A Major *Game of Thrones* Theory About Jon Snow Just Got Debunked

Last week, a Game of Thrones fan theory popped up online that was inspired by the show’s season eight teaser. If you haven’t watched it 2,000 times, like we have, here’s some quick context: Toward the end of the trailer, we see statues made in the likeness of Jon Snow, Sansa, and Arya, but there’s a catch. The Sansa and Arya figures portray the characters as they are now—young—while Jon’s depicts him as an older man. Some fans took this as a sign Arya and Sansa die early on in the season and Jon Snow is the only one who survives once everything concludes.

But not so fast. It turns out we can’t use this teaser to predict anything about season eight—because this footage doesn’t actually appear on the show. The Game of Thrones fan site Winter Is Coming unearthed an interview Sophie Turner did at New York Comic-Con from October 2018 where she confirms the statue promo has “nothing to do” with what happens in the final season.

“We did this promo for season eight where —I don’t know if I can say this, actually. Well, actually, no. It’s got nothing to do with the series; it’s just a promo,” she said. “It was this big kind of statue of me, of Sansa, and I wanted to have it in the garden of my new house. But they obviously wouldn’t ship it from Belfast to New York, so…”

It’s important to note that anything is still fair game with Game of Thrones season eight. Jon Snow could live, or he could die—and the same goes for Arya and Sansa. We just can’t look to this promo as an indicator of plot. Hopefully fans aren’t deceived by this, though. After all, it’s not uncommon for Game of Thrones teasers to have footage that isn’t used in their accompanying seasons. Remember the Long Walk trailer? That was all just a song and dance (…and walk).

Game of Thrones season eight premieres on April 14, so it’s not that long before we start getting some concrete answers.

Sophie Turner Wasn't Allowed to Wash Her Hair While Filming Game of Thrones

The hair sagas of the women of Westeros continue as Sophie Turner just revealed that she wasn’t allowed to wash her hair while filming certain seasons of Game of Thrones. And all this after the natural blond spent years alternating colors between her born-with-it shade and Sansa Stark’s eye-catching red.

During an interview with InStyle, the actress spilled her “dirty” secret. After being asked about how the men on the show were famously forbidden from washing their hair so it looked more in-character, Turner revealed this fun fact: “For the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl, but towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting. Now I wear I wig so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair.”

That sounds less than fun, but honestly it’s not the worst thing that’s happened to her poor head. “A few years ago I was trying to go back from red to blond, and it destroyed my hair to the point that I had to use a wig for Game of Thrones,” she told Glamour in November. “They wouldn’t let me dye it back red or my hair would’ve fallen out.”

Apparently, being on the biggest show is the world is a real detriment to the beauty routines of its female stars including Turner’s co-star Emilia Clarke, who chopped her hair short after damage inflicted while filming. “My hair was, like, dying!” she said last fall after chopping it into a pixie. “So I’ve cut it a little bit shorter. It’s almost the shortest it’s been. I’m honestly trying to grow out the blond, because it’s just killed my hair, and I miss having nice hair.”

Thankfully they’ve have adapted quite nicely—courtesy of some serious masking tips. “The biggest thing [to keeping my hair healthy] is WellaPlex,” Turner told Glamour. “It’s a hair mask that you put on, leave in for 10 minutes, and then wash out. It repairs the bonds in your hair so that it doesn’t just feel strong and healthy, it actually is stronger and healthier afterward. I use it every week, because with the job I have, it’s a lot of dyeing, straightening, curling, and heat damage. I’ll put in on after showering, watch a bit of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and then I go back and wash it off.”

And it definitely looks like it’s paying off.

Game of Thrones Fans Think Jon Snow's Statue in the Season 8 Trailer Reveals a Huge Clue

HBO dropped the first teaser for Game of Thrones season eight on Sunday night (January 13), and, as expected, fans are already excavating it for clues and hidden meanings. Of course, some of them are a stretch, but a few actually have merit—like a theory currently trending on Reddit about Jon Snow’s statue from the trailer.

For context, go back and watch the teaser for yourself, below, and pay close attention to the statues it reveals of Arya, Sansa, and Jon. Notice how Arya and Sansa’s figures portray them as they are now—young—but Jon’s depicts him as an older man. Some fans are taking this to mean that Jon Snow is the only one who survives when everything is said and done. That’s a bold conclusion, sure, but Game of Thrones is a bold show.

“For me this trailer solidifies Jon as the main protagonist of the story,” one Redditor writes. “Whatever the ending is going to be, it’s going to be about Jon. He will be the hero, the ruler; he will defeat the Night King and save the realm. He’s not going to die, unless it’s as a final sacrifice.”

Others, however, think people may be reading too much into this. One fan points to a similar death theory that popped up in season six but never panned out. “Remember season six promos with all the faces of the lead actors in the hall of the Many Faced God? Everyone had theories on which one was gonna die, none of those characters died in that season,” they write. Good point!

There’s also another big Easter egg in this trailer: the frozen feather that falls when Jon passes the remains of his late mother, Lyanna. For context: The audience knows Lyanna is Jon’s mom, but he doesn’t. As this happens, we hear Lyanna’s voice faintly say, “You have to protect him.” “Him” is referring to Jon, who is the true heir to the Iron Throne. He just doesn’t know it yet. (Sansa put this exact feather on Lyanna’s statue back in season five.)

There’s so much going on in this trailer! Catch fans coming up with 500 more theories from it between now and when season eight premieres on April 14.

Game of Thrones Season 8: Everything We Know So Far

Every day, it seems like another headline about Game of Thrones season eight goes viral, but here’s the thing: Even with so much chatter, we still don’t know much. A lot of what’s out there now is conjecture, rumors, and speculation. It’s basically the cast members saying what they think or hope happens next season, but nothing is really concrete. HBO is doing an excellent job at creating buzz around the show without revealing anything—not that Game of Thrones needs promotion.

That being said, there are some things about Game of Thrones season eight that we do know for sure. It should hold you over until the series finally premieres…in April 2019. OK, so maybe it won’t do that, but it’ll scratch your GoT itch for today, at least.

First up is the series trailer, which HBO just revealed. Take a look:

Here’s everything else we know (we’ll update this post as more facts come in):

1. It’s premiering April 14, 2019. And, yes, this is the final season.

2. It’s only going to be six episodes long. However, TV Guide reports these episodes will be longer, maybe even feature length. Two-hour GoT episodes? Sign me up. All of the scripts are written and the directors (which include David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik) are in place. Each episode is reportedly “monumental.” (With a $15 million per-episode budget, they better be.)

3. Cersei Lannister is probably going to die. She’s morphed into the full-on antagonist of the series, which means she’ll most likely meet her demise as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen rise to more power. Lena Headey even suggested this in a recent interview with Time magazine. In fact, she assumed her character would die by the end of season seven. “I was really in shock [when I found out I lived],” she said. “I think obviously, now, there’s got to be some body count at the end of [season] eight.”

4. They shot multiple finales. In an attempt to keep the press from leaking the show’s ending. Smart move, HBO.

5. Two new child characters will appear in the final season. According to TV Guide, one is a Northern girl and the other is a boy who’s only described as coming from a poor family. How they’ll each play into the story line is unknown at this time.

6. The cast apparently didn’t even get scripts for the episodes. Instead, they were reportedly fed lines through an earpiece. Producers hope this would prevent scripts from being leaked. In light of the HBO hack from last year, we understand why they’re taking such precautions.

7. Sansa will face a big challenge next season. “There’s a new threat, and all of a sudden she finds herself somewhat back in the deep end,” Sophie Turner told Variety. “And without Littlefinger, it’s a test for her of whether she can get through it. It’s a big challenge for her, without this master manipulator having her back. This season is more a passionate fight for her than a political, manipulative kind of fight.”

Emilia Clarke Got Literally the Most Perfect *Game of Thrones* Tattoo

Game of Thrones may be ending next year, but thanks to some new body art, Emilia Clarke will be the Mother of Dragons for life.

The actor showed off some new ink on Instagram Thursday (September 20), which features three small black dragon shapes flying up her wrist toward her hand. “MOD 4 LYFE!!!!” she wrote, referring to her status as mom to her scaly TV children. “@dr_woo_ made sure this mamma ain’t NEVER forgetting her babies….” In the photo, she’s grinning ear to ear, and looks like she couldn’t be happier about her tiny tattoos.

Game of Thrones fans probably knew this tattoo was coming. In May, she told Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa that she was planning on getting a tattoo when the show was over. “I’m going to get a dragon right here kind of flying away,” she said, pointing at her wrist. “So I think that’s cool. A little kind of peace out.”

She further celebrated her departure from Westeros by chopping the “burnt-out Mother of Dragons split ends” off her hair. (So, in other words, a breakup cut, but with a TV show instead of a significant other.)

Clarke isn’t the only one to commemorate her turn on the show with a permanent souvenir. In 2016, onscreen sisters Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams got the numbers “07.08.09” tattooed on their forearms to commemorate the day they both found out they’d been cast on the series. Williams also has the phrase “no one” inked onto her body, likely referencing the time in season six when one of the Faceless Men, Jaqen H’ghar, told her, “A girl is no one.” For her part, Turner has a photo of a direwolf on her inner arm with the phrase, “The pack survives.”

Thanks to their epic body art, this “pack” will clearly survive long after the last episode airs.

Sophie Turner May Have Just Spoiled the Game of Thrones Ending With Her New Tattoo

It’s a fairly common practice these days for actors to commemorate wrapping a film or TV series by getting a tattoo inspired by their character or their time on set, and the Game of Thrones cast is no different. Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams already got matching tattoos in 2016 in honor of the day they both found out they’d been cast on the show, and Emilia Clarke recently shared her upcoming plans to get a dragon tattoo to pay tribute to Daenerys Targaryen. But it’s Turner’s newest piece of GoT–themed ink that has fans sounding the alarm and worrying she may have just spoiled the show’s ending.

Australian tattoo artist Lauren Winzer posted a photo on Instagram of Turner’s forearm inked with a new direwolf tattoo that says “the pack survives.” “Thank you so much for getting this from me @sophiet ! bad ass !” Winzer captioned the post, tagging Turner in the pic for good measure.

Though Winzer uploaded the photo last Saturday, it wasn’t until several days later that it caught the attention of GoT fans around the world. Beginning on Wednesday (June 13), the post was flooded with comments from fans anxiously wondering whether the tattoo implies the remaining members of the Stark family, whose emblem is the direwolf and which includes Turner’s character, Sansa Stark, will survive season eight, which doesn’t air until 2019. “Is this a spoiler?” one Instagram user commented, as countless others echoed the question. “A Time for Wolves! The Starklings survive!” another wrote.

A few Twitter users also speculated about the tattoo’s meaning, with one referencing an interview Turner gave E! News in 2016, shortly after she and Williams first got their matching ink. “With Thrones, we were like, if we make it all the way through, hopefully we could all get a matching wolf, but we don’t know if we’re going to make it, so Maisie and I were like, ‘Let’s get this before anyone kills us.'” So this new could tat just be the one Turner’s been dreaming of for years.

The words “the pack survives” have been a running theme throughout the series’ seven seasons. “When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives,” Sansa’s father Nedd said in season one, and Sansa herself repeated the line in the seventh season. Though Turner has shared she already knows Sansa’s ultimate fate, HBO is extremely protective of GoT spoilers. So it seems unlikely she’d be allowed to get the tattoo if it was a spoiler. Either way, we’ll have to wait until season eight premieres sometime next year to learn who survives the titular game of thrones.
