People Are Freaking Out Over Elle Fanning’s Cannes Film Festival 2019 Fashion

To say Elle Fanning has been turning it out on the red carpet at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival would be a serious understatement. As a member of the festival’s jury (the youngest ever!), she’s expected to show up for all the major premieres—and oh, has she shown up.

Night after night, event after event, Fanning and longtime stylist Samantha McMillen have been putting together some epic looks, and people can’t handle it. One particular Dior ensemble—a custom couture creation, inspired by an iconic 1947 photograph—has gotten everyone talking. The actress wore a full skirt, a ruffled blouse, and a wide-brim hat to the premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and, appropriately, and looked like an Old Hollywood movie star. She even got the poses down on the red carpet.

The outfit is actually a callback to a famous black-and-white photo of a model wearing one of Christian Dior’s haute couture creations in the 1940s. According to the brand, it took 450 hours to make Fanning’s modern recreation of the look.

And every last second was worth it, judging from the extremely positive reaction on social media. “ELLE FANNING….. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING UP AT THIS LEVEL,” one user wrote. Another had a brilliant request for the Hollywood powers that be: “Y’all better cast elle fanning (21) and rosamund pike (40) as a daughter-mother grifter duo in some noirish movie asap!”

Fanning’s fashion commitment to her lewks appears to be endless: Earlier this week, it was reported that she actually fainted at a cocktail party because the corset on her Prada dress was too tight. But not to worry, she posted on Instagram afterward about it, reassuring fans that she was okay.

“Oops, had a fainting spell tonight in my 1950’s Prada prom dress but it’s all good!! #dresstootight #timeofthemonth,” she captioned a selfie.

In light of the Dior look, To All the Boys I Loved Before author Jenny Han chimed in on the Twitter conversation, sharing her thoughts on what makes Fanning’s approach to fashion so delightful to watch. “What I love about Elle Fanning’s red carpet style is she is always very much herself,” she wrote. “There’s always a little bit of whimsy, a little tartness, and it’s always fun. She’s evolved just beautifully while staying completely true to herself! What I’m saying is I stan.”

Well said, Jenny.

The Best Looks From the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet

Earlier this month, celebrities were able to live out their campiest fashion dreams on the red carpet at the Met Gala. They’ve dialed it back down (a bit) now, but at the Cannes Film Festival, we’re still seeing some of that heightened extravagance from our favorite celebrities: Eva Longoria with an extra-extra-high slit, Elle Fanning with a dramatic silky cape, Bella Hadid with tiers of tulle. This year, we also had some pretty exciting first-timers, like Priyanka Chopra and Selena Gomez, to look forward to—and they brought the style and sparkle (like, decked-in-Chopard-jewels sparkle) to the carpet.

Ahead, catch up on some of the absolute best fashion moments coming out of the French Riviera at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

Selena Gomez's Cannes Makeup Had a Secret Nod to Miley Cyrus

Selena Gomez walked the famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet for the first time yesterday to promote her upcoming new movie, The Dead Don’t Die. From her white two-piece Louis Vuitton dress to some serious bling in the form of a Bulgari diamond necklace and ring, she looked incredible.

But what we really need to talk about is Gomez’s ridiculously good glam, specifically her makeup. The vibe was a modern take on Old Hollywood with a classic red lip and a cat-eye by makeup artist Hung Vanngo using Marc Jacobs Beauty. It also had a hidden nod to fellow former Disney star, Miley Cyrus. Vanngo used Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Oh Miley 200 ($32), a strawberry red shade inspired by the singer, on Gomez to give her lips a pop of color.

That wasn’t even the only pop star connection with her look. Vanngo revealed that he also used the brand’s Youthquake Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème ($59), which was Lady Gaga‘s secret skin weapon during awards season and the Met Gala. (Gaga’s longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno is an ambassador for the brand, so she got to test it out secretly for months before it hit shelves this month.)

Vanngo also used Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick in L23 ($32) and Accomplice Instant Blurring Beauty Powder in Siren 52 ($49) to create even more of a glow before adding O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tan-Tastic! ($49) and Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 506 Flesh & Fantasy ($42) for a touch of warmth.

And to balance Gomez’s bold red lip, Vanngo created a sparkly cat-eye. (Perhaps Taylor Swift was the inspiration?) Here’s how to re-create it for yourself.

First apply a light layer of See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Flashlight ($28) to give your lids that glittery look. Next, use the Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner—inspired by calligraphy pens—in Blacquer ($30) to create a bold wing liner that emphasizes your eye shape. Then, finish with a few coats of Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($26).

The final result? Flawless. If only a makeup look could win the Palme d’Or.

Asia Argento: Cannes Was Harvey Weinstein's 'Hunting Grounds'

On Saturday, Italian actress and activist Asia Argento addressed the crowd at Cannes, bravely calling out the festival as former producer and alleged serial sexual assaulter Harvey Weinstein‘s “hunting grounds.”

“I was raped by Harvey Weinstein in Cannes in 1997,” Argento said while standing next to director Ava DuVernay as they presented the Best Actress prize. “I was 21 years old. This festival was his hunting ground. I’m going to make a prediction: Harvey Weinstein will never be welcomed here again. He will never disgrace the community that once embraced him and covered up for his crimes.”

Argento noted as she looked out into the crowd, she saw several people who “need to be held accountable for their conduct against women. You know who you are.”

Argento added: “But most importantly we know who you are and we will not allow you to get away with it any longer.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Argento’s comments silenced the crowd. Those attending, THR reports, looked visibly stunned. Following her speech, jury president Cate Blanchett stood up on stage and added, “It is complicated as a woman to stand.”

Argento later posted a clip of her speech to her Instagram account, writing “Speaking Truth To Power in Cannes since nobody else would do it ✊ Women Fight On! This speech goes out to all my sisters. I love you. I am grateful. We shall prevail. #cannes2018 #cloture”

Though Argento’s words were an important message to the wider film industry, the festival has refused to update its own code of conduct to specifically ban sexual harassment. Instead, it’s set up a hotline for victims to call.

In 2017, Argento detailed Weinstein’s alleged assault to the New Yorker, explaining that when the assault happened she did not speak out because she feared retribution and that Weinstein would “crush” her career.

“I know he has crushed a lot of people before,” Argento said. “That’s why this story—in my case, it’s 20 years old; some of them are older—has never come out.”

According to Argento’s account, she was asked to attend a party thrown by Miramax at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, on the French Riviera. She explained she felt she needed to attend for professional reasons—but when a producer brought her upstairs, it was just Weinstein alone in the room.

“I’m like, ‘Where is the fucking party?’” she told New Yorker, adding that the producer replied, “Oh, we got here too early,” and then left her alone with Weinstein.

Argento alleged that Weinstein at first praised her work, before leaving the room and returning only wearing a bathrobe.

“He asks me to give a massage. I was, like, ‘Look, man, I am no fucking fool,’” Argento said. “But, looking back, I am a fucking fool. And I am still trying to come to grips with what happened.”

Argento said she reluctantly agreed to give him a massage, at which point Weinstein allegedly pulled up her skirt and performed oral sex on the actress against her will.

“The thing with being a victim is I felt responsible,” she said. “Because, if I were a strong woman, I would have kicked him in the balls and run away. But I didn’t. And so I felt responsible.”

Kristen Stewart Taking Off Her Heels on the 2018 Cannes Red Carpet Is a Mood

Kristen Stewart has been slaying her way up and down the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. But after a few days, serving lewks can feel exhausting—at least, we can *imagine..How does Stewart deal? Well, she kicks off her high heels halfway through a red carpet, because why not?

Stewart was making her way into a screening of BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee’s latest film. And as she approached the steps to the theater, the Cannes juror appeared to be over her stilettos. In front of a mass of photographers, Stewart stopped to remove her pointy-toed black Christian Louboutin pumps; she picked them up, and carried them up the steps, barefoot. The whole sequence was, of course, documented by the aforementioned photographers, and it’s honestly relatable AF.

Here’s how it unfolded.

Though the shoes certainly complemented her long-sleeve metallic mini, a customization of a Chanel Haute Couture look from fall 2013, anyone who’s ever experienced that high-heel breaking point can understand Stewart’s rationale. Plus, this instantly iconic moment is reminiscent of Emma Thompson at the 2014 Golden Globes, when she dramatically ditched her heels onstage while addressing her fellow movie makers. Hey, stilettos are no joke.

Stewart has spoken about the footwear double standard at Cannes, which, for a while, reportedly required women to wear heels: “There’s definitely a distinct dress code… People get very upset at you if you don’t wear heels or whatever,” she told The Hollywood Reporter last year, adding that “if you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, then you can’t ask me either.”

Over the weekend Stewart, along with more than 80 other actresses and filmmakers (including Ava DuVernay and Salma Hayek), participated in a silent protest on the Cannes red carpet to highlight gender inequity in the film industry.

Long-Lost Twins Carla Bruni and Bella Hadid Finally Met at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival

Conspiracy theorists, take note: All those rumors that Bella Hadid and Carla Bruni are actually the same person have officially been debunked—and all it took was a selfie.

Online, the two supermodels have long been billed as doppelgängers. Their runway photos have been put side-by-side to show their remarkable similarities. For instance: Here’s an image of Bruni at a a Lacroix Haute Couture show in 1996, and one of Hadid at the most recent Fendi show in February.

Despite this Internet-favorite fan theory, we had never seen Hadid and Bruni photographed together. That all changed at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where their fateful meeting took place, all thanks to Naomi Campbell.

This meeting-of-the-models happened at Campbell’s annual Fashion For Relief gala on Sunday night, which raised funds for Save the Children and Time’s Up, according to Vanity Fair. The event has a fashion show component, which featured Hadid, Winnie Harlow, and Campbell herself, among other supermodels, per The Sun.

At some point of the evening, Hadid was able to meet her supermodel lookalike. Naturally, they documented it with a selfie.

Where one conspiracy theory ends, another begins: They may have shut down the rumor that they’re secretly the same person by posing for a photo together, but Bruni decided to (jokingly) start another one herself. “Do I have a hidden daughter? @bellahadid,” the Italian-French model captioned the selfie. The resemblance is uncanny.
