Kate Middleton and Prince William Surprised Students and Teachers With a Sweet Video Call


These days, our news feeds are filled with sobering statistics and devastating on-the-ground stories from the frontline. Of course—there’s a global pandemic happening, and it’s important to know the facts and learn how to best keep ourselves and others safe. But life is all about balance, which means we need to see and hear heartwarming tales too. A delightful Hamilton reunion, Ina Garten’s wildly large cosmopolitan recipe, Lizzo’s failed attempts at making bougie coffee—these things spark joy. And Kate Middleton and Prince William are the latest public figures to do their part, surprising teachers and students in the U.K. with an endearing video call.

A recap of their check-in was posted to the Kensington Palace Instagram account on Wednesday, April 8. “Teachers across the UK are dedicating their time to keeping schools open for the children of key workers and vulnerable children,” the caption reads. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called teachers and school staff at Casterton Primary Academy to thank them for their hard work and dedication — and to wish the children a very Happy Easter.”

In the video, Kate and Will are at their most charming, praising the kids on their art skills, casually introducing themselves as “Catherine and William,” and openly regretting that they didn’t put on bunny ears for the occasion. At one point, Kate even teases William for eating the family’s stash of chocolate.

They do get sentimental as well, thanking the staff for their hard work taking care of the children of key workers. “All the parents who are key workers to know their children are…the normality is there for them and they’ve got the structure and they’ve got a safe place to be…so really, really well done to all of you,” Kate says to several of the school workers. “I know it’s not easy circumstances, but it’s fantastic.”

It’s rare to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this relatable and low-key. Now that I’ve had a taste, I want more. I mean, they haven’t even figured out their best Zoom angles!

People on Twitter seem to agree. “My heart is melting,” one user wrote. “This is why we love the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” another said. The best summary only took three words: “Simplicity. Sincerity. Efficiency.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Surprised a Couple Hiking in Canada and Took Their Picture


As royal fans know, Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and baby Archie spent the past six weeks chilling together as a family, away from the spotlight. Reports eventually emerged that they celebrated the holidays on Vancouver Island, where they were spotted jogging, taking hikes, and hanging around town.

But one couple got a major surprise when the royals happened upon them on a hike. Picture it: You’re in a gorgeous setting and bust out your selfie stick to try to take a photo, but you’re struggling to get the shot because selfie sticks can be annoying that way. A nice person walking by offers to take it for you—and it turns out that person is the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, with Prince Harry standing nearby. Reader, I would probably pass out, but Iliya Pavlovic and Asymina Kantorowicz kept it together and shared their story with CTV News Vancouver Island.

“We noticed a group was standing nearby and they had two dogs, one of which was approaching us,” Kantorowicz said. “She starts asking if we want her to take a photo for us. We said sure. I didn’t see who she was at that time.” But she did notice another former Suits star Abigail Spencer with the group, which should have been a sign as she’s a close friend of the duchess.

“I thought she [Markle] looked familiar, but didn’t think it could actually be her,” she added. But very quickly, the couple realized just who exactly had offered to take their photo. “I froze up. I actually couldn’t believe who it was. Then I looked over to the side, and that’s when I realized Prince Harry was standing there. I kept looking back and forth like, ‘Is this actually happening?'”

“In that moment the only thing I could think to say, ‘There’s only so much that selfie sticks can do,'” Kantorowicz said. “She laughed and responded with something like, ‘We’ll have to do better,’ and then Harry said, ‘No pressure.'” A “very friendly” Markle then took a few photos. “She handed the phone back and said, ‘Happy New Year!’ and we said, ‘Thanks and happy New Year!'” Kantorowicz said. “Then we kind of turned to each other laughed and said, ‘Did that just happen?’ I still can’t believe it. It feels like a dream.” The Sussexes and their crew then headed off about their day.

This is the second photo by Markle to make headlines during their trip. It was also confirmed that she took the adorable shot, above, of her husband and son, which was released on the Sussex Royal Instagram ahead of the new year.

Oh, how we love relatable royals.

Alex Rodriguez Surprised Jennifer Lopez With a Stripper-Themed Cake in Honor of 'Hustlers'


When it comes to power couples, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are definitely up there in the rankings. The two aren’t afraid to hide their feelings for each other, either—their Instagram and Twitter feeds basically consist of sweet moments and surprises they’ve shared with each other, plus plenty of evidence of A-Rod’s Instagram husband skills. They’re so close, in fact, they even dress alike—and have done practically since they started dating. Now, things seem to be leveling up along with their relationship status: The engaged couple took a moment on Friday (September 13) to celebrate J.Lo’s latest role in the Oscar-buzzy film Hustlers, released that day—and A-Rod had the cutest surprise for his wife-to-be.

J.Lo shared a few video clips on her Instagram Stories on Friday that captured her reaction to a stripper-themed cake A-Rod surprised her with in honor of her role—highly appropriate, considering the insanely hard pole-dancing scenes she absolutely nails in the film. It’s decked out with two (decorative, not actual) dancers, a few mini $100 bills, and a very casual “Congratulations on your movie!”

The sound doesn’t play in J.Lo’s Instagram Story below, but in the original version you can hear her freaking out about the cake: “Oh my god, look at this!” she says excitedly. There’s also a personal note from A-Rod that she pans to with the camera: “Baby, congratulations on Hustlers. So proud of you! Love hustling through life with you. Love, Macho,” it reads.

The celebration doesn’t end there, though: There was also a tray of cake pops and mini cupcakes, which everyone knows is the mark of a real party.

These two—always adorable. And there might be a few more reasons to celebrate come awards season: There’s a great cast (J.Lo, as well as Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, and Keke Palmer) in front of the camera, and Lorene Scafaria, a writer-director-producer triple threat, behind it—and critics are already loving it.

Kit Harington Was Just As Surprised About Jon Snow's Fate on Game of Thrones As You


This post contains spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones. Consider yourself warned.

It’s been three months since HBO aired the series finale of Game of Thrones and many people, including the show’s cast, are still processing the fates of their favorite characters.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kit Harington who played Jon Snow, finally reveals how he felt about the decision to have Jon kill his lover/aunt Daenarys (Emilia Clarke) after she went “mad” and unleashed dragon fire across huge swaths of King’s Landing.

Harington went into the final table read for season eight without having read the ending, with Clarke warning him that he was in for a surprise. “I didn’t realize what was going to happen the whole way through until maybe half a page before Jon kills Dany. I remember my mouth dropping open and looking across Emilia at the table, who was slowly nodding as I went, ‘No, no, no!'” he said. “It was a ‘holy f*ck’ moment, pardon my language. Jaw dropping. I was completely surprised by it, even though you can kind of see the path through the season of how it was getting there—and even the previous couple of seasons before that, once you can look back. But it was still a big shock to me.”

He says they shot the scene where Jon stabs Dany for almost three weeks, but that it was important to really get it right. And while Jon’s decision was a tough one, Harington saw the logic in his character’s choice. “But what it really comes down to, the real crux of it, is the decision is made when she puts it between her and his family,” he explained. “Jon essentially sees it as Daenerys or Sansa and Arya, and that makes his mind up for him. He choose blood over, well, his other blood. But he chooses the people he has grown up with, the people his roots are with, the North. That’s where his loyalties lie in the end. That’s when he puts the knife in.”

While many fans took issue with how the show ended, Harington disagrees.

“I loved it. When I read it [Jon leading the Free Folk back to the North], that bit really made me cry. What really made me cry was on the paper: ‘End of Game of Thrones,'” he said. “But as far as an ending for Jon Snow, this character that I loved for so many years and had grown so close to, and had meant so much to me … seeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with — the Free Folk — it felt to me like he was finally free. Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free. It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing [in killing Daenerys], as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released.”

Taylor Swift Surprised an Engaged Couple With an Acoustic Performance of 'King of My Heart'


Taylor Swift has a long history of going above and beyond for her fans. Remember that Christmas when she sent handwritten notes and personalized gifts to her Swifties? Or the house that she reportedly bought for a pregnant woman? Well, yesterday, February 23, the Reputation singer was at it again: This time, surprising a fan and his new fiancé at the couple’s engagement party.

Alex Goldschmidt and his new fiancé, Ross Girard, were celebrating their engagement at Sycamore Tavern in Hollywood when Goldschmidt instructed his friends and family to gather around for what the guests likely thought was just going to be a meaningful toast. “There was a person who is not here who sort of played a part in all of this,” Goldschmidt told his friends and family. “So I would like to welcome, and you to give a warm welcome to my friend Taylor.” And then, none other than T. Swift herself, wearing a navy floral dress, walked into the party with her guitar in hand.

Swift explained that Goldschmidt, who is an associate director at Digital Media Management, emailed her and told her that “King of My Heart” is very meaningful for him and his fiancé. “I haven’t been on tour for a while, but hopefully I’ll do alright,” Swift added before beginning an acoustic performance of the song. “So this is from Alex, but sung by me.”

The groom-to-be explained its meaning further on his Instagram account. “I decided to propose to Ross listening to this song in my car,” he wrote. “❤️ I can’t thank Taylor enough for wanting to help make this day so special. #RossAndAlexForever.”

Goldschmidt later shared more on Twitter, writing, “I have never felt so overwhelmed with love and exhaustion in my life. Thank you for all the messages. I can’t possibly respond to them all, but know that your love and support means the world to me. And holy shit, Taylor Swift is an angel who gives the best gifts.” Uh, that’s for sure.

Miley Cyrus Took Liam Hemsworth's Last Name, and Even He's Surprised


Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth quietly tied the knot at a private ceremony back in December. And even though things are already official, Hemsworth has revealed that Cyrus took his last name, surprising everyone—including him.

Hemsworth stopped by Live With Kelly and Ryan this week and received a quick congrats on married life. When Kelly Ripa started to ask about Cyrus, he adorably cut in and corrected her name, saying it’s “Miley Ray Hemsworth now, actually.” Immediately, the hosts leaned in for more answers and asked if the star had changed her name.

“She’ll still be obviously known as Miley Cyrus, but she did,” Hemsworth confirmed. “She took my name, which was great. I think that was honestly one of the best things about it. I didn’t ask her to take my name, and then she’s like, ‘No, of course I’ll take your name.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s awesome. That’s really good. Thank you.’”

Hemsworth shared that it’s become more normal to refer to Cyrus as his wife, saying that “it’s only been a month and a half or something, but the first couple of weeks was really fun to be wife and husband.” He also revealed that he has her in his phone as “Wife.”

That energy seems to be carrying over into public appearances as well. When Hemsworth received an award at the G’Day USA Gala last month, he was quick to call out his “beautiful wife” in his speech. Miley’s reaction, of course, was priceless.

On Live With Kelly and Ryan, Hemsworth also provided a few details about how they approached their intimate wedding in Nashville. The couple, who has been together on-and-off for about 10 years, made sure the celebration felt sweet and straightforward.

“We never wanted to do anything too extravagant or big… We find the whole thing kind of embarrassing. We know how we feel about each other, but we just wanted to do something simple and organic, just basically with immediate family. But it was a really nice day,” he said.

Since the big day, the newlyweds have piled on the PDA. On Hemsworth’s birthday, Cyrus wrote him a heartfelt public letter, and the two shared pictures of a lovely snowy vacation they took just after they tied the knot.

For now, the two are happy to keep things just the way they are—Cyrus recently clapped back on pregnancy rumors and cheerfully let everyone they’re simply excited for their new chapter together.
