'Riverdale' Season 3, Episode 1 Recap: I'm So Here for This Cult Plot

Something is happening on Riverdale this season that’s more exciting than Archie’s abs. No, I’m not talking about Cheryl and Toni’s relationship—though that’s amazing and deserves 20 minutes of screen time per episode, minimum—or anything to do with the Black Hood. (Spoiler alert: It’s Hal Cooper! Except not spoiler alert because even the most casual viewers called that back in November 2017.) I’m talking, of course, about the cult storyline teased during the season two finale. (Warning: Spoilers ahead.)

You remember it, right? Shaken up by the realization her husband is a masked murderer, Alice Cooper decides to meet Edgar Evernever, leader of “The Farm,” a spiritual group that her daughter Polly joined in the second season. We don’t know much about “The Farm,” except it more or less caused Polly to cut out Alice and Betty from her life completely. She returns to her mom and sister at the end of season two, though, to convince them to join “The Farm.”

And she’s halfway successful. In the season three premiere, we learn that Alice is all about “The Farm.” Her hair is different. She’s talking different. She even thinks it’s a good idea for Betty to burn her diaries because, according to Edgar, they’re keeping her in the past when she needs embrace the future. Betty’s attitude toward Polly, her mom, and “The Farm” can basically be summed up with this GIF:

All Betty wants to do is ride in Archie’s weird jalopy and swim in some dirty pond, but nope, Alice and Polly are determined to convert her to “The Farm.” They do a little digging and find out Betty’s been lying about seeing a therapist and is forging Adderall prescriptions (???) as a post-Black Hood coping mechanism. Obviously, Betty wants nothing to do with them when they confront her about this, so she storms off, makes out with Jughead a ton, and returns to the most bonkers scene in Riverdale history.

“The Farm” has convened in Betty’s backyard and is doing a seance that involves Alice dropping Polly’s twins in a fire. Betty then sees the twins shoot up in the air—as if they’re flying—before she collapses into a seizure. That’s literally how the episode ends. I know! What the hell? Was this real? Was it a hallucination?

“That is the exact question that Betty is trying to figure out in the second episode,” Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells Glamour about this jaw-dropping ending. “‘What did I see? What part of that is real? Was all of it real? Even if it was a hallucination, where did it come from? What caused the seizure?’ There’s so many things to unpack, and very soon other people are also seeing crazy things.”

“We love urban legends like the Slender Man and stuff like that, so we wanted to tell a really creepy and twisted cult or satanic murder story, so we did a lot of research about cults and we looked at a lot of stuff like that,” Aguirre-Sacasa says in regards to “The Farm’s” origin. “Season one we did a more traditional murder mystery, season two we did a more traditional serial killer, so [now] we wanted to do something a little darker and more twisted this season.”

If you’re thinking, “Wow, this sounds way more interesting than any time Jughead’s appeared on screen ever,” you’re exactly right. This cult plot line is, hands down, the greatest thing to happen to Riverdale since it made Cheryl an Olympic archer. The above synopsis is just a small taste of the true insanity that unfolds during the premiere.

If only the episode focused more on it. Unfortunately, we still have to put up with a storyline involving Jughead going across Ghoulie lines (groan) to rescue the Serpents’ dog . We also have to deal with his narration and the fact that he wears the same white tank top in basically every scene. Thankfully, the cult narrative is potent enough to make even the most ridiculous Jughead line bearable.

There are seriously so many directions this story can go. Alice and Polly could force Betty to join “The Farm” against her will, only for Shirtless Archie and Bow-and-Arrow Cheryl to rescue her. Or what if Betty puts on her black wig, murders Edgar, and Veronica helps her dispose of the body? And then Betty returns the favor by helping Veronica take out Hiram Lodge! Murder! It’s the bread and butter of Riverdale!

Actually, wait, I know exactly how this plot should unfold: Betty joins “The Farm,” likes it, and Cheryl has to come in with her vicious, vicious words and bring her back to reality. Just throw in Hot Sheriff Keller randomly lifting weights, and you have the best parts of Riverdale all in one narrative. Fingers crossed Jughead’s scowling plays second fiddle to this all season. It’s what we deserve.

Riverdale airs Wednesday nights at 8 P.M. ET on The CW.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse Just Got Hilariously Trolled by Their 'Riverdale' Costars

Just a few short days ago, Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse added more fuel to the are-they-or-aren’t-they dating fire when he posted an artistically topless Instagram photo of co-star and rumored girlfriend Lili Reinhart to his account in celebration of her birthday. “Both the birthday and the gift. My little muse, happy birthday my love,” he wrote in the caption. Reinhart seemed like she loved the picture—she dropped a heart emoji into the comments.

Although the photo was stunning, it also opened the rumored couple up to some pretty hilarious trolling by their friends and Riverdale costars.

On Friday, costar Casey Cott, who plays Kevin Keller, posted his own take on Sprouse’s birthday present—only this time it starred KJ Apa. Cott and Apa even used the same caption as Sprouse, writing, “Both the birthday and my gift. My little muse, have a good day my love.”

Thankfully, Reinhart found the entire thing to be hilarious, writing in a comment on Cott’s post, “Show me those nips.” (Apa also threw in a heart in the comments.)

Of course, she’d likely have to find this funny when you consider just how much her castmates love to poke fun at her and Sprouse on Instagram. In August, their other Riverdale pal Camila Mendes essentially confirmed their relationship by commenting on a meme saying “when you third wheel so much you basically become part of the relationship,” which was posted by the aggregated account, @MyTherapistSays. In the comments, Mendes said, ” @lilireinhart @colesprouse we’re such a cute couple.”

Though these coded messages could mean they are together, we might never know for sure: Reinhart has made it pretty clear in the past that her business isn’t open to everyone’s opinions.

“It’s horrifying how invested some people are in my love life. Emphasis on ‘my.’ It is mine. It is private,” she wrote on Tumblr. “If a stranger’s love life is causing you anger, frustration or anxiety…please reevaluate your priorities.”

As long as the cast keeps the Instagram hilarity going, Sprouse and Reinhart keeping their relationship status private is OK with us.

'Riverdale' Fans Think Lili Reinhart Just Confirmed She and Cole Sprouse Are Dating

Riverdale co-stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have a relationship as mysterious as their show’s twists and turns—and while it’s not for us to ask them to label it, rumors have swirled around them for months. Recently, they shared experienced July’s magical blood moon together. And a few months ago, they attended the Met Gala together, a debut fans interpreted as an indication of certain couple-status. Still, neither has spoken publicly about their personal life.

Until, as many think, Friday, when Reinhart posted an Instagram of Sprouse that involved the words “my love.”

“It seems as if the world would still be a stranger to me, if not for you. I’m so thankful that our paths intertwined to form this beautiful adventure~ Happy birthday, my love,” Reinhart captioned a picture of Sprouse in a gorgeous location.

Fans promptly freaked out. A selection of comments includes:

  • “can i like a photo 1000x bc wow. i cry. “my love” ?❤️”

  • “the whole riverdale fandom has officially died bc there [sic] dreams came true and cole and lili are an actual thing which we always knew was gonna happen??”

  • “Oh my god I’m crying again?????❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ you two are such precious gems???????????”

  • “OMGG @csandogirl they’re a thing wooo hooo”

  • “ohh my god this is too cute?❤️”

  • “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHGHHHGGH”

The couple’s Riverdale co-stars also chimed in, with Madelaine Petsch writing “F U C K this is cute” (fair) and Vanessa Morgan writing, “?❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️i love you guys”

Whispers that the on-and-off screen couple were together IRL began last summer with a spate of furtive hand-holding that lasted well into September, sparking some responses from Sprouse to questions about he and Reinhart’s status that only added fuel to the fire. In November, Sprouse said it was “sexier” to keep relationships private—shortly after Reinhart started wearing his clothes in public. Then, in January, the two took a getaway to Hawaii together. complete with some PDA.

Reinhart also posted a funny tweet to mark Sprouse’s birthday: “Happy birthday to the princess, and also to Meghan Markle.”

One day, perhaps we’ll get confirmation—this isn’t an explicit one—but until then, these two might just have an amazing thing going.

'Riverdale' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Warning: Riverdale spoilers ahead.

Riverdale season two ended on a rather bleak note. Archie’s been arrested for murder, a cult leader may be infiltrating the Cooper household, and the town of Riverdale is falling apart at the seams. It was a violent, dark, and, at times, scary season—and things are only going to get more intense from here. Not much is known about Riverdale season three right now, but the nuggets of info that are available suggest viewers are in for an even wilder ride than last season—as if that was possible. Here’s everything we know so far.

1. It will premiere October 9, 2018. This isn’t that surprising, seeing as how Riverdale season two premiered in October 2017. Production began this summer.

2. The first episode is titled “Labor Day.” Remember, Hiram’s framing Archie for the murder of Cassidy, the guy who attempted to rob Veronica’s lake house, so things kick off with drama in the courtroom.

3. Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz, will be a series regular. As will Charles Melton, who plays the arrogant jock Reggie. “Toni Topaz has been a breakout character for us since Jughead met her at Southside High—and that’s thanks to Vanessa Morgan’s fearless, winning performance,” Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said. “We’re thrilled that the adventures of this fan favorite will continue into season three. Long live Choni!”

4. Supporting characters will get more shine. “One idea is that we might shift the focus around on different characters, some of our supporting players as well to kind of tell a tapestry of what life is like when Riverdale is on the verge of becoming Sin City,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Deadline. “So keep an eye out on the supporting players like Cheryl and Tony and Kevin and Josie. They’re going to carry more story than they have in season one and season two.”

5. Season three will be different genre. “The writers room started last week—and the way that season one was a murder mystery and season two was a serial killer thriller and a mob in a small town, season three will also have a genre element. It’ll draw on the tradition of pulp and noir, but it will be different from the murder mystery and the serial killer and mafia story,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Glamour.

6. Jughead’s mom and sister could make an appearance. Finally! “I wouldn’t be surprised if they came to Riverdale bringing bad tidings for Jughead and Betty and FP and Alice,” Aguirre-Sacasa also told Deadline.

7. Polly’s farm (i.e., cult) will be explored. The season finale ended with Polly telling her mother a member from her farm is going to show up to the Cooper house and help them cope through Hal being the Black Hood. “We’ve been seeding the idea of the farm, and that the farm may not be as altruistic and as benevolent a place as Polly suggests. We might see a little bit of what the farm is and what it’s been like for Polly,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly.

8. Hiram’s going to be even more evil next season. Great. “He influenced Archie. He influenced Reggie. He capitalized on Veronica’s love for him. But he didn’t get down and dirty in the mud that much,” Aguirre-Sacasa said to EW.

9. Two new characters with sketchy intentions are coming. One is a Evelyn Evernever, a young woman in her late teens/early twenties who befriends Betty but maybe for bad reasons. The other is Evelyn’s father, Edgar, a “health guru” (read: farm cult leader).

10. We will learn Chic’s fate. The Black Hood chased him out of Riverdale, but we don’t know if he lived or died. “Yes. Chic’s out there, right? We don’t know if he died. Betty didn’t ask Hal. If he is alive, we don’t know where he is. We don’t know when he might come back. Yeah, he’s out there. I really like that actor, Hart [Denton], who played Chic,” Aguirre-Sacasa told EW. “Who knows, who knows?”

11. F.P. and Alice’s relationship will grow. “The F.P.-Alice story is something that is a long storyline for us, so expect more to come,” Aguirre-Sacasa said, according to Seventeen. However, it’s not going to be smooth sailing 100 percent. “The idea of F.P. and Alice getting together has really captured people’s imaginations, and it’s captured Madchen [Amick] and Skeet [Ulrich]’s imaginations as well. They obviously have incredible chemistry, as we’ve seen this season. The fact that they were married to other people was an obstacle; Hal is maybe no longer an obstacle, but I have to remind everyone that F.P. is married to Jughead’s mom. It’s not completely smooth sailing ahead,” he told Glamour.

12. The Black Hood is really gone. In the literal sense, at least. “The Black Hood, again, never say never, but for a little bit, we can rest easy that the Black Hood is not going to break into our houses. It doesn’t mean we should leave our doors unlocked, but I think we’re OK for that specific thread,” Aguirre-Sacasa told EW.

'Riverdale' Season 2, Episode 21 Recap: The Black Hood's Identity Is Revealed—For Real

After 20 episodes of agonizing half-reveals, we finally learned the real identity of the Black Hood on tonight’s Riverdale. The person behind the mask is either surprising or “duh,” depending on who you talk to. (In my mind, it’s a mix of both.) Here’s what happened:

The Black Hood’s knee-deep in committing his most heinous crime yet: attempting to murder our Lord and Savior Cheryl Blossom. Cheryl manages to escape Thistle House, though, and scare the Black Hood off with her bow-and-arrow skills because she’s Katniss Everdeen, apparently. Random, but I’m cool with it because I’m cool with everything Cheryl does. She could be the Black Hood and I’d suddenly say, “Yes! Burn Riverdale to the ground, queen!”

Meanwhile, Jughead and F.P. deliver a wounded but still alive Fangs to the hospital—and now Jughead’s thirsty for his shooter’s blood. I don’t care about this, but then again I’m slowly starting to realize the only thing I consistently care about on Riverdale is Cheryl Blossom.

Oh, and Betty! I love Betty now! Cheryl calls Betty to tell her she was just attacked by the Black Hood, and they have the most iconic exchange of dialogue. I honestly just need to drop it in here verbatim so you can appreciate it.

Cheryl: The Black Hood just attacked me at Thistle House.

Betty: Oh my God! Was it my dad?

Cheryl: Based on waistline alone, it could’ve been him, yes. Luckily, I was able to get to my archery set and hunting cape.

Betty: You didn’t kill him, did you?

Cheryl: No, I shot to wound: hit him in the right shoulder. He’s fled into the woods, where I plan to track him. Just in case he escapes my clutches, be forewarned: Now that he’s a maimed animal, he’s operating on instinct. Ready to lash out and kill anyone in his path…even his loved ones.

PHOTO: The CW

I don’t know what a “hunting cape” is, but I need one immediately.

Anyway, now Fred Andrews is in a tizzy because he thinks Archie was involved in Fangs’ shooting. He wasn’t—and neither was Reggie, for that matter. The Serpents think Reggie pulled the trigger, though, so now he’s hiding out and the Dark Circle is trying to find him. Blah! They’re all just a bunch of 17-year-old boys! Reggie calls Hiram Lodge, his new boss (LOL), to ask for help. Hiram literally hangs up on him and is beyond unhelpful, further proving Mark Consuelos is up to no good.

Update: It was Midge Klump’s mother who shot Fangs, which means this entire Serpent v. Jocks war is for naught. Groan. Hermione Lodge decides to capitalize on this by saying the Black Hood’s responsible for the shooting and offering a bounty on his head for $1 million. She also thinks Hiram’s keeping shit from her, which he obviously, 100 percent is.

Betty’s now obsessed with finding her dad (who’s maybe-probably-definitely the Black Hood) before anyone else does because there’s a million-dollar claim for his death. Two seconds ago, Betty was pissed at her dad, and now she’s trying to save him? I’m so confused. Give me more Cheryl with a bow-and-arrow, please.

“Luckily, I was able to get to my archery set and hunting cape.” — Cheryl, shaking Katniss Everdeen to her core

Oh shit: Betty gets call from F.P. saying that her dad was taken to the hospital and is bleeding a lot. This all but confirms he’s the one Cheryl shot with a bow and arrow, which means he’s the Black Hood. I feel so…neutral about this. Fans have been claiming this on Tumblr for eons.

Moving on: Veronica’s convinced Hiram and Hermione are going to use the $1 million she got from the St. Clairs for their bounty, so she breaks into Hiram’s office to get it back. That’s where she finds an envelope filled with pics of Hermione and Fred Andrews kissing and a note that says, “Fred Andrews Family Man Not So Innocent.” Is this supposed to imply something? Besides that Hiram’s a sketch-zilla, which we already knew?

The Serpent v. Jocks riot is seriously destroying Riverdale, literally. Jughead manages to calm down the Serpents once he tells them Midge Klump’s mother shot Fangs. However, now the town has more problems: The Ghoulies, another gang that was introduced episodes ago that we’re, I guess, supposed to remember, is back and fucking shit up. I can’t believe that teenagers are causing this much destruction.

F.P., Fred, and the salt-and-pepper snack Sheriff Keller (who’s no longer the sheriff but I’m calling him that anyway) scare off the Ghoulies, and Kevin Keller says, “Hot Riverdale dads to the rescue.” That’s an accurate statement, but also a little weird seeing as how one of those “Hot Riverdale dads” is his own dad!

Chapter Thirty-Four: Judgment Night

PHOTO: The CW

Remember those photos Veronica found of Fred and Hermione in Hiram’s office? They’re part of—surprise, surprise—Hiram’s larger plan to smear Fred’s campaign. However, the catch is making Hermione and Fred’s affair public would also damage Hermione, but Hermione’s blind to that. Wake up and smell the sociopath, girl! Kelly Ripa’s husband is loyal to no one but Kelly Ripa—and hair gel.

Betty goes to the hospital to see her father only to find out he murdered his doctor and escaped. She then gets a call from the Black Hood—cough, her dad, cough—saying she needs to come home now or he’ll kill her mom, Alice. WTF, Hal Cooper?

In a very creepy monologue, Hal Cooper admits to everything—to being the Black Hood, to killing everyone, to being a general psychopath. The reason why is complicated: Apparently, grandfather Cooper killed grandfather Blossom and assumed the Cooper name. Somehow, the Conway family found out about this, which is why Hal’s father killed them. Hal’s mother then told 8-year-old Hall to convince Svenson Cooper—the first ID’ed Black Hood—to accuse an innocent man of killing his family to save Hal’s dad. Hal’s mom told Hal that the Conways were sinners who deserved to die and that their town needs to do better. So when Betty said something similar at the Jubilee in season one, it triggered something in Hal to become the Black Hood. This is…Pretty Little Liars season seven-level complicated. Over it.

“Your father can’t do anything right. Not even be a serial killer.” — Alice Cooper, being so savage to the actual Black Hood

Alice manages to get Hal upset by saying he’s a “mama’s boy” who can’t do anything right. This causes him to start choking her, which Betty stops by knocking him out with a blunt object. Then, Alice starts beating on him. Eventually, Sheriff Keller comes and arrests Hal, hopefully putting an end to the Black Hood saga for good. My God, the Coopers need to calm down.

Actually, this whole episode needs to calm down. Archie and Fred come home, only to find another person dressed as the Black Hood (who’s not Hal Cooper) in their house. He attacks Archie, but Fred manages to knock him out. Then, this Black Hood impostor shoots Fred, which doesn’t matter because Fred’s conveniently wearing a bulletproof vest (???). So Archie goes charging after him.

Oh my God, I honestly can’t take any more violence in this episode. Remember Papa Poutine? The mobster whom Hiram’s people whacked? Well his vengeful son breaks into the Lodge condo and attempts to murder Veronica and Hermione. Hermione shoots him.

More evidence this episode is out of control: Penny Peabody, the “snake charmer” whom Jughead drove out of town, is also back and holding Toni Topaz hostage. She calls Jughead and demands him to come to her, or she’ll kill Toni. Why is Riverdale so aggressive tonight?

Jughead shows up, and it turns out Penny recruited the Ghoulies to be her backup, so now he’s insanely outnumbered. Except not really, because he brought CHERYL MARJORIE BLOSSOM (Toni Topaz’s girlfriend) and her bow and arrow to be his backup. Penny basically says she wants the Serpents out of the South Side by tonight, or else the Ghoilies will attack them in the morning. Cheryl’s bow and arrow is going to save everyone, though, I know it.

Chapter Thirty-Four: Judgment Night

PHOTO: The CW

Update: Fangs is now dead, and the Serpents vote to go to war with the Ghoulies even though they’re grossly unprepared. Jughead realizes Hiram’s the one behind all of this—of course he is!—and makes him a counteroffer to call off this “war.” He offers to give up himself to the Ghoulies in order to save the other Serpents from dying in a war tomorrow against them.

But his sacrifice was for nothing: The Ghoulies start beating the crap out of Jughead and say they’re still going to take out the Serpents (and Betty) the next day. This entire scene is basically the Asland sacrifice scene from Chronicles of Narnia, just with Cole Sprouse and leather jackets. Penny Peabody is no White Witch, though.

F.P., Betty, Archie, and the gang find Jughead…and he’s torn apart and bloodied-up. He’s unconscious. Maybe even dead. Yes, people: Jughead Jones might actually be dead.

Parting thoughts: This episode of Riverdale might’ve jumped the shark.
