People Are Praising Netflix’s ‘Unbelievable’ for Starting Important Discussions About Sexual Assault

It seems like everyone is watching—and talking about—Netflix‘s Unbelievable. The series, based on a true story, centers on Marie (Kaitlyn Dever), a former foster teen who reports to local authorities that she was raped. But the officers, all men, don’t believe her story, citing inconsistencies in her statements. After several conversations, the cops essentially strong-arm Marie into saying she made the entire thing up. Her life unravels in the aftermath: Her friends disown her, she receives a demotion at work, and the city sues her for filing a false police report. But then, three years later, two female detectives (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) start looking into several rape cases similar to Marie’s story and deduce that the same man is committing these assaults.

The show isn’t easy to watch. It’s gritty, and graphic, and it can be triggering for people who have experienced sexual assault. But the response to it online is overwhelmingly positive: Many are praising the series for its nuanced depiction of what sexual assault survivors go through when reporting their cases. “This is literally why women struggle with admitting to being sexually assaulted because they’re forced to relive the moment 60+ times, and then poked and prodded at by our legal system,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“If you’re someone whose first response to a rape being reported is ‘but they could be faking it’ you should watch the series #Unbelievable and educate your spiteful selves,” tweeted someone else.

Other viewers are calling for female officers to handle female sexual assault cases after watching Unbelievable. The series does an excellent job at showing how empathetic Collette’s and Wever’s characters are toward the women they work with. The male officers who handle Marie’s case are cold and mechanical, and they have an obvious bias against her. “I just started watching #Unbelievable and I firmly believe that a rape victim (if female) should be interviewed by a woman detective,” one person tweeted.

Read some more reactions to Unbelievable, below.

The show is currently streaming on Netflix.

People Are Praising Nike for This Photo That Proudly Shows a Model's Underarm Hair

Nike became the latest company to embrace the pro-body-hair movement when it shared a new photo on Instagram this Wednesday. It’s a striking image of queer Nigerian-American model Annahstasia Enuke standing proudly with an arm over her head—a pose that reveals her underarm hair. The Instagram caption appropriately reads, “Big mood.”

While it’s the first time Nike has embraced natural body hair so publicly, they are definitely not the first company to do so. Last year, body-care brand Billie launched one of the first-ever razor ads that actually showed body hair, and several other brands have taken a more body-positive approach to going shave-free. Celebrities such as Rihanna and Janelle Monáe have also broken taboos and gotten comfortable showing off some stubble both in their art and in their personal lives on Instagram.

So, there’s definitely a precedent Nike is following. However, because pro-body hair attitudes are still evolving, the reaction Nike has been getting has been pretty divisive. Some people have been put off by the image, going as far as calling it “disgusting.”

“Like please don’t get me wrong I’m delighted that this woman is brave enough to go around like that… but that’s horrible,” one person commented on Instagram. Another wrote, “This is not freedom, this is not a type of ‘I love my body,’ this is bullshit, shave that shit.”

And yet, many others have hailed the move by Nike as an important gesture that allows women to be themselves. “We need more freedom in this world to do what we will with our bodies without someone trying to shame,” one commenter wrote, while a different person called the photo “beautiful on so many different levels.”

Someone else had this important reminder: “Body hair is natural, everyone has it.” As if any image of a male athlete ever got hate for armpit hair…

Women Are Praising Cardi B for Breastfeeding in Her New Music Video

Some people may be starting to slow down as the holidays approach, but not Cardi B. The rapper has certainly had an eventful 2018, and it looks like next year will be just as big. This year along we saw her career continue to soar, complete with five Grammy nominations. She gave birth to an adorable baby, Kulture. But she also split from her husband of one year, Offset, and had that very public feud with Nicki Minaj.

But in true Cardi form, she’s sending 2018 off with a bang today, December 21, by releasing the highly-anticipated video for her hit single, “Money”. While the video has a lot going on—including nudity and dancing on poles—it does show one major nod to her current life as a new mom: breastfeeding. In multiple shots throughout the video, Cardi can be seen breastfeeding while looking as glamorous as ever.

Take a look:

And you can see more in the full video, below:

This is yet another fantastic step toward normalizing the (yes, very normal) practice of breastfeeding. (In similar news, actress Rachel McAdams wore breast pumps in a magazine cover shoot earlier this week.) It’s exciting to see Cardi put a positive message about breastfeeding out into the world, especially in the video for a song that references her career and daughter. Working mom or not, breastfeeding is a natural part of many mothers’ lives.

As with all things Cardi B, social media lit up with praise upon the video’s release. “Cardi B breastfeeding in her music video is so good for the culture (and Kulture),” one user wrote. “Deftly blending high fashion, sex work, and — yes — breastfeeding, Cardi B’s video for “Money” is the logical culmination of three decades of feminism in hip-hop,” wrote another. “Tbh the fact that @iamcardib shows that she can breastfeed and be a bad ass really just set the tone to normalize breastfeeding,” said a user. See more opinions here:

Well done, Cardi—we can’t wait to see what you bring us all in 2019.

Twitter Is Really Praising Meghan Markle For Shutting Her Own Car Door

Meghan Markle is receiving so much love on the Internet right now for closing her own car door. No, I’m not kidding.

On Tuesday (September 25), the Duchess of Sussex attended her first-ever solo outing for the opening of the Oceania exhibit at the Royal Academy of Art in London and was captured on camera closing her own car door. This, it turns out, is apparently a really big deal. Upon arriving at the event, she exited her car, shook hands with one of the hosts, then turned around and, well, shut the door.

As with any time Markle does something “normal” (like straighten her hair), Twitter used the occasion to praise the newest member of the royal family for being just like the rest of commoners. “A princess who still takes the time to shut her car door. Well done Meghan!” wrote The Sun‘s royal correspondent Emily Andrews, along with a video of the occurrence. “First time I’ve seen an on-duty princess shut her own car door…” tweeted another user. Others took the opportunity to laud the duchess for how “humble” and “down to earth” she is, despite her new role in Kensington Palace.

To be clear, this isn’t even the first time Markle has shut her own car door since becoming a royal (not counting the approximate 200,000 times she likely also shut her own car door in her pre-duchess days). People notes that she also did the honors last week upon arriving at the launch of her Together: Our Community Cookbook.

Women Are Praising Rihanna for Creating a 'Universal Nude' Lip in Chocolate Brown

Rihanna and her team have proven time and time again that Fenty Beauty is here to shake up the beauty industry and push for more inclusivity. This time, the brand is taking on the idea of a “universal nude” by offering a new shade of its Stunna Lip Paint in a rich brown chocolate. Rihanna secretly wore the latest Stunna Lip Paint—which is called “Unveil”—at her Savage x Fenty fashion show during New York Fashion Week, and the brand took to social media on Friday to announce the addition: “@badgalriri tested SEVERAL shades before landing on this rich chocolate brown that looks good on EVERYBODY!”

“Get ready for this universal chocolate BO$$ nude, that comes in your favorite lip paint formula and dries in a soft-matte finish,” another Instagram caption reads. “One swipe of this liquid lip is enough to get you a long-lasting lip that’ll catch every eye!”

Soon after, women on Twitter were quick to note what this means for women of color and share their appreciation. “Rihanna dropped a ‘universal nude’ in a shade called ‘chocolate’. We are the Fenty default,” one fan wrote. “Never in my life have I been part of the standard or default. Rihanna really did that,” another praised.

As Glamour pointed out earlier this year, consumers have begun to demand a more inclusive selection of nude makeup. The popular social media hashtag #notmynude called out most “universal” shades for excluding women of color, an issue that Fenty Beauty has addressed since the company’s start. Fenty’s inaugural 40-shade foundation range earned the brand praise—not to mention Time magazine’s award for “Invention of the Year“—and led other brands to follow suit with inclusive shade ranges of their own.

Fans can get their hands on it themselves for $24 at Sephora and Fentybeauty.com.

Cast Members and Celebrities Are Praising the Decision to Cancel Roseanne

On Tuesday, May 29, ABC made the swift decision to cancel the Roseanne reboot after its star Rosanne Barr went on a racist Twitter rant that compared Valerie Jarrett, a former Barack Obama aide, to an ape.

In a statement, Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, wrote, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

The decision came just hours after Barr wrote in a now-deleted tweet, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” According to NBC News, the tweet is in reference to an online claim that Obama’s CIA spied on French presidential candidates. Barr’s tweet was in response to another Twitter user, who claimed Jarrett helped Obama “hide a lot.”

Following Barr’s tweet, several cast and crew members on Roseanne spoke out to denounce her words. Wanda Sykes, a consulting producer on the show, said in a tweet prior to the cancelation announcement, “I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC.”

Sara Gilbert, who played Barr’s daughter Darlene on the ABC sitcom and is a producer on the show, also wrote that Barr’s comments are “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”

Gilbert added, “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love — one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”

Emma Kenney, who played Darlene’s daughter on the show, wrote on Twitter, “I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable.”

Danny Zucker, who wrote for the first iteration of Roseanne, wrote, “I wrote on the original ‘Roseanne’ where we used to denounce nativism, racism & homophobia. Nauseating to see what she’s become. Looking forward to continue not watching this show.”

Other celebrities have tweeted out their support for the decision to cancel the show, including Minnie Driver, who currently stars in the network’s show Speechless. “So proud of @ABCNetwork for having the ethical compunction to cancel #Rosanne despite the show’s huge numbers,” she wrote on Twitter. “We too make a show about a middle class family, come and watch us instead #speechless.”

Dan Fogelman, the writer and producer of NBC’s This Is Us, also shared some praise for ABC’s decision on Twitter: “Good for you, ABC. We’re friends again.”

Shonda Rhimes tweeted a simple “thank you” to Dungey for the decision to drop the show.

Debra Messing, who is starring in a revival of Will And Grace on NBC, wrote, “I just heard #rosanne is cancelled. My reaction— tears. I am so relieved and grateful. The hate that has been spewing from those in Trump’s orbit has really taken a toll on all of our souls and psyches. I didn’t believe it would happen. I had lost faith. Thank you @abc.”

Actress Zoe Saldana tweeted her disgust with Barr’s statement, writing on social media, “Shame on you @therealroseanne and @ABCNetwork @RoseanneOnABC Not a single apology can get me to respect your despicable racist character. #EndRacism in #mainstream media NOW!!!”

Director Ava DuVernay praised Dungey for her decision, writing, “For the record, this is Channing Dungey. Sitting on top of your world like a Queen in full judgement of your garbage and taking it out.”
