Grey's Anatomy Finally Revealed What Happened to Alex Karev—and It's Major

Warning: Major Grey’s Anatomy spoilers ahead.

Grey’s Anatomy fans were shocked earlier this year when it was announced that Justin Chambers, one of the show’s original cast members, would be leaving his role in the middle of the current season. In fact, once we learned the news, his final episode had already aired.

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers (a.k.a Alex Karev) said. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

What would become of Alex Karev? How would the show handle a pivotal character’s seemingly sudden departure? Of the original group of surgical interns we first met back in 2005, only Karev and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) remained—along with two of their mentors, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.). This being Grey’s Anatomy, really any plot twist was on the table, including an offscreen death, which many fans feared.

But Grey’s had a happier ending in mind, or at least some longtime fans will see it that way. We learned last week that Karev was not actually taking care of his sick mother, as he had told Meredith and his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington). Nope, he was actually reunited with none other than his long lost love and first wife, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).

We learned all of this by way of letters Karev sent to Meredith, Bailey, and Jo. He revealed that he called Izzie when he was rallying the troops to help save Meredith’s medical license earlier this season. (After surviving cancer, Izzie left Alex heartbroken and ran off to parts unknown in season six. He eventually married Jo.) They got to talking, and Izzie told him she had used the embryos they created during her cancer battle and given birth to twins, Eli and Alexis. The couple rekindled their relationship and he moved to Kansas to be with Izzie and raise their children. ‘I’m finally exactly where I should be. I never had that before,” Karev wrote, talking about giving his children the stable childhood and family he never had.

With Miss Universe's Win, Black Women Hold Every Major Pageant Title in the World Right Now

Pageants often get a bad rap for being regressive leftovers from a different time. While some of that criticism is fair, the organizations that run them have made changes in recent years to become more modern. (Case and point: the elimination of the swimsuit competition at Miss America.) And there’s no question that their reach is still enormous, with competitions running in all 50 states and in countries around the world.

Now, for the first time ever, all four major pageant titles—Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe—are held by black women. Last night, the newly-crowned Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa, joined Miss America Nia Franklin, Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, and Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris to become the fourth black woman to currently wear a major pageant crown.

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful,” Tunzi said, according to the BBC. “I think that it is time that that stops today.”

“It is important to little brown and black girls to see three strong figures, three strong women, African-American women that are doing so much great work,” Ms. Franklin told the New York Times in May. “People will argue that race doesn’t matter. But race does matter in America, because of the history, because of slavery.”

“Nia, Cheslie, and Kaliegh: you are trailblazers, creating your own path on your own terms. Congratulations,” Senator Kamala Harris tweeted in May. Now, Tunzi joins the group (defeating Kryst).

None of the women are the first black woman to wear their particular crown. Vanessa Williams was the first black Miss America in 1984; Carole Gist won Miss USA in 1990; Janel Bishop won Miss Teen USA in 1991; and Janelle Commissiong was crowned Miss Universe in 1977. But on social media, enthusiasm for this particular clean sweep was undeniable.

Even Oprah weighed in, tweeting, “Congratulations Miss South Africa, the new Miss Universe @zozitunzi! Agree with you…leadership is the most powerful thing we should be teaching young women today. We welcome your visit to #OWLAG, our Leadership Academy for Girls ??????.”

The significance of all four women wearing the crowns at the same time was also a much-discussed topic.

This is yet another example of how much representation matters—in the world of pageants and beyond.

Kate Middleton Secretly Spent Two Days Working in a Major London Hospital's Maternity Ward

Kate Middleton spent two days working on a a top-secret project—and now, we finally know what she’s been up to.

According to People, the Duchess of Cambridge quietly got some work experience at a maternity ward in one of London’s major hospitals this week, where she reportedly shadowed midwives and other professionals to better educate herself about children’s early years of development.

Sources also told Hello! Magazine that the royal mom of three “divided her time on the unit, visiting the antenatal, postnatal and labour wards.”

The work was subtly mentioned by Kensington Palace as it was included in the Court Circular on November 28, which reveals the activities the royals have completed each week:

“The Duchess of Cambridge, Joint Patron, the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, today completed two days with Kingston Hospital Maternity Unit in London.”

No other details have been released, but it comes as no surprise that the duchess wanted to lend a helping hand at the hospital’s maternity ward since early childhood care is something Middleton has devoted a lot of her royal work to over the years. In May, she organized a group to learn about child welfare so that she could be more aware of the challenges both parents and caregivers deal with every day. She also later thanked them for their work, support, and advice.

“Through our work, you have reaffirmed my belief of just how timely it is to focus on what happens in the early years of life, and how pivotal a stage of life this is for a child’s future,” Middleton said at the time.

“I hope my long-term commitment to working in the early years will help make a difference over a generational timescale,” she added. “Your thoughts and advice will continue to be hugely valuable as I shape my thinking for the years ahead.”

Then, in November, Middleton opened a new children’s hospice, as part of her Early Years project. She also spent time with the young patients who have life-threatening conditions.

A Day With Major Michelle Curran, the Only Female Thunderbird in the Air Force

In Captain Marvel Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers, an Air Force fighter jet pilot who uses the special powers she gains during an accident to save the galaxy. The movie is fairly realistic—not in the all-powerful superhero way, of course, but in the sense that it’s set in 1995. Just two years earlier, women were granted the honor of flying fighter jets by the U.S. Air Force (USAF). So Danvers is a leader in more ways than one.

But in the 26 years we’ve had female fighter pilots on the Air Force, only five have made it to the Thunderbirds. The demonstration squadron boasts some of the world’s most elite fliers, and those skilled enough to make it serve a two-year assignment. They act as the public face for the USAF, performing jaw-dropping maneuvers at airshows around the country.

Today, there’s only one female Thunderbird pilot: Major Michelle Curran, a 32-year-old Wisconsin native who flies the coveted Opposing Solo position. It means she’s front and center in one of the most visible squadrons in the military. Next year, her last with the Thunderbirds, she’ll get bumped up to Lead Solo, where she’ll be showcasing the maximum capabilities of the planes.

Her favorite maneuver is the vertical roll. “It makes a spiral in the sky,” she tells me. “I’ll go from 150 feet above the ground to 15,000 in a few seconds while rolling. We have music associated with all our maneuvers and for that one I got to pick the song. I chose [No Doubt’s] ‘I’m Just a Girl.'”

The Air Force turns 72 years old this month. Pair that with Captain Marvel providing more visibility to female pilots earlier this year, and the timing seemed right to experience a day in the life of the only female Thunderbird. To really complete the picture, the Air Force even offered a flight in a F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft (which, I learn via Military.com, is a mainstay of the combat fleet).

I didn’t realize I was nervous about the day ahead, though, until I was halfway to the 177th Fighter Wing of the Atlantic City Air National Guard Base. For one, I’d been told most people who go up in a F-16 for the first time throw up or pass out (for reasons I’ll explain later). One way to mitigate the nauseating effects is to drink lots of water, but that meant double the bathroom breaks on the drive there. So now, I’m not only anxious about puking or passing out in front of a badass pilot but also concerned I’ll be late to meet this badass pilot. On top of that, I worry she might be intimidating. What if I call her by the wrong rank? Do I have to salute? What happens if you unwittingly commit a faux pas in front of one of the best fliers in the world?

But from the moment I meet Curran on the scorching hot tarmac, she is warm and funny. She’d just landed from a Thunderbirds show in Sioux Falls and immediately jokes that she needs to fix her hair after sweating too much on the flight over. “These are not breathable,” she adds, tugging at her flight jumpsuit.

Curran has been in the Air Force for 11 years, but flying wasn’t always her goal. Growing up in a small town of about 4,000 people, she knew she didn’t want to stay there forever but she worried about how to pay for college. She was applying to scholarship programs when her father suggested looking into the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). She applied, picking the Air Force as her military arm of choice on a bit of a whim. (“I’ve always liked roller-coasters, I’m a thrill-seeker, and I wanted to travel,” she explains.) Once she visited a base and heard the roar of the jets, though, she knew she wanted to pursue the pilot route. She went for it, even competing for a highly-coveted pilot spot while still in college. Eventually, she was selected. “I was so excited, I called everyone in my family—and none of them answered their phones,” she deadpans. “So that was cool.”

Priyanka Chopra Threw Nick Jonas a Major Party to Celebrate His 27th Birthday

As a couple, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are pretty much the definition of “go big or go home.” What else would you expect from a couple who kicked off their relationship at an event as grand as the Met Gala? Then, of course, they had that amazing multi-day celebration in India for their wedding—followed by subsequent parties stateside. So, of course, it should come as no surprise that Chopra went all out to mark the occasion of Jonas’s birthday. (He turned 27 on September 16.) No big deal: She just rented out an entire NFL football stadium.

Jonas revealed some of the details about the big bash—which took place in Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears—on Twitter. “My beautiful wife surprised me with a touch football game with some of my closest friends and family on the one and only Soldier Field in Chicago (!!!) followed by a few hours of Topgolf, and then a party where pizza, tequila, cake, and cigars were involved,” he wrote.

The crew wore customized jerseys, seemingly modeled after the New York Giants but with an “NJ” for New Jersey, the JoBros’ home state. On the back, Jonas’s read “Nick” while Chopra’s says, “The Wife.”

There was even a cake with a replica of a Villa One (Jonas’s brand with John Varvatos) tequila bottle.

But the birthday fun didn’t stop in Chicago. “The next day we played a sold out show in St. Paul where so many of you brought birthday signs and sang me Happy Birthday on stage,” Jonas tweeted. “I can’t thank you all enough for the outpouring of love and birthday wishes. Means the world to have you all in my life. Here’s to 27!”

Jonas has until next July to start planning for Chopra’s 38th birthday—but given what she just did for him, we’d say he should start now.
