Here's Why Bachelorette Fans Are Mad at Clare Crawley on Behalf of Contestant Matt James

Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette hasn’t even begun filming yet, but it’s already shaping up to be the most dramatic season ever. (But, like, really.)

Production is on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we’ve already got a bit of feud brewing between Crawley and contestant Matt James, who also just happens to be BFFs with Tyler Cameron. The whole thing’s a bit messy, confusing, and low-key ridiculous, so we’re here to break down what’s got Bachelor Nation so frustrated with next season’s lead.

This all started with a couple of tweets from Crawley on April 25. “If you are doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season… you are in it for the wrong reasons… #dontwasteyourtime,” she wrote. “Respect the opportunity you’ve been given. Respect the rules. Respect me. @BacheloretteABC ❤️”

Fans strongly believe these tweets were about James even though she doesn’t mention him by name. Why? James told E! News that he is very much looking forward to meeting Crawley when the show can start filming. “There’s a very beautiful young lady in Sacramento right now who’s quarantining and who is patiently waiting for production on a show to pick back up and I’ve been waiting as well,” he said. “I’m hoping after everything settles down and everyone is safe that I’ll finally get to meet her. I’m looking forward to it.”

And yes, James is on Cameo—but fans were quick to point out he’s been using these opportunities to promote his charity. “Clare… Clare… in this house we stan Matt James. He is doing interviews to promote his charity, ABC Food Tours which is producing tablets and meals for kids in underprivileged areas. And he said he is looking forward to meeting you so where’s the problem,” one person tweeted.

After Crawley’s tweets, James posted a video message in his Instagram Stories about why he’s on Cameo, according to Us Weekly. “For those of you who may have missed the message earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman, my former teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver, pledged all of our Cameo earnings to the Robin Hood Foundation to fight this fight,” James said.

Even host Chris Harrison weighed in on the drama.

Bachelor Nation appears to be firmly on Team Matt in this situation, and many pointed out that he might be more well known than she is at this point. “Lol I knew who Matt James was before I knew who Clare was,” one fan tweeted. “So it’s pretty funny she thinks he has a following bc of her.” Just as a reminder, Crawley did not actually name names.

Of course, there are some coming to the lead’s defense. “I think it is very clear that Matt is only coming on to try and become the Bachelor,” one fan replied to the backlash. “But to fault Clare for not wanting to risk people coming on for the wrong reasons after the last few seasons we have had seems WILD.”

Clare Crawley has yet to respond to the backlash—but we’re sure this will all be hashed out when the show finally airs…eventually.

Shows Like The Bachelor: Stream These Reality TV Series While You Wait for The Bachelorette Premiere

In the mood to watch shows like The Bachelor now that Peter Weber’s season has ended? I mean, we do have several weeks before Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette airs. You have a reality-TV itch that needs scratching. And not just any kind of reality show: You need one that perfectly blends romance, drama, hot people, and gorgeous locations. A show that’s equal parts sappy and salacious. One during which you’re laughing hysterically in one scene but then oddly sentimental the next.

The Bachelorette and The Bachelor are masters of this craft, of course, but there are other reality shows that do it too—and they’ll save you during this rose ceremony drought.

Take Love Island, the British dating series that, on the surface, is completely bonkers. But by episode three you’re emotionally attached to all the contestants. Or how about Netflix’s Love Is Blind, which will have you shouting at your screen within minutes? Bottom line is there’s plenty out there to keep you occupied until that first rose ceremony.

Here are our recommendations for shows like The Bachelor and Bachelorette, but be warned: Once you start any of these shows, you won’t stop.

Tyler Cameron's BFF Will Be a Contestant on ‘The Bachelorette,’ and People Are So Excited

You know how Tyler Cameron won millions of hearts on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette? Well, now it’s his best friend’s turn to accept some roses.

On March 10, the Bachelorette Facebook page shared the names and ages of Clare Crawley’s 32 contestants. Despite some initial rumors, there were still plenty of boys in their twenties. This is somewhat disheartening, considering Crawley, 38, is likely looking for someone who is just as ready to settle down as she is. Like many Bachelor Nation fans have begun pointing out, 23 through 25 just seems too young.

Still, one of those 20-somethings is a somewhat familiar face and giving folks at home something to get excited about. Matt James, 28, is not only extremely cute, but he’s also Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron’s BFF and roommate in New York City. They also run the charity organization ABC Food Tours together. Cameron even joked way before the cast was announced that he’d like to see James in Bachelor Nation (specifically, the next Bachelor).

“I can’t wait to watch him next year,” he told People back in August, pointing to James.

“With everything going on with ABC, I can’t really talk about it,” James replied at the time.

Seriously, Cameron really likes this guy and posts about him all. The. Time. I’m sure James also posts about Cameron, but like all the newbies, his Instagram account is currently set to private.

“We have finally made ourselves a home together thanks to our friends over at @raymourflanigan! (#MYLER is forever) This whole set was customizable to the tee,” Cameron wrote in a caption as recently as February 27. “We have come a long way from living on the bean bag.”

Luckily for us, there are plenty more posts of the pair, who refer to themselves as #MYLER a lot…

“Happy birthday to my fellow cookie lover,” Cameron wrote on James’s birthday. “Keep impacting the world.” I seriously love these two. Here are some more posts from Cameron:

Cameron isn’t the only one who wants to see James as the next Bachelor. While many Facebook commentators are excited to see James join the cast, there are a lot of comments suggesting he may be too young for Crawley but perfect to lead the following season. “Love this for Matt but only if he doesn’t end up with Clare and is the next bachelor,” one commenter wrote. I, personally, would love to see it.

Who Are the 2020 Bachelorette Contestants? Top Theories About Clare Crawley's Cast

As you very well know by now, Clare Crawley is the new Bachelorette. What you don’t know is what that means for this year’s Bachelorette contestants.

One thing is certain: If Pete Weber’s Bachelor gimmick was his pilot’s license, Crawley’s theme is undoubtedly going to be her age. At 38, she is the oldest Bachelorette in franchise history, directly following Hannah Brown, the youngest at 24 years old. Like Brown, Crawley has been through the Bachelor Nation ringer before: first on Juan Pablo’s season of The Bachelor, then on two seasons of Bachelor in Paradise, followed by a stint on Bachelor: Winter Games.

So, what does this all mean for Crawley’s options? If The Bachelor producers are smart—which you have to admit they are, despite some odd rules and…choices they’ve made lately—they’re going to adjust the group of singles to meet Crawley’s needs and past experiences.

Of Brown’s 30 contestants, 24 were older than her, five were exactly her age, and only one of them was younger at 23 years old. Overall, the average age was 27.

Weber’s crew is quite young. Of his 30 contestants, only one was older than him (at 31), and the youngest women were both 22. The average age came out to about 25. Interesting. With seven 23-year-olds on his roster, it’s no wonder there were so many complaints that the contestants were too young.

That’s likely not how it’s going to go down for Crawley. Here’s everything we know (which at, this point, is mostly speculative) about the 2020 Bachelorette contestants.

Crawley will get to meet some of them soon. Spoiler-in-Chief Reality Steve says that she will be introduced to five of her possible contestants during the second part of Weber’s finale. Perfect timing, if he’s right and filming begins on March 13.

The dudes are definitely going to be older…mostly. Reality Steve also says he has the first scoop on about half of the guys. According to his tweet, their ages are 28, 28, 25, 23, 28, 30, 40, 28, 31, 33, 26, 26, 28, and 28. Still, make sure to take that with a grain of salt. Reality Steve also says some could drop out/get cut before the official bell is rung.

This could be the season of the Daddy According to Reality Steve, there are already at least 4 fathers amongst the cast. Again, take with a grain of salt.

Why Clare Crawley Says Her Age Will Be an Advantage on The Bachelorette

After all that speculation about Hannah Brown take two, the 2020 Bachelorette has been announced: It’s Clare Crawley, who you may remember from Juan Pablo’s season of The Bachelor in 2014 and the Bachelor Winter Games. She’s s ready to try the franchise again, and says her experience with the show and 38 years on this Earth are going to be her secret weapons.

“A lot of people put it out there as this negative thing, but for me, it just is more years under my belt, more learning and knowing what I want, what I don’t want and what I won’t settle for,” she said on Good Morning America.

However, age is ultimately just a number when it comes to the guys she’s looking forward to meeting. “I have been known to date younger guys, so that’s not a problem for me,” she said. “The thing is I’m wondering if they’re ready for me, for my age. I feel like that would be more of an issue, than me with them, because I feel so much younger at heart than my actual age.”

“I’m proud of my age, but I just feel younger and I feel like that to me is what’s important,” she added.

Hopefully Crawley* won’ face the ageist backlash she seems to be expecting. Bachelor Nation fans have become more vocal during recent seasons—Pete Weber’s in particular—about the super-young age of some of the contestants.

After walking away from Pablo when she was about 32 years old, Clare Crawley appeared on seasons one and two of Bachelor in Paradise, with no luck in the love department. In 2018, she fell in love with Benoit Beauséjour-Savard on The Bachelor: Winter Games, and even got engaged. Unfortunately, the couple has since split (which you already knew because…she’s The Bachelorette). Hopefully, the fifth time is the charm.

Who Will Be the Bachelorette in 2020? The 4 Most Likely Fan Theories

Interestingly, one Reddit theory suggests that The Bachelor producers may have plotted against her for Bachelorette by giving her a “bad edit” in her elimination episode. “The producers noticed that everyone on social media was rooting for Kelley to become the bachelorette, and they obviously don’t want her to be since they can’t control her like the rest,” the user wrote. “So, they decide to give her the worst edit on the last episode so a) people stop rooting for as the bachelorette and b) so Peter doesn’t look like the idiot he is for sending her home.”

Rumors that she wasn’t invited to Women Tell All are reportedly true, according to Reality Steve, which means fans may be onto something

“If you finished 5th & you were popular on the season, & you don’t get invited to WTA, it means they didn’t like her. No other reason,” he said.

Hannah Ann Sluss or Madison Prewett

At this point, it seems highly likely that one of these ladies takes home the final rose (and a Neil Lane engagement ring). It just depends which fan-fueled rumor you find more believable. Some believe recent Instagram comments by Hannah Ann Sluss confirming that she is moving to LA means she gets the final rose, while others think that Peter chooses Madison Prewett. Pick your poison!

Either way, fans seem to be pulling for a Madison-led Bachelorette over Hannah Ann.

Hannah Brown—again

While Chris Harrison is “not against it,” it looks like all hope that Hannah Brown might get a second (third?) chance at finding love through Bachelor Nation. According to a new Instagram post from the official Dancing With the Stars account, the former Bachelorette will be touring with the live show at the same time that The Bachelorette typically films.

Hannah Brown, who won this past season of DWTS, will be now be joining the 2020 tour as a “special guest” from March 24 to 29. The Bachelorette usually starts filming in March. Still, most of these performances are in L.A…perhaps she could do both?
