This Is Reportedly Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Decided to Step Down as Senior Royals

Things have been moving very quickly across the pond since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shocked the world with their decision to step down as senior royals.

There has been much speculation about who knew what and when, what their futures will look like as they work to become “financially independent,” and, of course, why this is happening at all. In a new People story, a friend of the couple says, “If relationships had been better, things would have been different.”

“This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” the friend continued. “There is so much bad blood in that family—it’s toxic.” (The person did not call out any specific members of the royal family by name.) Another source told People that the negative press left Markle, in particular, “deeply, deeply hurt.”

“Meghan and Harry didn’t feel they got enough comfort or solace from them,” the source also said.

Whatever is actually going on inside the family is hard for anyone to guess. But we do know Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry joined the queen at Sandringham yesterday for a summit to discuss solutions and possible plans for the Sussex’s future. Ahead of the meeting, the brothers released a joint statement condemning a story that stated William had “bullied” Prince Harry and Markle out of the family. “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a U.K. newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex & The Duke of Cambridge. For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful,” the statement read.

Queen Elizabeth also emphasized family in her statement yesterday after the meeting. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family,” she said.

It’s expected that decisions surrounding what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s future will look like will be made quickly, per the queen’s request. As for the complicated family stuff, that may take longer.

Don’t Be Mad, but I’m a Feminist Who Decided to Write a Book About Men

I’ve always felt feminism to be like a block party: euphoric, emancipating, jubilant, and open to all. I often fear that many women in my generation think about it instead like a speakeasy: closed, password-protected, and open to the already enlightened.

The narrowing of feminism has presented itself in subtle and not so subtle ways. A few years ago, when I was on a panel and suggested that making the world better for women involved a plan for generating better men, the rhetoric I received was shocking, but familiar. “I don’t care about men,” one of the panelists said. I heard the retort and a round of applause from the audience and sat there dumbfounded. A few months ago, when I suggested that an abortion rights movement that is in peril should remind people that men who get women pregnant also benefit from a women’s right to choose, I was told that “there’s something slightly demeaning about framing women’s fundamental human rights as worthwhile because men have ‘personally benefited’ from them.” When I advised a Western government on a gender equality ministry program and suggested moving a sliver of the resources currently budgeted for girls over to boys to reach them how to be feminists, I was told none of the existing gender equality budget could go to them. For the last five years, when I’ve told people I am working on a book about how we need to develop a new kind of man in order to secure our freedom as women, I was routinely ridiculed. “Yes, because we don’t hear enough about men,” came the sarcastic sneer.

I am all for a feminism that decenters men. I am all for a feminism that puts women’s voices front and center. I am all for a feminism that seeks structural change and expects men to surrender power, but more and more I’m alarmed at a feminism that has no plan for men at all.

It wasn’t always like this for me. I too used to dismiss men’s role in the feminist movement. Men betrayed, harassed, assaulted, and traumatized me before I was even old enough to kiss one. I had to change schools due to violent bullying from the boys in my class. My experience with the opposite sex is far from unique. In fact, it’s shockingly normal and far worse for girls who aren’t white, middle-class, and able-bodied. In the United States, more than one in three women report domestic abuse from a partner in their lifetime. And in an average month, at least 52 women are shot and killed at the hands of an intimate partner. These are men women know. Never mind the men we don’t know.

To put it simply, women have been hurt and harmed by men for centuries, so as they’re enjoying increasing liberation, worrying about their oppressors isn’t on the agenda. It’s not like we don’t still have work to do on our own behalf. Despite major wins, poverty is still so feminized that the gender wealth gap is expected to take more than two centuries to close. Programs that benefit women have had to endure the steepest cuts under the Trump administration. Even in the make-believe world Hollywood creates to distract us from the grim world we live in, women are less likely to be protagonists and speak half as much as men do. Given that women already get a smaller slice of the pie, there is a legitimate concern that dedicating resources to men is shortchanging women.

Here's Why Camila Cabello Has Decided to Take a Step Back From Instagram

Camila Cabello says she hasn’t been on social media much these days, but she’s made a few returns to Instagram lately to discuss some of the unhealthy ways she’s noticed people scrutinize each other online. Earlier this month, she wrote a thoughtful post about refusing to let people body-shame her. On Saturday, she hopped back on IG to explain why she’s been taking a break from the platform and offered fans some advice for how to refocus on living in the present.

Cabello has been the subject of renewed media and tabloid attention after rumors began flying about her alleged relationship with Shawn Mendes. (The paparazzi has taken tons of photos of them making out, and she recently left him a birthday tribute that read, “I love you!”) But the attention she gets isn’t always positive and in her new post, Cabello made it clear that she’s been focusing on herself and trying not to focus on the negativity that happens on the Internet.

On a picture of herself tagged in New York, she wrote, “Really wanted to send love to everyone on here—I don’t go on social media that much cause it’s not good for me, and I don’t know how to not be affected by what people say on here so I just don’t read it. But I am totally aware that I can use this platform to help people even in small ways!”

She then included a strategy that she uses to decompress and avoid getting too deep in her head. She explained that for the past few months, she’s been dabbling with meditation tips and doing things like pausing for five minutes to breathe. Already, she said that “can feel the quality of my life improving – I used to live so much in my head , constantly trapped in my overthinking and being in my head as opposed to the present moment- and lately just going back to my breath and focusing on it puts me back in my body and back in the present and helps me so much.”

“Do it three times a day and whenever you feel yourself getting overwhelmed,” she advised her followers. “I know lots of us on here are growing up and learning how to be human lol, and that can be intense and hard sometimes – I think some tools are really life changing and help you know how to do that better, so I just thought i’d share something that’s really helped me; and hopefully it helps you guys!!!!”

This Is Reportedly Why Liam Hemsworth Decided to File for Divorce From Miley Cyrus

The Internet has not stopped buzzing since Liam Hemsworth officially filed for divorce from Miley Cyrus, bringing their 10-year relationship to an end. In an Instagram post, Hemsworth made it clear that he wishes nothing but the best for Cyrus and wants to deal with this situation in private. But a source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight just illuminated exactly why this divorce happened.

According to the source, Hemsworth just felt like it was time for him and Cyrus to go their separate ways. “Liam’s decision to file for divorce is sad, but in the end, it was never going to work,” the source said. “They are too different. Liam never wanted to share Miley with anyone. He loves her and he is far too traditional. He finally realized he just wants to start fresh.”

The source added that Hemsworth had “come to terms that it was time to move on” and that his family had been “incredibly supportive” of his decision. “They are relieved it’s over,” the source said.

“At first, Liam wanted to just give it time but he finally felt like things were getting nasty and he didn’t want to drag it out publicly,” adds the insider. “He decided it was all too much.”

It definitely has gotten intense: In addition to people speculating over the song Cyrus released about their breakup, “Slide Away,” there have been rumors about infidelity, partying, and fighting being reasons the two of them drifted apart. The gossip has only grown since Cyrus was seen kissing her longtime friend Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner’s ex, in Italy. Cyrus took to Twitter on Thursday, August 22, to shut down rumors there was cheating on her end.

“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade,” she wrote. “I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

Dreamers Can't Be Licensed Nurses in Some States. In Arkansas, One Woman Decided to Change That

I still remember the first time I put on my white coat. It was an October night in 2017, and along with 119 other nursing students in identical blue scrubs, I’d gathered at the Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, for a white coat ceremony. With 300 friends and family members watching, we crossed the stage to receive our coats, then recited the Nightingale Pledge, vowing to devote ourselves to our patients’ welfare.

The ceremony, which marked the start of our clinical training, was simple but deeply meaningful. Afterwards, I went to celebrate with my family and friends. Since I was little, I’d dreamed of helping others. My white coat meant I’d made it. Soon I’d be a real nurse, treating real patients.

Then I got home, checked Facebook and my happiness evaporated. At the top of my feed was an article warning that the Arkansas State Board of Nursing had begun denying nursing licenses to DACA recipients.

That meant me. I’m a Dreamer, born in Mexico and brought to America at age six. I feel American, but don’t have an unrestricted legal status, so the new policy meant I wouldn’t be able to work as a nurse. Even though I was halfway through my education, there was no road forward.

As I read the article, the world seemed to move in slow-motion. In that moment, everything changed. I felt my dream shatter.

I’m the oldest in my family, and my two brothers always looked up to me. After my parents separated, my mom worked three jobs to support us. While she worked in restaurants or cleaned houses, I picked up after them, fed them snacks, and became the household second-in-command.

It was tough, but my mom never let go of her dream: to give us a good life and a good education. She succeeded: I’m the first in my family to graduate from high school and the first to earn an associate’s degree. When I finish nursing school next December, I’ll be the first to earn a bachelor’s degree, too.

That’s been possible because of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows Dreamers to work and study without fear of deportation. Getting DACA in 2012 changed my life, letting me take jobs in restaurants and other local businesses, save money, and plan for college.

Even with DACA I didn’t qualify for financial aid, scholarships, or student loans, so I worked my way through community college. My real dream was to study medicine. As a child, my eyes would fill with tears during TV ads for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, longing to help the sick children I saw. I knew I couldn’t afford medical school, but I found I could afford a nursing degree and that was close enough.

The more I learned about nursing, the more I felt sure I’d discovered what I was meant to be. Later, during my clinical training, I had a light-bulb moment while working in the emergency room, suddenly aware that I felt a sense of belonging amid the adrenaline. I knew then I wanted to be an ER nurse.

Our country needs more young people to have those light-bulb moments and become nurses. According to the Arkansas Department of Health, all but one of our state’s counties are suffering healthcare worker shortages. More than half a million Arkansans live in areas with too few primary medical, dental, and mental health workers.

Often, it’s immigrants like me who fill those gaps. Research from New American Economy shows that 27.7 percent of physicians and 15.8 percent of nurses are born abroad. Almost 14,000 Dreamers work in healthcare jobs, according to the Migration Policy Institute. But that number could be far higher. Just 11 states allow DACA recipients to gain professional licenses, so like me, many thousands of aspiring healthcare workers find it impossible to achieve their dreams.

Here's Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Decided to Name Their Son Archie

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry threw everyone for a loop when they revealed the name of their baby boy: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. This isn’t a traditional royal moniker, as many predicted the Sussexes would go with. It turns out Markle and Prince Harry wanted something a little different for their child.

A source close to the duke and duchess tells ELLE.com the couple was keen on a “modern name” that still respected royal tradition. As for why Archie specifically, well, the answer is simple.

“There was no special meaning behind the name; the couple just loved it,” the source tells ELLE.com. That’s about as relatable of a reason as ever.

And it’s in line with what royals expert Katie Nicholl told Glamour a few weeks ago about Baby Sussex’s name. “I heard Meghan might want to go down the more modern route; they might want a more American name. But I think they will be respectful of royal traditions,” she said. “There are no strict rules at all. There’s no rule stipulating they must name a royal child after other royals.”

A few eyebrows were raised when it was revealed Markle and Prince Harry decided to forego a courtesy title (like “Prince”) for Archie, but Nicholl also called this in our interview.

“Harry is a man who, as a young boy, resented being a prince, resented the weighted burden that came with his title,” Nicholl told Glamour. “I think it’s very unlikely he’s going to want a title for his child. I think Lord or Lady is probably more than good enough for the Sussexes.”

Archie does have the title “Master” right now, but this could change when Prince Charles becomes king. All of the grandchildren under the current monarch have an HRH title, so it’s possible Archie will fall in line when the time comes. Or Markle and Prince Harry could stay firm in their decision.

Joe Little, a royal history expert and editor at Majesty magazine, says (per ELLE), “When Charles becomes King, his grandchildren will, where necessary, automatically be upgraded to Royal Highness and Prince/Princess. But perhaps Harry and Meghan will do what Prince Edward and Sophie have done and choose not to ‘burden’ their children with such styles and titles.”

Keep in mind that Queen Elizabeth II could issue a new “Letters Patent” to ensure all of Prince Harry’s children receive royal titles—so if she hasn’t done this yet, it’s probably because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle don’t want her to.

Prince or not, one thing is certain: Archie is a total cutie.
