Here's Why Bachelorette Fans Are Mad at Clare Crawley on Behalf of Contestant Matt James

Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette hasn’t even begun filming yet, but it’s already shaping up to be the most dramatic season ever. (But, like, really.)

Production is on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we’ve already got a bit of feud brewing between Crawley and contestant Matt James, who also just happens to be BFFs with Tyler Cameron. The whole thing’s a bit messy, confusing, and low-key ridiculous, so we’re here to break down what’s got Bachelor Nation so frustrated with next season’s lead.

This all started with a couple of tweets from Crawley on April 25. “If you are doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season… you are in it for the wrong reasons… #dontwasteyourtime,” she wrote. “Respect the opportunity you’ve been given. Respect the rules. Respect me. @BacheloretteABC ❤️”

Fans strongly believe these tweets were about James even though she doesn’t mention him by name. Why? James told E! News that he is very much looking forward to meeting Crawley when the show can start filming. “There’s a very beautiful young lady in Sacramento right now who’s quarantining and who is patiently waiting for production on a show to pick back up and I’ve been waiting as well,” he said. “I’m hoping after everything settles down and everyone is safe that I’ll finally get to meet her. I’m looking forward to it.”

And yes, James is on Cameo—but fans were quick to point out he’s been using these opportunities to promote his charity. “Clare… Clare… in this house we stan Matt James. He is doing interviews to promote his charity, ABC Food Tours which is producing tablets and meals for kids in underprivileged areas. And he said he is looking forward to meeting you so where’s the problem,” one person tweeted.

After Crawley’s tweets, James posted a video message in his Instagram Stories about why he’s on Cameo, according to Us Weekly. “For those of you who may have missed the message earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman, my former teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver, pledged all of our Cameo earnings to the Robin Hood Foundation to fight this fight,” James said.

Even host Chris Harrison weighed in on the drama.

Bachelor Nation appears to be firmly on Team Matt in this situation, and many pointed out that he might be more well known than she is at this point. “Lol I knew who Matt James was before I knew who Clare was,” one fan tweeted. “So it’s pretty funny she thinks he has a following bc of her.” Just as a reminder, Crawley did not actually name names.

Of course, there are some coming to the lead’s defense. “I think it is very clear that Matt is only coming on to try and become the Bachelor,” one fan replied to the backlash. “But to fault Clare for not wanting to risk people coming on for the wrong reasons after the last few seasons we have had seems WILD.”

Clare Crawley has yet to respond to the backlash—but we’re sure this will all be hashed out when the show finally airs…eventually.

Clare Crawley, 38, Is the Bachelorette—Why That’s Important

As a loud and proud cougar who made the British tabloids for having such a great sex life in my 40s, I’m thrilled to see Clare Crawley, 38, cast as the next Bachelorette. And based on the social media reaction, I’m not the only one.

Clare is the hero we need right now because “older” women are more likely to know what they want. Far from being desperate, as society claims, they’re usually single at that age because they refuse to settle for less than what they deserve.

Full disclosure: I never considered myself a huge fan of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette before. Among other things, I’d always just assumed the franchise wouldn’t speak to me as a woman who’s never cared that much about getting married. I’d rather be alone at any age than feel alone by settling with the wrong person out of fear. With the announcement that Clare will be the Bachelorette, though, I realized the biggest reason why I kept turning off the show: I can’t relate to a 23-year-old who says she’s ready to settle down with one man forever…before she’s old enough to even rent a car without a surcharge.

Clare isn’t interested in settling, as we’ve seen already with her willingness to walk away from Juan Pablo. And on Good Morning America, she said she wants a man who’s willing to let his guard down and be emotionally brave. As someone who’s learned the hard way not to date emotional gold diggers, I’m already a fan of this attitude and approach. Clare can hopefully teach all of us what to look for in a healthy partner and what to not settle for.

And, as Clare pointed out in that interview, age is a benefit because it has taught her what she does and doesn’t want. I didn’t have my first worthy orgasm until my mid 30s because I didn’t know my body or what I wanted sexually due to lack of experience and a tendency to hook up with selfish dudes who just didn’t care. So imagine how little I knew about serious relationships, especially the kind that might lead to marriage, in my 20s. I admire younger people’s infectious enthusiasm and positive outlook, but age and experience are what teach human beings about everything in life. Those much-needed lessons are hard. They take time. Why do you think Yoda and Gandolf are so smart? Age and experience!

Clare knows her worth. Not despite her age. Because of it.

More than anything, though, having Clare cast is about representation. Women (and men!) are waiting longer to get married and have been for a while, so it’s nice to see the Bachelor franchise better reflect our reality. Clare not only has the confidence and experience of an older woman who knows her worth, but she’s also been around the block at Bachelor Nation. She knows what she’s doing and won’t be pushed around.

We need women like this. Someone who wants to find love and is optimistic, but who’s not willing to sacrifice herself or her integrity in order to get it. Clare represents the very best part of being older and unwed—you stop worrying so much about being alone. And when you don’t let society manipulate you into making decisions based on fear or social pressure, you attract the kind of person who respects you as much as you respect yourself. I can’t wait to watch.

Why Clare Crawley Says Her Age Will Be an Advantage on The Bachelorette

After all that speculation about Hannah Brown take two, the 2020 Bachelorette has been announced: It’s Clare Crawley, who you may remember from Juan Pablo’s season of The Bachelor in 2014 and the Bachelor Winter Games. She’s s ready to try the franchise again, and says her experience with the show and 38 years on this Earth are going to be her secret weapons.

“A lot of people put it out there as this negative thing, but for me, it just is more years under my belt, more learning and knowing what I want, what I don’t want and what I won’t settle for,” she said on Good Morning America.

However, age is ultimately just a number when it comes to the guys she’s looking forward to meeting. “I have been known to date younger guys, so that’s not a problem for me,” she said. “The thing is I’m wondering if they’re ready for me, for my age. I feel like that would be more of an issue, than me with them, because I feel so much younger at heart than my actual age.”

“I’m proud of my age, but I just feel younger and I feel like that to me is what’s important,” she added.

Hopefully Crawley* won’ face the ageist backlash she seems to be expecting. Bachelor Nation fans have become more vocal during recent seasons—Pete Weber’s in particular—about the super-young age of some of the contestants.

After walking away from Pablo when she was about 32 years old, Clare Crawley appeared on seasons one and two of Bachelor in Paradise, with no luck in the love department. In 2018, she fell in love with Benoit Beauséjour-Savard on The Bachelor: Winter Games, and even got engaged. Unfortunately, the couple has since split (which you already knew because…she’s The Bachelorette). Hopefully, the fifth time is the charm.

Clare Crawley Is the Next Bachelorette—and People Have a Lot of Thoughts

And the next Bachelorette is … Clare Crawley.

After weeks of speculation by fans, ABC made it official this morning during an announcement on Good Morning America. Crawley said she found out she was the pick over the weekend. “The most important thing is I want a man that will take off his armor,” she said on GMA. “I want a man who is strong, who will take off the body armor, open himself up and be vulnerable. I think that is some serious strength right there.” She says she isn’t looking for one type “physically” but more someone who “goes out of his way for her” because “it’s about me now.”

At 38, Crawley is older than a lot of Bachelorettes and says she has often dated younger men—but wonders if they’re ready for her age. “I feel so much younger at heart than my actual age. I’m proud of my age, I just feel younger,” she said.

There are still two episodes left of Peter Weber’s season of The Bachelor, so we don’t yet know who he ends up with—or whether or not it’s even a contestant on the show. Rumors have swirled that the pilot is in a relationship with one of the show’s producers. Typically ABC announces the name of the long-running franchise’s next star after the finale of the previous season, but they’re shaking things up this season.

Clare Crawley first appeared on Juan Pablo’s season of The Bachelor in 2014. “I lost respect for you,” she told him as she walked away from him on the show. She also appeared on seasons one and two of Bachelor in Paradise, where she failed to find someone. In 2018, she appeared on The Bachelor: Winter Games, and she got engaged to Benoit Beauséjour-Savard—though they eventually split.

Bachelor Nation took to Twitter to react to the news.

The premiere date for Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette has not yet been announced.
