and, of course, “Senorita.”

Cabello and Mendes have been friends for years, but only got romantically involved last year. “It’s so funny because when we first started going out it’s so weird… [dating] somebody who was your friend for a really long time,” Cabello told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show back in December. “The people around you already know them because you’ve known them for a long time, so it’s just like, ‘Now we kiss and hold hands.'”

How to Talk To Your Kids About Coronavirus

We’re all facing a new reality in the midst of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak: schools closed, businesses closed, and a whole lot of time spent at home. It’s hard for most adults to get their head around it let alone figure out how to talk to your kids about coronavirus.

“We are living in very difficult and strange times right now,” says Hillary Haarmann, a licensed clinical social worker and mom to a a daughter, 8, and son, 5. “Along with feeling so stressed, anxious, sad, confused and uncertain, we have to find a way to come together to support one another and be there for the people who need us.”

We asked for Haarmann’s advice as a therapist and mom for how to talk to your kids about coronavirus.

Take time for yourself

Like safety protocol on an airplane, it’s important to put on your own oxygen mask first. If you’re anxious and panicked about how you’ll handle working from home while juggling childcare and homeschooling for the foreseeable future (which is perfectly relatable), your kids will sense that unease. “We have to find a way to honor and respect our own feelings and give ourselves what we need so we can truly be there,” says Haarmann.

Have a drink with a friend over FaceTime, call your mom, meditate, prioritize your own sense of sanity and balance. “Once we can organize our own thoughts and feelings, we will be able to communicate in a calm and healthy way,” Haarmann says.

Keep a calm tone

“How you say something is just as important as what you say,” says Haarmann. Sticking to the facts with a reassuring voice will help you reduce any anxiety your kids might be feeling. “I recommend being short, sweet and to the point,” Haarmann says.

Be honest

The age of your kids will obviously affect how much you’ll want to share about what’s going on in the world. But regardless of age, Haarmann advises being honest and meeting them wherever they’re at. “When your kids ask you why we can’t go on a play date, be honest with them. Let them know we are trying to protect one another by not exposing one another to possible germs,” she says, adding to emphasize the things you can control.

Here’s an example of what you might say: “I know you are concerned for the people who are sick, but they are being treated by a doctor. You also are concerned about if you get it or if someone you loves gets the disease. We can focus on what we can control. Let’s wash our hands throughout the day and make safe, smart choices. By protecting ourselves, we are protecting other people. Let’s send them healing and positive vibes.”

Point out the positives

Try to end the conversation on a promising note. “It might seem like a long time, but we can focus on the moment and what we can control—this will not be forever,” says Haarmann. In the meantime, we can schedule time to see our friends virtually, plan fun things at home, and enjoy the rare moment where we don’t have to be anywhere.

Limit news

Depending on your kids’ age, you might also want to limit when you watch the news. “It’s a smart idea to be aware of what we are bringing into our homes,” says Haarmann. “I recommend limiting news, whether it’s through social media or TV—we want a safe, healthy environment for our kids.”

Keep talking

“It’s also important to let your child know that no matter what or when, they can always come to you for support or for answers,” says Haarmann. “You want them to be open and honest with you. Reassure them they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings—we are all together in this, supporting one another.”

Peter Weber’s Family Is Reportedly ‘Closer Than Ever’ During Coronavirus Isolation

While Tyler Cameron and Hannah Brown social distance together in Florida, The Bachelor’s Peter Weber is quarantining with his family—yes, even Barb.

I guess there’s no better time to bond with parents than after they publicly scold you on national TV for dating a girl they don’t like. Personally, if I was locked in with my parents barely a week after they actively clapped when my ex tore me a new one on live TV, there would be a lot of fighting involved. But, like Weber made clear in an Instagram Story last Friday, March 13, there’s no bad blood.

Rumors of a rift between Weber and his mom spread immediately after the After the Final Rose ceremony aired, with Chris Harrison confirming to Glamour that their relationship had been “damaged.” However, the pilot—who split from Madison Prewett just a few days later—shut down those theories on social media, by referring to the headlines as “fake news” and featuring his mom in a post.

Now, the family reportedly continues to hang out amid the coronavirus pandemic. “This time of quarantine is bringing the Weber family closer than ever before,” a source told Us Weekly on March 19. “They are using this time together to bond. During isolation, Peter and his family have been watching movies, playing board games, and cooking together.” Barb, is that you? Are you the source? (Kidding.)

Perhaps Barb is happy thanks to a recent report that her son and Prewett never technically dated after she left The Bachelor. “They were never really back together,” a source told People. “They just realized they couldn’t make it work.”

Meanwhile, the rest of Bachelor Nation has their own quarantine hangs going. Prewett recently spent a day playing board games and looking happy with Selena Gomez. Then, news surfaced that Peter Weber’s ex and former Bachelorette, Hannah Brown, flew to Jupiter, Florida to isolate herself with her season’s favorite contestant, Tyler Cameron. They’ve been TikToking ever since.

Honestly, all of these coronavirus quarantines sound much more active than mine.
