Kate Middleton and Prince William Just Made a Surprise, Rare TV Appearance—With Their Kids

Kate Middleton and Prince William just did something they normally don’t do: make a TV appearance. And with their kids—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—no less.

The Cambridges quickly popped up on BBC One’s Big Night In special Thursday night (April 23) to show their support of the carers working on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic. During the #ClapForOurCarers segment of the special, Middleton, Prince William, and their children applauded and smiled for the workers, as millions of people watched from home.

For those who don’t know, #ClapForOurCarers is a movement happening in the U.K. in which citizens literally applaud for the people putting themselves most at risk during the COVID-19 crisis to help others. Something similar is happening in New York City every evening at 7 P.M. ET: People open their doors and windows and clap for doctors, nurses, and other medical workers.

This surprise appearance comes on Prince Louis’s second birthday, which the Cambridges celebrated by posting some cute new pics of the little guy to Instagram. He’s becoming quite the little artist, huh?

Earlier this month, Kate Middleton and Prince William gave an interview to BBC where they talked about how the family is doing in quarantine. Prince William opened up about his father Prince Charles’s coronavirus diagnosis, specifically.

“I have to admit at first I was quite concerned,” he said. “He fits the profile of somebody at the age he’s at, which is, you know, fairly risky. And so I was a little bit worried. But my father has had many chest infections, colds, things like that over the years. And so, I thought to myself, If anybody is going to be able to beat this, it’s going to be him.”

He continued, “I think the hardest thing he found was having to stop and not being able to go and get a bit of fresh air and go for a walk. He’s a mad walker, just loves his walking, so I think he found it quite difficult. Especially, I think also with his mental health, being stuck inside and not being able to go for walks.”

Thankfully, Prince Charles is doing just fine now.

Dolly Parton Is Going to Start Reading Bedtime Stories to Kids Each Week on YouTube

National treasure Dolly Parton has found her own special way to give back during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The singer and philanthropist announced a new 10-week YouTube series called “Goodnight with Dolly,” where she will read bedtime stories to kids each week. Parton is a longtime literacy advocate, and this latest endeavor is an extension of her Imagination Library initiative, which has delivered over 130 million books to children over the years. “This 10-week series will focus on comforting and reassuring children during the shelter-in-place mandates,” the library said in a blog post on their website. “Dolly hopes these videos will provide a welcomed distraction during a time of unrest and also inspire a love of reading and books in the hearts of the children who see them.”

“This is something I have been wanting to do for quite a while, but the timing never felt quite right,” she said in the blog post. “I think it is pretty clear that now is the time to share a story and to share some love. It is an honor for me to share the incredible talent of these authors and illustrators. They make us smile, they make us laugh and they make us think.”

This Video of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Kids Clapping for Medical Employees Will Make Your Day

Kate Middleton and Prince William have been using their social media platforms to illuminate all the ways people can help the U.K. (and the world) fight the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, donating money and resources is essential and something everyone should try to do. And on top that, you can show your appreciation online for the medical employees working around the clock to keep everyone safe. One way people are doing this is by posting videos of themselves clapping and hashtagging #ClapForOurCarers. It’s a sweet, simple way to hat-tip the folks on the front lines of this crisis.

Middleton and Prince William got in on this on Thursday, March 26, posting a sweet video to Instagram of their children—Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte—clapping. They then specifically shouted out the U.K.’s publicly funded health care system, the National Health Service.

“To all the doctors, nurses, carers, GPs, pharmacists, volunteers and other NHS staff working tirelessly to help those affected by #COVID19: thank you.#ClapForOurCarers #ClapForCarers #ThankYouNHS #ClapForNHS,” the video’s caption reads.

See the adorable gesture for yourself, below:

The #ClapForOurCarers hashtag has completely swept the U.K. “Tonight I could hear 100’s of people in London clapping for our amazing NHS, the health and social workers and for every key worker putting their health at risk to provide vital services. There are countless heroes across the country, we’re grateful #ClapForNHS #ClapForOurCarers,” writer Tom Knight tweeted alongside a video of folks’ applause.

And here’s another powerful clip of #ClapForOurCarers in action:

Kate Middleton and Prince William actually visited the NHS last week. “The last few weeks, and more recent days have been understandably concerning with the continuing spread of coronavirus,” Prince William wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. “But it’s at times like this when we realise just how much the NHS represents the very best of our country and society–people from all backgrounds and walks of life with different experiences and skills, pulling together for the common good.”

Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, and Their Kids Are Filming Dance Videos to Pass the Time

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are just like us. They too are social distancing and staying at home to slow the spread of coronavirus. Naturally, they have a lot more time on their hands, and they’re spending some of it filming iconic dancing videos with their kids (Emme, Max, Natasha, and Ella).

Case in point: this new clip Rodriguez posted on Instagram of him, J. Lo, and the whole fam. “Worst to best ?❤️,” he wrote in the caption. He kicks things off and J.Lo, of course, is the encore. Watch the video for yourself, below:

Talent definitely seems to run in this family. Emme, whose father is superstar Marc Anthony, performed on stage with her mom during this year’s Super Bowl and blew everyone away with her voice and poise. Those pipes!

Earlier last week, Lopez posted a funny video of her son, Max, delivering drinks. “We can’t go out to any restaurants or anything but the service and entertainment here is pretty good…? #StaySafe #familytime,” she wrote on Instagram.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have not said anything yet about their upcoming wedding. (The couple announced their engagement in March 2019. They’ve been dating publicly since February 2017.) According to reports, they were set to wed this summer. But given the uncertainty of what the next few months will look like in the United States, it’s unclear at this point if the nuptials will be postponed

In the meantime, we are very much looking forward to more dance videos from this fun-loving family. Maybe J.Lo can post some tutorials of the dances from some of her most famous videos, like “Jenny From the Block.” #JLoChallenge, anyone? With all this time at home, I should be able to master at least one combination of choreography, right? Right?!

How to Talk To Your Kids About Coronavirus

We’re all facing a new reality in the midst of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak: schools closed, businesses closed, and a whole lot of time spent at home. It’s hard for most adults to get their head around it let alone figure out how to talk to your kids about coronavirus.

“We are living in very difficult and strange times right now,” says Hillary Haarmann, a licensed clinical social worker and mom to a a daughter, 8, and son, 5. “Along with feeling so stressed, anxious, sad, confused and uncertain, we have to find a way to come together to support one another and be there for the people who need us.”

We asked for Haarmann’s advice as a therapist and mom for how to talk to your kids about coronavirus.

Take time for yourself

Like safety protocol on an airplane, it’s important to put on your own oxygen mask first. If you’re anxious and panicked about how you’ll handle working from home while juggling childcare and homeschooling for the foreseeable future (which is perfectly relatable), your kids will sense that unease. “We have to find a way to honor and respect our own feelings and give ourselves what we need so we can truly be there,” says Haarmann.

Have a drink with a friend over FaceTime, call your mom, meditate, prioritize your own sense of sanity and balance. “Once we can organize our own thoughts and feelings, we will be able to communicate in a calm and healthy way,” Haarmann says.

Keep a calm tone

“How you say something is just as important as what you say,” says Haarmann. Sticking to the facts with a reassuring voice will help you reduce any anxiety your kids might be feeling. “I recommend being short, sweet and to the point,” Haarmann says.

Be honest

The age of your kids will obviously affect how much you’ll want to share about what’s going on in the world. But regardless of age, Haarmann advises being honest and meeting them wherever they’re at. “When your kids ask you why we can’t go on a play date, be honest with them. Let them know we are trying to protect one another by not exposing one another to possible germs,” she says, adding to emphasize the things you can control.

Here’s an example of what you might say: “I know you are concerned for the people who are sick, but they are being treated by a doctor. You also are concerned about if you get it or if someone you loves gets the disease. We can focus on what we can control. Let’s wash our hands throughout the day and make safe, smart choices. By protecting ourselves, we are protecting other people. Let’s send them healing and positive vibes.”

Point out the positives

Try to end the conversation on a promising note. “It might seem like a long time, but we can focus on the moment and what we can control—this will not be forever,” says Haarmann. In the meantime, we can schedule time to see our friends virtually, plan fun things at home, and enjoy the rare moment where we don’t have to be anywhere.

Limit news

Depending on your kids’ age, you might also want to limit when you watch the news. “It’s a smart idea to be aware of what we are bringing into our homes,” says Haarmann. “I recommend limiting news, whether it’s through social media or TV—we want a safe, healthy environment for our kids.”

Keep talking

“It’s also important to let your child know that no matter what or when, they can always come to you for support or for answers,” says Haarmann. “You want them to be open and honest with you. Reassure them they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings—we are all together in this, supporting one another.”
