Tiger King: Cardi B Wants to ‘Free’ Joe Exotic by Starting A GoFundMe

Everyone’s obsessed with Tiger King right now, especially Cardi B.

In fact, the rapper is very much team Joe Exotic after watching Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, the most-talked about new docuseries on Netflix.

The “Money” hitmaker has been serving up some amazing quarantine content, including her viewing of the bonkers seven-part series, which follows the story of the eccentric zoo-owner who was arrested and is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for two counts of murder for hire and other charges.

In a nutshell, Tiger King follows Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka Joe Exotic), an unregulated zoo owner in rural Oklahoma, and the story of his epic feud with Carole Baskin, the founder of Big Cat Rescue and animal-rights activist. Then, in a wild turn of events, Maldonado-Passage ends up in jail for allegedly hiring an assassin to murder Baskin (don’t worry, she’s alive and well).

On Thursday night, March 27, Cardi live-tweeted her binge and revealed that she doesn’t believe Maldonado-Passage should be in jail, despite his conviction. The rapper said she’s planning to set up a GoFundMe account to free him from prison. “He shall be free,” she wrote on Twitter.

“They did Joe so dirty over and over again,” the rapper added.

Cardi also isn’t the biggest fan of Baskin, like many viewers who couldn’t really tell the difference between Big Cat Rescue and the zoos she rallies against. She even asked her followers to respond with their thoughts. “Who you think is more wrong,” she asked. “Narcissist joe? Or Greedy Carol? And why?”

Cardi is obviously not the only celebrity who’s obsessed with Tiger King. Everyone from Jared Leto to Chrissy Teigen and Kim Kardashian cannot stop talking about the true-crime series. Leto even dressed up as Maldonado-Passage for his watch party and I’ll never recover.

Other stars, including Dax Shepard, hope to be cast in a future biopic or series based on Tiger King.

They may just get their chance. According to Deadline, Kate McKinnon is set to star and executive produce a limited TV series in development at UCP. Based on the podcast Joe Exotic: Tiger King, the miniseries will follow Baskin (McKinnon) in her quest to take down Maldonado-Passage.

It sounds like the purrrfect casting if you ask me. Hopefully, Cardi will make a cameo appearance.

Cardi B Turned Down the Super Bowl Halftime Show to Support Colin Kaepernick

Cardi B has confirmed she was invited to perform at the Super Bowl on Sunday but declined to “stand behind” ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

Though the “Bodak Yellow” rapper is featured on Maroon 5‘s “Girls Like You,” she says she won’t join them for their 2019 Super Bowl halftime performance because of how she feels about the NFL’s treatment of Kaepernick. In a new interview with the Associated Press, Cardi explained that she was torn about the decision but ultimately turned down the opportunity in order to support the former quarterback.

“My husband [Offset], he loves football,” Cardi told the AP. “It’s really hard for him. He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something. You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

She’s referring to Kaepernick being blacklisted by the NFL after taking a knee instead of standing during the national anthem as a way to peacefully raise awareness of police brutality and racial inequality. Since then, Kaepernick’s contract with the San Franciso 49ers expired and wasn’t renewed, leaving him without a job and no offers from other teams. Cardi B had previously vowed that she wouldn’t perform at the Super Bowl unless he got signed—and she’s kept her promise.

But some fans have called her out for agreeing to appear in a Super Bowl commercial for Pepsi and for performing at the Bud Light Super Bowl Muid Fest with Bruno Mars.

However, Cardi pointed out that her involvement doesn’t support the NFL.

“I hear people saying like ‘Oh, y’all are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but you’re doing all these parties. And it’s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all,” she said.

Cardi B's Political Views Could Teach Politicians and Pundits a Lot

The virtual applause was so loud our democratic institutions shook: In just under a week, Cardi B made an impassioned case to end the government shutdown, put Tomi Lahren in her place, performed onstage in a lime-green corset and no pants, and cemented her status as the moral compass that framers of the Constitution didn’t dare dream of.

At press time more than 73,000 people had signed an unofficial petition to have her give the rebuttal to the State of the Union.

It all started because Cardi doesn’t think people should have to work for free. Earlier this month the rapper turned to Instagram to deliver a rant in which she summed up the true viciousness of the government shutdown better than Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, and Chuck Todd combined. “This shit is crazy,” she said in the viral clip. “Like, our country is a hellhole right now, all for a fucking wall. And we really need to take this serious.”

Later, in a move from which elected officials and pundits alike could stand to learn, Cardi acknowledged that she didn’t have all the answers, but, she went on, “I feel like we need to take some action. I don’t know what type of action, bitch, because this is not what I do, but bitch, I’m scared.”

The short video was so electric it wasn’t just name-checked on prime-time news but debated in the most rarefied circles of Democratic Party leadership. In a back-and-forth on Twitter, Senators Brian Shatz and Chris Murphy discussed whether or not to retweet the clip. (Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also chimed in.) And this isn’t the first time senators have amplified her clarion calls to action. In April 2018 Senator Bernie Sanders opened a tweet with these immoral words: “Cardi B is right.”

What he said.

After weeks of gridlock and stalemate, it fell to Cardi to illuminate the harm the shutdown had done. Is it a coincidence that the shutdown ended just over a week later? OK, perhaps. But her impact is undeniable.

With that in mind, both Republicans and Democrats could stand to learn from, hm-hmm, the same woman who followed her shutdown address with a video about the desperate scourge of vagina wedgies. Here’s a breakdown of her most essential lessons.

Lesson #1: Give the people what they want.

Thanks to the partial shutdown and a host of Russia-related bad news, 57 percent of people now disapprove of Trump. (A new high—and low.) With her Instagram “address,” Cardi gave a voice to the frustration and anger that millions of Americans feel. People want to feel like they aren’t alone in their struggles and that those with more power and a bigger platform understand them. Cardi’s admission that she’s scared spoke to the precarious condition in which Americans find themselves. Her analysis of the literal state of the union was so direct and spot-on that Stephen Colbert proposed she give a televised response to Trump’s (still-unscheduled) State of the Union.

Elsewhere, representatives like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Senator Robert Torricelli amplified Cardi’s message online. In the age of the Twitter White House, representatives like Ocasio-Cortez in particular have won over Americans, showing that it’s possible to use social media to share actual information not just propaganda. And while they use decidedly different vocabulary to convey their ideas, both women have figured out a way to give the American public what they so desperately crave—realness and honesty.

Lesson #2: Stand up for yourself, especially when Tomi Lahren is involved.

Of course true innovators are always criticized in their time, and conservative media jumped at the chance to snub Cardi. Fox News host Stephanie Hamill dismissed her comments about the government shutdown by suggesting that the rapper’s music was not a source of female empowerment. Conservative political commentator Tomi Lahren also chimed in: “Looks like @iamcardib is the latest genius political mind to endorse the Democrats. HA! Keep it up, guys! #MAGA2020.”

Women Are Praising Cardi B for Breastfeeding in Her New Music Video

Some people may be starting to slow down as the holidays approach, but not Cardi B. The rapper has certainly had an eventful 2018, and it looks like next year will be just as big. This year along we saw her career continue to soar, complete with five Grammy nominations. She gave birth to an adorable baby, Kulture. But she also split from her husband of one year, Offset, and had that very public feud with Nicki Minaj.

But in true Cardi form, she’s sending 2018 off with a bang today, December 21, by releasing the highly-anticipated video for her hit single, “Money”. While the video has a lot going on—including nudity and dancing on poles—it does show one major nod to her current life as a new mom: breastfeeding. In multiple shots throughout the video, Cardi can be seen breastfeeding while looking as glamorous as ever.

Take a look:

And you can see more in the full video, below:

This is yet another fantastic step toward normalizing the (yes, very normal) practice of breastfeeding. (In similar news, actress Rachel McAdams wore breast pumps in a magazine cover shoot earlier this week.) It’s exciting to see Cardi put a positive message about breastfeeding out into the world, especially in the video for a song that references her career and daughter. Working mom or not, breastfeeding is a natural part of many mothers’ lives.

As with all things Cardi B, social media lit up with praise upon the video’s release. “Cardi B breastfeeding in her music video is so good for the culture (and Kulture),” one user wrote. “Deftly blending high fashion, sex work, and — yes — breastfeeding, Cardi B’s video for “Money” is the logical culmination of three decades of feminism in hip-hop,” wrote another. “Tbh the fact that @iamcardib shows that she can breastfeed and be a bad ass really just set the tone to normalize breastfeeding,” said a user. See more opinions here:

Well done, Cardi—we can’t wait to see what you bring us all in 2019.

Men Are Pressuring Cardi B to Forgive Offset—and It Needs to Stop

This past weekend, Cardi B should have been celebrating one of the biggest moments of her career: She’s the first woman ever to headline Rolling Loud, the largest hip-hop festival in the world.

Instead, her estranged husband, Offset, crashed her performance and begged her to take him back in front of thousands of people—but this literal public display of affection did not go well. Cardi was clearly uncomfortable in the moment, and later posted on social media to make it clear that she needs time and privacy. (Something Offset did not respect, FWIW.)

It was an understandable response given their relationship has been plagued by rumors of his infidelity since before the couple even married. And yet, rappers like T.I., 21 Savage, 50 Cent, and The Game have all taken it upon themselves to chime in on Cardi and Offset’s relationship, telling Cardi she should forgive her husband.

“Now, I don’t know all the dynamics between you two nor does anyone else on the Internet, but what I do know is you guys look great together,” The Game said on Instagram, according to Rolling Stone. “It’s only right you guys reunite immediately for the good of you guys family unit.”

“Take Offset back Cardi B,” T.I. wrote on social media. “Ain’t nobody perfect.” 50 Cent commented on a post of Cardi’s, telling her to go “home” to her ex. “No Divorce,” he added. “Ok chill out.”

Offset was the one who broke his vows, but somehow it’s up to Cardi to do the emotional labor of putting it back together? I call bullshit. His appearance at Rolling Loud was both unjustified and unwelcomed—and I’d go so far as to call it manipulative and toxic. By trying to publicly pressure Cardi into forgiveness, Offset’s shifted the focus from how he cheated to the extremes he’ll go to win back her love. But not only is this unfair to Cardi—the responsibility of their future now rests squarely on her shoulders—it’s potentially harmful to her career. After all, who will remember Cardi’s Rolling Loud performance as a historic moment for black women now?

I take issue with the (male) celebrities’ support for Offset because it speaks to how black women are often treated in relationships, and it reinforces the belief that we have to suffer if we want to be loved. The “ride or die” trope, which posits that women are supposed to stick by their significant other regardless of their behavior, has been prevalent in our culture for decades. Black women are never afforded to be anything but loyal in romantic relationships, while black men’s cheating is often considered a minor indiscretion or growing pain. Just look at Jay Z and Beyoncé: Lemonade is a powerful album about her anger over his infidelity, but she ultimately stands by her man; meanwhile, on 4:44 Jay Z offers up lyrics like, “I apologize, often womanize. Took for my child to be born [to] see through a woman’s eyes.”

Our entire existence is constantly being assessed by our proximity to men. When we wear too much makeup, we’re trying too hard to attract a partner. But if we don’t wear enough, we’ll never get one. When we want our partner to be ambitious, we’re a gold digger. When we distance ourselves from an unhealthy relationship, we’re selfish and destroying our family. This pattern is not just frustrating—it’s potentially dangerous. Take singer-songwriter Kehlani, who was accused of cheating on her boyfriend Kyrie Irving last year; the subsequent flood of social media was so horrible that she was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. In the U.S., black women face higher rates of domestic violence than white women.

The point is, whatever Cardi decides—whether it’s to leave Offset or to reconcile with him—that’s a decision she needs to make alone. She can’t pacify the court of public opinion, but she can declare her worth as a black woman.

Offset Crashed Cardi B's Headlining Set to Win Her Back, and It Did Not Work

Things got very awkward during Cardi B‘s headlining set on stage at the Rolling Loud festival in Los Angeles Saturday night: Her soon-to-be ex-husband, Offset, interrupted her performance in a very public way to ask her back. And—spoiler alert—she was not into it.

A quick catch-up: Earlier this month, Cardi B announced that she and Offset, who she’s been married to for a year and has a daughter with, were divorcing after rumors surfaced of his cheating. Offset doesn’t seem to be on board with the split, though, and has been posting on Instagram about how much he misses Cardi. He apparently decided to his “win Cardi back” mission to the next level with a grand gesture that seemed to seriously backfire.

During the rapper’s set at Rolling Loud in Los Angeles, Offset made a surprise appearance onstage with a massive sign that read “Take me back Cardi” in white and red roses.

He interrupted her show to tell her how badly he wanted to reconcile: “I just want to tell you I’m sorry, bruh,” Offset reportedly told her. “In person. In front of the world.”

She just sort of stood there looking (understandably) annoyed as hell.

Eventually, he walked offstage and she went on with her show.

Let’s just say fans weren’t impressed, with some drawing an apt parallel with an ex showing up unexpectedly at work and interrupting a meeting.

After the incident, Cardi posted to Instagram to thank her fans for their support and to clarify that she doesn’t want them attacking Offset in the wake of the event.

“Violating my baby’s father is not going to make me feel any better, because at the end of the day that’s still family,” she said. “Unfortunately, we’re going through things, and that’s not private, it became public. I just want things to die down, I just need time so we can see eye to eye…I can’t predict the future.”

She continued in a second post, “I’m not saying that I’m going to get back together with him, I just don’t like that bashing online thing.”

Cardi pointed to the recent example of Pete Davidson, who’s been dealing with hateful post-breakup trolls, as why this type of online bullying wasn’t OK, and noted that she didn’t want Offset to have to deal with those “nasty” feelings: “I know how painful it is when you have millions of people bashing you every single day.”

Cardi B, truly the queen.
