Georgina Chapman Opens Up About Harvey Weinstein In Raw New Interview

Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman is speaking publicly about her soon-to-be-ex-husband Harvey Weinstein for the first time since the New York Times and the New Yorker published stories detailing accusations of harassment and assault against the movie mogul last fall. She released a short statement in October about her decision to leave her husband. “My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband,” Chapman said. “Caring for my young children is my first priority, and I ask the media for privacy at this time.”

Now she’s opening up to Vogue about the months since and why she’s maintained an incredibly low profile. “I was so humiliated and so broken . . . that . . . I, I, I . . . didn’t think it was respectful to go out,” she says. “I thought, Who am I to be parading around with all of this going on? It’s still so very, very raw. I was walking up the stairs the other day and I stopped; it was like all the air had been punched out of my lungs.”

Though Chapman (and business partner Keren Craig) have continued to run their fashion line, Marchesa, they did choose to cancel the runway show for the Fall 2018 collection which raised some eyebrows about the brand’s future.”We didn’t feel it was appropriate given the situation,” she says. “All the women who have been hurt deserve dignity and respect, so I want to give it the time it deserves. It’s a time for mourning, really.” (The line returned to the red carpet at Monday’s Met Ball when it was worn by Scarlett Johansson.)

Chapman maintains that she knew nothing of Weinstein’s behavior and was never suspicious. “That’s what makes this so incredibly painful: I had what I thought was a very happy marriage,” she says. “I loved my life.” But soon after the stories were published, she made the decision to leave. “It was difficult because the first article was about a time long before I’d ever met him, so there was a minute where I couldn’t make an informed decision. And then the stories expanded and I realized that this wasn’t an isolated incident. And I knew that I needed to step away and take the kids out of here.” When asked about Weinstein’s current state of mind, Chapman replies, “Clearly when I was married to him I didn’t know anything about his state of mind, so I’m probably not the best person to ask.”

The designer’s concern for the two young children she shares with Weinstein is clear in the interview and she becomes visibly upset speaking about them. “There was a part of me that was terribly naive—clearly, so naive. I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be? What are people going to say to them? It’s like, they love their dad. They love him. I just can’t bear it for them!”

In the end, Chapman doesn’t seem to be asking for anyone’s pity though. “I don’t want to be viewed as a victim,” she says, “because I don’t think I am. I am a woman in a shit situation, but it’s not unique.”

Model Ashley Graham Opens Up About Her Own #MeToo Moment as a Young Model

Another day, another #MeToo moment.

This morning on The View, the hosts and model Ashley Graham got into a discussion about fashion photographer Terry Richardson and the allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Graham revealed that as a young model she agreed to work with the acclaimed photographer, in spite of the rumors she’d heard about him. Like many aspiring models before her, she wanted to work with the “best of the best” and have those “images in your portfolio.” She says that her Richardson shoot was “normal enough,” but that she did have fears about becoming a victim as well and that he might ask her to remove her shirt.

While Graham may have been lucky that day, she was sadly not so on another set, shooting a big campaign when she was 17. She describes a truly awful experience for any woman, but especially a young one. Graham says a photographer’s assistant lured her away asking to talk with her and then pushed her into a closet: “He exposed himself and said, ‘Look at what you did to me all day long. Now, touch it.'” Insert shudder here. Thankfully, she was able to run out but says she feared that if people in the industry found out what happened that she would be the one labeled “difficult.”

Graham says that if she knew then what she knows now, that all these women would be standing up and saying “Me too,” she would have spoken out—loudly. “The movement is working,” she says. “And I really feel like there are women who are standing up and saying, ‘No. Me too. And I’m going to watch out for my sisters on set.'” View cohost Whoopi Goldberg adds that “it’s going to be much harder for people to get away with…people are watching.”

And that’s something we all hope for during this time of #TimesUp and #MeToo—that women (and men) feel increasingly empowered to speak out about what is happening to them or to someone around them in hopes of stopping the painful and toxic behavior that has been a norm for way too long.

Meghan Markle Opens Up About Her Passion for Volunteering

Just when we thought Meghan Markle and Prince Harry couldn’t get any more #relationshipgoals—the engagement pictures! the on-air gushing!—we get another little peek into what makes the couple such a royally good pair. The Daily Mail recently drew an excerpt from The Game Changers: Success Secrets From Inspirational Women Changing the Game and Influencing the World, published at the end of November, that features Meghan opening up about where she got her passion for volunteering—something shared in a big way by her fiancé.

“I started working at a soup kitchen in Skid Row of Los Angeles when I was 13 years old, and the first day I felt really scared,” the Daily Mail quotes from the book. “I was young, and it was rough and raw down there, and though I was with a great volunteer group, I just felt overwhelmed. I remember one of my mentors (Mrs. Maria Pollia) told me that, “Life is about putting others’ needs above your own fears.'”

“Yes, make sure you are safe and never ever put yourself in a compromising situation,” she added. “But once that is checked off the list, I think it’s really important for us to remember that someone needs us, and that your act of giving/helping/doing can truly become an act of grace once you get out of your head.”

Prince Harry has also spoken out in the past about his passion for volunteer work—something that’s practically in the job description for a royal. He’s supported (at least) a whopping 22 charities so far—and hey, volunteering together can be a pretty great date night.

She also said something that’s even more relatable than her New Year’s Eve resolutions: “‘I am self-sufficient and a go-getter, so often times I have to remind myself to take a moment to just breathe. My brain is always going, but at the end of the day because it is all stuff that I am passionate about, it’s easier to not feel exhausted as I squeeze it all in,’ she said.”

Aly Raisman Opens Up About Alleged Sexual Abuse by Former Team Doctor

Six-time Olympic medalist and Team USA gymnastics captain Aly Raisman recently came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics team doctor. In a Today Show interview Monday and in a passage from her upcoming memoir, she opened up about the confusion she experienced after the alleged assaults, which she says began at 15—and her struggle to come forward after her realization she’d been abused.

“It wasn’t until I started seeing other doctors and athletic trainers that I began to realize that their methods were far different from Larry’s,” Raisman wrote in her memoir, Fierce, set to be released on Tuesday and excerpted on Monday by People.

She wrote that she would often go in for bodywork with these other trainers and doctors. With them, “towels were draped over my hips and buttocks for privacy and to ensure that there was no inappropriate skin-to-skin contact.” Raisman added that other coaches and trainers “never, ever crossed any lines” when they worked with her.

Raisman continued in her memoir: “There was never a moment when their methods made me uncomfortable. It was different with Larry. I would lie on the table, my hands involuntarily balling themselves into fists as his ungloved hands worked their way under my clothing. ‘Treatment sessions’ with him always made me feel tense and uncomfortable.”

The gymnast wrote that she would simply “grit” her teeth and bear it, thinking she was alone. She’d later learn she was far from the only one.

“Over the years, among the girls who were invited to camps, there was some talk of Larry and his ‘treatment methods.’ Most of us thought the way he touched us was weird. But he did it to so many of us that we assumed, blindly, that he must know something we didn’t,” she wrote.

“I want people to know that I really didn’t know what was happening to me,” Raisman said on the “Today* show” Monday. “He was a doctor and he told me that his treatment would help heal all of my injuries. He was such a master manipulator, and I think that’s what’s important for people to understand is that these monsters are so good at manipulating you so you’re so brainwashed to think—I thought he was so nice.”

She told People on Monday that she’d struggled to come out with her allegations. “I was just so scared and nervous about what people were going to think. I was a textbook victim, brainwashed to believe I was fine.”

She added on “60 Minutes” that she chose to speak out now because she wants others to learn that “just because someone is nice to you, and just because everyone is saying they are the best person, it does not make it OK for them to ever make you uncomfortable, ever.”

At least 140 women are suing Nassar for sexual abuse, and a 2016 investigation found that at least 368 gymnasts had been sexually abused while working for USA Gymnastics. In July, Nassar pleaded guilty to three child pornography charges in federal court. He is currently in jail and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 7.

Millie Bobby Brown Opens Up About Being Deaf in One Ear

At just 13, Millie Bobby Brown is already a bona fide star thanks to her breakout turn as Eleven in the wildly popular Netflix show Stranger Things.” But that shouldn’t be surprising, since Brown decided at age eight that she would be onscreen and did everything in her power to make it happen.

“It was like a bug,” Brown told Variety of her desire to act. “I know this sounds crazy, but once I find something I want to do, nobody’s stopping me. If I don’t know how to sew, and I really had that passion to sew, that’s it, I’m going to sew. That’s also with acting. So here I am.”

But things haven’t always been easy for the actress. She also revealed to Variety she has never taken an acting class in her life or trained to be a singer. But she does both—while also being completely deaf in one of her ears.

She shared with the magazine that she was born with partial loss of hearing in one of her ears, but eventually after years of tubes, her hearing completely faded away on that side. When she’s performing—either acting or singing—she can’t fully hear herself. In the first season of Stranger Things, Brown made use of her other senses when playing Eleven, who didn’t talk much: “You can talk with your face,” she says matter-of-factly. “It’s very easy for someone to say, ‘I’m mad. I’m sad. I’m angry.’ I have to just do it with my face.”

Acting and singing with partial hearing loss could shake a young actress’s confidence, but Brown has never let it affect her. “I just started to sing, and if I sound bad, I don’t care, because I’m just doing what I love,” she said. “You don’t have to be good at singing. You don’t have to be good at dancing or acting. If you like to do it, if you genuinely enjoy doing it, then do it. No one should stop you.”

'Riverdale' Star Camila Mendes Opens Up About Struggling With an Eating Disorder

PHOTO: Robby Klein/Getty Images

Riverdale star Camila Mendes plays the mysterious, confident Veronica Lodge onscreen, but she isn’t afraid to let her guard down in real life—even when it comes to talking about the tough, personal stuff. On Friday, Mendes revealed that she has struggled with symptoms of an eating disorder in the past, and that her sister suffered with an eating disorder for years as they grew up. In a powerful Instagram post, she explained that she’s partnering with Project HEAL to help raise money for others seeking to help with their own eating disorders.

Project HEAL was founded in 2008 by Liana Rosenman and Kristina Saffran, who met each other during treatment for anorexia. They came together to start the nonprofit to help others who were suffering but couldn’t afford treatment—sadly, many insurance plans don’t provide adequate coverage for eating disorders. (Rosenman and Saffran, by the way, were 2011 honorees in Glamour’s young women of the year list).

“I can say from experience that eating disorders are serious mental illnesses,” Mendes wrote in her post. “Growing up, I watched my big sister suffer from one for many years, and I’ve experienced periods in my life when I’ve suffered symptoms as well. I’m joining Project HEAL to help break the stigma associated with eating disorders.”

Mendes will attend the [Project HEAL San Francisco Gala] on Saturday night to auction off a day on the Riverdale set. The money will go to those in need of treatment.

There’s been a recent cultural shift when it comes to talking about eating disorders, especially in pop culture, with high-profile projects and celebrities helping to shape an honest and empowering cultural concersation. This year’s To the Bone starred Lily Collins as a young woman struggling with anorexia. The film also led Collins to open up about her real life struggles with the illness.

Demi Lovato also got candid about disordered eating in her documentary, Simply Complicated. And Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario wrote, directed, and starred in her film Feed, which tells her own story about her experience with anorexia.

These hard-hitting, personal depictions of what it’s actually like to deal with an eating disorder are helping to shine light on a formerly taboo subject—and it’s wonderful that these celebrity women are using their platforms to lead the way in continuing to break down the stigma surrounding them.
