Meghan Markle Was Very Much a Part of the *Suits* Season 8 Premiere

Before Meghan Markle was the duchess of Sussex, she was the queen of Suits, a TV show on USA that apparently all your friends secretly watch. It’s a paint-by-numbers legal drama featuring office romances, snappy dialogue, and pencil skirts. Markle’s character, Rachel Zane, partook in all three of those activities, making her a fan favorite for seven seasons. Suits effectively wrapped up Rachel’s storyline in April: After years of back-and-forth, she and Mike (Patrick J. Adams) finally tied the knot. (Coincidentally, Markle’s TV wedding happened just a few weeks before she married Prince Harry.) It was a sweet and poignant ending to a fictional relationship that included lots of in-office make-out sessions.

Well, an almost ending. Rachel Zane was very much a part of the Suits season-eight premiere, which aired Wednesday night. No, Markle didn’t make an appearance in the flesh to reprise her role, but Vulture reports the characters did talk about Rachel and Mike’s new life in Seattle. In an early scene from the premiere, Donna (Sarah Rafferty) helps Rachel’s father, Robert (Wendell Pierce), settle into his new digs at the Zane Specter Litt law firm. “I’m gonna miss her too,” Donna tells Robert after he brings up Rachel, to which he responds, “I’m not sure what’s worse, finding out Mike is a fraud or him taking my daughter away.”

Rachel even made an appearance last night—in the form of a framed photo that also included Mike. “A little welcome-to-the-firm present from your little girl,” Donna says, before giving the photo to Robert. Awww.

Donna and Robert start forming a friendship in the office, which is a nice passing-of-the-torch of sorts, seeing as how she was so close with Rachel for seven seasons. “You think Rachel didn’t tell her father about the mighty Donna Paulsen?” Robert says to Donna. “I guess I never thought of her as much of a chatterbox,” she says cheekily in response. Rejoice, my friends. Rachel Zane lives on.

I wonder if Meghan Markle caught the season premiere from Buckingham Palace.

How to Wear Your Swimsuit As Part of Your Outfit

You wait so long for swim season to arrive—or, at the very least, to be able to go somewhere that requires a swimsuit. You spend so much time scouring the market for that perfect one-piece or bikini. And yet, most likely, you’ll only end up wearing it a handful of times this summer. More and more, though, we’re seeing swim styles that are, yes, first and foremost functional, but also lend themselves to everyday wear, with pieces already in your closet.

Ahead, you’ll find nine outfits that illustrate the tips, and offer some fresh inspiration—and motivation—for wearing your favorite summer suit off the beach. There are a few styling tidbits that translate pretty much across the board. First: Combine a patterned swimsuit with a solid bottom, or vice versa, so that the graphic really stands out. Also, play with proportion—if your swimsuit of choice has a low-cut neckline, find a high-waisted bottom to balance it out; if it features ruffles, pair it with pieces that are more fitted, so that those details are highlighted in the silhouette.

Cheers to making the most out of your seasonal wardrobe.

Jordan Kimball's Quotes Are the Best Part of The Bachelorette Premiere—So We Asked Him for More

If you caught tonight’s season premiere of The Bachelorette, then you know it’s all about male model Jordan Kimball and his epic one liners. They’re so good, they’ll no doubt put him on the fast track to Bachelor in Paradise. (What, you think he’ll actually wind up as Becca’s final choice?)

With quotes like “the power is in the brows” and “my brand is the pensive gentleman,” the 26-year-old from Crystal River, Florida is clearly in a league of his own. Even Becca admitted as such when I asked her about him: “He’s like no one I’ve ever met before. He marches to his own drum.” (That’s an understatement.)

Not only did it take Jordan six hours—yes, hours—to pick out a suit that “looks like a shark” for the first night, but he also brought a pair of luxury European dress shoes so Becca and her suitors know “a gentleman is approaching.” Of course.

Still, aside from showing off his perfectly curated wardrobe, why did Jordan sign up for The Bachelorette? The day before filming began, we sat down with him to learn that—and a hell of a lot more.

How were you cast on The Bachelorette?

Jordan Kimball: I was in Venice, California at a Whole Foods and a producer approached me. Then I had a friend who nominated me a year before, and I had another producer a week later say, “Hey, I have your nomination in front of me.” I already had my application submitted from being recruited, and we went from there. She had the whole hand in submitting me.

Have you seen the show before?

JK: Yes, I’ve seen the show before. I enjoyed it. The season I enjoyed the most was JoJo’s season. I think I enjoy The Bachelorette more than The Bachelor, to be honest.

Have you given yourself any rules prior to going on the show?

JK: Not really. I live every day like a gentleman. I only drink two glasses of wine at most unless it’s a really big celebration, and then Pinot Grigio is my go to. Sauvignon Blanc. I like the white wines. Other than that, you have to stay polished. I don’t intend to have any drama with any of the guys. I just want to be myself and focus on Becca.

Why do you think your last relationship didn’t work?

JK: Because I honestly feel it was the wrong time in our lives. It was a typical tragic first love and it ended very mutually.

What makes you think Becca is the right girl for you?

JK: The fact that she has a tattoo of a cross on her wrist is very big to me. I talk to God every day. I believe that believing in something bigger than yourself has a lot to do with who you are as a person. I understand she has a dog and likes cuddling on the couch with her dog, and that’s something you can definitely catch me doing in the afternoon, maybe with a little rain on the roof. In my free time I like to read. I like to be comfortable. I’m so uncomfortable sometimes with traveling and working with different brands that it would be nice to have someone down to earth enough to just chill on the couch with me.

What’s something you’re scared or nervous about telling Becca?

JK: That I do travel, so I’m not there so much. Maybe three days a week I could be gone. Maybe four days a week, depending on how busy it is. So there’s that potential to have half a week. Obviously I communicate and I would let her know that I’m there, but I’m not always physically there.

What’s your biggest fear in a relationship?

JK: My biggest fear in a relationship is that you give your all to that person in a relationship and fall hard, and maybe they weren’t in it to win it like you were.

Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart, and 80 More Women Just Took Part in a Powerful Protest at Cannes

Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart, Jane Fonda, Marion Cotillard, and Salma Hayek are among the 82 women who took part in a powerful protest gesture at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday to highlight how difficult it is for women to climb the professional ladder in the film industry. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the group walked up the steps leading to the festival’s Théâtre Debussy, paused midway, and silently faced the central Palais building.

Actress Cate Blanchett, who is this year’s competition jury president, and Belgian film director Agnès Varda also presented a joint statement:

“On these steps today stand 82 women representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In the same period 1,688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs. In the 71 years of this world-renowned festival there have been 12 female heads of its juries. The prestigious Palme d’Or has been bestowed upon 71 male directors—too numerous to mention by name—but only two women, Jane Campion, who is with us in spirit, and Agnès Varda, who stands with us today,” said Blanchett.

“These facts are stark and undeniable. Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise. As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress. We are writers, producers, directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors, sales agents and all involved in the cinematic arts. We stand in solidarity with women of all industries,” they continued.

They then read a list of powerful demands:

“We will expect our institutions to actively provide parity and transparency in their executive bodies and safe environments in which to work. We will expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld. We will demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so that they can best reflect the world in which we actually live. A world that allows all of us behind and in front of the camera to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues. We acknowledge all of the women and men who are standing for change. The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb.”

The dramatic gesture was organized by 5050×2020, a French equality movement, and took place just before the premiere of Girls of the Sun, a film by Eva Husson. Husson is the only French female director in the competition this year, and she told Vanity Fair that it’s critical to initiate conversations around gender inequality in film.

“It’s high time. It’s healthy. It’s scary. It’s exploding in the face of a lot of people,” she said. “The patriarchy has not seen it coming so they feel really threatened by it. It’s a huge paradigm shift.”

The festival has been reckoning with ways to address issues of sexual assault, particularly because Harvey Weinstein allegedly assaulted or harassed multiple women during the festival in the past. As a response to the Weinstein allegations, Cannes worked with the French government to launch a hotline where women could report sexual assault or harassment at the event.

But many people have pointed out that Cannes still needs to figure out its own gender gap issues. This year, only three of the 21 directors competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or prize are women. The festival also faced backlash for including a film by Lars von Trier, the Danish director who had been banned from the festival for seven years after making anti-Semitic remarks and whose production company has been accused of sexual harassment.

After Saturday’s dramatic statement, women will continue staging acts to call attention to gender disparity. On Monday, Vanity Fair also reports that women are planning to ask members of the Directors’ Fortnight and Cannes Critics’ Week panel to sign a pledge that calls for more inclusion and diversity.

Gal Gadot Confirms Brett Ratner Isn't a Part of 'Wonder Woman 2'

Last week, Page Six ran a report alleging Gal Gadot told Warner Bros. she won’t sign on for Wonder Woman 2 unless Brett Ratner, the producer who helped finance the first Wonder Woman film, is removed from the equation. If you’ve been following the news, then you know Ratner’s been accused of sexual assault and harassment by several women in Hollywood, including Olivia Munn, Natasha Henstridge, and Ellen Page. So it’d make sense Gadot wouldn’t want him a part of the Wonder Woman franchise because it’s been lauded for depicting strong, empowering, and three-dimensional women.

But the report isn’t 100 percent accurate. Gadot confirmed Wednesday on the TODAY show that, yes, Ratner won’t be involved with Wonder Woman 2, but it’s not just because she demanded it. The decision was made long before Page Six‘s report hit the Internet, and several people involved with the production felt the same way.

“The truth is, there’s so many people involved in making this movie, it’s not just me, and they all echoed the same sentiments,” she said. “Everyone knew what was the right thing to do. But there was nothing for me to actually come and say because [the decision] was already done before this article [on Saturday declaring a stand-off] came out.”

Gadot has been a vocal champion for the female celebrities who’ve come forward with their sexual assault and harassment stories by powerful men in Hollywood. “Bullying and sexual harassment is unacceptable! I stand by all the courageous women confronting their fears and speaking out,” Gadot posted to Instagram on October 13. “Together we stand. We are all united in this time of change.” See her post for yourself, below:

Ben Affleck Wants To Be Part of the Sexual Harassment 'Solution'. Let's Hope He Means It.

With holiday movie releases and awards season looming, it should come as no surprise that there are going to be a lot of questions asked in interviews and on red carpets about the Weinstein scandal and all that has come in its wake. It’s also no surprise that we’ll be hearing a lot of canned replies that have “my publicist approved this message” written all over them—though not from you, Uma Thurman! And calls for change. So many calls for change.

Here are just a few of the stars with projects coming out over the next few months to keep an eye on: Matt Damon (“Downsizing”), Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), the entire cast of “Murder On the Orient Express” including (ahem) Johnny Depp, Woody Harrelson (“LBJ”), Julia Roberts (“Wonder”), Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”), and Anna Kendrick (“Pitch Perfect 3”). And that’s just the beginning.

Yesterday, it was Ben Affleck’s turn as he was out promoting his latest film, “Justice League”. He had a few words to say about the current climate in Hollywood telling the Associated Press that he’s “looking at my own behavior and addressing that and making sure I’m part of the solution.”

It’s probably a good idea that the actor does some self-reflection given the accusations that he groped Hilarie Burton and makeup artist Annamarie Tendler. (He has already apologized for acting inappropriately toward Burton.) And then there’s this video interview from 2004 that recently resurfaced. It’s, frankly, hard to watch.

So, yes, it’s great that Affleck says he wants to be better. (Though it’s more than a little bit distressing that at age 45, he’s just seeing the error of his ways.) That he wants to see “more women need to be pushed to power.” And that sexual harassment also has to be a “men’s issue.” We’re sure to hear many more echo his sentiments.

We just hope they all mean it.
