The Crown Season 3 Made a Reference to One of Princess Diana's Most Iconic Quotes

Princess Diana, or rather Lady Diana Spencer, won’t be making her debut on The Crown until season four, but the groundwork for her arrival is certainly being laid out in season three. In fact, royal fans probably noticed a reference to one of Diana’s most famous quotes in episode nine, “Imborglio.”

Let’s set the scene, shall we? Over the course of the season—which arrived on Netflix on November 17— viewers have been introduced to a few new characters, including Camilla Shand and Andrew Parker-Bowles. Camilla and Andrew are dating, but then she also becomes involved with Prince Charles and Parker-Bowles with Princess Anne. It’s a complex love quadrangle and the beginning of an even more complicated relationship situation that will have royal ramifications for years to come. Charles is very much in love with Camilla, but his family fears she is not suitable enough for the future King of England.

Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Lord Mountbatten, and the Queen Mother bring Princess Anne in to discuss the matter and Anne says that everything will be fine between Charles and Camilla as long as her brother “is prepared for there to always be three in the marriage,” referring to Charles, Camilla, and Andrew Parker-Bowles. The royal family maneuvered behind the scenes to ensure that Camilla married Parker-Bowles and Charles, of course, went on to marry Diana. But, as we all know, Charles’s relationship with Camilla continued.

Princess Anne’s quote in the episode seemed to be inspired from a bombshell TV interview Diana gave in 1995 in which she openly discussed her husband’s affair. “Do you think Mrs. Parker-Bowles was a factor in the breakdown of your marriage?” journalist Martin Bashir asked. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana replied.

Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996 before she tragically died in a car accident in August 1997. Charles and Camilla eventually married in 2005. And in case you weren’t already excited about the upcoming seasons of The Crown, you better be now, because there is still so much drama to come.

Meghan Markle Just Spoke Out on International Women's Day—Here Are Her Best Quotes

While her new role as Duchess of Sussex may preclude her from being overtly political, Meghan Markle has continued to use her global platform to shine light on causes that she’s passionate about—especially the empowerment of women.

So it’s not a big surprise that Markle started off International Women’s Day with a great honor from another powerful woman: the Queen of England. Markle was named vice president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) which “funds and connects young leaders around the world.” Queen Elizabeth is a patron, and Markle’s husband, Prince Harry, already serves as president. “In her role as Vice President of QCT, The Duchess of Sussex will highlight our partnerships with young people across the Commonwealth, and in particular our work supporting women and girls,” the organization said in a statement.

After this announcement, Markle participated in a panel discussion convened by the QCT to talk about the issues women and girls face around the world. The panel’s host, Anne McElvoy, an editor at The Economist, described her as “a royal not afraid to embrace full-on feminism.” The panel was made up of a diverse group of women, including singer Annie Lennox, model and activist Adwoa Aboah, former Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard, Let Us Learn founder Chrisann Jarrett, and the executive director of Campaign for Female Education.

“I think the real treat in and of itself is being able to be here—that is such a gift on this day,” Markle said. “And then separate from that there are the women in my life that I want to celebrate with and send some love to today. But also the men who are championing all of us as part of this journey. And then I’ll put my feet up because that’s a deserved treat, especially in this stage of pregnancy.”

Here are some of her best quotes.

On gender stereotypes

“I think when we talk about gender stereotype shifting—what it means to be masculine, what it means to be feminine—you know I’ve said for a long time: you can be feminine and feminist. You can be masculine. And I think in terms of masculinity, you understand that your strength includes knowing your vulnerabilities and your sense of self and security.”

On feminism for everyone

“We must be global feminists and include men and boys.”

On equality

“If things are wrong and there is a lack of justice and an inequality, someone needs to say something—and why can’t it be you?” (Simple, yet sound advice from a woman who once got Ivory soap to change the wording of a sexist ad.)

On Social Media

“Hashtags are not enough. We have a responsibility as well, that if you’re part of social media and engaging in that way, we’re not just giving people more things to chat about but actually something to do, and what’s the action.”

On Baby Sussex

“It’s funny, I’d actually been joking these past few weeks… I’d seen this documentary on Netflix about feminism, and one of the things they said during pregnancy was ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism.’ I loved that. So boy or girl, whatever it is, we hope that that’s the case.” (And in case you were wondering, Markle’s pregnancy is going “very well.”)

On Prince Harry (and men’s) feminism

“Your confidence comes in knowing that a woman by your side, not behind you, is actually something you shouldn’t be threatened about but, opposed to that, you should feel really empowered in having that additional support that this is really about us working together. That’s what gender equality means for me and having men part of that conversation saying there’s nothing threatening about a women coming up to the same level, it’s our safety in numbers, this is our power and our strength as a team. And that’s gender neutral if you really think about it. So I hope that men are part of the conversation. My husband certainly is.”

Jordan Kimball's Quotes Are the Best Part of The Bachelorette Premiere—So We Asked Him for More

If you caught tonight’s season premiere of The Bachelorette, then you know it’s all about male model Jordan Kimball and his epic one liners. They’re so good, they’ll no doubt put him on the fast track to Bachelor in Paradise. (What, you think he’ll actually wind up as Becca’s final choice?)

With quotes like “the power is in the brows” and “my brand is the pensive gentleman,” the 26-year-old from Crystal River, Florida is clearly in a league of his own. Even Becca admitted as such when I asked her about him: “He’s like no one I’ve ever met before. He marches to his own drum.” (That’s an understatement.)

Not only did it take Jordan six hours—yes, hours—to pick out a suit that “looks like a shark” for the first night, but he also brought a pair of luxury European dress shoes so Becca and her suitors know “a gentleman is approaching.” Of course.

Still, aside from showing off his perfectly curated wardrobe, why did Jordan sign up for The Bachelorette? The day before filming began, we sat down with him to learn that—and a hell of a lot more.

How were you cast on The Bachelorette?

Jordan Kimball: I was in Venice, California at a Whole Foods and a producer approached me. Then I had a friend who nominated me a year before, and I had another producer a week later say, “Hey, I have your nomination in front of me.” I already had my application submitted from being recruited, and we went from there. She had the whole hand in submitting me.

Have you seen the show before?

JK: Yes, I’ve seen the show before. I enjoyed it. The season I enjoyed the most was JoJo’s season. I think I enjoy The Bachelorette more than The Bachelor, to be honest.

Have you given yourself any rules prior to going on the show?

JK: Not really. I live every day like a gentleman. I only drink two glasses of wine at most unless it’s a really big celebration, and then Pinot Grigio is my go to. Sauvignon Blanc. I like the white wines. Other than that, you have to stay polished. I don’t intend to have any drama with any of the guys. I just want to be myself and focus on Becca.

Why do you think your last relationship didn’t work?

JK: Because I honestly feel it was the wrong time in our lives. It was a typical tragic first love and it ended very mutually.

What makes you think Becca is the right girl for you?

JK: The fact that she has a tattoo of a cross on her wrist is very big to me. I talk to God every day. I believe that believing in something bigger than yourself has a lot to do with who you are as a person. I understand she has a dog and likes cuddling on the couch with her dog, and that’s something you can definitely catch me doing in the afternoon, maybe with a little rain on the roof. In my free time I like to read. I like to be comfortable. I’m so uncomfortable sometimes with traveling and working with different brands that it would be nice to have someone down to earth enough to just chill on the couch with me.

What’s something you’re scared or nervous about telling Becca?

JK: That I do travel, so I’m not there so much. Maybe three days a week I could be gone. Maybe four days a week, depending on how busy it is. So there’s that potential to have half a week. Obviously I communicate and I would let her know that I’m there, but I’m not always physically there.

What’s your biggest fear in a relationship?

JK: My biggest fear in a relationship is that you give your all to that person in a relationship and fall hard, and maybe they weren’t in it to win it like you were.
