Kamala Harris Wants To Eliminate The Country's Massive Rape-Kit Backlog If Elected


Following the Democratic debates two weeks ago, Kamala Harris has shot up in the polls and emerged as a frontrunner among the hopefuls planning to challenge Donald Trump in 2020. Now, her campaign is starting to roll out some of the policies that Harris would champion as president, and she announced on Friday that she would make it a priority to cut the country’s backlog of tens of thousands of untested rape kits.

Harris said that she would invest $1 billion to help states process rape kits that could help authorities identify perpetrators of sexual assaults and prevent backlogs from happening in the future. In a series of tweets, Harris unveiled her plans and shared that the overall price tag on working through an approximate 225,000 kits would cost “about $2 million less each year than what taxpayers have spent on Trump’s golf trips.”

“The federal government can and should prioritize justice for survivors of sex abuse, assault and rape,” Harris wrote on Twitter. “As California’s Attorney General, I committed resources and attention to clearing a backlog of 1,300 untested rape kits at state-run labs, and we got it done within my first year in office. We need the same focus at the national level to pursue justice and help hold predators accountable.”

Rape kits are made up of DNA evidence collected in the immediate aftermath of sexual assault crimes, usually following investigations and lengthy medical examinations of victims. The DNA results are then rendered through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) so that police departments across the country can access information and help to identify criminals. However, throughout the last decade, reports have shown that many rape kits are just sitting in storage facilities, either because they haven’t been requested by detectives or prosecutors for analysis or because they’ve been backlogged because of resource or lack of policies. Organizations like End The Backlog and activists such as Mariska Hargitay have urged action on the issue, but too often, the response has been that ending the backlog would be costly—especially because no one knows exactly how many kits are out there.

Harris’ plan is the first of its kind among the 2020 candidates. Although former Vice President Joe Biden has also raised the issue, tweeting in January that “[a]n untested rape kit means a survivor without justice.” He noted his own action on the issue and issued a call to action, “Test every kit. Every single one.”

Do Not Eat Romaine Lettuce: Health Officials Have Issued a Massive Recall


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new romaine lettuce recall Tuesday—just in time to throw off your Thanksgiving dinner meal prep. Here’s what you need to know to avoid turning your holiday into an outbreak.

The recall comes after reports of a multi-state outbreak of E. coli, which has so far sickened 32 people in 11 states, plus another 18 people in Canada. “CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak,” the organization stated.

The warnings indicate the romaine lettuce recall is widespread—unlike others that only apply to certain brands, states or stores, the CDC is currently considering all romaine lettuce unsafe to eat. This means if you have whole, bagged, or boxed romaine in your fridge, throw it out. If you have a salad mix that contains romaine lettuce, throw it out. Even if you have romaine that you’ve eaten and haven’t gotten sick from, throw it out. The CDC is even suggesting washing your fridge shelf or drawer where the romaine was kept. Avoid ordering it at restaurants or buying it at retailers.

Why the all the precautions? E. coli is nothing to mess around with—standard outbreak symptoms include cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting—but this particular strain, called Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, can be especially severe. So far, 13 people have been hospitalized from the outbreak in the U.S., including one who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure, though no deaths have been reported according to the CDC.

If you did eat contaminated lettuce, you’ll know pretty quickly. Symptoms can show up anywhere from one to 10 days after exposure, the CDC says. Most cases are mild, so don’t panic. But if you’re still feeling sick after three days, have a high fever or can’t keep any liquids down, don’t wait until after the holiday weekend to see a doctor.

And if romaine was anywhere on your Thanksgiving menu, make an emergency switch to spinach.

The Weeknd Invites Bella Hadid To Share His Massive Apartment


The Weeknd, né Abel Tesfaye, has made Bella Hadid quite an offer—an offer she can’t refuse, one might even say. Per TMZ, the singer and on-again, off-again, on-again boyfriend of supermodel Hadid recently asked her to move in with him—into a lavish NYC apartment—and she swiftly said yes.

The apartment in question, listed for $60,000 per month before it went off the market in early October, is nestled inside a luxury complex that, according to The Observer, bills itself as “paparazzi-proof.” The building is also home to the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Harry Styles, and Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meg Ryan all also own apartments in the building. It’s like real-life High-Rise.

As far as its paparazzi-repellent measures go, here’s how it works: The elevator bank, per WWD, is programmed such that neighbors never ride up to their apartments together (sounds inefficient, honestly); it contains a secret garden and 24-hour concierge and doorman services; and it offers valet services in a private garage.

But back to the apartment. It encompasses a reported 5,004 square feet, four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a private, 1,000-square-foot roof terrace with extraordinary panoramic views; since moving in, per The Weeknd’s Instagram Stories, he’s littered the living room coffee table with the myriad magazines Hadid has covered recently. As a bonus, it has a 70-bottle-capacity wine fridge.

Hadid and The Weeknd split in 2016, but they reunited earlier this year and have been active presences on each other’s Instagrams ever since. “Home,” Hadid captioned a recent photo of the two. Given that they celebrated her birthday just more than two weeks ago, an apartment seems like a pretty lavish gift. With the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show coming up, its proximity to the Dogpound is an added bonus (though Hadid has been known to favor trainer Joe Holder).

300 Powerful Hollywood Women Just Launched Time's Up, a Massive Anti-Harassment Action Plan


Women in Hollywood have had enough of sexual harassment—whether it’s in Hollywood or for their sisters in agricultural, service, and domestic industries. On Monday, more than 300 women working in the entertainment industry, including actresses, agents, writers, directors, and producers, announced an ambitious action plan called Time’s Up Now, with the goal of ending the imbalance of gender power across all industries. According to The New York Times, a few of the women who helped start the plan are actresses America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, and Reese Witherspoon, along with producer Shonda Rhimes and lawyers Tina Tchen and Nina L. Shaw.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the group wrote in an open letter posted to their dedicated site, TimesUpNow.com.

The letter further explained that the group was moved by another open letter it received in November on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers who said they stood with the actresses and felt their same pain.

“To the members of Alianza and farmworker women across the country, we see you, we thank you, and we acknowledge the heavy weight of our common experience of being preyed upon, harassed, and exploited by those who abuse their power and threaten our physical and economic security,” the Time’s Up Now letter read.

To fight gender inequality and all the trappings that come with it, the group has come up with several ways to fight the battle—including a legal defense fund that is already backed by $13 million in donations. This, the Times explained, will be used to assist less-privileged women to protect themselves after incidences of sexual misconduct. Moreover, the group announced it will work on passing legislation that will penalize companies that remain tolerant of “persistent harassment” and use nondisclosure agreements to intimidate victims. Right now, the group isn’t centralized around a particular leader, and it’s also run completely by volunteers.

The open letter also explained that the group is asking women in Hollywood to wear black at the Golden Globes and to speak out about sexual harassment at the red carpet. As Longoria told The Times, the majority of women contacted about the all-black protest have signed on.

“For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour,” Longoria said. “This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

As Rhimes further noted to the paper, “It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house.” She added, “If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?”

The group isn’t just looking to protect the rights of women, but also aims to protect all marginalized groups including minorities, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. “No one wants to look back and say they stood at the sidelines,” Lena Waithe, one of Master of None‘s stars, added.
