Jennifer Lopez Confirms She Paid Homage to 'Hustlers' During Her Super Bowl Performance

“That was my little nod to Hustlers,” Lopez confirmed to Fallon. “I was like, ‘I learned some pole things, lemme see what I could do, we can put it in there.'”

In addition to putting her hours learning to pole dance for the movie to use, she also wanted her performance to be a demonstration of power. “I just felt, again, like it was a very powerful move,” Lopez said. “It was like, ‘Look Ma, no hands!'”

Power moves weren’t limited to Lopez’s quick Hustlers call-out. She started her performance on top of a replica of the Empire State building to represent female power. “I wanted it to be like women were on top of the world, we’re on top of the world right now!” Lopez said. She added that she chose “Jenny From the Block” as her song for that moment because, “I’m a New York girl,” she added.

Lopez had a lot of choreography to pull off, but she told Fallon it didn’t faze her. “I’m good!” she said. “That’s what happens, right before you go on you start getting in the zone. That’s why I’m doing all of those crazy things and my face is like dead face, because you have to stay so calm.”

Even with her experience on the stage, pole dancing was a challenge for Lopez ahead of Hustlers. “That steel pole is unforgiving, and you just have to figure it out,” she said perviously. And on her YouTube channel last year, Lopez revealed that she trained for her Hustlers role with the help of an aerialist and practice poles installed in each of her homes.

Alex Rodriguez Surprised Jennifer Lopez With a Stripper-Themed Cake in Honor of 'Hustlers'


When it comes to power couples, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are definitely up there in the rankings. The two aren’t afraid to hide their feelings for each other, either—their Instagram and Twitter feeds basically consist of sweet moments and surprises they’ve shared with each other, plus plenty of evidence of A-Rod’s Instagram husband skills. They’re so close, in fact, they even dress alike—and have done practically since they started dating. Now, things seem to be leveling up along with their relationship status: The engaged couple took a moment on Friday (September 13) to celebrate J.Lo’s latest role in the Oscar-buzzy film Hustlers, released that day—and A-Rod had the cutest surprise for his wife-to-be.

J.Lo shared a few video clips on her Instagram Stories on Friday that captured her reaction to a stripper-themed cake A-Rod surprised her with in honor of her role—highly appropriate, considering the insanely hard pole-dancing scenes she absolutely nails in the film. It’s decked out with two (decorative, not actual) dancers, a few mini $100 bills, and a very casual “Congratulations on your movie!”

The sound doesn’t play in J.Lo’s Instagram Story below, but in the original version you can hear her freaking out about the cake: “Oh my god, look at this!” she says excitedly. There’s also a personal note from A-Rod that she pans to with the camera: “Baby, congratulations on Hustlers. So proud of you! Love hustling through life with you. Love, Macho,” it reads.

The celebration doesn’t end there, though: There was also a tray of cake pops and mini cupcakes, which everyone knows is the mark of a real party.

These two—always adorable. And there might be a few more reasons to celebrate come awards season: There’s a great cast (J.Lo, as well as Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, and Keke Palmer) in front of the camera, and Lorene Scafaria, a writer-director-producer triple threat, behind it—and critics are already loving it.

'Hustlers' Movie Reviews: Critics Are Already Calling It the Movie of the Year


If Hustlers arrived in theaters to lukewarm reviews, I’d probably still see it. After all, it’s based on a true story that’s inherently cinematic: A tale of New York City strippers who swindle Wall Street men out of their money after falling on hard times in the 2008 recession. On top of that, it features powerful leading women including Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lizzo, and Lili Reinhart in the cast.

Early reviews are putting any doubts about Hustlers‘s merit to rest. Critics don’t think Hustlers is merely “good”—they think it’s already an Oscars contender. Hustlers premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to rapturous reviews. Over on Twitter, #Hustlers was trending on Sunday, September 8, with hundreds of resoundingly positive comments. Ahead of its wide release in theaters, it has a 92% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Much of the praise for Hustlers is dedicated to Jennifer Lopez, who fronts the film as the ringleader Ramona. In fact, some reviewers say she could likely be in the running for her first Academy Award. Frankly, it’s thrilling to see a criminally underrated performer get her due from prestige film outlets. (Super Bowl planners, I hope you’ll finally give her that rumored half time show after this.)

Plus, early reviews suggest that Hustlers expertly examines the nuances of stripping as a profession. The women in the film aren’t one-dimensional objects dancing for patrons at a club: They’re entrepreneurs, parents, friends, and fully-realized women trying to make the most of their line of work. Much of that distinction was made possible by director Lorene Scarfaria, who adapted the film’s script from the New York story it’s based off of and hired consultants to advise on the film.

Hustlers wasn’t made in a vacuum; it’s the latest movie in a string of standout projects that are led and performed by women. And we need more women-led success stories like it in Hollywood. Women account for 51% of moviegoers, yet they’re 4% of directors and 15% of writers in the entire industry. In a world where some studios hold onto the belief that women can’t lead critical darlings or box office successes, it’s thrilling to see critics lending their support to a movie without a single leading man.
