10 Times Celebrity Moms Got Real About Breastfeeding

It’s unfortunate that in 2019, women are still being criticized about whether or not they choose to breastfeed their children—or even where they decide to do so. Feeding your child is a good thing! But when celebrity moms like Amy Schumer, Hilary Duff, Jessica Alba, and Khloé Kardashian publicly speak out about the struggles (and joys) of breastfeeding and pumping (or not), it helps to normalize the conversation for all women.

Below are some of the best quotes on the topic.

Amy Schumer

The comedian gave birth to her son, Gene Attell Fischer, in May. In true Schumer fashion, she was honest and hilarious about her pregnancy and breastfeeding. “Guys what are we doing tonight? #schumerpump #ootd @stassischroeder,” she captioned a photo of herself attached to a breast pump and jokingly tagging Stassi from Vanderpump Rules with her “outfit of the day.”

Jessica Alba

Alba, an actress and founder of The Honest Company, often shared photos of herself feeding her son, Hayes, everywhere from the boardroom to a Target dressing room. “I felt like he wanted to nurse 24/7, which was obviously really challenging when you’re trying to go back to work,” she told Motherly. “Also my milk supply was challenged with him. I felt like I had the most milk with Honor and then it got less with Haven and even less with Hayes. And so that was just tough for me.”

Rachel McAdams

The actress has been mostly private about the birth of her first child but she made headlines with a photo shoot for Girls. Girls. Girls. magazine where she wore Versace—and a breast pump. “Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding,” the magazine’s founder Claire Rothstein shared on Instagram. “We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about whose idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more. Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of.”

Hilary Duff

Duff recently opened up on social media about her decision to stop breastfeeding her daughter, Banks, after six months. “My goal was to get my little girl to six months and then decide if I (and her of course) wanted to keep going,” she wrote on Instagram. “Let me tell you. Pumping at work sucks. I had zero down time and am usually pumping in a hair and make up trailer while four hands work to get me ready for the next scene with lots of other people around. Even if I had the luxury to be in my own room, it’s not even considered a ‘break’ because you have to sit upright for the milk to flow into the bottles!”

While she was still breastfeeding, Duff recreated McAdams’ famous pumping shot.

Chrissy Teigen

“The feeding schedule surprised me a lot. If you kind of do the math, you’re kind of breastfeeding for 10 hours a day total,” Teigen said after her daughter, Luna, was born. “It’s very loving and sweet, but it’s not easy. They just use you for your milk and you just feel like you are just a cow all day. It’s hard to work your entire day around getting her the nourishment she needs because they are just little animals.”

Michelle Branch Shared a Sweet Photo of Herself Breastfeeding Her Son at Her Wedding

Over the weekend, singer Michelle Branch married the Black Keys’s Patrick Carney in New Orleans. (Fun fact: The couple chose the same venue, the Marigny Opera House, Solange Knowles used for her wedding to Alan Ferguson.)

But more than her nuptials, it’s a photo of Branch breastfeeding her and Carney’s son, Rhys, while wearing her gorgeous Temperley London wedding dress and lace veil that has people talking.

On Wednesday, April 24, the singer shared the photo (by photographer Katch Silva) on her Instagram with the caption, “A baby has to eat when a baby has to eat.”

It’s a sweet moment between a mother and her son (who was born last August)—and will hopefully help continue to de-stigmatize breastfeeding, in general. The comments section was quickly flooded with well-wishers. “And THIS is why women are amazing!! You’re a queen!” one wrote. “This is the best – I remember nursing my oldest daughter on my wedding day in my dress and being so worried about her spitting up on it. Congratulations!” said another. Of course, this is the Internet, so there were a few comments questioning whether or not there was alcohol in Branch’s glass. But luckily, those were few and far between.

And Branch isn’t alone with her baby’s mid-wedding feeding. In 2016, a Canadian bride went viral for breastfeeding her little girl in the middle of her wedding ceremony. That same year, another bride similarly shared a wedding photo of herself breastfeeding her little one. “It’s one of my favorite pictures from that day,” she wrote on Facebook. Looks like these brides can agree with Branch’s sentiment: “A baby has to eat when a baby has to eat.”

Congratulations to Branch and her family—and here’s to more women being unafraid to share their breastfeeding photos with the world.

Bekah Martinez's Breastfeeding Photo Brought Out The Mommy Shamers

Bachelor fan favorite Bekah Martinez is enjoying mom life after revealing late last year that she was pregnant with her first child. But on Tuesday she sent the Internet into a frenzy after posting a photo of herself breastfeeding while holding a glass of wine—something that had mommy shamers calling her out en masse, even though most medical experts agree that alcohol in careful moderation will not affect a baby while nursing.

To be clear, Martinez did make sure people knew she wasn’t breastfeeding and drinking at the same time. In the caption she wrote that she “was waiting patiently for her [daughter] to finish nursing before beginning my (single!) glass of wine :).”

That didn’t stop the torrent of angry comments: “Just stop breastfeeding [if] you can’t commit to your daughter,” one person said. Another piped in, “How stupid are you?”

Breastfeeding and drinking—as long as it’s in moderation—is fine according to most experts. The CDC says that while not drinking is the safest option, “generally, moderate alcohol consumption by a breastfeeding mother (up to one standard drink per day) is not known to be harmful to the infant, especially if the mother waits at least two hours after a single drink before nursing.” As some commenters pointed out, it doesn’t appear that Martinez was guzzling an entire bottle; she simply planned to have one glass after feeding her baby.

Martinez, who keeps things pretty personal, isn’t the only mom who has been questioned for her breastfeeding habits. The situation was pretty similar to one Jessie James Decker found herself tangled in last year; she laid down the law, telling mommy shamers she didn’t care what they thought.

Moments like these are indicative of a larger judgment that woman face when they become new moms or reveal that they’re expecting. Just this month a pregnant woman’s Reddit post went viral when she explained that a stranger at her local coffee shop grabbed a drink out of her hand and threw it in the trash, saying, “You can’t have it, you’re not allowed.”

Even when it’s well-intentioned, those who aren’t informed simply shouldn’t make comments, let alone decisions about women’s bodies. Period. (FYI, having a coffee while you’re pregnant isn’t harmful, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists—a.k.a. the people who are informed enough to make decisions about maternal health.) Just another reminder that mom shaming is rarely helpful or productive.

Actress Nikki Reed Gets Real About Breastfeeding Her 20-Month Old Daughter

Actress Nikki Reed welcomed her first child—a daughter named Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder—with husband Ian Somerhalder in July of 2017 and she’s been sharing motherhood moments on social media and beyond ever since. (Or at least since the couple unplugged for a month after Bodhi’s birth.) Like when she praised her husband for carrying around her breast pump at the Golden Globes.

Now, Reed is opening up about the fact that she is still breastfeeding her now 20-month old. “I often get asked how long I plan on breastfeeding. To be honest, I have no idea how long her and I will be on this journey together,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a sweet photo of her feeding Bodhi. ” I follow her lead, and she tells me exactly what she needs. At 20 months she is only just becoming interested in food.”

Breastfeeding, sadly, can still be a contentious subject—one which people, both mothers and those who are not mothers, have a lot of opinions about. While Reed goes on to talk about her own experience with her daughter and blended baby foods (she says Bodhi did not like them) before deciding to skip to finger foods, she isn’t preaching or screaming about what she thinks everyone else should be doing. She is simply sharing her own story—and that’s great and, frankly, refreshing.

“Right now thats where were [sic] at, still breastfeeding and skipping right to finger foods,” she continues. “Also, in case you need to hear it again because I definitely did, whatever you’re doing you are doing it right! Every baby is on their own path doing things when and how they need to, and our job is to trust our gut, talk to other mamas and just go with the flow!”

Less judgment and more sharing when it comes to breastfeeding sounds like a great plan to us.

Women Are Praising Cardi B for Breastfeeding in Her New Music Video

Some people may be starting to slow down as the holidays approach, but not Cardi B. The rapper has certainly had an eventful 2018, and it looks like next year will be just as big. This year along we saw her career continue to soar, complete with five Grammy nominations. She gave birth to an adorable baby, Kulture. But she also split from her husband of one year, Offset, and had that very public feud with Nicki Minaj.

But in true Cardi form, she’s sending 2018 off with a bang today, December 21, by releasing the highly-anticipated video for her hit single, “Money”. While the video has a lot going on—including nudity and dancing on poles—it does show one major nod to her current life as a new mom: breastfeeding. In multiple shots throughout the video, Cardi can be seen breastfeeding while looking as glamorous as ever.

Take a look:

And you can see more in the full video, below:

This is yet another fantastic step toward normalizing the (yes, very normal) practice of breastfeeding. (In similar news, actress Rachel McAdams wore breast pumps in a magazine cover shoot earlier this week.) It’s exciting to see Cardi put a positive message about breastfeeding out into the world, especially in the video for a song that references her career and daughter. Working mom or not, breastfeeding is a natural part of many mothers’ lives.

As with all things Cardi B, social media lit up with praise upon the video’s release. “Cardi B breastfeeding in her music video is so good for the culture (and Kulture),” one user wrote. “Deftly blending high fashion, sex work, and — yes — breastfeeding, Cardi B’s video for “Money” is the logical culmination of three decades of feminism in hip-hop,” wrote another. “Tbh the fact that @iamcardib shows that she can breastfeed and be a bad ass really just set the tone to normalize breastfeeding,” said a user. See more opinions here:

Well done, Cardi—we can’t wait to see what you bring us all in 2019.

Khloé Kardashian Just Opened Up About the Breastfeeding Problem No One Talks About

Khloé Kardashian has never been one to censor her speech. Known for her no-holds-barred approach to telling it like it is, the reality star has, on multiple occasions, used social media to call out naysayers and dish on some of the most intimate aspects of her life. As a new mom to baby True, the star has continued her social media candor, this week taking to Twitter to open up about her recent struggles with breastfeeding.

On Sunday, Kardashian replied to a Twitter user who asked the star if “it hurt breastfeeding?” In her response, Kardashian explained that after trying “for weeks and weeks,” she was unable to continue breastfeeding due to post-pregnancy stress. “I guess due to stress my milk was not coming in,” she explained. “I tried and I just couldn’t give her enough. So I had to go to formula.”

Khloé’s candor struck a nerve. Almost immediately responses began pouring in from women across the Twitter-verse with their own difficult breastfeeding stories to share.

Apparently this is pretty common—especially with first-time moms. “Stress reduces the production of oxytocin, which is essential for milk letdown,” Rallie McAllister, M.D., Nanobebe ambassador, says. “New moms tend to be more stressed in general and more stressed about breastfeeding in particular,” she explains. Translation: It’s not uncommon to end up in Kardashian’s situation.

As a lot of women on Twitter expressed, not being able to breastfeed can be emotionally charged. “I tried everything and couldn’t produce more than half an ounce. I felt like a failure,” one user wrote.

There are some ways to combat this post-natal lactation stress—Dr. McAllister suggests pumping between nursing sessions, drinking plenty of H2O, and getting lots of rest. But more importantly, new moms need the support to do what’s most comfortable for them, whether that’s breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a mixture of both. No matter what new moms choose, thanks to Khloé, there are more opportunities to open up about it.
