Lili Reinhart on Feeling ‘Insecure’ About Her Body Image on the Set of 'Riverdale'

Since making her debut as Betty Cooper in 2017, Lili Reinhart has used her following to increase awareness about body image and mental health—including her own struggles. So when a Riverdale fan recently asked the actress on Twitter what it’s like belonging to one of TV’s most “chiseled” casts, Reinhart’s answer was an honest reflection on how the show has impacted her body image.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, a Riverdale fan pressed Reinhart to address her role among her “chiseled” co-stars. Reinhart responded, explaining that acting on Riverdale has made her feel “intimidated” and “insecure” in her own skin.

“Actually, not everyone on this show is perfectly chiseled. And even I feel intimidated by the physique of my surrounding cast mates sometimes when I have to do bra/underwear scenes,” she said. “I’ve felt very insecure due to the expectation that people have for women on tv, what they should look like.”

But Reinhart is trying her best to leave those expectations behind her. She continued, “I have come to terms with my body and that I’m not the kind of person you would see walking on a runway during fashion week. I have bigger boobs, I have cellulite on my thighs/butt, and my stomach sticks out rather than curves in.”

In a profession where women’s bodies are often scrutinized, Reinhart added that she’s felt even more insecure in recent months due to weight gain caused by her depression. But not everyone has the same body shape or size—and Reinhart’s hoping she can remind fans of that despite her “daily” struggles with body image.

“This is still something I struggle with on a daily basis,” she wrote, “and it doesn’t help when I’m being compared to other women. I have gained weight due to depression the last two months and I’ve felt very insecure about it. But I did a recent bra and underwear scene and felt it was my obligation to be strong and show confidence in myself, looking as I do. And I want other young women to see my body on tv and feel comfort in the fact that I’m not a size 0. And I’m not a perfect hourglass shape.”

Hours later, Reinhart spoke out again when online commenters insinuated the experiences she shared about her body image weren’t authentic. “How sad is it that I come forward about my insecurities and people have the audacity to tell me that my feelings aren’t valid,” she tweeted. “People like this, the ones who leave these ignorant comments, are the reason why people don’t speak out and end up struggling alone.”

She elaborated about the post again on her Instagram stories. “Imagine telling someone that their feelings are irrelevant and they should be quiet based on what you deem to be acceptable or not. Can’t relate,” she wrote.

It’s going to take more than a few Internet trolls to silence Reinhart. From her appearance at Glamour‘s Women of the Year Summit in 2018 to her recent CoverGirl campaign, she’s used her time in the spotlight to address difficult-to-discuss issues like acne, body image, and anxiety. The reason? She wants to make those conversations more positive for future generations, including her own children.

“I think about when I have kids in the future,” Reinhart said in her Glamour WOTY Summit speech. “Will my daughter be self-conscious about gaining weight? Will she feel the need to explain her body or justify it to anyone as it changes? Will she feel that same need that I do now—to apologize to her peers and say, ‘My body doesn’t usually look like this,’ or ‘I’m just a little heavier than usual right now’? How utterly ridiculous is it that we even think about explaining the nature of our bodies to other people?”

Fans can expect to hear even more honestly from Reinhart when her debut poetry collection, Swimming Lessons, arrives in May.

Lili Reinhart Wants to End the Stigma Around Acne

What’s one beauty rule you think is BS?

I feel like “baking” your face with powder is kind of overrated. I think it’s just sort of adding product on your face that you don’t really need. I don’t like wearing a lot of product; I like keeping it very simple and clean. So, I’ve never been a huge fan of layering on a bunch of powder. Less is more sometimes. No, most of time!

Fill in the blank: “I love my hair…”

Healthy. I use a lot of Olaplex, which strengthens your hair in between highlighting sessions. I have to get my hair heat styled for work every day. But for my CoverGirl shoot, we’re showing my natural waves. It’s nice to bring out the diffuser and let my natural hair texture come out rather than blowing it dry and straightening it out.

You travel constantly. What city or country gives you the greatest beauty inspiration?

When I’m in L.A., I feel like I have the most creative freedom to go crazy with makeup and try bold looks. I think it’s a really golden place for people to be very exploratory with their makeup.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What are the three products you bring with you?

I would bring lip balm because I have to have lip balm with me literally everywhere I go. I use one by Hanalei. It’s made in Hawaii. I would also bring a moisturizer that has sunscreen in it. And probably a cheek stain that I could also use as a lip stain, like CoverGirl Clean Fresh Cream Blush. I love creamy products that you can use wherever.

What colors are you loving on your nails right now?

I actually don’t get my nails done very often. I rarely have polish on them; usually just nail strengthener. When I do paint my nails, they’re usually a very-nude pink. I think I would paint my nails more if I wasn’t on set so much and didn’t have to worry about continuity.

What’s your go-to getting ready music?

I really like Tame Impala. I listen to feel good and chill. I like to—how should I say this?—calmly jam out to music. That’s sort of the whole vibe of my life, calmly jamming out.

How much time do you spend getting ready?

I tend not to have a lot of patience when I’m getting ready. If I’m going to an event, I’ll probably start getting ready an hour before. But if I’m just going out for breakfast for the day, I can probably get ready in five minutes. I’m pretty quick.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse’s Relationship: A Complete Timeline

The minute Riverdale premiered on The CW in January 2017, its cast of young stars became tabloid fodder. In a matter of months, rumors starting swirling that maybe Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, who play Betty and Jughead on the hit show, were dating. That was later confirmed.

The two have remained fairly private over the course of their relationship. Nevertheless, here’s a complete timeline of everything we know about the couple, affectionately known as “Bughead” onscreen.

April 2017: Sprouse posts photos of Reinhart to Instagram but keeps quiet about the nature of their relationship.

July 2017: People reports that during an Entertainment Weekly party at Comic-Con, Reinhart was spotted wearing Sprouse’s jacket, sparking conversation. Later that month, the two were spotted showing some PDA on the Riverdale set in Vancouver. “Cole and Lili were holding hands and looked really coupley,” a source told Us Weekly. “Also, the way he grabbed her waist to bring her in for a photo seemed more than friendly.”

August 2017: Reinhart postS a very sweet message on Instagram for Sprouse’s birthday. “To the man who has showed me more beautiful places in this past year than I have ever seen in my whole life,” she wrote. “Happy birthday, Cole. Thank you for all of the adventures and here’s to many more ?”

November 2017: Sprouse reflects on being in the public eye but still gives up nothing on the pair’s offscreen relationship. “Lili and I are constantly talked about in the public eye, and for me I think that it is being deeply informed by the love of the characters and wanting to see us together,” he told People. “I think that in many ways it’s offensive and an invasion of privacy, but it’s also a badge of honor because it means you’re creating a chemistry onscreen that is so understandable that people want to see it in real life, which is flattering from a professional perspective.” He succinctly answered, “No comment” when asked if he and Reinhart are dating.

Cole Sprouse Just Gave the Best Response to Those Lili Reinhart Breakup Rumors

Riverdale stars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have been dodging breakup rumors for a few weeks now, sending people gentle reminders to stay out of their personal lives. But on Tuesday, August 6, Sprouse addressed those rumors straight-on and, without confirming or denying how true anything is, shared that he doesn’t take the chatter very seriously.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at Variety‘s Power of Young Hollywood event, Sprouse made light of the rumors. When ET asked him if they were annoying, he laughed and said “incredibly,” and then explained that he usually brushes them off.

“I don’t care. That’s the nature of our industry,” he said. “I think you have to poke fun of it a little bit. It’s kind of something you sign up for, but as long as can keep it light and fun, it’s all good.”

The couple previously poked fun at all the interest in their love life on Instagram. Next to a cover image that they appeared on together for W magazine, Reinhart wrote, “BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know shit.” She confused fans even more a few days later by publishing what she called a “sappy nighttime birthday poem” on social media, dedicated to Sprouse on his 27th birthday.

Then, after Variety posted a video promoting an interview with Sprouse, Reinhart commented, “Sources say he’s single now. Is he available?” She’s since deleted the comment. So what is the truth?!

Sprouse’s wisecracking has been a bit more indirect. “UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult,” he teased in a matching Instagram post with the W magazine cover. Despite all their jokes, though, it’s pretty clear the two of them just want to keep their relationship status to themselves.

Lili Reinhart Just Shut Down Breakup Rumors With Her Birthday Poem for Cole Sprouse

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse reportedly broke up this month after two years of dating—though the two quickly took to social media to troll the “sources” that put the story out there. And on Sunday (August 4), Reinhart posted a lovey-dovey poem she wrote for Sprouse in honor of the actor’s 27th birthday—seemingly single-handedly shutting down all those breakup rumors.

The Riverdale co-stars have a thing for social media public displays of affection, and it seems like they’re going to stick to their habits. On Sunday morning, Reinhart posted a photo of Sprouse wearing a hat and lounging around with a cigarette. She then included a sweet poem she wrote for him, joking that it was a “sappy nighttime birthday poem.” It goes:

“I tried to find a poem
that I could send to you.
Because my words were failing me.
But I searched and found nothing that did you justice.
All of these love poems can’t get it right.
No one else’s words could ever fit.
They haven’t known the fortune it is to love you.”

Judging by this, their joint W magazine cover, and how the two addressed the break-up news on Instagram, it seems like these two are still together (or had the world’s most amicable breakup). Over a photo of their joint W magazine last week, shortly after the rumors broke, Reinhart wrote, “BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know shit.” Sprouse later joked, “UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult.”

This might be as close as we get to confirmation, but until they explicitly say they’re still together, it’s a bit unclear exactly where they stand. Still, they’ve both stressed that what they really want is for some of the attention to be taken off of their romance. “We’re acknowledging that we’re in a relationship, but it’s a small part of who we are as people,” Reinhart said in the W magazine article. “We want our own separate identities.”

Here's Reportedly Why Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse Broke Up

Earlier this week, Riverdale fans were bummed to learn that Bughead is no longer—at least offscreen, after reports surfaced that [Lili Reinhart] (Betty) (https://www.glamour.com/about/lili-reinhart) and Cole Sprouse (Jughead) have reportedly broken up.

According to People, the couple’s friends “didn’t really expect them to last in the long-run.”

“At the end of the day, their personalities are very different and their lifestyles often clashed,” the magazine’s source continued. “Things have felt super heavy in the relationship for a while, and it got to be too much. They’re both very professional, though, and trying to be as amicable and friendly as possible.”

While neither Sprouse nor Reinhart has confirmed the breakup, news of the split broke over the weekend as the cast of Riverdale was making an appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego.

The couple has been together for nearly two years, and while there has been much interest—from fans and the media—about their relationship, both have tried to maintain a semblance of privacy. “Lili and I are constantly talked about in the public eye, and for me I think that it is being deeply informed by the love of the characters and wanting to see us together,” Sprouse told People in March 2018. “I think that in many ways it’s offensive and an invasion of privacy, but it’s also a badge of honor because it means you’re creating a chemistry onscreen that is so understandable that people want to see it in real life, which is flattering from a professional perspective. I just never talk about it because it’s not anyone’s right to know.”

”I’m not okay talking about my relationship,” Reinhart told Harper’s Bazaar last summer. “I’m not going to tell you my love story. That’s just not appropriate right now.”

Hey, at least Betty and Jughead are still together, right?
