Miley Cyrus Released a Christmas Song About Feeling Lonely This Holiday Season

Miley Cyrus has released a new track titled “My Sad Christmas Song” for anyone who has a broken heart this holiday season. The singer posted a link to her SoundCloud on December 21, as well as shared a poignant message to let her fans know they’re not alone.

With lyrics like “I turn on the radio/ I binge watch our favorite shows/ This year feels kind of lame/ But the last one was the same,” the song describes the heavy feeling of the holiday blues—especially if you’re missing a loved one.

“A sad Christmas song I wrote a few years back right before the holidays,” Cyrus wrote on Instagram. “Was feeling like s**t cause I couldn’t be with the one I loved. Even with a house full of family and friends I still felt alone.”

She continued, “In ways that still feels relevant and someone reading this right now could possibly relate! If you feel lonely this season just know YOU ARE COMPLETELY MADE OF MAGIC!”

“You are as special as a snowflake, beautifully unique and I hope inside your soul feels light, hope, peace, and joy knowing how singularly amazing YOU are! Love always wins!” Cyrus added.

After dropping the song, the pop star received a lot of love on Twitter from fans who said they needed to hear her message after losing their loved ones.

Though Cyrus didn’t reveal who inspired the track, chances are she’s referring to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

In 2015, the two were months away from reconciling since they were spotted at a musical festival in January 2016. This time of year is also reminiscent because Cyrus and Hemsworth had a secret December wedding at their home in Nashville last year.

The couple have since gone their separate ways after announcing their split over the summer.

Since then, Cyrus has been linked to Cody Simpson, but breakup rumors have been swirling since Simpson was recently spotted with another woman. Perhaps Cyrus was sending a pointed message with her new track as well?

A Sober Holiday Season Doesn't Have to Be Boring

Then came a real test: a season soaked with social stress and opportunities to take the edge off with a mug of mulled wine. “I felt like something was missing without drinking and I had a lot of despair, thinking it would always be that way,” McKowen says.

As hard as it was, the experience of having a sober holiday season was still hugely empowering for McKowen—as it was for me. When I woke up the next morning having survived my first sober Christmas Day for more than 20 years, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride, as well as an even stronger belief in my choice. “I realized how much I’d been missing and how alcohol made an already tricky season even more so,” McKowen says. “By the time my second sober holiday season came around, it was a totally different experience. I love the holidays now. They are a lot simpler and focused on the things we want the holidays to be about: gratitude, reflection, community.”

If you’re sober this season, or simply looking to be more mindful of your drinking, here’s some advice from those of us who have been there.

1. Remind yourself why you’re choosing not to drink.

Warrington recommends having a really clear idea of the reasons you’re choosing not to drink. You might be fed up with hangovers, want to save money, or have a fitness goal you’re striving for. “Focus on what you’re creating space for in your life by cutting out booze,” she says. “I always say, the only thing you’re missing out on by not drinking is getting drunk”

2. Keep an open mind.

If, like Warrington, your first sober holiday season is motivated by curiosity—What would happen if I didn’t end up doing a drunken rendition of “Santa Baby” this year?— her advice is to keep an open mind. “Assume you’re going to have fun,” she says. “For me, sober parties were more strange than anything, as I was so used to having a drink in my hand it felt odd not to, but I soon got used to it and enjoyed the freedom of being able to leave whenever I wanted.”

3. Know when to sit out.

If the whole idea of being sober at a party is just one step too far, that’s absolutely fine. “You don’t have to go to the party. Really. You don’t,” McKowen says. “So many of the parties, dinners, and obligations we commit to are optional. It doesn’t occur to us that we can simply back out and take the pressure off.”

4. Plan ahead.

When it comes to the social events you do want to go to it really helps to plan ahead. McKowen recommends having someone to check in with before, during and after the event, both to keep you accountable to sobriety and help emotionally.

Taylor Swift Celebrated Her 30th Birthday With an Over-the-Top Holiday Party

The singer took to Instagram to share that she hosted an afterparty—at NYC’s Oscar Wilde restaurant—to toast to her birthday. And, unsurprisingly, there was a theme and plenty of her A-list besties in attendance. Guests included her boyfriend Joe Alwyn, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Halsey, and Camila Cabello. Her childhood bestie, Abigail, also made an appearance in the photos. “Happy birthday but make it santa ?,” she wrote in the caption of one pic showing her guests wearing Santa hats and other Christmas-y accessories.

“Honestly spending my 30th with the fans who have made my life what it is at jingle ball, then throwing the most aggressive holiday party known to womankind… I just.. seriously feel so lucky for you all and will spend forever trying to find ways to say thank you. cries in Christmas tree,” the singer captioned another one of the photos.

And of course, there was dancing.

Her second cake of the evening was equally amazing and also cat-themed. Swift is set to star in the film version of Cats and is a longtime feline lover who owns three herself—Meredith, Olivia, and Benjamin—who all appear to be represented on the dessert. “Fur real guys this was my cake ?,” she wrote on Instagram.

Lifetime's Mistletoe & Menorahs Is the Jewish Holiday Movie You've Been Waiting For

Julianna: And what I love about Hanukkah is that Guy and I can come together for a quiet moment at the end of every single day of Hanukkah to light one candle on the menorah. It’s just nice to be able to put a pause and spend time together and celebrate this tradition that Guy has had since he was little.

Guy: There’s another bit that we put into the movie is me teaching Julianna how to do the prayers while lighting the candles on the menorah.

Julianna: In the film, Kelley [Jakle, who plays the main character, Christy] has a beautiful voice. When we were developing the script, it wasn’t initially intended to have the actor singing in that moment. It’s when we cast Kelley and we knew she’s so talented as a singer that we revised it to have her sing. It was the same with Jake. He’s a singer, too. So when “Oh Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah” comes on… we changed all of that to be included because of the actors who were cast. They’re talented in so many arenas.

Important question: fruitcake plays a big part in this movie. Was it as good as it was made out to be?

Julianna: We tried to make sure that the fruitcake wasn’t that bad because it’s definitely not a great dessert. I think part of Guys writing was to try to bring fruitcake back.

Guy: I love fruitcake. I really do. And that is something I discovered from Christmas is how much I love fruitcake.

Julianna: Oh, I’m not a fan. But the latkes and jelly donuts were fantastic. We tried to make sure that the actors like them so that they wouldn’t have a look of of anything on their face but joy.

And what’s next? Would you like to do another film for the holidays next year?

Guy: I would like to bring a Passover movie [into the fold]. There’s holiday movies all year around…spring movies and summer movies. But as far as Hanukkah, there’s still a lot of stories out there that can be explored. Whether it’s romance stories that involve someone being Jewish or two people being Jewish or just somebody going to a Hanukkah party, [I’m interested]. When pitching season comes around, I certainly hope to have a bunch of ideas.

Mistletoe & Menorahs airs Saturday, December 7 at 6 P.M. ET on Lifetime. Jessica Radloff is the Glamour West Coast editor. Follow her on Twitter @JRadloff.
