A 'Riverdale' Spin-Off About Sabrina the Teenage Witch Is in the Works

PHOTO: Archie Comics/Everett

For months, fans have been speculating that Sabrina Spellman—Sabrina the Teenage Witch—would be entering the Riverdale universe soon, and they were right. Well, kinda. No, Sabrina isn’t joining Riverdale next season alongside Betty and Veronica, as far as we know, but a companion series about her is in the works at The CW.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Riverdale maestro Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is developing a new TV series titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina about everyone’s favorite witch. The show is still in its infancy, but Aguirre-Sacasa and company are eyeing for a potential 2018-2019 TV season launch. That’s honestly not too far away, so it’s safe to start getting excited about this!

If The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is green-lit, it won’t be anything like the beloved ’90s series starring your fave Melissa Joan Hart. It’ll be way darker, sticking closely to the Archie Comics series it’s based on, which deals more with evil forces and the occult. THR describes it as a mix between Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist—so, in other words, very scary. Something tells us a wisecracking cat named Salem isn’t a part of the equation.

It’s no surprise The CW is looking to tell more stories in the Archie Comics universe. Riverdale was such a runaway hit for the network, and since Aguirre-Sacasa is the chief creative officer at Archie Comics, he’s sitting on literally thousands of potential stories. “One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000-5,000 characters,” Aguirre-Sacasa told THR. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats … those are characters who can very easily support their own show. But we [also] have superheroes. So in success, yes, the goal is to expand that way.”

Get ready, Riverdale fans: Something wicked this way comes.

This 'Riverdale' Trailer Teases an Intense Shower Scene Between Archie and Veronica

We’re less than a month away before The CW’s hit show Riverdale returns for season two. The wait has been long, to say the least—season one ended in May—but fans have been doing a good job keeping themselves occupied with fan theories, cast news, and watching teasers on repeat. The first trailer, which dropped in July, alluded to a very steamy shower scene between Veronica and…someone. That someone was probably her boyfriend, Archie Andrews, but with this show anything can happen. Need we remind you of what happened to Clifford Blossom in season one? All we knew from that minute-long teaser was that Veronica wasn’t alone in the shower.

But now we know, definitively, who her partner is. Are you ready for this (very obvious) reveal? It’s Archie a.k.a Justin Gingerlake a.k.a Mr. Has a New Zealand Accent IRL! Yes, this hot couple apparently amps up their hotness even more with a naked romp in someone’s shower. I mean, hopefully it’s one of theirs; it’d be very strange, but funny, if they hopped into some random person’s house and decided to hook up in their shower.

If this trailer is any indication, Veronica and Archie’s relationship is stronger than ever. However, the same can’t be said for Betty and Jughead. Both the cast members and Riverdale‘s creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, have hinted that all is not well between the two characters, played by Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart (who may or may not be dating off-screen, too). Jughead’s move to the Southside of town—along with his relationship to the Southside Serpents—will reportedly put a strain on their puppy love. What this means for Jughead’s signature beanie is still undetermined.

Riverdale returns to The CW on October 11.

This 'Riverdale' Season 2 Trailer Might've Revealed a Major Spoiler

PHOTO: ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection

The first Riverdale season 2 trailer dropped a few weeks ago, and it was … confusing. It didn’t tell us anything about the plot at all. Jughead said some pretentious stuff about Archie’s “poker face;” Cheryl Blossom creepily stared at her badly-wounded mom; and Betty looked sad. That’s it. That’s all that happened—but fans still freaked out about it for weeks.

Which means they’re definitely going to flip over the new Riverdale promo that just dropped. It’s only 30 seconds long, but it’s packed with drama. Betty and her mother have a face-off! Archie and Veronica take a steamy shower together! F.P. is questioned by the police! (Remember, he’s still in jail even though he didn’t kill Jason Blossom.)

But the most noteworthy thing that happens in this promo is at the very beginning. In a very solemn voice, Sheriff Keller tells the crew, “May I have everyone’s attention? I have some tragic news to share.” This might be a leap, but does this confirm Archie’s dad, Fred, dies?

In the season one finale, Fred was shot by a masked man inside Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe, and a big question going into the second season is whether or not he lives. What other tragic news could Sheriff Keller be sharing besides Fred’s death?

Granted, this is just a theory. It’s totally possible he’s referring to another “tragic” event down the line—this is Riverdale, after all—or this could be some kind of nightmare Archie’s having. Also, I’m 99 percent sure that’s Fred’s voice we hear at the end of this teaser, so maybe that’s confirmation he actually lives?

Watch the trailer and decide for yourself, below:

We’ll find the answer out for sure when Riverdale‘s second season premieres October 11 on The CW.
