‘This Is Us’ Season 3, Episode 18 Recap: Let's Talk About All the Major Reveals in the Season Finale

Caution: Spoilers for the This Is Us season three finale ahead.

The brains behind This Is Us promised a memorable season three finale, and they absolutely delivered. The episode was gut-wrenching and surprising—especially those last five minutes, which were jam-packed with new information. Seriously, my head is still spinning.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before we introduce new drama, let’s talk about how the season’s biggest storylines wrapped. After a tense fight last week about how their new jobs are affecting their marriage, Randall and Beth reached a resolution: They’re moving to Philadelphia. Randall will stay on board as a city councilman, and Beth has decided to start her own dance studio in the area. Those who thought these two were headed for divorce can breathe a sigh of relief. “We don’t work when we’re apart,” Beth says to Randall toward the end of the episode. “But together we set the world on fire.”

Unfortunately, Kevin and Zoe’s future isn’t as bright. After spending the afternoon babysitting Beth and Randall’s daughters, Zoe realized Kevin truly does want children—even if he won’t admit it. So she ends things, and their last conversation is pretty heartbreaking. “You should be a dad,” she says. “Kevin, you should raise 500 perfectly symmetrical kids. You’ll be amazing at it. And I want you to have that. I want you to have everything you want. But I don’t want that.”

Meanwhile, it’s good news for Kate and Toby: They can take Baby Jack home. He’s breathing on his own, and the doctors seem optimistic about his health. But there might be some potential friction with Rebecca, who’s moving to Los Angeles with Miguel to help Kate with the baby. They had a minor tiff at the hospital—which was resolved—but I have a feeling Kate’s not going to respond well to Rebecca’s hands-on (grand)mothering.

This all led to those aforementioned last five minutes, which were some of the most illuminating in the show’s history. That’s when everything people will be talking about tomorrow happened. Questions were answered. Mysteries were solved. But in true This Is Us fashion, we were also left with several cliffhangers. Let’s go over the biggest moments right now:

If you’ll recall, Randall wasn’t wearing a wedding ring in the flash-forward from last year, which led many people to think he and Beth were dunzo. But rejoice, “R&B” shippers: The couple is still very much together, as evidenced by the kiss Beth gives Randall in this new flash-forward, and the giant wedding ring on her finger.

NBC

This implies, at least, that he and Zoe never get back together. (She’s quite firm in her desire to not have children.) So does this mean Kevin and Sophie found their way back to each other? They did have that coffee date a few episodes back. Granted, Sophie was engaged to someone else then, but I wouldn’t put it past This Is Us to reunite these two. Of course, it’s also possible Kevin just met someone new, but that’s boring so moving on.

He’s nowhere to be found in the future, when the entire family is gathered at Kevin’s house to visit a clearly-sick Rebecca. So either he passed away, he and Rebecca broke up, or he’s just running late to the house. My money’s on the third. It wouldn’t be the first time This Is Us gave viewers premature heart attacks.

The last time we saw Jack’s very-much-alive brother was in the middle of season three, when he iced out the Pearsons after they tried to help him get sober. But he appears in the flash-forward healthy, clean-cut, and sitting by Rebecca’s side. At some point between the present and future, he obviously mended the fence with his family. And picked up a shaving kit!

We Need to Talk About Lupita Nyong'o's *Us* Promo Looks

Lupita Nyong’o‘s performance in Jordan Peele’s Us is earning rave reviews and even Oscar buzz (meantime the film is breaking records left and right). But her acting chops are not the only part of her involvement with the film getting praise, though. The actress has been out promoting Us on the red carpet, on late night shows, at college campuses—and she’s been doing it in full-blown lewks that say: gore, but make it fashion. And people just can’t get enough.

Nyong’o worked with longtime stylist Micaela Erlanger to assemble the much talked-about Us press tour wardrobe, which has fans delighted, frightened, and glued to Instagram to see what’s next.

“We really wanted to have fun with this tour—the last one we did was Black Panther—and capture the duality of the characters in the film,” Erlanger tells Glamour. “We had lots of ideas and shared images. I looked at everything from creepy carnivals to old Alexander McQueen shows to the most recent Dior Couture circus collection. The overall feeling was a bit twisted, dark, unexpected—but still fashion forward, whether that was communicated through her looks, hair, makeup, accessories, etc.”

Some of these references have been more direct than others. For example, Erlanger reveals that Nyong’o has been wearing “little scissor earrings and rings throughout the tour,” as a nod to the movie. She first wore them to the Us premiere at South by Southwest, which was the first major red carpet from the press cycle.

“We searched high and low [for scissor earrings] with no luck,” Erlanger remembers, “until my assistant learned about this designer, Lauren Kalssen.” Nyong’o wore the diamond-encrusted pair with an Honayda suit.

More subtly, though, Nyong’o has also worn outfits that incorporate the idea of duality, which is core to Us, into design. “This Rosie Assoulin dress was a perfect example of that,” Erlanger says of the brand’s Hans Yolo style, with its split contrasting floral pattern. That paired with the actress’ eye makeup, the stylist adds, was “perfect.”

Nyong’o isn’t slowing down with her fashion. If anything, her Us looks only keep getting better and better. Ahead, read on for more tidbits from Erlanger about Nyong’o’s epic outfits (and try not to get too excited about the prospect of awards season…)

'This Is Us' Season 3, Episode 17 Recap: We Need to Talk About Beth

Last night’s This Is Us was painful, to say the least. After several episodes of tip-toeing around each other, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) finally had an honest conversation about what’s straining their marriage. Those keeping up with season three saw this coming: Beth’s new gig as a dance teacher is clashing with Randall’s city councilman duties, and their family is paying the price. In a bold move, Randall asked Beth to quit her job to ease their home life, but she refused. And that, she explained, is why their relationship isn’t working.

“For the past 20 years, I have stood by your side through every whim, every pipe dream, every flight of fancy that you can think of,” she said to Randall in yesterday’s episode. “For the first time I have a flight of fancy, something that I want, and still it becomes about you.”

I called this exact thing out in November, and last night only strengthened my viewpoint. The episode explored Randall and Beth’s entire relationship history, and it shed light on a trend: Beth constantly making sacrifices for Randall. In college, she flat-out told him to stop calling her when they first met, but he persisted…and she bent. In 2016, when all Beth wanted was a night away for herself, Randall guilted her into staying home. In recent episodes, the compromising has become more extreme. When Randall decided to buy his biological father’s old apartment building, Beth went along with it. When he wanted to run for city councilman, she went along with it.

Now, Beth is the one who’s found her passion, and she’s refusing to let it go. “We made a promise to one another that we would never get lost in each other, and I broke that promise. And you let me,” she says at one point.

NBC

Beth isn’t perfect, of course. During their fight, she made an insensitive comment about Randall’s anxiety attacks that isn’t OK on any level. It’s ultimately what caused him to walk out, leaving the state of their marriage unknown to viewers. But I’m still siding with Beth, because she’s dealing with something I’ve seen many women, both fictional and real, experience. How often do men in the public space quit their jobs or stifle their passions to support the women in their lives?

This doesn’t mean Randall is bad guy. He’s progressive, he’s smart, and there’s no doubt he loves and respects his wife. But our culture’s insistence that women be selfless is so strong, it can affect even the most liberal couples.

Take Madonna, who four years ago admitted she felt “incarcerated” during her marriage to director Guy Ritchie, which lasted from 2000 to 2008. “I did find myself sometimes in a state of conflict,” she told The Sun. “There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband felt comfortable with.”

Or how about The Wife, which has shades of Beth and Randall’s situation. The 2018 film centers on Joan (Glenn Close), a woman constantly living in the shadow of her vain, self-absorbed husband, Joseph (Jonathan Pryce ), despite the fact she’s the brains behind his success. Women have historically been the ones to compromise, to put their dreams on hold, to dim their shines—all for the sake of preserving the fragile male ego. In my opinion, this is what Beth’s had to do with Randall for years.

And here’s the kicker: Randall didn’t even have evidence to refute Beth’s claims. He just scoffed at her account of their relationship and called it “revisionist history.” When Beth later asked Randall to admit he thinks his job is more important than hers, he said, “I will not be bullied into saying something even more awful to you.” Read that response carefully. It’s padded language: At no point did he say Beth was wrong or that their jobs carried equal weight. To me, this further confirms Beth’s perspective on their marriage is true.

How To Talk To Your Boss About Your Mental Health

How can you get that kind of support from your boss? Should you bring up your mental health condition at all? We asked the experts how to tackle these toughies, whether you need a long lunch for a weekly therapy appointment or a leave of absence for more intensive care.

1. Test the waters
What will my coworkers think? Will my boss judge me differently? Will it hurt my career? Those are all valid questions, says Theresa Nguyen, vice president of policy and programs at Mental Health America: “Even though everyone has rights to accommodations, the reality is that asking for them is scary.” You can check the company handbook or website for any official policies. If you feel comfortable with your direct supervisor, it’s ideal to speak with her first, says Tanisha Ranger, a Nevada-based psychologist who has helped many clients broach the topic of mental health with their employers. Start by testing the waters, asking general questions such as, “If I have a recurring doctor’s appointment during the work day, how do you want me to handle that?” Her response can be a good indicator of whether or not she’ll be open to giving you some flexibility. Once you’re ready to talk to your boss about your specific situation, schedule some time to speak privately.

2. Do your homework
Before you have a more private meeting, do some due diligence—it’s important to walk into your boss’s office as prepared as possible and offer a plan that you’ve discussed with your therapist, Ranger says, rather than just unloading your diagnosis and waiting for your boss to provide the solutions. It helps to provide a list of requested accommodations and explain how each will help you perform to your potential.

In other words, you want to present your boss with a solution, not a problem. So explain how your mental illness may affect your work and how specific accommodations will allow you to perform to the best of your ability. For example, if you deal with PTSD and sometimes struggle with concentration, detail how working from home where you can control your environment could help you stay on course.

3. Be open to their suggestions
Employees have a right to “reasonable accommodations” but it’s ultimately up to employers to determine what reasonable means. Your boss may not immediately agree to all your requests, so be open to working together to finding creative solutions that will work for both you and your employer.

If an accommodation is minor, such as taking a long lunch once a week for a therapy appointment, a brief conversation with your boss will often suffice. But for bigger accommodations that will more drastically change your schedule, be prepared to work with HR too.

4. Know when to involve HR
If you don’t have a good relationship with your supervisor or you’ve tested the waters and gotten the impression that she won’t be understanding, you can opt to go directly to human resources to discuss your situation.

This is often a more discreet option, since they can’t legally share the reason for your medical accommodations if you don’t want them to, says Jessica Methot, Ph.D., an associate professor at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations. “This information is confidential explicitly because supervisors cannot be given information that can be used to discriminate against employees,” she says. “In this case, you would be protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act.” This means that even if you need to take a leave of absence, your boss doesn’t need to know why—you can work with your doctor and your HR team to fill out the appropriate Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) paperwork. “All you need to tell your boss is that you have a medical condition and you’ve completed the FMLA paperwork with HR,” Ranger says.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Review – Why It's Best Pink Lipstick Ever

I’ve always wanted a trademark lipstick like Taylor Swift—a “red lip, classic thing” that immediately registers as mine. It didn’t necessarily have to be red. Any shade would do, if it had the elusive 24/7 wearability of a so-called signature.

Singling out a lipstick I’d want to wear day in and day out—and that spoke to who I am at the same time—became my beauty obsession early this year. Like a freshman at college orientation, I took a “try everything once” approach to my hunt. I’ve tested cherry and candy apple reds; “universal” nudes with mauve and orange undertones; and, in a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina-inspired moment of edginess, matte blacks and dark blues. Lipstick speed-dating introduced me to shades I wouldn’t have sampled otherwise, but they felt more like occasion lipsticks than an everyday pick.

On the other side of those tests, I knew the most “me” shade would fall somewhere between a nude and a pink. It had to be both polished and a little preppy—something that says I get my inspiration from pop singers (see above) and Kate Spade editorials. I eventually turned to the Glamour beauty team for lipstick guidance and got an immediate recommendation: Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in a shade called Pillow Talk.

Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed by the light mauve pink in the tube. This? This the lipstick people rave about? While the packaging was beautiful, the color itself didn’t seem like anything extraordinary. Then I put it on.

Mattes I had tested on my lipstick journey left my lips flaky and dry. Charlotte Tilbury’s lipstick glided on with a cashmere softness on the first try. I couldn’t believe the quality. No, really—just look at the Slacks I sent our beauty assistant, Bella, about it.

It was love at first swipe.

Out of the tube, the tone has a subtle glow. One coat enhances my natural lip color; two or three more, and I have a pink lip that’s just shy of a berry tone. In other words, it’s exactly what I was looking for.

After that first test, I started wearing Pillow Talk every day. Most mornings, I swipe on two coats of it and get moving. When I have more time, I line and fill in my lips with the corresponding Pillow Talk Lip Cheat lip liner. It adds a hint of volume—and my lipstick doesn’t budge through my morning and afternoon coffees with the extra grip.

I’m not the only one who’s named Pillow Talk my desert island lipstick since giving it a try. I share an obsession with Amal Clooney, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Moss, apparently. Then, there are the several thousand #pillowtalklipstick posts (and counting) singing the shade’s praises on Instagram. The fandom is so intense, Charlotte Tilbury even created an entire Pillow Talk collection featuring blush and eyeshadow palettes that riff on the mauve-pink shade—which promptly sold out (and was quickly restocked) when it launched last season.

I have yet to try the entire collection, but it’s only a matter of time—Pillow Talk is worth every cent. This natural, tawny pink always goes on smooth and, somehow, hydrates my lips. It’s low-key enough to wear to meetings or appointments, but the buildable tone can look “done” enough for drinks after work. People from my mom to the cashier at my neighborhood Walgreens have told me it suits me. I have to agree: I can’t see myself wearing anything else.

Everything Jordyn Woods Said About the Khloé Kardashian–Tristan Thompson Scandal on ‘Red Table Talk’

“I was drunk. I was not tipsy. I was drunk, but I was not beyond the point of recollection. I know where I was. But on the way out, he did kiss me. No passion—no nothing—on the way out. He just kissed me. It was a kiss on the lips, but no tongue kiss, no making out. Nothing. And I don’t think he’s wrong, either, because I allowed myself in that position. And when alcohol’s involved, people make dumb moves or people get caught up in the moment.

“I didn’t know how to feel. I was like, That didn’t just happen. I was leaving already, so I walked out immediately after. And I got in the car and I was like, No, that didn’t happen. I was just like, I need to go. I was in shock. I was more so like, Did this really [happen]? I was like, Hmmm, let me just pretend like that didn’t happen…. That’s where I’ll take responsibility to where I can’t be doing that…. Because there’s so much history involved, I wasn’t thinking right. I take full responsibility for that.”

Why did Thompson do it? “I’m there until the sun’s coming up. He’s like maybe, Let me just shoot my shot.”

What Woods did the next day. “I had talked to Kylie and Khloé in the morning. I told them I was there. I had talked to Khloé, and she asked me what was going on. Is everything fine? And in my head of trying to forget that part of the story, I was just like, ‘No, he was chillin’. Everything was OK. There were girls there, but he wasn’t all over the girls.'”

Why did Woods lie? “I was honest about being there, but I wasn’t honest about the actions that had taken place. I just knew how much turmoil was going on that I was like, Let me not just throw more fuel on the fire. I know I was trying to protect Khloé’s heart. She doesn’t deserve this, either. People have even dehumanized her in this situation to where they can’t feel for her. And it’s not fair that she has to deal with this, either. The last thing I wanted to do was be that person.

“I’m no home-wrecker. I would never try to hurt someone’s home, especially someone that I love and someone who has a beautiful daughter. I never was trying to steal someone’s man. I don’t need your situation. I really just hurt so many more people by not telling the truth.”

Does Woods blame herself for why Thompson and Kardashian aren’t together? “I know I’m not the reason that Tristan and Khloé are not together. This situation may have made it harder for her to want to be with him, and I understand that. But I know I’m not the reason.”

Did she consider having sex with Thompson? “Never. Never a thought. Never a consideration. Never happened. And never will I. And that’s why I’m willing to be put up to the test. Attach me to a lie detector, whatever it is. I need people to know the truth and, more importantly, I need the people involved to know the truth.”

Has she talked to Thompson since since? “There has been no communication with Tristan. No relationship over time. There’s been no relationship. No communication. No plans on meeting up. No conversation. Nothing.”

Woods says her intention wasn’t to hurt anyone. “I think if that [was] the case, I wouldn’t have been friends with these people for so long. Now I have to deal with my family and all the people I hurt. That family also has to deal with the hurt. This story that didn’t have to be what it was turned into, the biggest scandal or betrayal of the year. I’ve seen what has been been done to my life in only a week based on how the media circulates. They don’t put their focus on the real-world problems. They’re putting their focus on a young black woman who made a mistake, and not a mistake that’s worth public crucifixion. It’s a mistake that should’ve been dealt with internally.”

How Woods coped with the aftermath. “The first few days of this were definitely the hardest. I couldn’t eat. I didn’t eat for days. I couldn’t look at my phone, even. I would just try to sleep and wake up and hope this wouldn’t be true. Every day it was a new headline. Every time you refreshed the page, it was another person bullying me or wishing death upon me or telling me something like, ‘Your father deserved to die.’ I may have done something wrong, but whatever I did, I don’t think I deserve this.”
