Michelle Obama Just Launched a Weekly Reading Series for Children

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is joining the ranks of celebrities doing all they can to help keep the nation entertained and engaged as we shelter in place during the coronavirus pandemic. And much as she did during her time in the White House, she’s focusing on children.

Last week, she announced a new online series called Mondays with Michelle Obama in partnership with PBS Kids and Penguin Random House. “I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite children’s books and give kids an opportunity to practice their reading (while giving families a much-needed break!),” she tweeted. “Join me, @PBSKIDS, and @penguinrandom for read-alongs on Mondays at 12pm ET on @PBSKIDS Facebook and YouTube!” You can watch the livestream at noon ET on PBS KIDS’ Facebook and YouTube, along with Penguin Random House’s Facebook.

“As a little kid, I loved to read aloud. And when I became a parent, I found such joy in sharing the magic of storytelling with my own children—and then later, as First Lady, with kids everywhere,” she said in a statement to NBC News. “At this time when so many families are under so much stress, I’m excited to give kids a chance to practice their reading and hear some wonderful stories (and to give parents and caretakers a much-needed break).”

She kicked off the series on April 20 with The Gruffalo, a childhood favorite of so many, and even suggested an additional activity tied to the story for families to try. The first video already has almost 200,000 views.

As always, former President Barack Obama was all in on his wife’s endeavors. “Parents, you deserve a break—Michelle’s got storytime handled every Monday,” he tweeted. “She’s one of the best, I promise. (And I confess it makes me a little nostalgic.)”

Based on the reaction online, it seems like people agree.

We can’t wait to see which book she picks for next week’s session.

Ashley Graham Launched a Size-Inclusive Wedding Dress Collection With Pronovias

Ashley Graham has been a constant champion for body inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry, so it makes perfect sense that the supermodel has moved into designing clothes that reflect the many shapes and silhouettes she’s been advocating to see more of throughout her career. Last year she launched a bathing suit collection as part of an ongoing collaboration with Swimsuits for All, and this week she unveiled another impressive project: a line of wedding dresses to fit all sizes, in partnership with bridal line Pronovias.

The mission for Ashley Graham x Pronovias came from a personal place. In a press release, Graham explained how hard it was to find the right gown when she married her husband, Justin Ervin. “From shopping for the perfect wedding dress to the big reveal on your special day, women should feel confident and empowered throughout the entire process,” she said. “When I shopped for my wedding dress 10 years ago, I had difficulty finding a style in my size that fit well and made me feel special.”

The dresses range from size 0 to 34 and run from $1,000 to $3,500, and they’ll be available in early 2020 at both Pronovias boutiques and partners across the globe. The collection, which Graham called “classic, timeless, and fashionable” in an interview with The Knot, features modern, asymmetrical strapless cuts; elegant long-sleeve lace gowns; and even a white tuxedo suit. Check them out below.

Ralph Lauren Launched a Collection Inspired By Rachel Green on 'Friends'

Could we be any more excited about the latest way the fashion world is paying tribute to Friends?

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the show first airing on NBC, Ralph Lauren partnered with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to create the Wear-to-Work collection, inspired by one-time Ralph Lauren employee Rachel Green (played, of course, by Jennifer Aniston).

Ralph Lauren

Rachel was always the fashionista of the show. She may have started as a (not-so-great) waitress at the Central Perk, but it wasn’t long before she found her way to a job in the buying department at Bloomingdale’s and then eventually a role at Ralph Lauren. With ’90s and early aughts fashion having a moment right now, it’s the perfect time for an updated version of her chic workwear aesthetic. (As a young woman in starting her career in New York in the late ’90s, I can attest to the fact that Rachel Green was a definite role model for what to wear to the office.)

“The collection, comprised of pieces from Polo and LAUREN Ralph Lauren, encapsulates the polished style synonymous with the iconic brand. The collection calls on tradition through pinstripe suiting, crested blazers, and equestrian- inspired accessories, while enhancing these classic pieces with navy and orange color-blocking and pops of leopard to offer a fresh fall spirit,” the brand said in a statement. The campaign was shot in recreations of Monica and Rachel’s apartment and the Central Perk, which truly hit all of my nostalgia buttons.

300 Powerful Hollywood Women Just Launched Time's Up, a Massive Anti-Harassment Action Plan

Women in Hollywood have had enough of sexual harassment—whether it’s in Hollywood or for their sisters in agricultural, service, and domestic industries. On Monday, more than 300 women working in the entertainment industry, including actresses, agents, writers, directors, and producers, announced an ambitious action plan called Time’s Up Now, with the goal of ending the imbalance of gender power across all industries. According to The New York Times, a few of the women who helped start the plan are actresses America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, and Reese Witherspoon, along with producer Shonda Rhimes and lawyers Tina Tchen and Nina L. Shaw.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the group wrote in an open letter posted to their dedicated site, TimesUpNow.com.

The letter further explained that the group was moved by another open letter it received in November on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers who said they stood with the actresses and felt their same pain.

“To the members of Alianza and farmworker women across the country, we see you, we thank you, and we acknowledge the heavy weight of our common experience of being preyed upon, harassed, and exploited by those who abuse their power and threaten our physical and economic security,” the Time’s Up Now letter read.

To fight gender inequality and all the trappings that come with it, the group has come up with several ways to fight the battle—including a legal defense fund that is already backed by $13 million in donations. This, the Times explained, will be used to assist less-privileged women to protect themselves after incidences of sexual misconduct. Moreover, the group announced it will work on passing legislation that will penalize companies that remain tolerant of “persistent harassment” and use nondisclosure agreements to intimidate victims. Right now, the group isn’t centralized around a particular leader, and it’s also run completely by volunteers.

The open letter also explained that the group is asking women in Hollywood to wear black at the Golden Globes and to speak out about sexual harassment at the red carpet. As Longoria told The Times, the majority of women contacted about the all-black protest have signed on.

“For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour,” Longoria said. “This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

As Rhimes further noted to the paper, “It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house.” She added, “If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?”

The group isn’t just looking to protect the rights of women, but also aims to protect all marginalized groups including minorities, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. “No one wants to look back and say they stood at the sidelines,” Lena Waithe, one of Master of None‘s stars, added.

Ulta Just Launched a Huge Holiday 'Beauty Blitz' Sale With Different Deals Each Day

When it comes to beauty sales, Ulta always brings the heat. Its trusty 21 Days of Beauty Sale is basically a holiday in and of itself—and let’s never forget the store’s killer Black Friday sale this year. But now the beauty retailer is kicking things up a notch and celebrating the start of the gifting season with its Holiday Beauty Blitz Sale, and there are crazy good discounts happening each day until December 25.

The way this sale works is that Ulta’s giving us new deals in store and online each and every day—and there are some seriously good offers going on. The catch? They’re only telling us what’s going on sale five days at a time. The sale started yesterday (the first product up for grabs was the Smashbox Drawn In. Decked Out. Shadow + Contour + Blush Palette)—but it’s not too late to join the party!

So break out your holiday gift-giving list; grab that magical piece of plastic from your wallet; and get shopping. Yesterday’s deal sold out, and there’s no guarantee upcoming days won’t do the same.

December 2: bareMinerals foundations are all just $19—instead of their normal $28-34. And yep, this includes the original, best-selling powder, the liquid line, and the brand’s well-reviewed Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF formula. These foundations have been on our Beauty Awards lists a few times for their silky finish and added SPF bonus.

December 3: Both Tarte’s Double Duty Beauty Discovery Set and its Fresh Faced Faves Best-Sellers Kit are 40 percent off, bringing them down to $21.60 and $17.40 respectively. If you’re new to Tarte or looking for a great gift, these collections are perfect—and now very affordable.

December 4: Mally Beauty Mally’s Glow 5 Piece Collection is now $16, which is 50 percent off its usual price. This kit will give you that holiday glow—and a really cute makeup bag to go with it.

December 5: Becca Cosmetics’ Lush Lip Colour Balm is 50 percent off, which brings these balms down to a one-for-you-one-for-me $11. The products pack just the right amount of color with extra moisture for the winter days ahead.

Sephora Just Launched a Surprise Thanksgiving Sale, and the Deals Are Incredible

In case you’ve been refreshing the Sephora site every three minutes to see when they’d finally let us in on the upcoming giant Black Friday sale, you can stop—because Sephora just dropped a surprise Thanksgiving sale on us. To make it even better, today’s deals are totally different from what’s dropping tomorrow.

Sephora surprised shoppers with an early sale last year, too—here’s hoping this is a yearly tradition—and this year’s deals aren’t messing around. We’re talking huge discounts on customer-favorite products like Becca highlighter, Stila lipsticks, Urban Decay eye sets, and skincare sets. And you won’t need to move from your Thanksgiving food coma—or battle the crowds—to shop it: The early surprise sale is only online at Sephora.com and on Sephora’s app.

Be warned, however: a lot of products are limited edition, and the site makes it clear that everything will be available “while supplies last”—so no judgement here if you sneak off during the family flag football game to “check the turkey” and do a little shopping instead. Scroll through to catch some of our favorite picks from the sale.

The Urban Decay Total Perversion Set is almost 60 percent off, and comes with a full-size Perversion Mascara and Perversion 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in it. Normally the pair would cost you $43, but they’re $15 today.

For anyone looking for a lipstick that refuses to budge no matter how much stuffing you eat, there’s the Stila Stay All Day, Shimmer All Night Mini Liquid Lipstick Set. It comes in two very festive metallic shades: Patina Shimmer and Beso Shimmer. The price? A wallet-friendly $15.

If you know someone who wants their highlight to be so lit you can see from another planet, there’s the Becca Champagne Dream Lip & Highlighter Duo. The set is worth $56, but thanks to the sale, it’s $34. The champagne lip and cheek combo will go perfectly with the champagne in your glass during this season’s holiday parties.

If you’re shopping for “a friend” who loves skincare (we won’t tell if that’s just you), the Glamglow Let it Glow! Little Sexy Trio, with three targeted skin treatments, is on sale for $39—a big drop from its retail value of $66.

For the luxury skincare lover, the Caudalie Mini Must Haves set is just $15 (it’s worth more than three times that).

Admittedly, this sale definitely adds to our growing list of Black Friday beauty deals we’re shopping, but we’re more than willing to move this one way up to the top.
